Obama Says He‘s ’Proud Generally’ of Our Troops

In an interview Monday with Denver station KCNC-TV, President Obama spoke about support for U.S. troops, saying that “we‘ve got to make sure that we’re caring for our soldiers,” but followed the seemingly compassionate pledge up with a disparaging remark that appeared to dismiss and diminish America’s service men and women outright. In speaking about our troops, the president said: “You can’t help but be proud of them generally.”
The comment came on the heels of the killing of 16 Afghan civilians allegedly by an American soldier.
Obama said that Americans must make sure we’re “caring for our men and women in uniform who are serving so valiantly, and we’re caring for their families. And that‘s why we’ve actually put more resources into dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries.”
“And obviously what happened this weekend was absolutely tragic and heartbreaking. But when you look at what hundreds of thousands of our military personnel have achieved under enormous strain, you can’t help but be proud generally.”
President Obama called the episode “tragic,“ and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called it ”inexplicable.”
According to the Associated Press, Obama told a television interviewer Monday that the killings underscore the need to hand over responsibility for security to Afghans. But he said it won’t lead to an early withdrawal of U.S. troops.
Former UN Ambassador John Bolton then reacted to the president’s comments on Your World with Neil Cavuto, saying, “If that’s a direct quote from the president, I am stunned by that. He should be proud of all of the troops – period. Obviously, sometimes a tragedy like this can happen.”

As a Marine with over almost fifteen years in and having worked hand-in-hand with five of the six armed services (everyone except the Coasties AKA Puddle Jumpers), I think I have a pretty good feel for military personnel generally, so yes, I can speak as an informed source for the vast majority of people in uniform.
I wasn’t in for Reagan, but all of my senior people were, and they generally respected and loved him. I’d classify Bushes 41 & 43 as a healthy respect but not necessarily love.
Clinton annoyed us, particularly after he busted Kelly Flinn out of the Air Force in between recieving Monica’s services. Hypocrisy tends to do that. A majority of us were actually pulling for the impeachment.
In Obama’s case, he’s usually a punchline. That’s a fact. I’ve never seen a C-I-C so scorned by the troops under his command. Don’t take me the wrong way- we’ll obey his lawful orders, but we generally have very little to no respect for him and the vast majority of us will be the very first to pop the figurative cork upon his defeat in November.
Yes, there are some ******* servicemen as well, generally in the Navy (wonder why…) and National Guard, but they’re far, far, *far* outweighed by people who would love to see the end of this Administration so we can get back to sanity.

There was such a drastic differnece when Slick Clinton got elected. You could just see disciplline going down the tubes, and the military change.
You alwasy get that feeling with a lib democrat that you might get your butt hung out to dry in a time of combat (study LBJ).
When I fought in Panama under Bush 1, you knew that you were there to get the job done, and you would get the support you need. Same for the first Gulf War.
I served in Haiti under Clinton, and the rules of engagement were rediculous. You could get attacked by a mob of civilians, and if you used pepper spray, you were looking at leagal action to be taken against you.
Look at how the Rangers in Somalia did not get the equipment they needed (thanks to Clinton and Les Aspen), and affter the big fight, the US military turned around and was flying the enemy around on our aircraft.
I was in Iraq under Bush II, and once again, you new what the mission was, and that you had the support you need.
I was in Afghanistan under Obama, and it was just like the Clinton years. You feel like a pawn gettting moved around to help out a democrat. Now clear cut strategy or goals, just surge to failure. I saw boys get slaughtered day after day in the Arghandab Valley, and it was all for nothing. Obama declared Afghanistan to be the right war at the right time. Looks like you PO every veteran and active duty that posted this thread. As Commander in Chief of our military and naval forces he should never be “generally” proud of the fighting forces he commands. The behavior and actions of one soldier do not taint all soldiers.
Commissioned officers of the armed forces are constrained by the UCMJ from commenting on civilian officials. This is the Article of the UCMJ:
“ART. 88. CONTEMPT TOWARD OFFICIALS
Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.”
As a veteran and the father of a serving officer, I am disgusted by the qualifier Obama placed on the military.

Just because you know a couple that hate him doesn’t mean “everyone” hates him as likewise I‘m sure just because I know a couple that love him doesn’t mean “everyone” loves him. Stop talking in absolutes.
And on the topic of the article, I see nothing wrong with his comment. The president is not proud of everything the troops have done (and rightfully so, there are some bad apples in the US military that should be discharged). Yet, those aside – looking at only the big picture – Obama is still proud of the troops (as most Americans should be), then the correct way to say that is “I am proud in general”. AKA, Not looking at individual cases, but speaking in generalities, I am proud.
I find it humorous that the people who hate Obama most, are the same ones that are too stupid to understand the english language. I wont vote for an idiot in office, I like that my president is an educated man.

I could never say ALL soldiers going over there are heroes. Some certainly are, and I have had the privilege to serve with them, but some certainly are not and should be in jail for the things they do. I not only KNOW active duty servicemen, I know active duty servicewomen as well. And by “know” I mean I worked with some of them in the summers. I played high school Water Polo with some of them. I attained the rank of Eagle Scout in my Boy Scout troop with some of them. I have friends who have lost family members to active duty service in Iraq. I myself even applied for the Marine Corp Officer Training Program before getting into, and deciding to attend, Graduate school instead.
I may be a liberal, but what you fail to realize is that the military is full of liberals. Just because you feel a certain way and you happen to know servicemen that share your opinions does not – by any stretch of your clearly small imagination – imply that ALL servicemen (or all American citizens for that matter) share in your belief.
The sooner you realize that you’re the minority the sooner this country can begin to move forward in the direction its majority has intended. You don’t like it? Start your own country. I assure you, starting your own democracy will be an easier won battle than trying to force your ideology on the [real] American people. I wont stand for it and neither will my friends in arms.

I’m not proud of a murderer of women and children. This wasn’t even an extreme case where the women or children were really armed.
I think the best point was made by someone, likely on another site, when they mention that our own rebellion and revolutionary war was started under similar conditions of people from another land firing upon us and occupying our land.
The point is, this is their country, we need to respect their freedom too… and not kill their civilians.
Talk about a great way to ruin the hard work that has been put in by other brave men and women…

This is a direct result of his demand to change the Rules of Engagement. As a combat leader myself, and although retired, I keep in constant contact with my ex-soldiers and son-in-law that are deployed there. They all say the same thing: The greatest threat to US forces is the new ROE policy. This alone has caused the most casualties. Our troops are under threat of criminal charges if they make a simple mistake so they err on the side of caution: Their reaction time on the trigger is now too slow and they pay the ultimate price. They cannot shoot an armed insurgent if they are not aiming their weapon at them directly. They cannot return fire if the insurgents are in a building unless they have confirmed no non-combatants are inside. They are fighting with one arm and one leg tied behind their back.
The idiots (rose-ellen, Clive) that commented above regarding our soldiers being a bunch of murderers would dare not say that in my physical presence as they would never be able to speak again without serious reconstructive surgery. Yeah you have free speech, but you do not have license to slander without consequence. Yes I know you are a woman rose-ellen, but the same goes for you.

The rampage by this deranged soldier should be put into context – he does not represent our military and his actions were deplorable and not acceptable – he will be dealt with by our military justice – but do not apologize. Did Karzai apologize for the murder of our soldiers? No. State the facts, state what we are going to do but in this country do not bow and scrape for their approval – it lessens us in their eyes. Point out the hypocrisy of the Taliban – a group responsible for bombing Mosques and killing civilians – not to mention the murder and defacement of women and children – being outraged. Sooooo protected in fact that the Just-Us dept classified his massacre, as not an act of terrorism, calling that term “too incendiary”, but instead “workplace violence”. When a republican congressman called the Just-Us dept out on it, the white house mouthpiece called his statement ” extremist and anti Muslim rhetoric. I haven’t seen the troop who went on that rampage, but I‘m betting he’s both white and Christian, since he didn’t receive the same “protection” from the Mullah in the white house.
