Obama Immediately Calls For Tax Code Reform: Wealthy & Corporations Must Pay ‘Fair Share’

President Barack Obama says the emergency bill Congress passed to prevent a government default is just the first step to ensuring the country lives within its means.
While the bill successfully made its way through both houses of Congress, liberals and conservatives, alike, have expressed dislike for many of its tenets. The Globe and Mail perfectly captures the negativity that accompanies the bi-partisan agreement:
The compromise deal deeply angered both conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats. Many Republicans contended the bill still would cut too little from federal spending; many Democrats said much too much. Still, Republican lawmakers supported the compromise, 174-66, while Democrats split, 95-95.
President Obama agrees that the bill is imperfect. He addressed the nation this afternoon shortly after the Senate passed the bill to raise the debt ceiling and avert a potentially catastrophic default.
Speaking in the Rose Garden, Obama said lawmakers still need to find a balanced approach to reducing the deficit that includes some adjustments to Medicare and reforming the tax code so the wealthy pay more. Watch his full speech, below:
In addressing his stance on the wealthy, he said:
“It also means reforming our tax code so the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations pay their fair share and it means getting rid of taxpayer subsidies to oil and gas companies and tax loopholes that help billionaires pay a lower tax rate than teachers and nurses.”
It is this comment — “fair share” — that some have begun to question. What does the president mean when he asks upper-income Americans to pay their fair share? Read The Blaze‘s Becket Adams’ take on what this could mean. Last week, economist and political expert Thomas Sowell also weighed and took particular issue with the phrase, writing:
President Obama says that he only wants the wealthiest Americans to pay their “fair share.” But he says zilch about just what that fair share is, or even how to determine it.
Is the “fair share” of the top 10 percent of income-earners 20 percent of all taxes? 40 percent? 60 percent?…
This is another blank check that Obama wants. “Fair share” in plain English means “more,” regardless of how large a share of all income taxes is already being paid by a fraction of the population, while nearly half pay no income taxes at all.
The Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin, unimpressed with Obama’s address this afternoon, writes the following:
An unsmiling President Obama, alone at a podium in the Rose Garden, with only the press corps present, delivered the equivalent of a campaign speech after Senate passage of the debt-ceiling bill. He sounded, as is his wont these days, defensive…
He touted the room still left in the budget for more domestic “investment.” He insisted that he’d get his “balanced approach” with plenty of tax hits to “billionaires and oil companies.”
Preceding the Senate vote, the House easily approved the bill on Monday. Beforehand, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi captured the mixed feelings coming from both sides of the aisle when she said:
“I’m not happy with it. But I’m proud of some of the accomplishments in it. That‘s why I’m voting for it.”
On the whole, budget experts said that the agreement was a step in the right direction. But, most also agreed that the actions being taken aren‘t enough to truly tackle America’s fiscal mess. Regardless, the White House says Obama will sign the bill as soon as it lands on his desk.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

What he refuses to admit?..If the economy would just get a little better then more people would buy more goods and more people would be paying taxes..and of course less people would be collecting unemployement ..Right now it appears we are at a point where there are too many people on the government payroll and too many people getting taxpayer money from unemployement..That leaves a small portion of people working and supporting all this mess..So what happens when the rich has no more to give?..I guess then Obama will have redistributed to his satisfaction..
The Republicans have a great opportunity to explain all of this clearly to the American people in a way where no presidential propaganda will hide the truth..I hope 2012 is the year for America..because 2011 has been pretty crappy..jmo

If we raise taxes on corporations (or businesses in general), just understand that means WE WILL PAY THOSE TAXES in the form of higher prices for goods & services.
What we really need to do is enact The Fair Tax. Then everyone will pay taxes based on their individual consumption. It will not matter where their money comes from, earnings, investments, black market, lottery, inheritance, or dealing drugs, they will pay as they spend.

He must think we are REEEEALLLY stupid, if he thinks that we believe “taxing oil companies and corporations” won’t cost the rest of us anything. When oil companies and corporations get higher taxes, they raise the price of their products and services to pay them. WHO do you think is going to have to pay that tax? Why, the poor and middle class, of course–in the form of higher prices for everything they have to buy, like gas for their cars, groceries, insurance, etc. Companies have to hire whole ROOMS full of people to calculate and make sure they are collecting and sending in the right amount of income withholding, Social Security and Medicare taxes that they are forced to collect AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE, then remit to the government. How much do you think THAT adds to the price of everything you buy? If the average person had any CLUE how much is added to the price of every single thing they buy, just to pay for excessive govt. regulation, paperwork and tax reporting, you would see a revolution in this country, for sure! But the Sheeple just keep on drinking the Kool-Aid and believing they are getting a pass because Obama is going to “sock it to the rich”. IDIOTS.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 5:19pmI am old enough that I have lived through quite a few different administrations, and in my experience, when the Democrats start mouthing off about “socking it to the rich”, the guy who makes $19,500 a year suddenly discovers that in the govt. tax collector’s opinion, he is “rich”. I remember when LBJ was going to “sock it to the rich”. We made about $15,000 that year, and would have broke even on the taxes we had already paid in–if not for the SUR-TAX LBJ sockied to us at the end of the year–we ended up having to pay in additional tax at the end of the year, and really had to scrape to come up with the money. Go figure–us being so rich and all, back then, you would have thought we’d have had no problem ponying up that extra tax. This is how Democrats work. If you are a middle-class wage earner and a Democratic president starts talking about “making the rich pay more taxes”, you better hang onto your wallet–because he is going to have his hand in it very soon!

I find that the message he was preaching then is exactly what the economist say would be the only way to preserve our nation. To restore the US to pre-lib/socialist/progressive eras where logic and personal responsibility are the judges and executioners rather than regulations and overseer mandates. The more you learn about what he stands for and the detail of the plans the more you come to realize that he has it right, not because he got some majic gene or has been blessed by GOD with a special gift, but, that he has at the heart of his character the intent and guidence of the founders of this great nation and the integrity to stick to principals like a soldier trying to save the lives of his squad in the middle of the battle. think about it, check it out!
You like me , I’m pretty sure, have no problem being responsible for ourselves, we live with a basic morality and code of ethics. Not everyone has those to guide them but they face the concequences for their actions either way and provide the examples of how not to be.

However, your next assertion that it should be somehow traded for something else is nonsense. Corporate Taxes are a ridiculous way of screwing everyone, so let’s stop the practice. If there is another practice that should be stopped, then let’s deal with it.
Now, specifically, what in the universe are you talking about? Corporations aren’t treated like people. Corporations don’t vote, and they don’t hold public office, and they don‘t get driver’s licenses and they don’t marry. How are they treated like people?

What’s LLOYD is talking about is that the entire concept of corporate taxes are a farce. Corporations aren’t people, and that‘s why you can’t actually tax them. That‘s why they’re allowed to wrap their taxes into their operating costs and pass them on to consumers.
See? Corporate taxes aren’t taxes on corporations, they’re taxes on the consumers. It was an idea of JFK to crank up Federal Taxes without freaking people out. They still collect more in revenue, but you don‘t notice it as it’s wrapped up in the cost of what you’re purchasing.
THEN, they tack on some sales tax and you can get angry over that. Awesome, no?
Think about it. You pay income taxes, then taxes on what you purchase in the form of the corporate tax passed on to you as the consumer, then sales tax on what you just purchased, then property tax and licenes. SWEET!

The Citizens United decision (2010) gives coporations the right to freedom of speech, interpreted as the right to make certain unlimited and anonymous political campaign contributions, on the grounds (first laid down by SCOTUS over a century ago) that they are “persons.”
To be fair, unions have the same right. I see no reason why such large impersonal entities should enjoy 1st amendment rights when they have such obvious power to command the media and pump out virtually unlimited propaganda, whether right or left.

I would not abridge a union member’s right to say whatever he likes, just like I would not abridge a CEO’s right to say whatever he likes. You probably want people’s freedom to say whatever they like, and to spend as much as they like on whatever they like restricted, too?
Campaign contribution limits, term limits. Let‘s put all kinds of limits on other people’s freedoms in the name of “fairness”, is that your schtick?

On one point I agree with you absolutely. George Soros, a corporate CEO, a union leader or rank-and-filer, you, me, Ashton Kutcher and Angelina Jolie and anyone else–as an individual–have the right to say, write, text, blog, tweet or whatever, anything whatdoever.
All of us should also have the right–again, as individuals–to contribute whatever we want of our time and money to political causes and campaigns, without limit.
You were waiting for the but? Here it is: no one should not be allowed to contribute money anonymously, and spurious “persons” such as corporations and unions should not be allowed to contribute money at all.
My default position is that neither a democracy nor a republic nor, ultimately individual freedoms, can be secure if citizens are not willing publicly to put their money where their mouths are, or if money alone increasingly determines the outcome of elections and public debates.

You’ve got to watch out for those VAT and “national sales taxes”. The problem with them is, of course they start out small, to get everybody to support them. But they can always be RAISED without your consent again and again. Plus, a tax on what you are able to buy is a very regressive tax that hits the poor and middle class–who spend far higher percentage of their income on necessities–much harder. Ask the folks in Europe how that works. You cannot trust politicians to be responsible about this. Giving them a blank check with a “national sales tax” would be giving them an even bigger license to steal than they already have.

My light bill last month was $300, they say it is going to double because of EPA carbon regulations due to hit soon. $1200 for energy, will be as much as the note on my home, and would certainly leave me eating rice and beans, while the welfare bums I see at the grocery stores using their snap cards would continue to eat steak and crab legs, since the government buys their groceries, pays their light bill, and provides them van service.

We have the technology to produce low pollution synthetic oil from waste products we throw away today at a cost around $20 a barrel, that has the side benefit of it’s waste product being an organic super fertilizer. The only reason for green crap is to raise energy costs, which only helps the rich and hurts the poor and destroys the middle class. Green will come, led light bulbs will replace incandescent once the technology matures to the point where the energy needed to produce the led light bulb drops below the amount of energy the incandescent would use over 3 lifetimes. What I saw was Obama getting rolled. I’m sure he would have preferred a “clean bill” raising the debt ceiling, period, with no cuts. Or, if there had to be cuts, tax increases on the wealthy. He got nothing of the kind, and is taking flak from progressives over it.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 2:37pmIf this A_ _ hole president didn‘t spend us into poverty he wouldn’t need to try and steal more tax money from anyone! What about cut spending doesn’t this idiot understand? The campaign slogan for anyone running against the socialist in the White House should be “It’s the SPENDING stupid!!!”

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 2:35pmHe also always says that the people who benefit most from the system should pay more. Well, isn’t a person who has been on welfare longterm benefiting most from the “system”? If 100% of their income is coming from the system, and people making 1,000,000 dollars have to pay over 300,000 in taxes, then the biggest benificiaries are the one’s on welfare.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 2:40pmFormer Senator Obama (at the podium) No …. ummm … not benefit’s the most from the government…. I meant…. benefits most outside of Washington D.C., outside of government subsidies, outside of entitlements, outside of lobbyist’s, you know outside of my inner circle. With the exception of the GOP of course!
What a troll!

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 9:37pmExcellent point. Also, could someone please explain to me how in heaven’s name do people that get back all the fed income tax that they put in throughout the year because they make too little income also get paid EIC for each of their kids. We aren’t talking about a couple hundred, more like a couple thousand–at least. Why is it that the government has any duty to give tax breaks for people having children??? Aren‘t they using the ’systems’ more than, let‘s say a single person with no kids and that’s paid off student loans making $50,000 a year? Why in the heck should the single person pay much more in taxes only to give it to people that drain the system? As a footnote, I was the single mom with 3 kids and my best friend was the single responsible person. He would help with my taxes every year, third year in when he finally told me what he paid in taxes, i quit taking the EIC and haven’t taken it since. Just one small, but blatantly obvious, case of redistribution of wealth. BTW this was many years before I ever heard of that term, I just knew it wasn’t right to pay me for having children.
