Obama: MLK Would Have Approved of Occupy Wall Street Movement

President Barack Obama said Sunday that Martin Luther King Jr. would have approved of the ongoing Occupy Wall Street movement.
Speaking at the dedication for the late civil rights leader’s memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., Obama drew parallels between King’s sense of justice and the demonstrations in New York City against corporate greed.
“If he were alive today, I believe he would remind us that the unemployed worker can rightly challenge the excesses of Wall Street without demonizing all who work there,” Obama said, according to the Washington Times. “Those with power and privilege will often decry any call for change as divisive. They’ll say any challenge to the existing arrangements are unwise and destabilizing. Dr. King understood that peace without justice was no peace at all.”
Watch Obama’s remarks below. Comments about the Occupy Wall Street movement begin around the 15:45 mark.
Other black community leaders used the ceremony to make more overtly partisan statements.
The Washington Times reported:
Former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young told the crowd at the memorial that the GOP was to blame for the recent banking crisis, tracing it back to the repeal in 1999 of provisions of the Glass-Steagall Act, which had separated investment banks from commercial banks.
“Republicans changed that, and now this thing is all messed up,” Mr. Young said.
The repeal was approved by overwhelming bipartisan majorities in the House and Senate, including a majority of Democrats in both chambers, and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton.
Mr. Young also urged the audience to vote for Mr. Obama in 2012, saying the president’s re-election is needed to ensure economic justice, “just like we won voting rights.”
“The first step of that is to keep a person in office who basically has your interests at heart,” Mr. Young said.
Rev. Jesse Jackson called King a “living force” even today, and said if he were still alive, King would be “in the middle of the struggle.”
“Dr. King would make a case for we must measure our character by the way we treat those on the hull of the ship, not just those on the deck of the ship,” Jackson said.
Speaking directly to the Occupy protesters, Jackson urged them to remain nonviolent, stay disciplined, focused and fight for economic and racial justice.
King’s daughter, Rev. Bernice King, also tied the dedication ceremony directly to the Occupy Wall Street movement. The Christian Post notes her claim that God may have used an earthquake and a hurricane to arrange the alignment:
The dedication ceremony had been delayed due to the earthquake that struck Virginia and Hurricane Irene that battered the East Coast in August. Bernice King suggested that those events may have been brought by God so that the dedication ceremony could tie itself to the OWS movement.
“Perhaps God wanted us to move beyond the dream into action, and maybe we were unable to dedicate this monument on August 28 because of that and maybe He’s saying to us, it’s time to readjust,” Bernice King said.
Rev. Al Sharpton, who led a march in Washington D.C. Saturday, said “just as Dr. King talked about occupying Washington, just like those occupying Wall Street, we are going to occupy the voting booth.”
“We are here to say we are going to continue marching,” the MSNBC host said. “You will not undo the King dream. You will not take away the Voting Rights Act. You will not take away the Civil Rights Act. You will not cut back on Medicaid and Medicare to bargain down those rich trillionaires that that ran this country into deficit.”
“This is not about Obama, this is about our mama,” Sharpton said, repeating the same statement he made Saturday. “We will vote like we never voted before.”

He sees Christianity and constitutional rule of law and the judeo/christian world view as the enemy of their atheistic world view. He is at war with all America and our base freedoms and liberty has brought to the world. Dr. Martin Luther King was a brave man of vision, who stood for freedom of oppressed people. My black fellow americans did and do suffer. His stand for freedom and equality I support. It is based on scripture and constitutional ideals that are worth of defending. Pray in faith for our way. It is not perfect but the I believe God will help.

Posted on October 16, 2011 at 7:12pmHe thinks MLK would want us to think “Government is no distant object but rather an expression of our common commitment to one another”. Really? I don’t know about that, but Obama certainly thinks government should not be distant but in our face in every possibly way. Government is an expression of our commitment to one another? That is just scary beyond belief!! I want the US government to be as distant as the sun!!

Posted on October 16, 2011 at 7:28pmIt is morally wrong to speak for another person (especially if that person is deceased and cannot refute what is being said). How can Obama or any other Dem know how MLK would have responded? Why are they putting words in the mouth of MLK?
There have been many social and political changes in the years since he died that would likely have altered MLK’s view on many subjects. It is naive to think otherwise. It is presumptive of Obama to use MLK to further his political agenda. I’m sure his next ploy will be to invoke God or Allah, depending upon which crowd he is speaking to.

Posted on October 17, 2011 at 12:29pmLillymckim has hit the nail on the head with the comparison of this with the 1989 riots in Venezuela. As someone who watched Hugo Chavez’ brand of change develop during the last decade, I will tell you that this is exactly correct.
I have ZERO doubt that Barry Obama admires Chavez and all that he has been able to accomplish in a relatively short amount of time. Certain comments made by Obama are very indicative of this. And every tactic comes right out of the Marxist playbook. There are tons of parallels between Venezuela in 2001 and the USA in 2011. Unfortunately for him, we have that pesky constitution to contend with – though he’d figure out how to bypass that old thing if given another 4 years.
That Chavez makes critical comments about Obama is mere dinner theater. Mark my words, these two are brothers in arms and exchange “holiday” gifts every December. Probably better ones than Queen Elizabeth got too!!

Her Uncle, not her father.
Elveda not only worked closely with her Uncle, but participated in his vision. I hold certain prejudices toward what I think would be a better way, but just as Dr. King, MY view, as was Dr Kings view willingly shackled to the Law afforded by the Constitution.
Even Castro says that Socialism doesn’t work. The Soviet Union collapsed under the absurdity of the socialist state. Europe is on fire because of the absolute failures of socialism. Democracy can never succeed because it fails to address the equal rights of others, and it was in that vein of philosophy that Dr King bowed to the genius of the US Constitution over personally held prejudices.

Posted on October 16, 2011 at 9:40pm@10th: Her uncle, my mistake. You’re still ignoring my main point, which is that she doesn‘t speak for him and her words don’t trump is own. This was said in response to you claiming the Elveda wouldn‘t endorse Chet’s claim that MLK would support a democratic socialist state. You invoked her as some sort of authority, which is flawed because we have his words to refer to. There’s no logical reason to assume her version of MLK should take precedence over his own.
The rest of your statement is shifting the argument. We can debate the merits of socialism any time. Right now we are discussing Obama’s initial claim, as well as Chet’s and mine versus yours. I will say this; however, let’s not confuse socialism with communism. Cuba and the USSR were communist entities, not democratic socialist entities. It’s debatable if socialism is THE cause for the problems in Europe, and lastly, for any example of a socialist country melting down, I can throw up an example of one doing well for itself, so let’s avoid the tit-for-tat. I feel sorry for the Useful Idiots you have Pied Pipered into this Nightmare World that you so unwisely seek. Posted on October 16, 2011 at 8:27pmMlk would not be a progressive. These black leaders like Obama and Sharpton are a disgrace to MLK’s Dream and are abusing the black community by enslaving them rather than encouraging them to succeed. That is what MLK wanted for his people, not to be chained to government intitlements but to succeed and have equal opportunity on their own merits.Cain is the man that MLK would be proud of not Obama or Sharpton, Van Jones, or the Black Panthers. It upsets me to see the progressives spin MLK’s legacy to further their agenda. MLK was a beautiful man of peace that every race respected and shared in his dream .

Posted on October 16, 2011 at 8:27pm@13: no, he stood for human dignity and that was manifest in variagated ways, namely, calls against American imperialism, calls for equality of the races (but supporting government intervention to bring about that equality), and calls for democratic socialism. The man didn’t paint “individuality the way you guys do. He saw the need for the social aspect of the human condition.

Posted on October 16, 2011 at 8:59pm@13th: it means leveling the playing field so everyone has a fair chance according to their natural abilities. A child born in poverty to a single parent is not on equal footing with a child born comfortably into the upper-middle class. Dignity means instituting social programs, payed for by taxes, that would allow that child born in poverty to have a fair chance at the opportunities the child born comfortably into the upper-middle class would have.

Your Social Justice is just another excuse to be a 47%. , goldbrick, Taker. Anti-Dignity
Report Post »MAProg
Posted on October 16, 2011 at 9:45pm@13th: “Having a family, having a job, helping your fellow man,” sure, dignity means those things but it also means those things that I have stated above. As for what defines “theft,” I’m sure we could debate that, as well as the role of the federal government, but those are tangential. As for your jab at me, rest assured, I’m part of the 53% that pays federal income taxes. I also pay property taxes, sales taxes, payroll taxes, gas taxes, etc. that the 47% also pay. My supporting socialist policies doesn’t necessitate that I am among the 47%. It’s just a personal jab you are hoping to make, but it falls short.

It’s part of his conspiracy, along with his co-conspirators Steven Lerner (SEIU), George Soros, and other socialists involved to “fundamentally change America” and to “redistribute wealth”.
Those are not my words, but Obama’s. So before all you liberals get all pissed off.. remember, Obama said it.
This illegal president must go. He’s a disgrace to our Founding Fathers and our Constitution.
What do you people think “fundamentally change” America means? According to Oxford Dictionary, fundamental (adjective) also means “constitutional”, “foundational”, “basic principles”.
Obama could have easily said, “I am going to change the Constitution foundations of this country,“ and it has the same meaning as ”fundamentally change.”
Obama is an enemy to the United States and to our Constitution.

One could also see his moves as that of a desperate politician grasping at straws trying to save his failed presidency. Either way it marks him as a man without vision, without honor and not deserving to be president.

Posted on October 16, 2011 at 7:04pmTechnically, you are correct, but fundamentally, you are incorrect. Let me explain.
Quote: Marcus Epstein writes:
“In another article about Martin Luther King, Roger Clegg of National Review applauds King for speaking out against the “oppression of communism!” To gain the support of many liberal whites, in the early years, King did make a few mild denunciations of communism. He also claimed in a 1965 Playboy that there “are as many Communists in this freedom movement as there are Eskimos in Florida.” This was a bald-faced lie. Though King was never a Communist and was always critical of the Soviet Union, he had knowingly surrounded himself with Communists. His closest advisor Stanley Levison was a Communist, as was his assistant Jack O’Dell. Robert and later John F. Kennedy repeatedly warned him to stop associating himself with such subversives, but he never did. He frequently spoke before Communist front groups such as the National Lawyers Guild and Lawyers for Democratic Action. King even attended seminars at The Highlander Folk School, another Communist front, which taught Communist tactics, which he later employed.”
Not enough room to post all sources, but you can research this if you like, it is correct.

In those days, if you were openly communist you were toast. MLK led a double life. Alveda King is always emphasizing her uncle’s Christian character, but we all know MLK was an adulterer. Clearly, his views were more in tune with (black) liberation theology than Christianity, and he may very well have been a closet commie.

Posted on October 16, 2011 at 6:37pmMr Obama shows just how perverted the message of the Progressives is; the protesters want chaos, want blood, and want a revolution for the implementation of communist/socialist progressivism. MLK was a man of peace, who sought freedom and equality for everyone.
Report Post »MAProg
Posted on October 16, 2011 at 7:42pmThe protesters want blood? You mean the ones that are getting beaten by the cops? So they want their own blood? In reality, the movement has largely been peaceful, hardly resembling this blood soaked revolution you keep speaking of. Sure, the word ‘revolution’ has been bandied about, but I’ve seen that same word used by Tea Partiers, Ron Paul supports, and the like. Next, let‘s recoginize that communism and socialism aren’t the same thing. You guys equivicate those two terms all the time. You can be in favor of regulated capitolism whithout being a Stalinist. Lastly, let’s not confuse who MLK was. He was not some Teddy Bear that history painted him as being. I was an outspoken warrior for the cause of human dignity. He spoke against Vietman, referring to it as imperialistic and states that America committedmore war crimes than any nation on earth. He advocated democratic socialism over an unbridled free market.

Posted on October 16, 2011 at 8:19pm@Barber: is that supposed to be a response to me? Holy red herring! First two sentences are just shots at progressives, and the last one is pretty false on the face of it. The media didn‘t report Obama’s policies? Really, because I remember the lead up tp the primaries and general election pretty well, and I recall Obama saying a lot of things he wanted to get done. In fact, many of those things are further to the left than what actually happened (i.e. the current health care bill versus a government option or single payer). The only surprises I got from Obama were how much be sold out his base to appease the Republicans.

It angers me to see how the progressives have twisted his words and his dream to advance their agenda. Does anyone think that the black leaders will be satisfied in the end? Do you think they want to be tied down to a socialist Nation, without power? Is their greed for themselves rather than their race all that matters? MLK would be horrified at such an outcome. What advantage over the white population will they have then, what is the purpose if not to help their people? Where will the real power lie and who will be satisfied to sit on the sidelines? There are so many groups pushing for power to be on top and to be number one, yet there is only room for one. Am I correct in my thinking, or do you think all will be compfortable to share the victory, if they succeed?

Posted on October 17, 2011 at 3:17amYes, MAPROG, the media really didn‘t do a thorough job reporting on Obama’s policies during the 2008 election. They ignored or eagerly sought to excuse questionable events and associations from his past (Ayers, Wright, Alinsky, MoveOn, …) Republican candidates have already been getting pretty thorough proctology exams from the media (and that’s ultimately a good thing), but friend Obama has been treated to sycophantic adulation by most of the main stream media, with changes noted only recently as his popularity has sunk in the polls.
