Obama Pitches Plan to Promote High-Tech Innovation

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama says technological innovations can help create jobs and spur growth in clean energy and advanced manufacturing.

In his radio and Internet address, the president promoted a plan he outlined Friday in which the government would join with universities and corporations to re-ignite the manufacturing sector with an emphasis on cutting-edge research and new technologies.

“Their mission is to come up with a way to get ideas from the drawing board to the manufacturing floor to the marketplace as swiftly as possible, which will help create quality jobs, and make our businesses more competitive,” Obama said in the address aired Saturday.

It was taped Friday during his visit to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where he saw a display of mini-robots that explore water and sewer pipes.

He marveled at robots that can defuse a bomb, mow a lawn, even scrape old paint.

With growing interest from the military, businesses and consumers, the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute has more than 500 technical experts and a $65 million annual budget.

The $500 million initiative is the latest effort by Obama to promote job creation in the midst of an economic slowdown that has reduced hiring and weakened his job approval standing with the public.

Obama has tried to brave the weak economy by featuring job creation measures during weekly trips outside Washington and in his radio addresses. On Tuesday, he will visit an Alcoa factory in Bettendorf, Iowa.

The goal of his manufacturing plan, he said, is “to help make sure America remains in this century what we were in the last – a country that makes things.”

As he prepares to meet with Senate leaders on Monday in hopes of restarting budget negotiations, Obama said he is “committed to working with members of both parties to cut our deficits and debt.”

But he said he would not cut spending on education or infrastructure or in the type of innovative technologies he witnessed at Carnegie Mellon. “Being here in Pittsburgh, I’m hopeful about the future,” he said.

In the Republican’s weekly address, Rep. Renee Ellmers of North Carolina proposed a different remedy to boost businesses.

Ellmers, who owns a small medical practice with her husband, said the Republican plan would reduce regulations, expand domestic energy production and require the government to consider the effect of federal rules on hiring.

“The job creators we hear from, they don’t have their hand out,” she said. “They don’t want a bailout. All they ask us to do is get government out of the way.”

Obama will never understand. He has literally slid by his whole life. He’s never had to meet a deadline, or balance a budget, or hire or fire anyone. Never had to work with a customer, etc. These are things that normal working people do, but he’s moved from easy college (all records hidden, no publications), to community organizer, to guest lecturer (who didn’t follow the course outline), to propped up state senator, and so on.

Obama thinks he can *command* people to innovate.

I wish somebody could get it through The Boy King’s head that nothing other than taxes, regulations and unions are the reason the economy is in the toilet. Those things are the unholy triniy of unemployment and a shrinking economy. Can‘t anybody get it through this guy’s thick skull that what made America great in the first 100 years after the founding was not government but a lack of government?

Maybe it’s a good thing for the government to invest in robots to do jobs. We’ll probably all have starved from lack of food production (that which hasn’t gone to making ethanol) by the time they’re ready to use.

No one has caught the phrase “the country that makes things” so I‘ll be the first to say somethin’ about it. All of the jobs that create things get sent to foreign countries..because it’s easier and cheaper to do it over there..if he and his posse would get out of the way and let us do what we do best we could be the country that makes things again..but apparently he doesn’t see that. Well I take that back..he does see that..but that‘s something he doesn’t want…he wants us all to be dependent on the government and that‘s why he’s looking at robots and is so fascinated at the fact that they can do all these things..I‘m sure while he was watching these robots do all these things the wheels in his head were turnin’ and he was thinkin’…”Yeah, I‘m gonna make sure that when we decide on a budget THIS will not go unfunded so that we can perfect them get people to build them and then after they’re built give them the peoples jobs and then the people will be dependent on ME!” and then he chuckles an evil chuckle under his breath…Ok I got a little carried away..but you never know with this guy!

Obama at his best is really the perfect example of a luddite, which defines on Wikipedia is: “textile artisans in the nineteenth century who protested – often by destroying mechanized looms – against the changes produced by the Industrial Revolution, which they felt were leaving them without work and changing their way of life.”

Replace “looms” with “ATM’s” and what is the difference? The Marxist is a complete and utter disaster. His blabbering about ATM’s is – in my opinion – far worse than Al Gore taking credit for developing the internet. The latter is an exaggeration while the former is frighteningly backwards, hillbilly thinking.

Remember back in the late 1970′s when everybody pretended Jimmy Carter was a genius, too? The difference is back then, we had a media and majority in this country that finally admitted their monstrous mistake. That’s the key difference between then and now. Nobody is capable or willing to “police” themselves or others any longer. It’s really shameful.

I am so glad to see he has embraced innovation where it never happens. The high-seat of innovation is the garage of the individual, the seed from which a small business grows. Today, people do not start these small businesses because of all the regulation, IRS threats and other government overreaches.

So ATMS are bad because they cause unemployment yet robots are good? Robots are going to be put in newly created jobs or take jobs from humans??

This is beginning to read like a sci-fi novel. People will have nothing to do other than stuff that brings them pleasure (arts) and nothing more. No money, everyone on equal footing. Yeah, that‘s what it’s looking like. Let the robots of the world do everything difficult and soon, people will be come extinct. We’re already becoming irrelevant.

Have another dose of that gubment education and all will be ok, as long as you don’t expect it to get you a job. What is all this education for if we chase all the jobs to China. Burger flippers don’t need a million dollar education in debt to get hired. I think the real industry of growth is making more college professors to sell us all this education that we don’t need. Now that’s the real growth industry. I have heard that the benefits are not to shabby in that business either. Ah, public work, a liberals dream, no pressure, be as dumb as a rock and held in high esteem with lifetime income protection. Is this a great country or what.

THIS IS ACTUALLY A GREAT IDEA WHEN IT COMES TO ADVANCING AMERICA, BUT IT WON’T SOLVE THE ECONOMY AND JOBLESS RATE.

The research and development alone will take years and will not add one person to the manufacturing line or the laboratory until it is found. This is just another failed scheme to advance his left-wing agenda by advancing his friends.

It’s funny how the left wants to demonize the rich, those that create jobs and say they are taking the money away from the middle class, sorry it just isn’t true. Besides the unemployment rate which everyone is being hurt by the middle class isn’t as hurt as everyone would think: http://tiny.cc/aqysy

Yeah, they can have heir plants in the Democrat controlled city, they tax bussiness right out of this county. Funny how one of the fastest growing city at one point, Cranberry, Pa, is located just outside the Allegheny County border, in Butler County, where they keep the taxes low. They seem to understand that if the keep their tax low on business, business will come and make more jobs, which brings in more tax money through the workers and property taxes…. These people are completely out of touch with reality.
