Obama Makes ‘Socialist’ Quip During Debt Town Hall

During his town hall meeting in Maryland today on the debt crisis, President Obama found time to answer critics who think his position (and positions) have a socialist flavor. And he joked about it.

“This isn’t just some wild-eyed socialist position, it’s the position being taken by people of both parties and no party,“ he said with with a smirk as the audience chuckled and after talking about ”shared sacrifice:”

Obama seems well aware of his critics. For example, on radio today Glenn Beck labeled the president a “Marxist.”

Less than two weeks away from a debt ceiling deadline, President Barack Obama sought Friday to pressure House Republicans to come around to a deal that he insisted must include new taxes — which he calls “revenues” — as well as spending cuts.

At the same time, even with no clear end in sight to negotiations that have dragged on for weeks, the president asserted that the U.S. has never defaulted on its debt and won’t do so now.

“The United States of America doesn’t run out without paying the tab. We pay our bills. We meet our obligations,” Obama said at a town hall meeting at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Asserting that the American people as well as many in Congress are on board with his approach of mixing higher taxes for some with steep spending cuts, the president said, “The only people we have left to convince are some folks in the House of Representatives and we’re going to keep working on that.”

House conservatives have resisted higher tax revenues and some Democrats have come to fear Obama would give ground and agree to a deal with spending alone. Obama made clear that taxes needed to be in the mix.

“If we only did it with cuts, if we did not get any revenue to help close this gap between how much money‘s coming in and how much money’s going out, then a lot of ordinary people would be hurt and the country as a whole would be hurt and that doesn’t make any sense. It’s not fair,” Obama said.

“This isn’t about punishing wealth, it‘s about asking people who’ve benefited the most over the last decade to share in the sacrifice,” the president said.

In behind-the-scenes talks Obama continues to reach for a “grand bargain” of up to $4 trillion over a decade, including some $3 trillion in cuts and $1 trillion in new taxes. Even though he’s working with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, on the approach, it’s not clear whether it will find enough support in Congress to pass – or at least to pass in time.

In response to a question from a member of the university audience, Obama made a lengthy pitch Friday for the virtues of compromise – something that has seemed hard to find in the debt limit debate.

“This notion that somehow if you‘re responsible and you compromise that somehow you’re giving up your convictions, that’s absolutely not true,” Obama said, blaming gerrymandered congressional districts among other factors for the problem, saying many lawmakers feel that making political accommodations with the other side in Washington can end up causing them to be challenged in their own parties for re-election at home.

He also dismissed a strategy promoted by some liberals as a possible solution, the notion that the constitution might give the president the ability to proceed unilaterally in raising the debt limit without congressional approval.

“I have talked to my lawyers, they are not persuaded that that is a winning argument,” he said.

The 14th Amendment states that the “validity of the public debt… shall not be questioned,” language that some scholars claim gives the president the authority to increase borrowing authority on his own

Obama’s answer Friday suggested for the first time that he had actually considered the issue. Two weeks ago, Obama said, “I don’t think we should even get to the constitutional issue.”

Wouldn’t people who have been on govt. assistance like welfare for a long time be the people who have benifited most from the system? How about asking them to contribute? They actually benifit more than the rich. The rich have to do things to get their money, welfare receps. do nothing to get their money.

The next person asks the same question, and over and over until he answers it PLAINLY, or throws a fit and storms off stage. It drives me crazy that folks let him bamboozle them and then move on to something totally unrelated. People, coordinate your efforts. Get as many people as you can to cooperate and do this.
Just keep after him. If he dodges a question, the next person should say, “That was very nice, but you didn’t answer the question.” Restate the question and keep doing it until he answers it. Ask him why he thinks he’s so much smarter than the American people. That would be a good opener. Or why he hangs out with Terrorists like Ayers.

Only tax rates that are the lowest since the 50′s are capital gains rates, and the only ones that really helps are rich liberal bankers and wall street types that pump money to the democrats. The tax rates sure aren’t the lowest on working class Americans making between 30k and 500k a year.

You are intelligent enough to understand that even if you divided up all the money in our country evenly amongst everyone, within 5-7 years, those 20% would AGAIN have 93% of the wealth, aren’t you? The reason they have wealth is because, for the most part, they work their butts off for it with long, hard hours, ingenuity, investments, and more. It don’t just fall in their laps — apparently like you are assuming that ‘trickle down’ should do.

Every time I have met and talked with someone like you, the ignorance and laziness amazes me; your type think you should be able to get rich by putting in a measly 40 hours a week and investing absolutely nothing but your time. Real people that achieve the American Dream put in at least twice as much time as that, they work weekends and holidays, they use their earnings to make more money by investing in their businesses, creating new jobs for people to work at, coming up with new, creative ideas, and so much more. People who think like you will never understand that even though the concept is quite simple.

As to taxes, how much is enough? I know I pay around 50% of my income in taxes and I don’t make near that magical $250K annually. How much is enough? Why do I have to make enough for 2 families to live we

Give us an iron clad balanced budget amendment, THEN we’ll talk about revenue enhancements to pay down the debt. If they did this, I would be open to a “value add” tax if it was somehow made impossible for it to go to anything but paying down the deficit. I’m talking a 1 cent national sales tax that expires when the debt is retired. Too bad you can’t trust the people in charge of it. It would probably end up as another boondoggle.

Its a damn shame that the first black president had to be so devisive. I believe he has set back race relations 50 years. Why cant black people see how he is destroying them? Have you seen the numbers on the suffering in the black community? Yet they support him almost completely. I never considered my race above my country- how is this possible?

@PUCCI…….mr. obama only uses his being 1/2 black when it benefit’s him……and when the blacks and whites figure that out then maybe (but I doubt it) they will wake up….That being said…
I am a life time Union Member and a VERY PROUD VETERAN………. Who are these people that still support him??? Everyone and I mean everyone that I talk to ….. want him out of office. My Union Brothers understand that this pretend president is destroying our country and our Constitution by deviding us by race and by class….. All of us must work together to prevent this from happening.

I hope you’re right about 2012.My biggest fear is that there wont even be a fair election next year.I believe this admin.is so entrenched that there’s no way they will be willingly voted out.Especially if their buddies in the seiu are responsible for counting votes.

As far as the debt crisis is concerned, why not take a look at foreign aid,for countries that hate us anyway, and the monies are going to arm our enemies? I’ve noticed no one in Washington is talking about pay-cuts to the “professional politicians”. So where’s the shared sacrifice?

Every time he is called a “Socialist” he NEVER denies being one, he [just] demonizes those that call him a “Socialist”.
Honestly, he is a morph between a Marxist and a Nazi. He favors (spreads wealth) like a Marxist, but loves his BIG business payoffs and involvement like a National Socialists. Even his propaganda is that of the Nazi party. Either way he is a traitor..and the Declaration of Independence is clear about traitors.

I agree with the Marxist comment. I also think that he is a traitor to the country and should be treated as such. He has broken his oath I don’t know how many times and failed to keep foeigners out of this country and off the southern border, namely Pakistani’s, etc. coming in here. Does the word impeach come to mind?

He also dismissed a strategy promoted by some liberals as a possible solution, the notion that the constitution might give the president the ability to proceed unilaterally in raising the debt limit without congressional approval.

“I have talked to my lawyers, they are not persuaded that that is a winning argument,” he said.
    ———————————————————————————————–
So he HAS thought about trying that power grab?? Of course he has. Tromping on, ignoring, purposefully twisting & abusing the Constitution is SOP in his mind.

They came up with a workable plan that would increase the ceiling for now and force the government into submission in the future.
Nothing has been proffered by the big chief or his waterboys and girls.

That can’t be right, the government owns way more than 20% of the wealth in the US. The goal of a republic is a few wealthy people at the top, a bunch of middle class people living at a fairly high standard of living, and as few as possible people just starting out at the bottom constantly moving up in society. Much better than the 2 class system that socialism strives for, with 1% very wealthy at the top and 99% filthy peasants at the bottom.

Excuse me I thought the idea of our country is to leave the American people alone to make as much money as they can and/or are willing to do. That is what makes our country great. Not hey go ahead and make as much money as you want but if you make “TOO” much then we’ll just take it from you. Bullcrap!!!! When families are on the verge of backruptcy they don’t go out and spend money and even borrow more so they can spend more. I‘m sorry I’m tired of being considered an idiot because I know that. STOP SPENDING!!!! Stop the bleeding first then you worry about the other problems and possibly looking at getting more in, but NOT until you flippin become responsible with the flippin money you have!!!! Doesn‘t take a rocket scientist just takes responsiblity and that is what this administration and liberal socialist and markist don’t want. Don’t give me that the rich should give more of their money. They came for my neighbor and I said nothing, then they came for me….. old addage and truth. If you let them take their money today guess who they’re going to come after tomorrow when they have more power?!!! WAKE THE HELL UP!

Obama is a socialist. Obama will not get any of his desires done because he does not have the Congress. So his agenda to bring America into socialist compliance will fail.

People, minorities, think before you vote. You liberals have to understand that he is not a liberal but a communist socialist. he wants you to give him your money so he can give it to his friends. Taxing the rich ? he wants to tax you because he knows the rich will simply leave the country. So think. Do not vote for him or other socialists in 2012. Vote to keep your money. You know better what to do with your money. And let the government sacrifice by spending the money they have and not spending money that don’t have. Make sense ? Good, now vote accordingly

Liberals are communist socialists they changed their name to hide. I have never met anyone that called themselves a liberal that ever gave a penny of their money, a second of their time for a cause that they didn’t expect to gain more money/power from it than they put into it.
