‘I’ve Seen It on Television’: Obama Responds to Wall St. Protests

On Thursday, President Obama issued his first comments on the growing unrest taking place in New York City regarding the Wall St. protesters. He refused to condemn any of their actions (despite multiple altercations with police) and said they are just expressing the frustrations of other Americans.
“Obviously, I’ve heard of it. I’ve seen it on television,” he said. “I think it expresses the frustrations that the American people feel. That we had the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression. Huge collateral damage all throughout the country, all across Main Street. And yet, you’re still seeing some of the same folks who acted irresponsibly trying to fight efforts to crack down on abusive practices that got us in this problem in the first place.”

Obama’s comments come on the heels of Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke also refusing to condemn the protests, even sympathizing with them. While testifying on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, Bernanke said he “cant blame” the protesters who have, at times, tangled with police:
I would just say very generally, I think people are quite unhappy with the state of the economy and what’s happening. They blame, with some justification, the problems in the financial sector for getting us into this mess, and they’re dissatisfied with the policy response here in Washington. And at some level, I can’t blame them. Certainly, 9 percent unemployment and very slow growth is not a good situation. [Emphasis added]

I do not begrudge the OWS people the right to protest and be heard – I encourage them to speak their minds peacefully. However, I am certain that if the Tea Party-types do not get out with public demonstrations about personal responsibility and smaller government, then the OWS folk will soon dictate political discussion the same way the nearly uncontested Tea Party managed to do in ‘09. Thoughts?

Softof like that crap credit card protection act, that capped atm fees that almost nobody pays anymore, but allowed banks to soon start charging $5 a month per card to have a debit card even if you don’t use it. Allowed credit card company to skyrocket your interest rate, etc. Or the health care protection act, that will make doctors and insurance companies trillions, while dragging the middle class before the death panels.

It certainly could happen that way — it appears the perfect storm is a-brewing and there will be a reason to suspend elections and declare martial law all in the name of protecting the people. We had all better start making vocal demands NOW else the time will come when we cannot. While it’s a nice thought by some that say things here like “lock and load” and “I am ready, come get me”, I‘m betting most of them don’t have a clue as to what a real firefight is all about and how they will be just a gnat to be brushed aside when it really gets dicey.

By the way, policy is not made on Wall Street, it’s made by government, which Obama is in charge of. Let’s also remember that, for his first two years he had democrat majorities in both houses which gave him everything he asked for.
If the DNC and event organizers are successful we will have much more of failed government policies and sink right along with socialist Europe.
Sadly,this is a rally the masses and blame the elite tactic right out of the Marx handbook; which has devastated every nation which has tried it.
In the end it has become the lefts purpose to make everyone dependent on them. That, requires poverty so their plan us working and they know it. So, be not astonished as they do more and more if what we all know won’t work; it is for them, not us.
Remember always, capital is something you create in the free market not something you print. No real recovery can begin until small and sized businesses see it in their interest to invest. Those are the same ones under attack by the administration.
Lastly, total government spending and regulation is close to sixty percent of GDP and it is mathematically impossible for significant new investment to take place once government spends more than fifty percent of our yearly capital income GDP. No matter what your politics

There is much in these protests to question and wonder about; for instance, who is organizing them and why? Despite the outward confusion and lack of focus associated with the protests, there have been several people who have individually expressed ideas that are very worrisome. “Revolution,“ ”change”, “death to capitalism,” etc..These are not things you hear said without seriously considering what is meant by those who say them.
They have every right to assemble and gripe. They have every right to be internationl communists also. But there is a point that can and most likely will be crossed eventually. This isn’t going to end with them packing up their tents and going home. They are committed to something and want to see something happen.
If they start blocking bridges or storming buildings then this situation will enter a new phase at which I’d like to hear your opinion then….

It’s the very thing this country was founded on. Now as far as your question ” who is organizing them and why?” Did you ask this question when the Tea Party was organized. It‘s no secret that there was BIG MONEY and BIG ORGANIZATIONS involved with it’s creation.

I think all the anti-capitalists should file by a large dumpster and deposit all te electronic gadgets that CAPITALSIM made possible! Let’s go people, drop ‘em in the dumpster and go string a couple of tin cans together for communication. We’re going to REDISTRIBUTE these to the less fortunate. How does it feel to have YOUR property redistributed???
Just too bad the weather doesn’t turn foul enough to send these people packing — just a little rain and wind to make it miserable for them — not for New Yorkers who have some type of shelter whether it’s at work or at home, just these campers creating a nuisance for the city.
