Obama Leads Nation in Moment of Silence for Arizona Victims

WASHINGTON (AP) — A somber President Barack Obama led a moment of silence on Monday for a nation stunned by an attempted assassination against an Arizona congresswoman that left her gravely wounded, several other injured and six people dead.
On a frigid Washington morning, the president and first lady Michelle Obama walked out of the White House to the sounding of a bell at 11 a.m. EST. Wearing overcoats, they stood next to each other on the South Lawn, each with their hands clasped, heads bowed and eyes closed.
After a minute of silence, they walked inside, the president‘s hand on the first lady’s back.
The moment also was marked on the steps of the U.S. Capitol and around the nation at the direction of the president, who called for the country to come together in prayer or reflection for those killed and those fighting to recover. In total, 19 people were shot in the shooting rampage in Tucson, Ariz. on Saturday. Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot point-blank in the head, and she remains in intensive care. Among the six people killed were Arizona’s chief federal judge, a 9-year-old girl interested in government, and one of Giffords’ aides.
More than 300 White House staff members, from senior advisers to members of the kitchen staff and maintenance crews, joined the Obamas on the South Lawn. Up Pennsylvania Avenue, hundreds of congressional staffers gathered on the east steps of the Capitol to observe the moment of silence.
Congress was not in session Monday and most of those participating were employees of congressional offices and others who work in the Capitol.
Prosecutors have charged 22-year-old Jared Loughner with one count of attempted assassination of a member of Congress, two counts of killing an employee of the federal government and two counts of attempting to kill a federal employee. More charges are expected.
House Speaker John Boehner told lawmakers in a conference call Sunday to “pull together as an institution.”
“What is critical is that we stand together at this dark time as one body,” he said. “We need to rally around our wounded colleague, the families of the fallen and the people of Arizona’s 8th District. And, frankly, we need to rally around each other.”
Giffords, a Democrat, represents Arizona’s 8th District.
House business this week, including a contentious vote scheduled for Wednesday to repeal Obama’s new health care law, has been postponed to focus on any necessary actions in the shooting aftermath. Connecticut Rep. John Larson, who heads the House Democratic Caucus, said that lawmakers will continue to have open sessions with their constituents, although they are likely to take more precautions.
Giffords’ orbiting brother-in-law, astronaut Scott Kelly, called for a moment of silence aboard the International Space Station and at all the flight control centers around the world.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 11:57amThis is a golden opportunity for him to step up and be a real leader. Saying nothing about those who are “jumping to conclusions” as we were told NOT TO DO after Fort Hood. I think Daley knows what he needs to say and do but so far his silence toward those who are blaming Sarah Palin is telling AND a big mistake for him. Wouldn‘t he gain a lot of respect by asking them NOT to say those things out of respect of the dead and because we don’t know the facts? Oh well.. Isuppose I shouldn’t help him out with such common sense ideas.
Report Post »He remains silent i think because he thinks this rhetoric will hurt Sarah Palin. Wrong. When someone is wrongly blamed for something normal people take their side NOT the blamers side.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 11:56amHow tragic the loss this weekend of the victims of the horrible shooting rampage in Arizona!
This evil act is not about gun control, or the left or the right. It is irresponsible to play the blame game over this shooting rampage by one very sick-minded individual! People should careful injecting opinions about the political discourse of this country AT THIS TIME! Stop the blame game of the right OR left. This is one sick young man who did a horrible thing. It is not the gun’s fault! It is not the right’s fault. It is not the left’s fault. It is not talk radio or Fox News fault. It is not Keith Olbermann’s fault. It is not Sarah Palin’s fault (if Sarah Palin had been the one who was shot, what words would be flying across your screen today???!!!). It is not the Tea Party’s fault. And it is not Obama’s fault. It is the fault of the sick-minded man who planned it out and went on a rampage! It is dangerous to play this blame game, unfairly pointing fingers of blame at innocent people.
And, please, the young man who did this is not a believer. He is anti-God. He is spiritually lost. As hard as it is, those of us who believe in God, in addition to praying for the victims and their families/friends, should also be praying for Laughner’s soul. He will be punished for this horrific crime against humanity. In the meantime, let cooler heads prevail.

You have been watching too much of Joy Behar, the View, Keith Olberman and the rest of the MSNBC commies. A moment of silence is a photo-op only. The true and right action would have been for the President to have led the nation in prayer to the almighty creator GOD asking for his guidance, strength and love for the families who lost loved ones.
My prayer is that My GOD will comfort those families.

This loss to the families of the fallen and the injured is bad enough; we need to also cover the stories of the heros who arose when it happened and afterwards.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 1:23pm@ Hiking, throughout my life I remember tragedies after which ceremonies would be organized in which the person leading the ceremony would usually either lead people in shared prayer or would say a leading prayer and then ask for a minute of silence for people to reflect individually on the leading prayer or perhaps pray themselves. Obama has skills and lacks others. During a press conference, he has the skills to alude to a tragic event in a somber manner and state that he and others should keep the victims in their prayers. Most people can do that. Invoking a group prayer to be reflected on during a following moment of silence is not in his skill arsenal. He probably has never done this. There are very defined purposes to each long learned skill in his arsenal. He has no use for that particular one. A moment of silence like the one we just witnessed has no depth – walk in – stand silent – walk out. I guess we can therefore characterize his press conferences as moments of noise…

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 3:01pmyea…not only were there no prayers, but on Saturday at his press conference, there were no “God Bless the victims” or “God Bless America” or “God Bless….anything”…make’s it all pretty clear; Obama is certainly not a Christian!

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 3:39pmI would bet that THAT IS is Jim Wallis (I spelled his name incorrectly before) standing to the left of Michelle…Glenn has reported extensively about Mr. Wallis…also, he is a self-proclaimed Marxist. Once again, if this is Mr. Wallis in the picture standing “in line’ with the President and First Lady of our great land, and, I believe that it is…Mr. Obama has proven that he will flaunt “his agenda” for all the world to see, even while supposedly paying respects to those innocent victims of Saturdays massacre…
“Frontpage Magazine (March 17, 2009) reports, “The most notable of [Obama's] spiritual advisers today is his friend of many years, Rev. Jim Wallis.” Rev. Wallis admits that he and Obama have “been talking faith and politics for a long time.” He was picked by Obama to draft the faith-based policies of his campaign at the Democratic National Convention in Denver last year. Why should this alarm us?
First, Jim Wallis has had relationships with the communist Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES).
Second, his “Witness for Peace” was an attempt to defend the Nicaraguan [Communist] Sandinistas! Wallis, together with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright (Obama’s former pastor of 20 years) “rallied support for the communist Nicaraguan regime and protested actions by the United States which supported the anti-communist Contra rebels” (Family World News, February 2009, p. 7).
Third, Wallis and his Sojourners community of fellow-travelers believe Fidel Castro’s Cuba, Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela, Daniel Ortega’s Nicaragua and the other revolutionary forces “restructuring socialist societies” are the communist paradises the United States needs to emulate in order to establish “social justice.” Writing in the November 1983 issue of Sojourners, Jacob Laksin notes, “Jim Wallis and Jim Rice drafted what would become the charter of leftist activists committed to the proliferation of communist revolutions in Central America” (Laksin, “Sojourners: History,
Activities and Agendas” in Discoverthenetworks.org., 2005).
Bible believing Christians MUST wake up to what is going on in our churches. We must also pray that Barack Obama will somehow trust Jesus Christ as his Savior. These friends of his apparently have no idea of how to trust Jesus Christ. Obama won’t have the vision or wisdom to reject these lies until or unless he is a Believer in Jesus Christ.”

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 3:49pmDo you think these communists actually care about 6 deaths?
Report Post »What about the thousands of war victims that died in Iraq and Afghanistan?
What about the 9/11 deaths? What about the fact that one person dies every 11 seconds in America? Do we give a moment of silence every 11 seconds? NO.
This is like watching a reality show except those scripted shows look more real than this.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 4:33pmOkay, I apologize…I played the video and I think the man to the left of Michelle is too young to be Jim Wallis (“spiritual” adviser to Obama)…Again, sorry, could have saved myself getting all fuzzed up (of course, it still doesn’t change the fact that Wallis IS Obama “spiritual” adviser)…I still am wondering who the heck he is…would be odd placement for the Secret Service, wouldn’t it?

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 6:15pmPalin is responsible. End of story.
If I hear one more conservatard tell me that the shooter stalked this victim for years before palin was on the scene. Or it was the democrats who first placed bullseyes on a map. Or the nonsence about Obama and the gun knife statement im gonna loose it. KIETH OBERMAN said it was palin and becks fault. Thats good enough for me.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 11:26pmYou know, the Bible teaches us that God is Love…PURE LOVE…unlike any kind of Love that we can understand…The Bible also says that God cannot look upon evil…I say this because I often think of Him sitting up there looking down on our Country…a Country that he once Blessed so Abundantly…and I picture Him weeping…but…I know that this is just my human way of making Him more like us…I know that WE must be more like HIM…life is hard and it is hard to understand when things like this happen…it truly is a test of our FAITH!
This may sound strange…but I can actually better understand the sickness of the man who committed these murders a lot more so than I can understand how someone like Obama can have been blessed with so much…to be elected to the most powerful position in the entire world…and yet he is so cold and calculating (so is his wife)…he has purposely done so much harm to our great nation…so many people are suffering because of what he has done…I’d even go so far as to say that we will probably see a lot more of these kinds of violent outbursts, particularly when people who have mental conditions that require medications can not afford their drugs because of the economic depression…If you haven’t read the book, “One Second After”…get it…it’s fiction…but…very insightful…
