Obama Losing Jewish Support in Key Swing State — But Why Now?

Florida is home to one of the largest Jewish demographics in the United States. In fact, the Sunshine State falls behind only New York, California, and of course, Israel, when it comes to the world’s Jewish population centers.
What’s more, Jews overwhelmingly vote Democratic — and more so than any other demographic to date — even though liberalism seems, at first glance, incompatible with Jewish ideals and values.
To illustrate just how strong Jewish support for Democrats is, take into account that Obama, arguably the least Israel-friendly U.S. president to date, garnered a staggering 78 percent of the Jewish vote. Not even Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who many view as liberal, could capture the hearts and minds of most Jewish voters. But recent polling data in the key swing state could suggest trouble — at least a modicum of it — is on the horizon for Obama where his Jewish support is concerned.
According to the Boston Globe, Jewish political activists and demographers posit that the president could lose anywhere from 3 to low-double-digits percentage points in the upcoming election. While this number may not seem significant, the Jews constitute a roughly 4 percent of the state’s population yet typically account for between 5 and 6 percent of voters in Florida.
Indeed, “a small shift in the Jewish vote can make a difference,” Ira Sheskin, a University of Miami professor and director of its Jewish Demography Project told the Globe.
While the economy remains the primary concern of Jewish voters, according to surveys, and Obama will likely assail Romney over Medicare because he is weak on Israel, Rep. Paul Ryan might assuage Jewish voters’ concerns on both the economic and entitlement-front.
The Globe continues:
Any significant erosion of Obama’s support among the 639,000 Jews who live in Florida would have an outsize impact because their turnout could be near or more than 90 percent, Sheskin said. And any shift in Florida, as political analysts quickly point out, can be golden. In 2000, the state — and the presidency — were decided by a bitterly disputed margin of 537 votes that propelled George W. Bush to victory over Al Gore. [...]
But even if a shift is fairly small, the reliability of the Jewish vote seems less ironclad. For example, the co-founder of a pro-Obama super-PAC estimated that 15 percent of Jewish voters who backed Obama in 2008 are reconsidering their support.
“We have had to spend much more time than we did in ’08, talking to people whom I would call the base of the Democratic Party, to get them reengaged,” said Mik Moore, co-founder of the super PAC Jewish Council for Education and Research.
Moore added that Romney’s expenditures in Jewish-outreach seem to be working. “They have been so narrow in their pitch, so focused on issues such as Israel.”
And while Democratic stalwarts in the state, like Debbie Wasserman Schultz, are on the offensive, even Rabbis at traditionally liberal Jewish congregations admit that there is a shift in the atmosphere. The Globe continues:
“In my congregation, there’s still lots of support for Obama,” said Rabbi Barry Silver, who leads a reform synagogue in Lake Worth, Fla., just south of West Palm Beach. “However, since the last election, I have noticed Obama’s support slipping across all denominational lines.”
Part of that erosion is because of the economy, Silver said, but part is also because of Israel. In the rabbi’s view, that concern has been exploited and inflamed by Romney and the Republicans.
“Obama’s position on Israel has been misrepresented by conservatives who are trying to distort the truth,” said Silver, who organized a debate titled “Obama and Israel: Friend or Foe” that turned raucous at his synagogue in May.
Oddly, Silver condemns Republicans for being “intolerant of anyone that they perceived as not sufficiently pro-Israel.”
Despite the consensus that President Obama will surely lose up to several percentage points when it comes to the Jewish vote this election, one thing is certain: he will still garner the majority of their vote.

Posted on August 21, 2012 at 3:41amWell, first of all, even though religious Jews by custom give 10% – 20% of their net income to charity, it really is a communal obligation in Judaism. So this is one reason even religious Jews might vote Liberal. Another is that because the Jewish population as a whole almost completely lost its religion due to pressure to assimilate (a dirty word to any religious Jew) into the greater (culturally Christian) society. Most of those who remain belong to libreal religious denominations (, which, like their Christian counterparts, have replaced the Bible with the DNC platform.
One other thing. Even Jews who vote Republican tend to be registered Democrats because they live in places where the Democratic primary decides the election.

Why these particular groups of people continue to vote for whacked out liberals is beyond me. Wait I think I know. Jews vote whacko because they think of the right as Nazi’s…hmmmm…Nazi’s definition National Socialists…that’s left not right. Catholics…Must be the abundance of paganism present in their religion. Posted on August 21, 2012 at 11:30amNot really. If you know anything about history, you will know that the first communist revolutionaries began their evangelism in the synagogues of Russia and Belarus. They did what Rev. Wright and his ilk are doing in Christian churches today – conflating communist ideology with religion. The descendants of many of the Russian Jews that were “converted” by Leon Trotsky et al still hold fast to the belief that communism will bring about conditions on earth that will welcome the Messiah (commies will build a heaven on earth, in other words.) That’s why the “reform” Jews – who actually are more secular than they are religious – gladly follow the Democrat party line, while conservative and Orthodox Jews who still have religious values AND know history are running away from what they know to be a repeat performance of 1918 and 1936.

I guarantee you, Obama can‘t understand why more people don’t want his handouts in lieu of jobs…just like socialist Europe. I see a confused man who really believes in the European mass slavery to government.

That’s simply not true. Blacks typically vote 90% Democratic, and in the cas of Obama, higher still.
Come on, The Blaze, accuracy matters.
On the larger issue: I agree that the Jewish vote for Democrats is significantly misguided. The same is true for the Black vote. Forty years ago there may have been a good argument…but now? With blacks being destroyed by a culture of dependency, and the Democratic party infested by anti-Semites and anti-Israel sentiment…it doesn’t stand to reason.
Of course, though, very little of what people do is based on reason. People have certain cultural loyalties, and social pressure makes it very difficult to rethink certain “obvious truths.”

What are the hell do these Jews have to do with what is going on now? Comparing liking someone and voting for him even though his distaste for your right to exist in your own home land is clearly seen and being a brillant scientist have nothing in common… Please explain your arguement.

Posted on August 21, 2012 at 5:23amThere is a very good historical explanation why Jews (secular, not religious) lean heavily to the left in addition to the concept of Tikkun Olam. Starting in the late-20s and early 30s it was the extremely idealistic young members of socialist-zionist youth groups (all nice middle class kids, mind you — they couldn‘t get the ’proletariat’ Jewish youth interested) who foresaw the vital need to get out of Europe when few others did. They envisioned building a utopia in Israel and they were the only ones who created a real pipe-line for getting people out. They established kibbutzim in Israel and training kibbutzim in Poland, Hungary etc to ready members to leave for the promised land. They got a lot of people out. During the war, it was the socialist-zionist youth movements (specifically the youth movement I grew up in Habonim-Dror, along with Hashomer Hatzair) that managed to organize and carry out resistance — e.g., the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. The youth group members fought back against the Nazis. After the war, it was Habonim-Dror that organized the Aliya Bet — the getting of Jewish survivors of the camps out of Europe and to Israel, defying British guns to do so.
Most of these surviving members became not so socialist and certainly less idealistic as they grew older. But, thank G-d for the idealism of youth…

Posted on August 21, 2012 at 9:17amIsrael‘s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Ehud Barak said the Obama White House has been the most supportive administration throughout the two countries’ diplomatic relations on matters of Israeli security, in an interview to air Monday on “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.”
Barak -also a former prime minister of Israel – said that though historically administrations from both political parties have supported the Jewish state President Obama’s support, security-wise, is unparalleled.
“I think that from my point of view as defense minister they are extremely good, extremely deep and profound. I can see long years, um, administrations of both sides of political aisle deeply supporting the state of Israeli and I believe that reflects a profound feeling among the American people,” said Barak. “But I should tell you honestly that this administration under President Obama is doing in regard to our security more than anything that I can remember in the past.”

It is the conservative movement that backs Isreal in international affairs, while liberals are more likely to lean towards communism – the enemy of the Jewish people.

Posted on August 20, 2012 at 9:31pmLOL, Soy. I‘ve tried to expand on GB’s definition, but they aren’t buying it. Progressivism equals Fabian Socialists to Blazers. That’s it. Of course the moderators don‘t like it when I spell it out so they’re still social conservatives in their minds. I’ve even linked quotes about the Temperance folks, drug laws, and expansion of federal police force established during the progressive era, and Wendell Holme’s/Bandies dissents that they use to justify the expansion of federal government, but they’re not going to listen to anyone but Fox and GB. Not to mention our foreign policy being discussed in a Wilsonian think tank that the folks that own the media are members of. They like their wars though.

Even worse than that was Paul’s affection for Socialist Bernie Sanders. But that’s okay… it’s all about “end the fed” right?

Yes, when you find someone who agrees with you on a particular issue – it is worth forming alliances for the issue in question.
I know you think everything in terms of military – how about communist Russia in WWII. Everyone knew Stalin was a monster. But yet we joined forces to beat Hitler…..Same principle
You should read the article i posted to “therealconservative”….It would do you some good as well

Posted on August 20, 2012 at 10:21pmSOY. That dog won’t hunt. Ron Paul has a history of pandering to the worst that roams America (not to mention our enemies)… anyone who will listen and agree with his mostly idiotic musings to further HIS and whatever THEIR agendas may be in the end.
I don‘t think I’d quite like Louis Farrakhan heaping a whole lot of praise on me like he did with your boy Paul, plus the likes of David Duke (among various other racists, bigots and anti-Semites).
Paul would ally himself with Satan if the devilish old boy yelped END THE FED!! Paul has basically sold his soul to the devil on countless occasions to further his BS ideological agenda and my Military mind tells me I would like to see him face a firing squad for his treasonous actions, anti-American rhetoric, along with aid and comfort to our enemies if you want to know the truth…

So did you understand the article? You now know what a progressive is. Did you see the following…
“The present crisis did not appear out of nowhere, and didn’t simply begin with the election of Barack Obama. Politicians of both parties spent the better part of the 20th century disregarding the Constitution, as they looked to have government step up to solve every conceivable human problem.”
Report Post »justangry
Posted on August 20, 2012 at 11:12pm@Real, I’d love to discuss it, but censorship is bad on the subject. During the progressive era, the progressives GB describes had help from what we call social conservatives today. They had different goals of course, but ended up using some key dissents to change the standard view of constitutionalism that allowed them to bypass the amendment process to expand the federal government beyond the enumerated powers outlined in the Constitution. This school of thought has taken us away from natural law, or the idea that our rights come from a higher authority than man. I’d encourage you to verify what I’m saying by looking into the Progressive Era, dissents by Wendell Holmes Jr. and the theory of Constitutionalism that came about during that period. A good place to start is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Constitution. I’m not telling you to use this as a reference, just get the idea of the key players, generally what they believe, etc.

I‘m also not sure the Neocons and their CFR owned media here would let us know about anti war sentiment in Israel because they’re always looking for an excuse to murder and have our boys get killed for BS.
