Obama Pens Op-Ed Promising to Remove ‘Dumb’ & ‘Outdated Regulations’

President Obama wants America to know he is a pro-business president.

In an op-ed in Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal, the president promised to sign an executive order to root out “dumb” and “outdated” regulations that “stifle job creation and make our economy less competitive.”

“This order requires that federal agencies ensure that regulations protect our safety, health and environment while promoting economic growth,” Obama writes. “And it orders a government-wide review of the rules already on the books to remove outdated regulations that stifle job creation and make our economy less competitive. It’s a review that will help bring order to regulations that have become a patchwork of overlapping rules, the result of tinkering by administrations and legislators of both parties and the influence of special interests in Washington over decades.”

Still, he made sure to note that this doesn’t erase the need for new regulations. “Where necessary, we won’t shy away from addressing obvious gaps: new safety rules for infant formula; procedures to stop preventable infections in hospitals; efforts to target chronic violators of workplace safety laws,” he says, and then adds: “But we are also making it our mission to root out regulations that conflict, that are not worth the cost, or that are just plain dumb.”

The president gives saccharin — an artificial sweetener — as an example. While many Americans use it in their coffee, the EPA requires companies to treat it as hazardous waste. Not any more.

He concludes his op-ed with a final decree: “We’re also getting rid of absurd and unnecessary paperwork requirements that waste time and money.”

“We’re looking at the system as a whole to make sure we avoid excessive, inconsistent and redundant regulation,” he writes in sum. “And finally, today I am directing federal agencies to do more to account for—and reduce—the burdens regulations may place on small businesses. Small firms drive growth and create most new jobs in this country. We need to make sure nothing stands in their way.”

Read the entire op-ed from the Wall Street Journal.

    What Obama ~really~ means:

    “Trust me, hire people now, which will help my chances for election in 2012, and then in 2013 watch me implement even more extreme ‘dumb’ rules and ‘outdated’ regulations for the sole purpose of advancing my socialist wealth redistribution agenda.”

    Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me!

    Do you really believe that? It is a back door way to change regulations and fine tune laws for their benefit. He never does anything without the end result being greater control. Obama has new blood on the staff, they have new ideas and are not on the current radar. Excuse me, got to go. The helicopters are flying overhead again.

    … root out “dumb” and “outdated” regulations that “stifle job creation and make our economy less competitive”

    Let’s see. That should allow for the repeal of pretty much everything that he’s signed into law during in the last 2 years (health care, financial reform, etc.). It would also allow us to eliminate such things as:
    - stimulus
    - the tax code (& elimination of the IRS)
    - elimination of the EPA, and regulations that kill manufacturing

    The list could go on much farther, but you get the basic idea.

    Wow, this will be great. When does it start?

Just because he’s decided to wear the flag on his lapel does not detract from him standing w/his hands at his sides for the playing of Taps on Memorial Day. Just because he‘s suddenly bringing in religion doesn’t make him genuine when you teach and practice Alinsky. Just because you preach fiscal responsibilty doesn’t make it credible when you flaunt the extravagance of government. I seem to recall you allowing the loosening of regulations just prior to the oil spill even though you appointed the new head of the department that was supposed to oversee that regulations were properly adheared to…..I’m REAL SKEPTICAL OF YOU BARRY.

      It‘s not the government’s job to “protect the environment” or to promote economic growth. The environment is still the environment whether citizens utilize it for production, or not – the environment is not complaining. And with regard to the economy, we need to get this through our thick skulls: government is the RESULT of an economy, not the other way around – that is, government survives on the private sector (taxes); which means that the goal of government is to serve the private sector according to the consent of the governed.

It seems as though you people are filled with such a blind hatred of all things Obama that you can’t even commend the man when he does something right. Less regulation is what we need and what we’ve all been saying, but when he does it all yall can do is hate on the man for doing it. I don‘t like Obama’s politics or what he believes in, but I am an independent enough thinker to applaud him when he does something applaudable. This is about whats best for the country, not simply hating Obama.

Oh, wait………he can’t do that if he wants to be re-elected…..I suppose that the Executive Order will ensure that government documents will now be done in duplicate instead of triplicate….way to lead, Dear Leader……where would we be without him?????

      A Doctors Labor Is Not My Right, you are 101% correct, the gov’t has no business messing with the economy or the environment – the gov’t is there BECAUSE of us and is there to SERVE us, not the other way around – and nothing will change until US realizes it – the Fed Gov’t has only 2 legitimate purposes 1) protect us and 2) provide a means for an infrastructure. Everything else should happen at the city and state level, where the people who live there can decide what happens there. There should be no federal taxes – the states should set and collect taxes for what it needs for the people who live there, and pay the Federal government to do it’s two jobs for the 50 states.

      The president gives saccharin — an artificial sweetener — as an example. While many Americans use it in their coffee, the EPA requires companies to treat it as hazardous waste. Always said that artificial stuff would kill people..and apparently jobs too..

      @Moment of Clarity

      “2) provide a means for an infrastructure.”

      Yes, but I would qualify this and say that it‘s not the government’s job to GUARANTEE an infrastructure – that‘s the free market’s choice. I happen to think that the National Highway System allows the government way too much power over each State, in that they can say that Federal taxes are justified because we use government-funded roads. This should never have been allowed to happen.

      “There should be no federal taxes – the states should set and collect taxes for what it needs for the people who live there, and pay the Federal government to do it’s two jobs for the 50 states.”

      Agreed. Government isn’t supposed to do much at all. But what it’s supposed to do, it should be equipped to do.

      Federalist Paper #41:

      “… cool and candid people will at once reflect, that the purest of human blessings must have a portion of alloy in them; that the choice must always be made, if not of the lesser evil, at least of the GREATER, not the PERFECT, good; and that in every political institution, a power to advance the public happiness involves a discretion which may be misapplied and abused.

      “They will see, therefore, that in all cases where power is to be conferred, the point first to be decided is, whether such a power be necessary to the public good; as the next will be, in case of an affirmative decision, to guard as effectually as possible against a perversion of the power to the public detriment.”

      @Anonymous T:

      No, I don’t think Obama will endorse the repeal of the HC law or lower EPA standards.

      Note again that he says the economy is not (not) a zero-sum game.

      If it were a zero-sum game, then the only way you or I could become richer would be by making somebody else poorer, i.e. by redistribution of wealth.

      But since it’s not a zero-sum game, economic growth offers a way for us all to become richer, and economic growth through sensible regulation seems to be what Obama is endorsing here.

      Of course, if, like most of the posters here, you think of Obama as some sort of hellspawn, then none of this makes much difference.

      I would hope that is not your view.

      @Lloyd Drako,

      “But since it’s not a zero-sum game, economic growth offers a way for us all to become richer, and economic growth through sensible regulation seems to be what Obama is endorsing here.”

      The concern you have for regulation is already addressed in a syetem set up to ensure fair trials. In America, we’re innocent until proven guilty, which means that government regulation of the economy (in the sense of controlling, or directing it) is unConstitutional – except for the provision which allows exclusive rights to one’s inventions or intellectual property to make money, for a short time (a short time – one that would reward the inventor/author, but also one that would end and allow everyone to use them to make money).

      Since we have the courts, government regulation of commerce in the Progressive sense – not in the sense that the Founders intended – is unnecessary, for one, but also unConstitutional.
