Obama Officially Ends Ban on Gays Serving in the Military

Obama Officially Ends Ban on Gays Serving in the MilitaryWASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — President Barack Obama on Friday formally signed off on ending the ban on gays serving openly in the military, doing away with a policy that’s been controversial from the day it was enacted and making good on his 2008 campaign promise to the gay community.

The president joined Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Adm. Mike Mullen, the joint chiefs of staff chairman, in signing a notice and sending it to Congress certifying that military readiness would not be hurt by repealing the 17-year-old “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

That means that 60 days from now the ban will be lifted.

“As commander in chief, I have always been confident that our dedicated men and women in uniform would transition to a new policy in an orderly manner that preserves unit cohesion, recruitment, retention and military effectiveness,” Obama said in a statement.

“Today’s action follows extensive training of our military personnel and certification by Secretary Panetta and Admiral Mullen that our military is ready for repeal. As of September 20th, service members will no longer be forced to hide who they are in order to serve our country.”

Friday’s move was expected under the repeal law Congress passed in December. Before “don’t ask, don’t tell,” the military did not allow gays to serve. But in 1993 Clinton said gays would be discharged only if their sexual orientation became known.

Repeal has drawn strong opposition from some in Congress, and there was initial reluctance from military leaders who worried it could cause a backlash and erode troop cohesion on the battlefield.

But two weeks ago, the chiefs of the military services told Panetta that ending the ban would not affect military readiness.

Advocacy groups that fought for the change called the decision Friday long-overdue, while opponents said it’s a political payoff to left-leaning gay and lesbian activists.

“The president’s certification of repeal is a monumental step, not just for those forced to lie in order to serve, but for all Americans who believe in fairness and equality,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese.

Elaine Donnelly, who heads the Center for Military Readiness, which has lobbied against repeal, said it will “undermine morale and readiness in the all-volunteer force.”

The Pentagon is expected to spend the next 60 days preparing the troops for the change, and ironing out legal and technical details, including how it will affect housing, military transfers and other health and social benefits.

In most cases, the guidelines require that gays and lesbians be treated like any other member of the military. There will be differences, however. Same sex partners will not get the same housing and other benefits as married couples. Instead, they are more likely to be treated like unmarried couples.

Once the repeal is final, service members can no longer be discharged for openly acknowledging they are gay. That’s the key change. And those who have been discharged previously based solely on the gay ban may apply to re-enter the force.

Service members may also designate their same-sex partners as beneficiaries for insurance and other benefits – something they may have avoided earlier for fear it would cause their dismissal.

One of the thornier issues is gay marriage.

An initial move by the Navy earlier this year to train chaplains about same-sex civil unions in states where they are legal was shelved after more than five dozen Congress members objected.

The training, lawmakers told Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, violated the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act by appearing to recognize and support same-sex marriages.

I see the return of the draft in the near future. I will tell you this. I was in the Reserves and served my country well during the first Gulf War 20 years ago. I only suspected that homosexuals (only years later found out) were in our unit and they did their job, but, I do not want to know it and have it spieled in my face that these folk were gay. Keep your sexual desires in your pants and do your job I say. Making it so that they can outwordly show their affections for same sex soldiers is not going to fly. Fraternization accusations are going to be a hassle for the JAG too and, instead of fighting to protect the homeland, folk will be fighting in the courts. Sad, sad, sad. :)

I have no problem with gay people. I do have a problem with a heavy lisp, outward tells and PDAs. I dont do that and neither should they.

I will bet within a year we see a gay soldier dead because of open hhomosexuality. And I will bet that if he is captured by AlQueda he will revert back to dont ask dont tell real quickly….

Exactly! This is a slippery slope. I saw opportunists of opposite sexes have others reprimanded for sexual harassment when I was in the service. Theoretically it will be very easy for some self proclaimed homosexual to commit sexual harassment of the same sex by military standards. If I were openly gay and in the military I’d want private showers as to not be accused of any improprieties. Before you had the expectation of heterosexuals in the communal showers. This turns it on it’s head. How can letting an openly homosexual woman shower in the shower room with a heterosexual woman differ than letting a heterosexual man in there with the heterosexual woman? I‘m a male and a homosexual male can see me naked in the shower why can’t I go into the females shower to see ladies?

FYI: Really don‘t care about who is or isn’t gay, I just want to point out there are many dangers into trying to make this puzzle piece fit in the military and the dangers involved for the party who thought they finally won the battle.

I understand that this may blow up in the faces of the gay activists. You see, before the ban was lifted the military couldn‘t ask and service member couldn’t tell. Now, at least in the Marine Corps, they WILL be asked and be required to tell. You see there are many, many points in the U.S. Marine recruitment and training process were you can be kicked out. A simple “not suited for military life”, or “unable to adapt to military service” or the D.I. just decides he doesn’t want you in HIS Corps will get you put out. Oh, but of course the gay recruit could always get a lawyer and sue the Marine Corps, but being on “legal hold” in the Corps is a fate worse than prison. You see once you sign that contract, it is up to the Corps whether you get out or not! Eighteen hours a day of the worst, nastiest, dirtiest, hottest (or coldest), physical labor you can think of until your “legal problems” are solved. And it ain’t like it is in the real world girls, you don’t go anywhere or do anything unless it is authorized by higher authority! You would likely be confined to base when you are not working and there isn’t a thing you or any lawyer can do about it!!!! Semper Coitus! hahahahahahahahaha

Forget it. It’s done. Get over it. The Israeli military has allowed gays to serve openly for years (or decades, not sure). Nobody cares, it’s not an issue, and no one can accuse the Israel’s of having a weak or compromised military. The Israeli’s have a seriously bad a– military force and they don‘t give a dang if you’re gay, as long as you’re serious a bad a– too.

We’ve been through this with blacks and women. People earn respect based on their performance and once they do, they get the respect they deserve. The world’s changing, get over it. The only thing that matters is how a soldier performs. If someone, anyone is worried about having a gay person around, they aren’t too secure about their own sexual preferences. Seriously, why does anybody give a dang if some person is gay?

Really? I have served along side the Israeli Military and except for a small group of highly trained elite commandos and special forces (all men, maybe hetro, maybe ****) the majority of their military reminds you of a bunch of petulant collage kids that are just doing their time in the service so they can go back to college. No disipline, a severe lack of motivation and they must be supervised to insure they correctly perform the smallest assigned task. What was your first hand experience like?

JZS, in case you weren’t aware of this, each and every citizen of Israel who is physically able to, both men and women, are conscripted into the military for a term before attending college. It’s that way in a lot of European countries as well, although most don’t allow women.

The United States didn’t become great by copying the rest of the world. The United States became great by doing the exact opposite of the rest of the world. We don’t give a damn what the rest of the world does or how it does it. We have our own way of doing things, thank you very much.

I was wondering how Obama would weaken our military. This is a major way to cause problems at a root level. Just like the MANDATORY Diversity and Sensitivity training. These are structured to empower a minority and intimidate a majority. It’s all a scam. Values and Merit are out the window. Another tool is the EEOC which is a quota system to employ based on color. Commies are clever in using the system.

You say they act like a bunch of petulant college kide (I take it you didn’t go to college). Okay, you have been around them, I have not. I believe the reputation is that they are fierce and deadly. And I believe that’s their history. If you think the Israeli army isn’t that great, well, okay. This idiotic move on the part of our pathetic president does nothing more than open the way for homosexual activists to flant their “in your face” deviant behavior all the more. This puts Bible-believing military chaplains in an untenable position. How can they preach and teach what the Word of God says without facilitating and empowing some outed homosexual’s lawsuit? It puts Bible-believing Christians who serve is a difficult position as well. They are now going to be exposed to the open promotion and agressive sexual behavior of the gay activists who will use this opening to propagate their unnatural cause in yet more societal venues, citing their success with our spineless president and our compliant military leadership. Israel has a draft, age 18 every man and woman is drafted. They all serve for at least 2 years. I believe that bringing back the “draft” was one of the keys issues made here earlier. The removal of DADT may be in preparation to just that. Rahm “Dead Fish” Emmanual said the same thing. Trust me when I tell you, you do not want a draft for our military. Those of you that have served and are serving with me now , know exactly why I say this. Leaving the **** thing aside for a second. A draft would train too many people with no moral compass. We are trained and conditioned to shoot, move and communicate. We are trained how to do drive-by shortings, home invasions/siezures, recruit, make IED’s/VBIEDs. The list goes on. Do you think law enforcement could handle a gang of pipehitters running loose in the city? We already have a gang problem in the Service now.

Technicly, it’s not a rainbow. A proper, primary colors spectrum has seven colors corresponding to the mnemonic “Roy G. Biv”. The Gay Flag, as used since 1979, only has six colors, omitting indigo (the I in Biv) since it’s so similar to violet.

And long before it was a Judeo-Christian symbol, it was a representation of a simple, fundamental, physical phenomenon of sunlight passing through water vapour. rather presumptuous of you to say that one group‘s claim on the import of the symbol should trump another’s. I see no reason why you can‘t use it as a symbol of god’s promise while LGBT people use it as a simple of diversity and solidarity.

      Lesbian, you make valid points.

However, symbols are powerful messages, and mean many things to many different people!

The swastika for example can be a very evil thing, or a very positive thing! But to someone who doesn’t like Nazis, may take offense from a Swastika seen in another culture (Navajo, Asian, etc), if they are ignorant of other beliefs! BTW, both the clockwise and counterclockwise Swastikas predate the Nazi use of the symbol.

Your average person, doesn‘t realize a ’missing color’, and see it as a corruption of a symbol. Since they see the alternatve symbol as offensive, they see that offensive to their use of the symbol.

No I’m not comparing Homosexuals to Nazis! Nazis didn’t like Homosexuals. They do not have anything in common. But the point is, you’ll never convince someone to accept other symbols, especially if they already have a passionate view of the symbol in the first place.

The only thing changing is the don’t-ask-don’t tell policy, meaning if a soldier wants to tell everyone he’s gay, he can. Something tells me most gay soldiers won’t want to do that. This is a sad day for military readiness. Mark it down as the point at which it began to became impossible for men of good conscience to serve God, Country and Corps (or other service) without losing their integrity. Religiously faithful Christian families have long provided a large portion of the volunteers who serve in our Armed Forces. Mark this also as the day when those religiously faithful Christian families will have to consider telling their sons and daughters that they can no longer recommend that they volunteer to serve in the Armed Forces if it means exposing themselves to the homosexual agenda designed to undermine our country. This is a victory for the Socialist Culture of Death Elitists, and our nation’s military leaders have surrendered.

The rape stories will come next. I won’t be long. The discrimination against heterosexuals will be next.

Yes, you don’t see reported the crimes going on re homosexuals …just like they protect Muslims & don’t report the rapes, crimes they commit here in our cities – like Dearborn, MI.
Both the gays and the Muslims are known for gathering into gangs and attacking innocent people – happened here in Texas not long ago. And yes, the more it’s accepted, the more they will get more violent, etc. We’ll just have to learn the hard way……..

Now we can move forward to doing the real job of the military, defending this country from its enemies, not being a Theocratic social experiment.

No. I like heterosexuals. Some of my best friends are heterosexuals. I like heterosexuals serving openly in our nation’s military. I like heterosexuals able to marry other heterosexuals in marriage ceremonies, either civilly, or in religious houses of worship that are willing to perform such services.

Can you say the same thing about homosexuals?

If you were in the Military and were captured by AlQueda, would you tell them you were homosexuaal if they asked or would you revert back to dont ask dont tell?

I as a Christian would have no problem telling them I was a Christian and I would die for my faith…Would you die for your choice?

      @DustyLuv:
Be oh so very careful about challenging a person with regard to what they are willing to die for. You have no idea what I am passionate about and am willing to die for. I know that if I am to be executed for being who or what I am, as an Atheist (one of the primary things I would die to defend), it will be a moment of agony followed by oblivion, utter nothingness, insensativity. I have no fear, as religionists do, of “Have I been a proper believer in my god?“ ”Will my god embrace me or have I angered him in ignorance and am bound for eternal torment in Hell?”

No. There is utter clarity in my mind, and there will be right through the torture and torment of haters (who are generally religionists) and through the blade to the neck or the bullet to the head. If I am able, I will stare my torturer/executioner right in the eyes and dare them to think they’ve broken me, even as the life ebbs from my eyes.,

I know a lot of “good Christians” and macho males will claim this is false bravado, but consider this… I grew up in rural Indiana the target of daily torment and torture for who and what I am. I’ve already experienced the humiliation and the dehumanization and the stripping of all pretense of civility. Were I to fall into the hands of Islamofasists (or Christofascists) intent on deleting me for being me, they can do nothing to me, instill no new fears in me, than I’ve already experienced at the hands of classmates.

      Bring it.

your willingness to offer your life in defense of this country should be what is important, not who you’d like to marry. There are many military gentleman I‘ve known over the years who aren’t always the most upstanding human beings behind closed doors, so I don’t think people should rush to judgment on a persons character and honor on their sexuality, so this decision is the first one Obama has made that I can agree with.

      Dear Wrong & Wronger,

I care and so do many others in this country. This IS a big deal. This is another swipe at our nation‘s moral foundation by a sorry excuse of a president who seems committed to our country’s demise.

Why is it that for centuries religions and cultures have held to the notion that homosexuality is aberrant, deviant, and perverted? The answer is that homosexual behavior is inherently evil and tears at the fabric of society. The fact Obama continues to champion the homosexual agenda is proof he is not only unfit to lead this country, he is in fact, dangerous.

      Sincerely,
      Bro Geo

P.S. It matters not how many people climb aboard the homosexual bandwagon, the fact remains it is evil, perverted, and terribly misguided.

For most people, there are no morality standards anymore! Who is standing up for morals?
Haven’t you been paying attention to the last 20 years?
We have now come to the conclusion, as a nation, that it just doesn’t matter anymore.

      Sad isn’t it.
