Deja Vu: Obama Again Equates America‘s Greatness With Gov’t Spending

Appearing at a Democratic National Committee meeting in San Francisco, the president linked America’s greatness to government spending—for the second time this month.
CNS News reports:
“Let me tell you something,” Obama said to applause from the crowd at Nob Hill Masonic Center in San Francisco on Apr. 20. “I will not reduce our deficit by sacrificing the things that have always made America great. The things that have made Americans prosper.”
He went on to say:
“The America we know is great not because of our skyscrapers or the size of our GDP. It’s because we’ve been able to keep two ideas together at the same time,” Obama said. “The first idea is that we are all individuals endowed with certain inalienable rights and liberties; that we are self-reliant; we are entrepreneurs. We don’t expect others to do for us what we can do for ourselves, and we don’t really like people telling us what to do.”
He added that “the second idea” is just as important as the first idea. That second idea is “that we’re all in this together; that we look out for one another; that I am my brother’s keeper; that I am my sister’s keeper.”
Hence, the president will not sacrifice “investments in education….science and basic research….clean energy” as part of the budget cuts. “I will not sacrifice America’s future,” he concluded.
Just a few weeks ago, Obama made a similar claim, saying, “We would not be a great country without those commitments”:
‘There but for the grace of God go I,’ we say to ourselves, and so we contribute to programs like Medicare and Social Security, which guarantee us health care and a measure of basic income after a lifetime of hard work; unemployment insurance, which protects us against unexpected job loss; and Medicaid, which provides care for millions of seniors in nursing homes, poor children, and those with disabilities…We are a better country because of these commitments. I’ll go further – we would not be a great country without those commitments.
“Those commitments” refer to entitlements like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.
The president’s remarks come at a time of fierce debate over the U.S. debt. In that debate, the Republicans have been pushing for spending cuts and entitlement reform as part of a budget proposal, while Obama has been pushing for “investment” (i.e. spending) and tax hikes.

I know, the tax codes and IRS suck, but why did they not practice what they are preaching and return at least the “return” check? The Chairman and CEO of IBM, Samuel J. Palmisano, approached Obama and members of his administration before the healthcare bill debates with a plan that would reduce healthcare expenditures by $900 billion. Given the Obama Administration’s adamancy that the U.S. simply had to make healthcare (read: health insurance) affordable for even the most dedicated welfare recipient, one would think he would have said, “Tell me more!”
The cost to the federal government for this program was nothing. In the end and after two meetings, President Obama and his team, instead of embracing a program that was proven to save money and one that was projected to save almost one trillion dollars – a private sector program costing the taxpayers nothing, zip, nada, zilch – said, “Thanks but no thanks” and then embarked on passing one of the most despised pieces of legislation in US history.
Samuel J. Palmisano, the Chairman of the Board and CEO for IBM, said in a recent Wall Street Journal interview that he offered to provide Obama with a program that would curb healthcare claims fraud and abuse by almost one trillion dollars but the Obama White House turned the offer down.
Mr. Palmisano is quoted as saying during a taping http://video.foxnews.com/v/4366002/did-white-house-snub-fraud-fighter/ of The Wall Street Journal’s Viewpoints program on September 14, 2010:
“We could have improved the quality and reduced the cost of the healthcare system by $900 billion… I said we would do it for free to prove that it works. They turned us down.”
A second meeting between Mr. Palmisano and the Obama & Co. took place two weeks later, with no change in Obama’s stance. A call placed to IBM on October 8, 2010, by FOX News confirmed, via a spokesperson, that Mr. Palmisano stands by his statement.
Speaking with FOX News’ Stuart Varney, Mort Zuckerman, Editor-in-Chief of US News & World Report, said, “It’s a little bit puzzling because I think there is a huge amount of both fraud and inefficiency that American business is a lot more comfortable with and more effective in trying to reduce. And this is certainly true because the IBM people have studied this very carefully. And when Palmisano went to the White House and made that proposal, it was based upon a lot of work and it was not accepted. And it’s really puzzling…These are very, very responsible people and don’t have a political ax to grind.

Posted on April 25, 2011 at 6:38pmEconomic cycles became much more manageable after the safety net and welfare state was enacted after WWII. For those that want to return the country to 1909, you ought to consider that we’d be in a much worse Great Depression right now if it were not for government counter-cyclical spending. The ability to get insurance existed before WWII, but it was the development of government insurance that allowed people to spend personal income and cause our country to boom in the 50‘s and 60’s. Look at China, where there is little consumer-driven growth except at the highest echelons of society. Why? They have to save 30% of their income to make sure that they have health care. If we go back to that system, then you will see saving rates have to skyrocket and consumer spending plummet. The economy will go back into recession.
I wonder whether Republicans actually understand that there is a balance here between the vision of hyper-competitive markets and the need for a safety net. Very few of us would like to turn the clock back 100 years on American economic progress. I think this is what the President is referring to…or at least that is what I would be highlighting if I were him.

The brush that I was using was referring to conservatives, not the liberals whose hands are always out for what they can get.
You will find no conservative who will say that the more a government spends, the more money the government can steal from those who have incomes and pay taxes, the more businesses the government can drive out of the country to boost the economy of another country, or that the more control a government has over our lives, the better off the country and its citizens are. Ain’t happening!
We are not tolerating our demise. What we are doing is getting prepared. We may have to prepare for the worst, or we may have to prepare for simple survival, but not a demise. I am of the opinion that there is something going on in D.C. that ius going to surprise a LOT of people. Perhaps Congress itself has waked up?
