Business Insider: ‘Obama Is About to Give a Huge Class Warfare Speech’

Looking to channel Theodore Roosevelt, President Obama will deliver an economic speech Tuesday and cite the importance of everyone paying their “fair share.”
Obama will travel to Osawatomie, Kansas to make the remarks — the site of the progressive Republican Roosevelt’s “New Nationalism” speech in 1910.
The White House confirmed the Roosevelt connection in a press release, stating, “Just over one hundred years ago, President Teddy Roosevelt came to Osawatomie, Kansas and called for a New Nationalism, where everyone gets a fair chance, a square deal, and an equal opportunity to succeed.”
Obama will “talk about how he sees this as a make-or-break moment for the middle class and all those working to join it,” the statement said. “He’ll lay out the choice we face between a country in which too few do well while too many struggle to get by, and one where we’re all in it together – where everyone engages in fair play, everyone does their fair share, and everyone gets a fair shot.”
Business Insider, which described it as “a huge class warfare speech,” has more on the Obama-Roosevelt connection:
Roosevelt‘s ’New Nationalism’ speech on August 31, 1910 called for new government reforms to level the playing field for average Americans against a class of industrial barons.
“The essence of any struggle for healthy liberty has always been, and must always be, to take from some one man or class of men the right to enjoy power, or wealth, or position, or immunity, which has not been earned by service to his or their fellows,” Roosevelt said. “That is what you fought for in the Civil War, and that is what we strive for now.”
Roosevelt called out special interests who pulled the strings of government — a message we’ll likely hear Obama adopt.
“Class warfare” became a buzzword in September after Obama proposed the “Buffett rule” tax rate on the wealthy. As Republican opposition rang in, Obama responded by declaring, “This is not class warfare. It’s math.” He shifted positions just two days later, saying of the class warfare jab, “I wear that charge as a badge of honor.”

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 8:23pmThe term “class warfare” is Luntz approved right wing language to suggest that Democrats are against people making money. And you buy into that. But the real truth is that Republicans have been waging war against the poor and middle class – that’s me and you – for years. Income for the top 1% has tripled in the last 30 years, while your real income has either remanded the same or declined if you’re in the lower 1/5 of Americans. The rich are getting richer and you are staying in the same spot or actually going down hill?
That’s not because the richest have gotten three times smarter or created three times as many jobs. It’s because rich people help get people elected who will make them even more rich. Political donations are an investment. So the richest get tax cuts, at the behest of the legislators they’ve bought, and you end up paying more of your income to compensate.
Class warfare is real, and you and I are losing and have been for years. You may want your taxes raised so that the millionaires and billionaires can make even more money but I don’t.

Report Post »I am pretty sure that no ne will argue that rthere is way too much money going to politicians for favors. That is why the fair tax, flat tax, and removing loopholes are so popular. But the realy question is, the 1% makes around 18% of the income but pay 38% of the income taxes. Yes, ther are some who manage to not pay, but the majority do.So how is it fair to ask them to pay more when close to 50% of the people contribute nothing… then condemn those who pay for all the benefits they recieve? Why are those who provide everything for us (roads, education, defense, welfare services, exc) being villified by the president and many democrats yet they say nothing to those who only take from the system? I am sure that many would be willing to pay more for their country if 1.The leaders thanked them for all they do 2.Everyone payed something, even if it was just 1-2% 3.The government did not waste much of the hard earned money they do pay for the country. Yet all that is occuring is they are constantly being attacked for all they do for this country.

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 9:35pmHey JZS! Dingbat! How do you expect that YOU will escape having your taxes raised if it relies on increasing taxes on the top 1%?
Do you even KNOW that they could outright CONFISGATE ALL of the money and assets owned by the 1% and it would supply for the spending in Washington for about 9 DAYS? And in the process they will have “Killed the Golden Goose”, and ANY HOPE of us working for the Private Sector. If you think it’s Hell on Wheels working for an “All Powerful” CEO, try having NO CHOICE but to work for a Tyrannical Government who has ALL THE JOBS in Their Pocket!
And this is what Obama and the Dems did only in the first 2 1/2 years of his Presidency, with PLENTY of Vocal Protests. WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE do you think they would do if we ENCOURAGE THEM in that direction?
Do you think for one minute that they would behave ANY DIFFERENTLY than the Drunk who says, “Juss one mer’ drink, then I’rll go SOBER”?
NO WAY! If they retain power they will consider us all “Indentured Servants” of the Political Class, and their BOUGHT AND PAID FOR Allies.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 2:41pmI can see that a lot here are saying that “50% of American pay no taxes” which is obviously false. Clearly you are parroting your favorite radio show host without any intervention from your brain. You mean they don’t pay sales tax at the store?
The origin of that falsehood is the fact that, at the deepest part of the recession, ~50% of Americans didn’t pay Federal Income Tax. That is true. That includes people who didn’t have an income – maybe you want them to pay income taxes? It includes retired people on Social Security. How much do you want them to pay? It includes folks raising a family on less that $20K a year. For somebody like that, even 1% tax would be a hardship, where a millionaire would not even notice a 1% increase, he wouldn’t cancel the order on that new jet. There’s a difference.
Even those who didn’t pay Federal Income tax were, if they were working, paying payroll taxes, property taxes if they own a home, sales taxes and so on.
50% of American paid no tax? That is one big Republican lie you have accepted without the involvement of your brain cells, zombie-lie.
Please don’t respond and say “oh, you know what I meant.” Just stop repeating lies that you hear without thinking. You’re smarter than that.

Why? Because it’s not about the answer… it’s about his image. He has to make himself out to be a man for the middle class…. despite the fact that he’s hurt the middle class more than anyone in recent history. It’s not about the truth… it’s all about image. He can’t debate on the objective facts. He can’t run for re-election based on past performance, so he has to make this election about something else. He has to spin a good story that will energize his base. This election is going to be all about class warfare baby! Going after those evil greedy capitalists! Does that mean they are not intelligent? I do understand he is covering his intentions with the class warfare but we should all know that is just a smokescreen. Socialism, communism, marxism and fascism do not have a middle class and any liberal can discover that with a little research. But I guess they refuse to do any research. Posted on December 4, 2011 at 2:41pmThe progressives are either ignorant, or complicit. I believe the latter, and that they also believe the changes won’t be applied to them. They are in for a rude awakening if they truly get their way. The useful idiots will be the first to go, and when there is nothing left to steal from the rest of us, including our lives, the elite will begin cannibalizing each other.

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 1:47pmIt is fitting that Obama should channel the anti-Republican Progressive Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt was not a Real Republican. He was a Progressive. If he was alive today, he could not be elected to office as a Republican, not even in New York state. Remember, in 1912 he founded the Progressive (Bull Moose) Party to run as a third party candidate, splitting the Republican vote resulting in the election of Wilson.

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 2:57pmIf the popular and electoral votes count, Teddy in 1912 got a majority of the Republican vote. What he did not get was the endorsement of the Republican establishment and professional politicians. He won most of the Republican primaries, which already counted for something, and so could claim to be the choice of rank-and-file Republicans, but in most states the professionals still ran things and they stayed loyal to Taft.

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 4:15pmAs I recall, at the 1912 Republican convention, there was more popular support for Roosevelt than Taft, but Taft had the support of the party leaders, so he won the nomination. Roosevelt walked out with his supporters and formed the Progressive (Bull Moose) Party.
I think in the 1912 general election Roosevelt got more votes than Taft, but Wilson (the Democrat) won.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 9:12pmPerhaps Teddy was the last real Republican. And you are right, he couldn’t win a Republican Primary today. You act like you think that’s a criticism of Roosevelt. Actually it says a lot more about what the GOP has become. You realize Reagan couldn’t win a primary in 2012 either, right? Way too liberal for these tea-party geniuses. There used to be a time when a Republican could stand for the middle class, the little guy, the environment, or diplomacy and not be called Marxist, socialist, communist, unconstitutional or a traitor by a small group of people who most certainly do not know the meaning of any of those words. Keep searching for the next Reagan or Teddy Roosevelt to lead the GOP, you won’t find them, the tea-baggers killed them all.
