Obama: Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Legal

President Barack Obama believes same-sex marriage should be legal, the first American president to say so.

“I’ve been going through an evolution on this issue,” Obama told ABC News Wednesday. “At a certain point, I’ve just concluded that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.”

Obama had formally opposed same-sex marriage, though in recent years said he was “evolving.”

“I have hesitated on gay marriage in part because I thought that civil unions would be sufficient,” he said. “I was sensitive to the fact that for a lot of people the word marriage was something that evokes very powerful traditions, religious beliefs and so forth.”

Obama: Same Sex Marriage Should Be Legal

He told ABC his views evolved amid conversations with his own staff, openly gay service members and his wife and daughters.

“Malia and Sasha, it wouldn‘t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated different,” Obama said. “It doesn’t make sense to them and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

Obama said his views are his own personal position and that he still supports the rights of states to make their own laws deciding the issue.

Polling shows Americans are deeply divided over whether same-sex marriage should be legal. A Gallup poll released Tuesday said 50 percent believe it should be recognized, with the same rights as traditional marriages, while 48 percent believe it should not be legal.

The issue became front-and-center news this week after Vice President Joe Biden said he was “absolutely comfortable” with same-sex marriage.

This is the best thing that could have happened for Mitt Romney. NC (was blue in 2008) just voted for a state constitutional amendment defining marriage a between one man and one woman and it passed by more than 20%. Say goodbye to NC Mr.Usurper. It just so happens that all of the so-called “swing states” have similar laws. Say goodbye Mr. Usurper to those swing states. Romney would have to trip over his own tongue to lose this one.

Stop making a straw man out of people fornicate with the same sex, no one is treating them differently and no one even cared about what they were doing in the confines of their own homes as they had expressed as much in the 70s-80s that it was their business. Yes whatever! But when they say they want to change the rules of marriage to include them when no other society on earth has ever done this, no other civilization nor person of historical importance ever advocated for gay marriage or unions in society including Jesus. Do we really believe we know better than all those in history…apparently so.

Black overwhelmingly voted YES on Prop 8 here in California. This is the only reasons he has reservations and of course his Muslim faith.

      I smell voter turnout play.
We’ve got to make our case better or the easy emotion play is going to get the win this time.
Gay marriage is not about equal rights, it’s about getting SPECIAL rights for a group based on a completely unmeasurable surface criteria (professed same gender attraction). If it was about rights, any well-drawn contract between two individuals would suffice.
Instead, it’s about a legal and societal stamp of approval on behavior to legitimize attacks on the Judeo-Christian morality upon which our legal system is based, and upon the basic unit of society (the family) which remains the only viable institution where it has been demonstrated that new good and moral citizens have a decent fighting chance at getting raised right.
We need to make the case for something that’s never needed to have the case made for it. We have to explain common sense to those who have none and in fact think it needs to be challenged. We have to show them not merely that they’re trying to reinvent the wheel of society, but that they’re destroying an institution which, as an ideal, is objectively good and useful–and that it’s therefore immoral to destroy it.

The gay community supported this clown whole heartedly in 2008. The first 2 years of his administration the demorats controlled the house, senate, and WH and they didnt do anything for the community. They jammed obbumercare down our throats but didnt do a damn thing for the gay community. Obummer will claim victory in overturning DADT but the truth is the the Log Cabin Republicans, (Gay Republicans) filed and won the law suit the determined DADT was unconstitutional. After that Obummer didnt want the court “making legislation” and eliminated DADT by signing a law making it officially done and over with. He could’ve passed gay marriage rights laws when he and the demorats controlled everything, but he didnt. His muslim beliefs wont allow him to sign any gay marriage rights. Now that he is up for re-elction he gets to use the whole issue to blame republicans for why gays cant marry. He gets to turn this into a tool to get the gay voters back to supporting him. Demorats march in the gay pride parades and only care about gay people for fundraisers and votes. Once the elections are over they forget the gay community and all the promisses they have made to them. Just like keeping the black community on the welfare plantation they keep dangling carrots in front of the gay community that they have no intention of giving them. The demorats motto: lie, cheat and steal and so many cant figure that out. Thier history is full of it. He doesnt support gay marriage, 3 1/2 years proves it

      Obama the revolutionary

Metaphorically speaking, there’s a revolution going on in the U.S., propped up by three legs. Economic chaos, chaos through racial division, and chaos through class division, all joined by one core element: Barack Hussein Obama and his stable of unelected czars. Obama is using the lessons learned in 1968 as the template for 2012, and many of those who were active in the late 1960′s are now calling the shots for 2012.

“The Obama administration and many of the un-appointed ‘czars,’, either directly or indirectly, are engaged in covert activities with the occupy movement, various labor protests, and other subversive activities inside the U.S.,” stated my source. Using untracked campaign funds, they are paying people to infiltrate the various movements to cause physical destruction of property and disrupt commerce. That began last year, but has increased ten-fold already this year,” stated this source. He added that they are using some lower level DHS agents to make the payments under the context of tracking subversives, but they are the unwitting subversives. “It’s like Fast & Furious” but in the social realm,” he added.

“Obama is using some high profile people as pawns to foment the revolution. I heard several times through very credible sources that [Louis] Farrakhan is on the CIA payroll. Other have been named as well, but I’m not prepared to identify them yet. Farrakhan is to coordinate the Blacks and the Muslims to

It starts out with Hitler, but the 2nd half has a twist that I never saw coming.
I think it changed my mind to a more Conservative view. I only sided with Conservatives because I saw so much corruption, dishonesty, and the poor handling of the economy by Liberals. Now I have another reason for siding with Conservatives… one that I never cared about before seeing this video.

I have evolved on this issue in my life. I used to not think “Gay” marriage should be allowed. But being older and hopefully wiser I have thought about this issue and came to the conclusion that Marriage is a religous ceremony. If same sex couples want to get married, then find a religion/church that will marry same sex couples. This actually works Constitutionally and it does not need government intervention. As for people who do not like the idea of same sex marriage, that is your belief and you would not want someone else infringing on your religious beliefs, so do not infringe on others religious beliefs. As for President Obama, well he needs to raise more campaign funds and this is a stunt to get those funds. We know that his followers in the Nation of Islam is totally against Gay Marriage, and Muslims in general are against gay marriage.

why do gays and lesbians have to trash the Sanctity of marriage???? what right’s under the USA constitution do I have being a U.S citizen That gays and lesbians do not.
Can anyone answer that?????????? NONE we all have the same rights under the uSA constitution regardless if you are gay or straight.

Now what I get being married that gays and lesbians do not are some federal benifits which are not rights.

See if gays would just have civil unions this would be okay I have no problem with this just don’t call them married, now gays and lesbians should be lobbying our fed govt to have them pass a law saying civil unions are afforded the same benifits as a married couple would have then everybody is happy.
gays get what they want and married couples still have marriage.

But then again that’s not what this is about. it’s about the Gays and lesbians forcing their values on everyone else.

The only reason we don’t marry our brother or sister is because of inter-breeding and the gene pool. That would not be an issue if a brother married his brother or a sister married her sister or a father married his son or a mother married her daughter or a grandfather married his………etc. If we make the first step of gay marriage than we would logically have to support all of the other described relationships.

This is clearly another Obama attempt to distract from his record and the real issues – he will continue to make statements and take positions on divisive social issues (probably once every month and a half) until the election – to keep the conversation off his record.

mark my words on this one.

Another non-issue to keep the fans flamed.

I’ve never had an issue with gay marriage, or any kind of marriage between two consenting adults. Difference between Obama and me being of course that my position has always been this position and hasn’t changed with the winds in order to appease people, as I am and have always been, in my adult life, a libertarian. We’re consistent, no matter how much it please or ****** people off. Obama on the other hand put his finger into the wind, found out he could get a lot of money from the gay community if he did this now on the cusp of the North Carolina amendment being passed, and magically he “evolved”. If he had no monetary or political use for gays, he’d throw them under the bus and back over them a few times, like he does everybody else. The man has no soul. What a schmuck.

We must conclude that the President of “evolving” positions on this issue is hopelessly intellectually challenged. There is no other explanation for his statements immediately following the decision of NC voters. Majority of voters in 29 other states, including CA, reached the same decision as NC.

Sorry to be the one to inform you. Please don’t kill the messenger! One by one the view (Christian view in large part) of who can marry whom has fallen away, and accepted by the majority. You once couldn’t marry someone outside your religion. Mostly gone. You couldn’t marry someone outside your social class (much like the caste system in India), partly gone. Within my lifetime it was actually prohibited and punishable to marry someone of a different ethnic group. That’s still frowned upon by some, but accepted by most.

Times change. You can declare yourself a fossil, and like those who opposed interracial marriage on Christian grounds if you like. You may chose to declare un-Christian a Jew marrying a Gentile and say they are condemned as lots of people before you have. But your kind are being swept away by history.

Seriously, why do you care if two people who love each other are allowed to get married?

God loves you JZS. Your consistency in piling false analogies on top of false analogies never fails to impress.
Not every change in the definition of marriage is an advance. Not every society’s definition of the institution of marriage is equally successful in producing moral and productive citizens. Not every defense of institutions as they stand represents a backward position.
Not only are your analogies false, you’ve cherry picked facts from different societies and periods on top of it, making your point arbitrary, anachronistic, and essentially fictional.
The truth is, this debate has never been about love, because no conservative or libertarian opposes the idea of any two consenting adults to love who they will. It’s not about equal rights either, because those are already guaranteed and upheld by the constitution and numerous case precedents.
Why do you find it so hard to admit that there‘s something positive for society in the very definition of marriage that’s worth defending? Why do you ignore the damage to outcomes in children in countries that have longstanding gay marriage laws? (for example: http://old.nationalreview.com/kurtz/kurtz200405250927.asp)
My guess is projection: you don’t have to examine your own meritless beliefs if you can discard others as demoded.

A little more meat for JZS,
No one cares who loves who for what reasons. Individuals have their own preferences, and conservatives understand that better than liberals. The only time conservatives mobilize politically on the issue of marriage is when a special interest group attempts to coerce the state into codifying special privileges into law. Love may be a necessary condition for marriage, and may be the sine qua non of marriage, but if you reduce marriage to love, then you’ve misdefined the very concept of marriage–love is a necessary but INSUFFICIENT condition of marriage.
But try this argument on for size: if the definition of marriage is subject to majority review, then by what rationale would you ban Jim-Crow laws? NC voters affirmed the definition of marriage in 2012 because its definition needed no defense before, was under no attack before. But the last time they voted on marriage they passed it, and it changed the definition of marriage to ban interracial marriage. By your logic, this was justified. By mine, it stands condemned as immoral.
You’re without a logical leg again–best sit down.

Marriage – from the 1828 Websters Dictionary

      n. [L.mas, maris.] The act of uniting a man and woman for life; wedlock; the legal union of a man and woman for life. Marriage is a contract both civil and religious, by which the parties engage to live together in mutual affection and fidelity, till death shall separate them. Marriage was instituted by God himself for the purpose of preventing the promiscuous intercourse of the sexes, for promoting domestic felicity, and for securing the maintenance and education of children.

Marriage is honorable in all and the bed undefiled. Heb.13.

      1. A feast made on the occasion of a marriage.

The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king, who made a marriage for his son. Matt.22.

      2. In a scriptural sense, the union between Christ and his church by the covenant of grace. Rev.19.

Yes, because gays view themselves as a unique and special class of people and when in positions of power use it to push others down and lift up only their own. Its happening right now within the Black community and the Lation community with their own leaders. The circle of racism has never been broken but it will when Christ returns.

“The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom,” the Prophet Isaiah wrote (Isaiah 3:9). Jesus said our day would be just as it was in the days of Noah, when they were “eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage” (Matthew 24:38). The problem wasn’t with the institution of marriage, it was in the manner that they were marrying and giving in marriage!

I’ve always found it funny that the same “small government conservatives” who don’t want the government telling them what to do have no problem with the government saying who can and cannot get married. (They also don’t seem to have a problem with the government mandating that doctors lie to women seeking an abortion by telling them that it can cause cancer. Guess that’s one mandate compassionate conservatives can get behind.) The good news for those who truly love freedom (as opposed to those who just say they do) is that the anti-gay marriage crowd is on the losing side of history. 50 years from now they’ll be set right alongside those who thought it was a sin for people to marry outside their race. What Cons don’t seem to have an understanding of is this: just because you don’t like something, that doesn’t mean there oughtta be a law against it. 99.9% of the anti-gay marriage crowd is made up of people who are religious zealots who wish to force THEIR beliefs on the whole nation, whether or not everyone shares those same beliefs. Kinda like the Taliban, no? As someone once said, if two gay people getting married “threatens your marriage”, then there are deep problems with your marriage that have nothing to do with gay people.

Why are they fighting so hard for something that for years they have been saying is antiquated, stifling, misogynistic, unnecessary, and so not cool? I thought couples didn’t HAVE to be married to be in loving, committed relationships. Isn‘t that what the feminists and other liberals have been bleating about since the 60’s? Why is it all of a sudden soooooooo vital for them to get married? Hmmm…….

You miss the point. The LGBT community wants a Constitutional Amendment in support of gay marriage. That is why this has become a big deal. It will embed sexual preference with the same standing in the Constitution along with race, creed and color. That has huge implications that most don’t understand.

It’s a Trojan horse that would give power to the radicals in LGBT movement to force, by Federal law, any and all institutions of faith, schools, private organization etc…..to marry gay couples, teach homosexuality in schools (as an acceptable lifestyle choice, gay rights activism or Gay History Month) whether you want you children to sit through it or not or admit gay members to a private club. This would effectively trample freedom of religion, our even your simple rights if you believe homosexuality to be improper on your own moral terms.

And you can bet that the most radical elements within the LGBT will begin to insist , and succeed, that whenever or wherever an individual or group is honored or celebrated that they be as well. I support gay civil unions and equal protection under the civil rights laws but a Constitutional Amendment is a step way too far.

State issues leave it up to the state, I could care less more improtant things for the Federal Govmt to be worried about.

My only concern is that if the gay mariage is allowed that the law be written strongly enough that churches who disagree with gay mariage do not have to recognize the mariage or preform them. IF you don’t think that they will try to force churces to do it look no further then than the Blunt amendment.

as far as morality goes i will let God judge them when their time comes, I have enough moral dilemmas of my own to worry about.

I agree if they have a civil ceremony resulting in a civil union. This will give the same benefits of marriage i.e. insurance, property rights etc. But a marriage is a religious ceremony performed under the beliefs of the particular religion of the couple getting married. I see lawsuits coming requiring Churches to marry gay’s even though this is against the beliefs of their religion. It will not be long before the Justice Dept files charges against a Priest who refuses to allow and perform a wedding in a Catholic Church for a same sex couple. The left is always screaming about separation of church and state but I bet they will be silent when the government forces churches to act against their doctrine and beliefs.

I’m sorry to say, but your side is inevitably going to lose on this issue. Seeing the protesters nowadays vehemently fight against same-sex marriage looks eerily similar to those who protested against civil rights half a century ago. Social norms change. Giving a group of people the same rights as everyone else isn’t going to cause this country to crumble. If you legitimately believe that, you are a very small-minded individual. I‘ll honestly be surprised if gay marriage isn’t nationally legalized within the next ten years. And once it is, nothing will change.

BIGAL don’t insult my intelligence. The steady campaign by the homosexual lobby in our schools is responsible for the 50/50 national numbers on homosexual marriage. As soon as that campaign (with idiocies like “bullying”) is put to an end…then that little gambit is stopped. It begins with getting rid of Obama’s Czar of safe schools, Kevin Jennings. He’s the mind behind this “bullying” campaign in schools. He’s also the founder of GLSEN a group that advocates teaching extreme sex acts to school age children.
Of course I’m not talking about ultra-liberal states like California or Oregon. They will always be lost. This “inevitablity” you cite hinges on how quickly our schools can be taken away from stleath pedophiles like Kevin Jennings and his ilk and how quickly liberalism can be shown to be the failure it is. It begins in November.

So right HKS. How can people ignore the votes of the people on this matter. Tonight, I hear three things: 1) the sadness of a nation of Christians who, though still a majority, are treated as badly as any minority ever (their votes are not counted valuable and their voices ignored); 2) our ancestors who gave up everything to create only the second nation ever based on faith in God. 3) I hear my Native American ancestors, who fell in love with Christ in the 1600′s, crying out for the land they loved.

He’s not a flip flopper. This has always been his real opinion. He merely lied about his position during the 2008 election when a clear majority of the public was still against same-sex marriage.

I agree with Chet. Obama is now withholding the fact that he is an international Marxist because a clear majority of Americans is still against Marxism/ Communism / Socialism !

On that note, the Nation of Islam and the black community are not up with the whole gay thing. Another reason Farrakan should be taken very seriously in his assination talk.

Now, Obama’s a flip flopper? Wow those Obama/Romney similarities keep becoming more and more apparent. Yes, I know Romney doesn’t eat dog, he just leaves them on the roof of the car so other can eat them.

Obama’s more than a mere flip-flopper. He‘s a regular live fish in a hot fryin’ pan! LOL

He “goes with the wind.” Reminds me a lot of John Kerry.

Obama is constantly CAMPAIGNING. Give him another group of “folks” (as he loves to call people) and he may be back to saying they should call it a “Civil Union” or that he’s against gay marriage! LOL

With Obama, one never really knows. . . (and sometimes I wonder if even Obama knows!) lol

He’s married to a “man”, so of course he approves of same sex marriage.

Does this surprise anyone…Apparently Mr. Obama doesn’t remember what he said in 2009, where he said marriage was between a man and woman…does someone need some more votes?
