Obama Mocks GOP Opponents Over Energy Positions: Members of the Flat Earth Society | Rutherford B. Hayes

President Barack Obama on Thursday derided his GOP challengers, calling them members of the “flat earth society” for their positions on energy.

“Lately, we have heard a lot of professional politicians, a lot of the folks who were, you know, running for a certain office, who shall go unnamed, they’ve been talking down new sources of energy,” Obama told a crowd during a speech in Maryland. “They dismiss wind power. They dismiss solar power. They make jokes about biofuels. They were against raising fuel standards. I guess they like gas guzzlers. They think that’s good for our future. We’re trying to move towards the future, they want to be stuck in the past!”

While not identifying any of the GOP contenders by name, Obama continued: “We’ve heard this kind of thinking before. Let me tell you something, if some of these folks were around when Columbus set sail, they must have been founding members of the flat earth society. They would not have believed that the world was round.”

Many of the Republican presidential candidates have slammed Obama in the face of soaring gas prices, including Newt Gingrich, who has vowed if elected gas would be lowered to $2.50 a gallon.

Continuing to mock the Republicans, Obama suggested they would have agreed with those who said television wouldn’t last or that the automobile was “only a fad.”

“One of my predecessors, President Rutherford B. Hayes, reportedly said about the telephone, ‘It’s a great invention but who would ever want to use one?’” he said. “That’s why he’s not on Mt. Rushmore!”

Additionally, at another point during the speech, one person in the audience appeared to faint.

“I think somebody may have fainted,” Obama said. “Remember next time, if you’re going to stand for a long time, you’ve gotta eat!”

As The Hill pointed out, it‘s the second time an audience member has fainted during one of the president’s speeches in two weeks: A spectator passed out last Wednesday while Obama was speaking at a truck manufacturing plant in North Carolina.

Update: Nan Card, curator of manuscripts at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Ohio told Talking Points Memo Obama’s reference to the 19th president was not entirely fair or accurate:

“He really was the opposite,” she said. “He had the first telephone in the White House. He also had the first typewriter in the White House. Thomas Edison came to the White House as well and displayed the phonograph. Photographing people who came to the White House and visited at dinners and receptions was also very important to him.”

While often cited, Card said Obama’s cited quote had never been confirmed by contemporary sources and is likely apocryphal. A contemporary newspaper account of his first experience with telephone in 1877 from the Providence Journal records a smiling Hayes repeatedly responding to the voice on the other line with the phrase, “That is wonderful.”

Hayes, Card said, was “pretty technology-oriented for the time” and “between the telephone, the telegraph, the phonograph and photography, I think he was pretty much on the cutting edge.”

I used to work in the energy field and I can tell you….Wind and Solar energy does not produce anywhere near the level of energy Obama is claiming. It produces very little!!!!!! And what happens when the wind does not blow….oh that‘s right they turbines don’t turn. There was a joke that went around whenever someone called and asked what the technicians where doing at the windfarms…..the answer was “Watching the wind turbines NOT turn”

As for the biofuels….a lot of times it takes more energy (and gas) to create them then it does to use traditional fuels.

How about we let free market decide what is an effective energy source. If the government has to inject billions of dollars and force regulation in an attempt to make it work then it probably is not a good idea or at least has not matured to the point of effectiveness yet.

When reporters tell about the number of houses that a wind farm or solar panel field will serve, they don’t count the cost of distribution. About a third of all energy developed is lost to resistance and losses in transforming it up and down. If the solar cells have to convert from DC to AC another third of the energy produced can be consumed in just putting it back on the grid. If you reverse engineer the numbers, it is not uncommon that the per house consumption is ideal rather than average. Al Gore managed to lower his electric bill about half with modifications but he is still using about ten times the average. This is just in one of his four houses.

Every time in the last year that I’ve commented on the wind turbines on a blog, complaining about the bird kills and that they aren’t all that they are presented to be with regard to “new, green energy” my comments have most often disappeared, and I’ve even been banned from one major news site. I do not use curse words or submit unresearched facts while presenting my personal opinions. Now, when I throw in there the solar energy debacles of Solyndra and others, I really get “moderated” off. And, I don’t even want to discuss the biofuels and what they are doing to damage and/or destroy the engines of all of my vehicles and machines that run on them.

Gee it would be great if this actually worked well. Unfortunately, concentrating diffuse energy into a useful product is expensive, unreliable and difficult to do on the scale we need.

PV processes use photonic energy in sunlight (not heat) to “lift” electrons and create electricity. The thermodynamic limitations of this approach mean that many of the electrons fall back into the hole from whence they were lifted. This makes the panels very inefficient. Theoretically, something called the Landsberg Efficiency stipulates that under perfect conditions and with perfect materials, semiconductors could convert 95% of the sun’s power into electricity. This is the academic justification for the investments into PV solar power.

The catch is, in the real world, the materials needed to reach such efficiencies are rare and expensive. The other more important catch is that the main impediment to PV efficiency is… heat. Yes, that’s right. As PV solar cells are exposed to ambient temperatures above room temperature, their efficiency plummets.

What they really want is for us to abort all our babies!! This from Liberty Council:

It’s now official. Contained in just-released Health and Human Services guidelines is yet another mandate that requires an “abortion premium” for the establishment of state health care exchanges.

According to our friends at LifeNews…

“To comply with the accounting requirement, insurance plans will collect a $1 abortion surcharge from each premium payer… The enrollee will make two payments, $1 per month for abortion and another payment for the rest of the services covered. (NOTICE HOW THEY DON’T SAY WHAT OR HOW MUCH!)

As described in the rule, the surcharge can only be disclosed to the enrollee at the time of enrollment. Furthermore, insurance plans may only advertise the total cost of the premiums without disclosing that enrollees will be charged a $1 per month fee to directly subsidize abortions.”

Here’s the bottom line: All Americans were lied to by our President, who promised that ObamaCare would not enhance abortion services, nor would taxpayer money be used to fund these murderous procedures!

And you will certainly remember the President’s oh-so-sincere promise that “If you like your healthcare plan, you can keep it.”
It turns out that, too, was a convenient “misrepresentation.”
Most won’t be able to even keep their health coverage!

Almost all solar cells made, and almost all turbines made, never produce enough energy to offset the energy required to build them, so endup being negative green. If the liberals were serious about green, the first most wasteful thing in the US is long haul trucking, they would get them off the road and onto rails/barges, and cut the fuel used for transportation by 1/3 within 5 years. If they were serious about green, they would stop selling our oil they say has to much sulfer, and our coal to China that use both in ways where nearly 9x the pollution and green house gases go into the air as would if used in modern US generators/automobiles.

Well here we have such a situation.
You see their is one little problem for you green minded fossil fuel haters that you forgot to figure into your wish list!
We can’t build enough power plants or cars or trucks or trains or military equipment or factories or heavy equipment like bulldozers and loaders and tractors to replace gas & diesel fast enough!! Have I maid my point yet? Do any of you understand? It will take generations to change this country into renewable energy.
We should use your own oil in the interim instead of buying someone else’s oil.
Now you may, like me wonder why he (OB) would want to keep us from becoming independent of middle east oil?
Why would we still buy 80% of our oil from the people that flew plains into the Trade Center killing innocent people when we have that much and more here at home if he would let us get it idiot!?
If we were self sufficient & using our own resources then we could start replacing (in an orderly way) our factories and homes and cars etc: with green energy so as to start lowering our oil consumption. Its a no brain’r to me!
But instead this administration wants us to stay dependent on oil that is from people that want to wage war on us and war cost money! Why? Because NObama is on their side! Wake up!

Does anyone recognize the Saul Alinsky tactics here? I know the MSM and the left discount all that talk about Obama being a student of Alinsky teachings – they ridiculed everyone who suggested Obama’s associations with Bill Ayers and even now with Professor Derrick Bell. Just do a search on Alinsky teachings and it is blaringly obvious the tactics he uses! Freeze and isolate your opponent – ridicule them and discount what they say as ignorant and uninformed. Alinsky teaches that the ends justify the means. He teaches to move slow, be ready and willing to change tactics, lie and present yourself in whatever light necessary to win. You must always act as though you are the most intilectual and most enlighted. They ridicule conservatives as ignorant, people who questioned his birth certificate as ‘birthers’. Remember how they presented Sarah Palin? Now all the GOP contenders for President are ‘Flat Earthers’. I hope and pray everyone can begin to read about these tactics and wake up! It shuts his opposition down and silences those who would rise up for the truth. I suppose he will say all the GOP Presidential contenders are racist for daring to run against him.

Every 2yrs elect a third of each house every 6 a third of each house and the

let the state legislature choose senators. We got bambozled with that crap
about let the people choose. Our senators don’t really represent us, they represent
their doners. I lived (past tense) in CT, and one of our senators received 85%

Last I thought Congress was the combined House and Senate. So unlike how you think he is only half wrong. Also if going on that argument if a senator or a president gets voted in five times the people must want them right? Quite often in politics it‘s not who you are but who’s funding your campaign. Or in Cain’s case, who lies about you. You do notice that since he dropped out of the race the “accusers” disappeared, and also they never pressed charges or even sued for recompense. These situations are why EVERY elected official needs maybe 4 at the most term limits. Look at Harry Reed, Barney Frank(who is only retiring), Nancy Pelosi, and some other well known politicians. And you see the case in point.

@Zenzazin: I wonder how much money ExxonMobil is getting from the government for this “investment”? I don‘t think that anyone is saying that the search for alternative fuels shouldn’t happen, but we can’t change our energy sources overnight…..PERIOD!!!! And, if ExxonMobil isn’t getting government funding or loans, I will admit that they are smart enough to realize the face they need to put forward, especially if Obama sits in the WH another 4 years. They also are finding a way to battle the lingering bad reputation and continuing hatred for them after the Exxon Valdez accident. And, our oil, coal, & gas reserves will sustain us for quite a very long time into the future, so there’s time to work on alternative energy sources to phase in to assist them, and maybe even replace them in the future. We also don‘t need a POTUS and his administration playing us and telling us these higher prices are what we’re getting, without relief, to force us to think about and embrace “green” energy.

The President has his energy priorities flipped. He is expending way too much government money on new energy technologies and poorly run companies, and is erecting obstacles to developing our abundant fossil fuel resources. The best thing he could do is to wake up and realize that fossil fuels will be the future of energy for years to come, and we have the resources right here in North America to be a world leader in that arena. Move forward with alternative energy sources like solar, wind, biofuels, etc., but not with huge government grants. Do it with tax incentives for private companies who are truly committed to their particular industry. Allow private enterprise to show us the way toward a cleaner energy future, Mr. President. Don‘t ram it down the tax payer’s throats when you are sitting on such an abundance of energy resources that we KNOW will work. And for the love of God stop treating those of us who have already connected the dots like idiots.

Some of the resources were discovered fairly recently. For example, estimates for reserves beneath North Dakota were recently adjusted upward dramatically from earlier estimates. Advances in technology in recent years have aided both exploration and extraction techniques. It’s there all right. We just have to decide if we want to go get it.

I don’t mind being stuck in the past 200+ years with the kind of freedom that will fight slavery. That is, not the kind that will ‘put’ us all there.

Lift all drilling restrictions, both offshore and on, and approve the keystone pipeline and you will see crude drop $50 bbl !!!! It’s that simple!!!!

The reserves come from the Federal reserve, they can always print more oil. Come on, use your head.

remember when GOP was all giddy during the gulf oil spill because they saw an opportunity to blame Obama? gas prices are a lot more complicated than more drilling, moron.

Seems like Obama wants his bust on Mt. Rushmore. Sorry to say, it would have to be a plateau for his flat head and be wide enough for his ears. Try Kenya!!!

Rather ironic as Obama loves to “ rush” more than any previous president ! He loves to create a crisis so he can then create an executive order and avoid congressional over-sight ! These crafty Far Left Democrats know how to play all of the legal angles. That’s what got them where they are today. And got America into the mess we are now facing under them.

And, you, sir, have a flat head!

We do NOT dismiss alternative forms of energy. We just don’t worship them as the be-all, end-all. Our economy is tied to fossil fuels for the foreseeable future. Your insistence that we go to other forms of energy is destroying the economy. These kinds of large scale changes are done slowly as technology develops. Radical, non-market driven, changes do NOT fix problems; they make new ones.

so you would rather wait until the oil has run out, or those countries who control most of the world’s supply refuse to sell it to us before we start exploring other options? Would you rather continue to line the pockets of terrorist sympathizers rather than becoming more self-sufficient? The US only has enough oil for about 100 years, which really isn’t a lot, especially at the rate that we as a country consume it. Please explain how maintaining things exactly the way they are is going to be helpful for anyone other than oil companies gouging us with their prices (and yet still making more profits than the previous year… how come no one questions THAT?)

“Many of the Republican presidential candidates have slammed Obama in the face of soaring gas prices, including Newt Gingrich, who has vowed that in his administration, gas would be lowered to $2.50 a gallon.”

And Bachmann promised $2.00 a gallon. It‘s easy to make such promises when you have no chance of winning and no plan of diminishing the government’s expenditures.

Yet Barry SAID that Energy Prices would necessarily Skyrocket. And Barry has issued NO NEW Drilling Leases. ALL the current large supply of oil was ok’ed by GWB. And didn’t BARRY say that that BLACK DEMON COAL is evil, and he would make it impossible thru regulation that that BLACK DEVIL COAL would be harder to mine.

Yeah, I’m pretty ticked at Obama for drumming up opposition to the Alaska pipeline; however, his administration has approved some leases off the coast of Alaska. My issue is that we should be exploiting our resources everywhere, not just off our NW coast.

And no, Obama has never said “black devil coal” nor “black demon goal” are evil. At least, I can find no quotes with that. Perhaps you can cite that wording?
