Obama Officially Signs DADT Repeal

WASHINGTON (AP) — Declaring that members of the military will no longer be asked to lie, President Barack Obama fulfilled a campaign promise Wednesday and signed a landmark law repealing the ban on gay men and women serving openly in the armed services.
“This is a good day,” a beaming Obama said. “This is a very good day.”
The new law ends the 17-year-old “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that forced gays to hide their sexual orientation or face dismissal. Its repeal comes as public opinion on such issues as gay marriage and gay rights in general has grown more tolerant.
“I say to all Americans, gay or straight, who want nothing more than to defend this country in uniform, your country needs you, your country wants you, and we will be honored to welcome you into the ranks of the finest military the world has ever known,” Obama said.
The service chiefs must first complete implementation plans before lifting the old policy – and they must certify to lawmakers that it won’t damage combat readiness, as critics charge. But Obama said: “We are not going to be dragging our feet to get this done.”
The signing ceremony was a breakthrough moment for the nation’s gay community, the military and for Obama himself. The president vowed during his 2008 campaign to repeal the law and faced pressure from liberals who complained he was not acting swiftly enough.
For Obama, it was the second high-profile bill signing ceremony within a week. On Friday, he signed into a law a tax package he negotiated with Republicans that extended Bush-era tax rates for two more years, cut payroll taxes and ensured jobless benefits to the unemployed for another year.
The two events, however, could not have been more different in tone.
The tax deal divided Democrats and forced Obama to accept extensions of tax cuts for the wealthiest, a step he had promised to not take. With Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell at his side during that bill signing, Obama seemed dutiful and subdued.
Wednesday’s signing of the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” had the feel of a political rally. Speaking in the Interior Department’s auditorium, Obama appeared in his element as shouts of “Thank you, Mr. President!” interrupted him.
“I couldn’t be prouder,” Obama said.
Obama hailed the “courage and vision” of Defense Secretary Robert Gates and praised Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen, who advocated changing the law.
“No longer will tens of thousands of Americans in uniform be asked to live a lie, or look over their shoulder in order to serve the country that they love,” Obama said.
Among those in attendance at the ceremony was the son of a World War II veteran who was saved by a gay comrade during the Battle of the Bulge. Also present was Marine Staff Sgt. Eric Alva, the first American wounded in the war in Iraq who has spoken out against the Pentagon policy.
The Pentagon now must begin addressing the practical consequences of the law. Guidelines must be completed that cover a host of questions, from how to educate troops to how sexual orientation should be handled in making barracks assignments.
While officials have avoided timetables, the process will probably take months.
The new law is the second of three expected victories in what’s turned out to be – for Obama – a surprisingly productive lame-duck Congress. Weeks after his self-described “shellacking” in the midterm vote, he’s won lopsided approval of a tax cut compromise, and the Senate is poised to deliver his top foreign policy goal: ratification of a new nuclear arms treaty with Russia.
Born 17 years ago as a compromise between President Bill Clinton and a resistant Pentagon, the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy became for gay rights campaigners a notorious roadblock on the way to full acceptance.
Yet he has also faced rising discontent among gay activists who believed he hadn’t moved forcefully enough. He’s been heckled at campaign appearances over AIDS funding and the failure to end the military service ban.
Obama countered that as commander in chief, he had to ensure the ban’s end is carefully prepared for.
That’s just what the bill from Congress mandates.
“The implementation and certification process will not happen immediately; it will take time,” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz warned in an e-mail that went out right after Saturday’s Senate vote. “Meanwhile, the current law remains in effect. All Air Force members should conduct themselves accordingly.”
Military and administration officials are wrestling with numerous legal questions raised by the end of the ban – knowing that courts are waiting in the wings. They include what to do about pending expulsion proceedings, and when those ousted under the old policy might apply to rejoin the armed forces.

We have allowed citizens to be elected who have no ability to understand the seriousness of such destructive political policies. If we as Americans continue to allow these Godless spineless idiots to gain power through elected office we are sealing our own fate. What’s happening before our eyes right now is in all probability our final warning of what will be an epic struggle for survival of any semblence of what America was and must continue to be if freedom, liberty and Justice and Democracy are to survive!

I can see friendly fire accidents in the future. Let the Gay run point on outings, if they get shot the straight soldiers will not want to do CPR or treat the wounds for fear of getting aids, that is even more problems for the medical field that is already spread to thin.

That gay guy actually made it to the battle field while the rest of you sit comfy in your lounge chairs arm chair quarterbacking the situation.
And finally, everyone gets an HIV test routinely. How do I know if that heterosexual soldier doesn’t have mouth herpes? I know A LOT of soldiers that have plenty of sexually transmitted diseases. Those things are not isolated to homosexuals, no matter what your preacher tells you!

People who are gay are not any more promiscuous about their sexuality, especially if they are soldiers trained by our military, than those who are straight. Regardless of whether you believe it is a choice or a natural state to be gay, I don‘t think it will get in the way of their professionalism any more than sexual thoughts get in the way of straight soldiers’ professionalism.

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 11:48amTo Eaglestar,
I beg to differ. I think this will have a major affect on our Millitary. Gays who wouldn’t join the military in the past may join now. The VA will now become a “Housing Ground” for those with Aides. What was once meant for those who served our Country for Valor and Sacrifice, might not serve the same purpose. The should make a provision for mandatory Aides testing before entering the military. I have not heard talk of that.
Not to mention the many many men on the frontlines that have stated that it will be a distraction to them if they have a gay man serving next to them and covering their back. Not to mention the men on the frontlines will feel a need to protect the new element of gay man on the frontline, this will cause possible miscalculations and life loss decisions. How can they so carelessly disregard the statements of the men on the frontline? I think the men know what they are talking about.

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 5:47pmI think that of the replies I got, OMIGOSH was the one person who tried to make points that were actually “researched”. I think ignorance is largely to blame for most people’s knowledge of homosexuality. I am not a brainwashed liberal. I am young, and I am a thinker, and I have done my own research. I‘ve looked heavily into both sides on this issue because I am a Christian and I think that it’s an issue that deserves a lot of study.
I will now address OMIGOSH’s points because they were so well laid out that they deserve a reply.
I respectfully disagree, OMIGOSH, because of the following points.
-Although many people who have AIDS are homosexuals, the reverse is not true. Most people who are homosexuals do not have AIDS. In fact, for percentage of population, I believe the incidence of AIDS has drastically decreased since the onset of educational efforts by hospitals and caring organizations to help people understand the dangers of unprotected sex. I believe that the percentages are almost equal among populations. This is not to say that people with AIDS don’t have a larger chance of being homosexual than not. However, people who are homosexual do not have a larger chance of having AIDS than not.
-Those who want to serve in the military are already disciplined individuals who are less likely to be promiscuous than those who get all the press and “act gay” in public.
-Finally, the same discomfort and “protective” nature was most likely present when black people, Asian people, Mexican people, and women started serving alongside soldiers. Why? Because when black people started serving, they were seen as not as smart and not as capable, so “protective” nature as well as distrust of ability was present. Asian and Mexican people were genetically shorter and smaller when they started serving, and of course women are shorter and smaller than most men. So this protective nature was present then as well. Therefore, based on past occurrences, I believe this feeling will pass and equality will ensue. Already, officers overwhelmingly are supportive of including gays in the military. The enlisted men are not for the reasons discussed above. But just like other integrations, this will pass.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Have you seen how badly these male soldiers want to have sex with anything with a ****** between their legs?
Now most of you are just spewing your opinions and disguising them as facts for a topic you know nothing of.
Like I’ve mentioned, I would have kept DADT just removed the provision allowing them to kick you out for being homosexual. If you want to serve openly, that’s on you. Sexual orientation should be left in your private life and not be taken to work.

Nobody I work with knows my sexual preferences, because there is a level of discretion and dignity that most people have about their private acts. If you prefer blond babes with ample proportions, should you be in a protected class because you have declared your choice?
The disruptive force in unit cohesion is the open discussion of things that are better left private. Our military was weakened today.”

Posted on December 23, 2010 at 7:27amI don’t think this is funny… As a service member, two homosexual members have already solicited me for sex knowing I’m married with children, and now Barney Frank says it’s discrimination to not allow homosexuals to shower with straights. How will we establish quarters for straights and homosexuals? What next cross-dressers want to serve? Seeing a man in a dress skirt uniform won’t look odd.

Posted on December 23, 2010 at 11:28amAssuming most here believe in conspiracies, let me propose one I haven’t seen yet.
The left for years has known that as long as the military is present and predominantly conservatives who believe in the U.S. Constitution they can’t mount any sort of aggressive takeover similar to those in African nations or South America. However, if the military was more liberal and less inclined to side with the Constitution a takeover is possible. In my opinion, this move is the beginning of the tilting of our military more in line with what Progressive/liberal/fascists believe.
Just a thought…………

Regardless of your opinions concerning the policies of the President, it is never okay to make or imply threats against the President. Even Glenn would tell you that. Its people like you that give conservatives a bad name.
