Obama Pens Op-Ed Promising to Remove ‘Dumb’ & ‘Outdated Regulations’

President Obama wants America to know he is a pro-business president.
In an op-ed in Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal, the president promised to sign an executive order to root out “dumb” and “outdated” regulations that “stifle job creation and make our economy less competitive.”
“This order requires that federal agencies ensure that regulations protect our safety, health and environment while promoting economic growth,” Obama writes. “And it orders a government-wide review of the rules already on the books to remove outdated regulations that stifle job creation and make our economy less competitive. It’s a review that will help bring order to regulations that have become a patchwork of overlapping rules, the result of tinkering by administrations and legislators of both parties and the influence of special interests in Washington over decades.”
Still, he made sure to note that this doesn’t erase the need for new regulations. “Where necessary, we won’t shy away from addressing obvious gaps: new safety rules for infant formula; procedures to stop preventable infections in hospitals; efforts to target chronic violators of workplace safety laws,” he says, and then adds: “But we are also making it our mission to root out regulations that conflict, that are not worth the cost, or that are just plain dumb.”
The president gives saccharin — an artificial sweetener — as an example. While many Americans use it in their coffee, the EPA requires companies to treat it as hazardous waste. Not any more.
He concludes his op-ed with a final decree: “We’re also getting rid of absurd and unnecessary paperwork requirements that waste time and money.”
“We’re looking at the system as a whole to make sure we avoid excessive, inconsistent and redundant regulation,” he writes in sum. “And finally, today I am directing federal agencies to do more to account for—and reduce—the burdens regulations may place on small businesses. Small firms drive growth and create most new jobs in this country. We need to make sure nothing stands in their way.”

Let’s see. That should allow for the repeal of pretty much everything that he’s signed into law during in the last 2 years (health care, financial reform, etc.). It would also allow us to eliminate such things as:
- stimulus
- the tax code (& elimination of the IRS)
- elimination of the EPA, and regulations that kill manufacturing
…
The list could go on much farther, but you get the basic idea.
Wow, this will be great. When does it start?

It‘s not the government’s job to “protect the environment” or to promote economic growth. The environment is still the environment whether citizens utilize it for production, or not – the environment is not complaining. And with regard to the economy, we need to get this through our thick skulls: government is the RESULT of an economy, not the other way around – that is, government survives on the private sector (taxes); which means that the goal of government is to serve the private sector according to the consent of the governed.

Isn’t what he is proposing to sign supposed to be the job of The Congress of The United States. Just a little Curious about that. Just cause he signs an executive order does not mean anything is going to change just like when he signed that executive order saying there would be no funding for abortions in the healthcare bill. He needs to splain it more LOL.

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 1:25pmThe president gives saccharin — an artificial sweetener — as an example. While many Americans use it in their coffee, the EPA requires companies to treat it as hazardous waste. Always said that artificial stuff would kill people..and apparently jobs too..
Report Post »Listen he HAS to clear the books for all the NEW regulations the EPA will have shortly to KILL our businesses..

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 1:49pmWe will all be sorry for this from Obama. Sounds good, but since when has he ever done anything to help us? Sounds like a good way to put in more of what he wants while no one is paying attention.

“2) provide a means for an infrastructure.”
Yes, but I would qualify this and say that it‘s not the government’s job to GUARANTEE an infrastructure – that‘s the free market’s choice. I happen to think that the National Highway System allows the government way too much power over each State, in that they can say that Federal taxes are justified because we use government-funded roads. This should never have been allowed to happen.
“There should be no federal taxes – the states should set and collect taxes for what it needs for the people who live there, and pay the Federal government to do it’s two jobs for the 50 states.”
Agreed. Government isn’t supposed to do much at all. But what it’s supposed to do, it should be equipped to do.
Federalist Paper #41:
“… cool and candid people will at once reflect, that the purest of human blessings must have a portion of alloy in them; that the choice must always be made, if not of the lesser evil, at least of the GREATER, not the PERFECT, good; and that in every political institution, a power to advance the public happiness involves a discretion which may be misapplied and abused.
“They will see, therefore, that in all cases where power is to be conferred, the point first to be decided is, whether such a power be necessary to the public good; as the next will be, in case of an affirmative decision, to guard as effectually as possible against a perversion of the power to the public detriment.”

No, I don’t think Obama will endorse the repeal of the HC law or lower EPA standards.
Note again that he says the economy is not (not) a zero-sum game.
If it were a zero-sum game, then the only way you or I could become richer would be by making somebody else poorer, i.e. by redistribution of wealth.
But since it’s not a zero-sum game, economic growth offers a way for us all to become richer, and economic growth through sensible regulation seems to be what Obama is endorsing here.
Of course, if, like most of the posters here, you think of Obama as some sort of hellspawn, then none of this makes much difference.
I would hope that is not your view.

The concern you have for regulation is already addressed in a syetem set up to ensure fair trials. In America, we’re innocent until proven guilty, which means that government regulation of the economy (in the sense of controlling, or directing it) is unConstitutional – except for the provision which allows exclusive rights to one’s inventions or intellectual property to make money, for a short time (a short time – one that would reward the inventor/author, but also one that would end and allow everyone to use them to make money).
Since we have the courts, government regulation of commerce in the Progressive sense – not in the sense that the Founders intended – is unnecessary, for one, but also unConstitutional.

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 4:09pmSome of this sounds good, but instead of Executive Order, why not run a bill through Congress?
Report Post »OH THAT’S RIGHT!! Because #1, Obama doesn’t even know there IS a such thing as “Congress” or “The Constitution”, OR #2, he knows there is some hard core BS that John Boehner & Co. wouldn’t STAND for.
Take your pick.
Either way, there needs to be some legislation on the extent a President can enforce “Executive Orders”. I can’t find that ANYWHERE in my pocket Constitution…
