Obama Resurrects Tax Increase Argument During Debt Speech

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a blunt challenge to Republicans in Congress, President Barack Obama insisted Wednesday that eliminating selected tax breaks for oil companies and the super-wealthy must be part of any deficit reduction plan.

“That’s not radical,” he said at a White House news conference. He was quick to add that a bipartisan agreement is possible to cut deficits, raise the government’s debt limit and avert a threatened financial crisis.

Republicans in Congress have been insistent in recent days that any deficit reduction be limited to spending cuts, including reductions in benefit programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, and exclude additional revenues.

But Obama said both parties must be prepared to “take on their sacred cows” as part of the deficit-reduction negotiations.

In his opening remarks, the president called on lawmakers to renew a payroll tax cut that took effect on Jan. 1, identifying it as one of several measures lawmakers could approve to help create jobs. He also urged passage of trade agreements with Panama, South Korea and Colombia, and an overhaul of the nation’s patent laws.

Obama’s last previous full-fledged news conference was in March. In the intervening months, the economic recovery has slowed, the president has announced a plan to begin withdrawing U.S. combat troops from Afghanistan and the administration has joined an international military coalition working to prevent the rout of rebels hoping to topple Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

Above all loom the negotiations with Congress on deficit cuts demanded by Republicans as the price for supporting an increase in the nation’s debt limit.

The president stepped to the podium not long after the International Monetary Fund publicly urged lawmakers to raise the debt limit, now $14.3 trillion, and warned that failure to do so could produce a spike in interest rates and “severe shock to the economy and world financial markets.”

It recommended a long-term strategy for reducing red ink, warning that cutting deficits too quickly could slow the weak recovery of the U.S. economy.

The budget deficit is projected to reach a record $1.4 trillion for the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.

On Libya, the president defended American participation in the NATO military action, saying the U.S. had carried out a “narrow mission in an exemplary fashion” against a tyrant who was threating to “massacre his people.”

“We have not seen a single U.S. casualty,” he said. “There’s no risk of additional escalation. This operation is limited in time and in scope.”

Under pressure to call for gay marriages, the president said he has done more than all 43 of his presidential predecessors to advance the cause of rights for homosexual Americans.

He pointed to eliminating the ban on openly gay men and women serving in the military, a policy known as “don’t ask, don’t tell,” as well as ordering the Justice Department not to defend a law that defines marriage as between a man and woman.

Time to cut out the presidential travel budget. Sell the presidential fleet to China should the be interested, else park in the Arizona desert near Tucson. Strip aircraft and move them to the Goldwater Range near Gila Bend.
A third world banana republic like the Obama Nation shouldn’t have a aircraft fleet for their petty dictator and his family.
Latest Botswana boondoggle by her sleeveless majesty was said to cost tax payers $800,000,000.00 for the week. An obviously essential expense for national survival.

The IMF does not want tax cuts – because the IMF wants to pull the US down – just like the UN. Tax cuts stopped the depression of ‘24-25 -while the New Deal kept the depression of 1930 lasting 3x longer then Europes – which cut taxes and government spending. The Dems blocked Clinton and Bush on correcting Fannie/Feddie, and Bush on stopping “mark to market” and the “affordable housing act” – which led to the corruption of the housing/mortgage market and the leading cause of the recession we are in. Greece, UK and others cutting government to reduce debt – but Obummer is increasing government spending and adding millions of new federal workers. Anything this idiot says you should do – do the opposite!

If we are, you don’t get to decide what laws will or will not be followed. If it is a legal law, follow it.

If he doesn’t want a valid law being enforced, well, I don’t want to follow other laws. You break the social contract, don’t expect the citizens to follow it anymore either.

The jobs are sitting there waiting for the elimination of controlled taxes/EPA restrictions/Obamacare/. Company owners I know have said they will not hire due to the states‘ money problems up in the air and the Gov’s unknown policies. When these regulations are stabilized they will hire, maybe, and the banks will lend. The President just made his talking points to tax the rich aircraft owners not thinking of the thousands who work on these aircraft who will be unemployed. His hand picked reporters asked cream puff questions and the answers were the same Repubs, “It’s my way or the hiway”

Why don’t all the rich, liberal, Hollywood types, athletes, music industry whores, G.E. executives and the rest the obama cronies start up a fund where they donate 75% of their wealth toward paying down some of the massive debt you progressives have saddled us with,…and then talk.

the fed stabilizes stock prices now, not the u.s. dollar as they are chartered to do.

Question to Tea Party Members and far right leaning Republicans: Wouldn’t it be better, at a time of serious problems with our economy, to end this childish tirade of the current President and think about what it is he is saying then to continue going about trying to block every form of progress and accomplish nothing?

How does the Republican Party feel it can win this upcoming election? It appears that your only plan is to tell Americans that Obama is to blame for the economic problems while you do absolutely nothing to help the economic problem. You plan on winning, not on what you have done (which isn’t much for either party right now) but by saying that you would be better than him?

I think so because, so far, you have not brought one candidate to the table that could even be the POTUS let alone run for it.

Don’t you think it would be better to run on what you can accomplish instead of what you can break down and destroy?

Why do liberals always think the solution to overspending and corruption is to confiscate more of the peoples’ income. The government is not entitled to more then half of my earnings. No matter how much they take they will spend it all and take more. Why are you all so unwilling to cut the spending? We HAVE listened to what Obama has said. This is exactly what he meant when he said that he was “managing the decline of America”. “Managing”, not “preventing”, “delaying” or “combating”. Obama and his ilk want the US to be in decline. A tax on energy producers and the rich would be highly damaging to the economy and would cost the United States countless jobs. The rich are the job producers. By taxing their income, you disincentivize business. Try to think through the economics of the situation and the problems at hand for a change.

People need to decide: is balancing the budget more important than their personal tax rate? Everyone agrees spending cuts are needed, but the math is simple: if you don’t increase taxes in addition to cutting items that neither side can agree on, the budget cannot be balanced.

If we want Medicare and Social Security cut, we need tax increases as bargaining chips. The Democrats will not kill themselves for the sake of the budget; it’s not their priority. They’d rather spend spend spend… and if we can balance the budget too, well, that’s cool. If we don’t agree to negotiate tax rates, then the GOP does not want to actually balance the budget, no matter what they say. Refusing to compromise is the same as giving up; we all need to step up, be the bigger men, and say “Fine, everything is up for debate. Taxes, AND your golden cows of social security and Medicare.”

Anyone denying this doesn’t actually want to balance the budget, because they KNOW nothing will be done unless it happens.

Not sure why I decided to listen to him today…

maybe I got a little more COURAGEOUS!?!?

When he speaks extemporaneously like this, is when the nuggets of truth are found.
He is accustomed to using a teleprompter.
So, when he is off-teleprompter, he cannot HELP but speak the truth at least OCCASIONALLY.
Sometimes you have to DIG for it, but, the truth is there.
In the safety and secrecy of their closed-door meetings, they use the same arguments, justification, phrasing, etc., with regularity – it is human nature – certain phrases will percolate to the top of the conversation in such meetings – it is even a part of their Alinsky tactics.
HOWEVER, this is also their weakness – in repeating certain phrases and justifications, those same phrases and justifications will surface anytime they are speaking without prepared comments. So, when he goes off-prompter, he will naturally let certain phrases ‘slip’, or he will repeat certain phrases more than once, or will repeatedly use the same justification for his actions.
THOSE are the moments of truth and clarity which catch my attention.
There is also something in his (and everyone’s) mannerisms and speech patterns that highlights which of those repeats are ‘prepared’ and which are unintended – much of it is the “um” “um” “er” “um”, the hesitations, the unusual word choice, the eye contact, and the body language.

The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy?
      BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!
Thank Congress for taking us from 13,000 DOW, 3.5 GDP and 4.6% Unemployment to this CRISIS by dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac fiasco’s! And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac? OBAMA. And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie??? OBAMA and the Democratic Congress.

“We have to tackle spending in the tax code”

Those are his own words in this speech.

He concedes, as does everybody, that SPENDING is the problem.

However, as he CLEARLY STATES in the above quote, he sees a lack of taxation as “spending”.
Using his very own words, if we tax everybody 100% of their income, we are not “spending”.
ANYTHING LESS than 100% TAXATION is considered “spending” to him.

So, he considers the fact that we are allowed to keep ANY of our income is part of the problem!!!

This man may be worse than “JUST” a SOCIALIST!!!

He COULD be a Marxist or even a COMMUNIST, based upon this assertion and belief.

I’m not making this up, folks. THESE ARE HIS OWN WORDS.

If you view non-taxation as an EXPENSE, you are NOT a capitalist and you are not even a ‘socialist’ you are either a marxist or a communist. You believe that government is entitled to any and all personal wealth, and if government fails to take any of that wealth, the government is SPENDING money by not taking it.

If wealth belongs to the people, then you are TAKING it from them.
If wealth belongs to the state, then allowing people to keep it is SPENDING.
The difference is CLEAR – it is as plain as night and day.

This guy is WRONG for America!
He needs to go to Russia or China or at least to Europe where he is ‘not a radical’

The republicans have not offered a solution??? Ummm yes we have. We offered alternative solutions back in 2009 and in 2010. We were told to shut up, he won the election and he doesn’t have to listen to anything we say. Republican Governors across the country have been doing a stellar job, ans they get called fascists and nazis. The Paul Ryan budget!!!

So there goes your “you haven’t done anything or provided any alternatives” shtick.

“Failed economic policies of the past decade”
Okay, this one is easy. What did George Bush do? He increased federal spending by 2 trillion, and got us into 2 wars. What has Obama done? THE EXACT SAME THING! HE IS FOLLOWING BUSH’S POLICIES! Obama has increased federal spending by over 4 TRILLION dollars, we are STILL in Iraq, Afghanistan and NOW Libya. Not to mention the VAST amount of federal regulations passed on the food industry and the farming industry.

I mean c’mon guy… if you are going to take the approach of “I’m an objectionable level headed Liberal”, then at LEAST use new material and at least present us with some common sense or fact that can’t be shot down by a 10 year old and laptop.

The posts here show the clearly difference between the left and the right. In the clip, President Obama says he is in favor of ending government subsidies for oil companies. Oil companies are making record profits and the gas prices remain high. Do you think if Big Oil makes record profits they’re going to lower the cost of oil? No, that would be stupid. You think they give a damn about what you pay at the gas pump? They are in the business of making money and they will charge whatever the market will support, just like the oil speculators will, like any other company.

So Big Oil is making record profits, you’re paying outrageous prices and the pump, and you want the government to GIVE THEM MONEY?

This is simply politics: the right supports the “richest among us” even though it’s against your best interest and raises the national debt. You think you are being patriotic paying for the mansions, jets and limos for people who laugh at you and screw you out of every penny they can get. Suckers.

jzs, the government doesn’t “give them money”. The subsidies are tax breaks. In other words, the government takes less of their money leaving them more to re-invest in exploration, production, and contributions to your 401(k). Yes, your 401(k); assuming you even have one, it’s is most likely invested in oil companies. Get it?

TexasCommonSense, sorry I don’t “get it.” Oil companies are making records profits. They are making more money than ever before and you and I are getting squeezed at the gas pump. And you want the government to give them more money. Okay you say “subsidize” meaning they don’t pay those taxes, rather than paying those taxes and the government giving it back to them. Whatever.

So Big Oil is making record profits, I’m getting screwed at the gas pump, and you want to give Big Oil more money to explore? They can do that with their profits right? Like other companies?

Sorry, Big Oil isn’t contributing in my 401K. If that’s your argument for increasing the national debt, creating more billionaires while Americans get shafted on the debt and at the gas station, then you should get another argument.

This man is a blithering monstrous fool. He thinks beyond any sense of reason that people who have built successful businesses and have worked their whole lives somehow owe what they have built to the government. How does the government lay claim to what rich people have created and built with their tireless work and the wealth they created? By what right does this demon child claim that those that have produced must now give it up to those who have spend frivolously and criminally and want to give it to those that have not created?

      @encinom

A subsidy and a tax incentive are two different things, Eisenstein.

A subsidy is “A grant or contribution of money.”

A tax incentive is basically an agreement no to take what already belongs to a corporation. It is their money to begin with, not the government‘s or someone else’s.

“Justifiy (sp) the tax breaks to the Oil Companys (sp – I see you must be a product of the public schools system) when at the same time you are looking at cutting off Granny from Medicare.”

The money belongs to the oil company. Where exactly does Granny get the Medicare money from again? Who exactly produces that money? Do you think it grows on trees?

Gold Coin & Economic News- do the oil companies own the land where they drill? Did they buy it from the United States? No, they didn’t buy that land. The United States of America is allowing them to extract oil from US property. That land is your land, that land is my land in the words of the Woodie Guthrey song.

So you want to give your tax dollars to this company. Why? I don’t want to give tax dollars to companies who are making record profits and companies who are they most profitable in the world. Why should I give these guys my money when I’m getting screwed at the pump? And you want to give them more of your money? Are you what, their….something?

jzs, the federal gas tax is far higher than the profit made by oil companies per gallon of gas. That is contributing much more to the high price of fuel. Despite that money being collect for roads, our nations highways and bridges are in horrible shape.

If you don’t like the subsidies, change the tax code. They won’t do that because companies Obama likes, such as GE, also wouldn’t get the tax breaks either. You know, GE, whose CEO sits on Obama’s economic advisory board and paid no Federal tax last year. You’re OK with that inappropriate relationship? So much for his promises of no lobbyists or big business influence. Just another lie. I guess this is part of his “rewarding his friends and punishing his enemies”.

Then the Obama administration makes every effort to block local oil production arguing the increased supply won’t significantly affect the price. Then they turn around and release 30M barrels saying just the opposite.

I say we get rid of the largest problem, that’s big government.

JZS, the tax cuts, not subsidies, that oil companies get, are simply based on depreciation of assets. Any company that has assets, ie. equipment, can claim this tax deduction, Its not something that is singled out to just oil companies. To deny it to oil companies would mean to deny it to any other company in the U.S.

@jzs Gotcha there buddy. I see by your avatar pic where you are coming from.

Unfortunately, you don’t have a clue about how subsidies, tax breaks or even how the economy works. First, I’m sure if oil companies are using US government land, they are paying for it. Secondly, none of my tax money or any of your tax money is going to any oil company. Taxes are collected by the federal and state governments and they don’t go to oil companies, they are TAKEN from them. Do you understand that? It is THEIR money to begin with.

Thirdly, what, you don’t think oil companies pay enough in taxes? They pay an astronomical amount of taxes, in the billions of dollars every year. Get it? They already pay BILLIONS in taxes, and for what? Oil companies have HUGE capital investments, they have HUGE labor costs, they have HUGE transportation costs and they take HUGE risks and then the government steps in with NONE of those costs and says, “give us money for allowing you to be in business.”

Chew on this – Did you know that state and federal governments make more money in taxes on a gallon of gas than oil companies do in profit. And for what?

Lastly – Hate oil companies? Why are you driving? Why are you buying anything with plastic in it? Why are you using any electricity? Dude, get off the grid, grow a garden and do something with your life and stop b*tching about how you are getting screwed by oil companies when you are bending over for the federal government every frickin day!

      @middleclassprophet,
You do realize that 10 years ago, Canada’s debt to GDP was as high as ours, over 10 years of cutting back on government spending, their economy is booming. Shouldn’t that tell you something?!
      ———————————–
@johngalt – there are lots of differences between the two economies (Canada and the US). The biggest one being they actually make stuff and export. Also, while we deregulated everything we could think of, they kept regulation high and thus their banks did not get into the trouble of ours and so they have been buying (and in some cases flipping) many of our banks and insurers. Their taxes are much higher than ours with a 29% top rate for the federal portion and provincial ranging from 10% in Alberta to 21% in Nova Scotia at the top end. They did make deep cuts, but they also closed off many tax loopholes used by corporations including the dismantling of the royalty trusts, so even though they have the lowest corporate tax rate of all G7 countries they also have the fewest loopholes with which to avoid paying tax. Most of Canada’s tax revenue comes via individual paying tax and not whining about it, I think it is about 75%). Canada also does not feed a military in the astronomical numbers we do.
Many Americans see their taxes as way too high, but Canadians are among the most properous people in the world.

      JZS – ENCINOM

      Please explain these to me.

      1. If the “Evil Rich” who pay the most dollars/highest percentages of taxes aren’t paying their “fair” share, what does that make everyone who pays less dollars and a lower percentage?

08, the top 10% paid 70% of the taxes. The bottom 50% paid 3% of the taxes.

      2. How long could you run your household spending 40% more than you made before making serious/painful cuts? Would you make the cuts?

10, 2.2 trillion was collected in tax revenue, 3.5 trillion (40% more than collected) was spent.

      3. What logic was used to get the conclusion of a MORE expensive operating cost produces a LESS expensive end product. It seems someone as “greedy” as big oil would pass the extra burden to the purchaser, inevitably “shafting” you more at the pump, right?

      4. How much money could one make before they have too much? What dollar amount would you limit the American Dream to?

By reading your post I assumed the following.

Regardless of what tax bracket YOU are in YOU don’t pay enough and you will make a charitable donation above and beyond what is required to the IRS. You would make cuts before your went bankrupt. I have no explanation for number three other than you must want to pay more at the pump. I also have no explanation for four because I do not subscribe to limiting my fellow mans potential, even yours. Reach for the Stars!
