Obama: ‘Nothing Can Be Off-Limits’ in Budget

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama said Saturday that “nothing can be off-limits” in the budget debate — even though Republicans have said tax increases are. The president said every tax break and federal program must come under scrutiny.
With an Aug. 2 deadline looming to raise the government borrowing limit, the president used his weekly radio and Internet address to call on Congress to make a deal.
He also renewed his call for Congress to eliminate some tax breaks for the well-off as part of any agreement. Republicans want deep spending cuts without any tax increases while Obama and Democrats call for what they term a “balanced” approach. That means one that also includes new revenue in the form of higher taxes for some, though Democrats steer clear of using phrases like “tax increases” or “higher taxes.”
“Now, it would be nice if we could keep every tax break, but we can’t afford them,” Obama said. “Because if we choose to keep those tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, or for hedge fund managers and corporate jet owners, or for oil and gas companies pulling in huge profits without our help — then we’ll have to make even deeper cuts somewhere else.”
“Nothing can be off-limits, including spending in the tax code, particularly the loopholes that benefit very few individuals and corporations,” the president said.
Lawmakers and the administration are seeking deficit cuts in the range of $2.4 trillion over the coming decade to balance a similar increase in the debt limit — one that’s large enough to keep the government afloat past the November 2012 election. Currently the debt limit is $14.3 trillion, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says it must be raised by Aug. 2 to avoid defaulting on the government‘s financial obligations for the first time in the nation’s history.
With both sides dug into their positions, it’s not clear how compromise will be reached, though the Senate canceled its plans to take a July Fourth recess next week in order to stay in Washington and work on the problem.
Obama expressed confidence a deal could be made and instead of singling out Republicans as the barriers to agreement, he directed his message to Democrats and Republicans alike.
“We’ve got to cut the deficit, but we can do that while making investments in education, research and technology that actually create jobs,” the president said. “We can live within our means while still investing in our future. That’s what we have to do. And I’m confident that the Democrats and Republicans in Congress can find a way to give some ground, make some hard choices, and put their shoulders to wheel to get this done.”
Republicans used their weekly address to criticize Obama on the economy and renew their opposition to tax increases.
“The president and Democrats in Congress must recognize that their game plan is not working. It’s time to acknowledge that more government and higher taxes is not the answer to our problem,” said Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind. “It’s time for bold action and a new plan to address our current crisis.”
Coats said that it was time for the government to “stop spending money we don’t have and to enact policies that will grow our economy and get Americans back to work.”

For those of you who think he deserves the time off with his family, fine but he should make certain it’s at his own expense and close to home. Africa, Spain, Europe, huh? We work hard for all we have, but we havent’ been able to afford one vacation, much less 20 or more, in the past two years.

If they sell them off in large chunks, they can actually deflate our currency to a big fat peso, spike our lending interest rates, and send us spiraling into the deepest deperssion we have had in history. The Republicans are right on this one. We can’t afford to keep growing the government and instating / repealing tax law. The former creates even greater future debt and the latter lives the stock market jittery with deflated movement. Obama doesn’t seem to have ANY GRASP of fiscal responsibility whatsoever. I am neither Dem or Repub, but by golly, this is one of those times we should all be picking up the phone & sending e-mails of support for every Republican holding their ground. Well, Mitch Daniels got there ahead of you. He sold the Indiana Turnpike to an Australian outfit which will reap all the tolls but the citizens of that state will still have pick up the pieces if there is a Torrnado.
The sale is for 99 years
1. The terms make sure that – until 2061 (50 years from now) – Indiana my not build any roads or railroads which might compete with the (now Australian) turnpike.
2. In case of flooding the Indiana residents (taxes) will have to make up the difference between the expected tolls and the loss of traffic to that the new owner does NOT lose income.
3. So the infrastructure system in Indiana is now FROZEN for fifty years.

Privatizing prisons also puts a heavier burden on state taxes than do state run prisons, with the incentive for the private owner to keep EVER bed full. Why? Because they will be paid per-capita, out of YOUR $$$$$

If you can‘t pay all your bills maybe it’s time to cut back on the Starbucks, and cable T.V. and focus on food, heating and a home.

The interest on the debt is 7% of gdp while the income from taxes is 70%, more than enough to pay the interest on our debt.

What? Really? Bovine Scatology! I hope your post was intended as sarcasm. He explained everything in terms of taxes. He never once mentioned drawing down levels of spending and not in any entitlement program. He may say “nothing can be off-limits,” but that’s not what he means. We need to return to 2008 level of spending and start cutting from there. Quit giving out fish and teach people how to fish or at least how to stand on one’s own two feet.

Bush’s spending along with tax cuts ran up $3 trillion in deficits. Is this some difficult word problem those in congress can’t figure out. Get rid of corporate loopholes, cut defense, cut discretionary spending and raise the top income tax rate and earmark the additional revenue for reduction of the debt. Social Security and Medicare should be handled differently as they should have been maintained as annuities and funded adequately. We spend twice as much per capita on health care than the next highest country. Along with covering the care for the 40% of small businesses and individuals who don’t have health insurance it is higher costs that is are threatening Medicare, not the funding side. Privatizing Social Security will be the first step to eliminating any corporate contribution.

I have reviewed each of your PGA’s and I have determined that you A and B students are too privileged. We must spread the wealth-points of your grades, besides, you can afford it. From now on I’m going to distribute individual grade points to the needy. I will subtract the highest students’ grades and add them to D students grades so they may have an improved GPA. I will follow suite going from the highest GPA’s downward, and adding those newly found points to the lowest GPA‘s going up from there. I will attempt to make all D students into C or higher, depending upon the total amount of points I can squeeze out of you. I want you exceptional students to know that you will be doing a good thing in helping your fellow less privileged students. It is for the good of the class that I do this.
