Obama Schedules Jobs Speech for the Same Night as Next GOP Debate

The date of President Barack Obama’s much-anticipated jobs speech has been announced — and it’s the same night as the next Republican presidential debate.

According to The Hill, Obama will address a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 8 p.m., the same time GOP 2012 hopefuls will face off at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif.

“It is my intention to lay out a series of bipartisan proposals that the Congress can take immediately to continue to rebuild the American economy by strengthening small businesses, helping Americans get back to work, and putting more money in the paychecks of the Middle Class and working Americans, while still reducing our deficit and getting our fiscal house in order,” Obama said in a letter to congressional leaders requesting the joint session. “It is our responsibility to find bipartisan solutions to help grow our economy, and if we are willing to put country before party, I am confident we can do just that.”

White House press secretary Jay Carney said the speech was “of course not” purposely scheduled for the same night as the Republican debate.

“It is coincidental,” Carney said. “There are a lot of factors that go into scheduling a speech before Congress, a joint session.”

Carney added the president is not trying to overshadow the Republican field, saying “there’s one president, there’s 20-some-odd debates.”

“One debate of many that’s on one channel of many was not enough [of a] reason” to pick another date, he said.

Carney suggested NBC, which is co-hosting the debate with Politico, could consider rescheduling.

“A network could make a decision to alter the timing of the debate by an hour,” Carney said. “If the network so chose and the candidates so chose” to reschedule, “that would be completely fine with us.”

Aside from the State of the Union, the last time Obama addressed a joint session of Congress was in 2009 regarding health care. Prior to that, the last time a joint session was convened for a speech other than the State of the Union was when former President George W. Bush spoke shortly after the September 11 attacks.

Neither House Speaker John Boehner nor Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid have yet responded to the president’s request, Carney said.

      At least if we watch the GOP debate, we’re becoming more informed on a decision we each have the potential to influence.

      Allow me so that little Barry doen’t have to bother.
      His grand speech about jobs will essentially be:
      Infrastructure jobs- ie: shovel ready jobs, “stimulus”, heavily unionized.
      Green Jobs- ie: heavily tax payer subsidized, supply/technology unable to meet market demand.
      “tax the rich”- ie: Class warfare.
      Extension of payroll tax cuts for middle class.
      Education spending.
      It will be presented with lines like “let me be clear” which will be followed by opaque, under-explained spending and tax proposals that are anything but clear.
      No matter what little Barry says..there won’t be much detail to score the proposal with.
      There will be lots of Mussolini-esque chin jutting and provocations towards the Republicans.
      I will stick my neck out and say that this will be final straw for voters with Obama. The whole country (those that will actually tune in) will finally have their fill of him and his constant beating of the same Keynesian drum. Americans know his policies have failed, they’re waiting for him to deliver something credible.
      With another “green” company (Solyndra) he praised taking over 500 million in tax money and then failing will Obama change direction?..No…The scary part: He does not fold his hand, he doubles down. Watch the touting of green jobs in his labor plans to be announced next week.

      NO! This was not coincidental! This was a deliberate tactic from our Prez and his hench-men to create what he hoped would be a problem. Ha ha ha! I wouldn’t have watched anyway because you NEVER have anything to say worth listening to; it’s all lies and more lies because you are in over your head so deep, you haven‘t vaguest idea what our wonderful Country needs to get on it’s feet again after what you’ve done to us.\
      All you want to do is give stimulus money to fake businesses that end up folding anyway.       First of all he leaves his vacation 5 hours early and his wife, who evidently can’t stand to be on the same plane as him, flies in after he does and then leaves the next day. Says he needs to give his speech on Sept 7th. The day the Republicans had already planned for a debate. Either the Presidents people around him are so inept that they can‘t let him know what is going on or he is such a spoiled child that doesn’t care about as he says “trying to work with the other party.” How about also unveiling a BUDGET which has BEEN ABSENT FOR OVER 800 days.. Wonder if the President and the Mrs will travel to the House in same convoy or take two convoys to get there?

    Can only hope Boehner and McConnell see this thing for what it is, a setup to box the R’s into having to vote for it, or spend all of their time defending why they didn’t.

    If his plan was really the right thing to do he would have presented before now, and certainly would not have waited until after vacation.

      The prob is, if he has used his presidential authority to call Congress into session, then the House members (Paul, Bachman) must attend, according to the Constitution. Ergo, no real debate that night, at least not with a full showing of contenders. Unless, of course, Bachman and Paul decide to ignore Obambi and skip out on his speech.

      No one will watch his speech anyway. Maybe Joe Wilson will yell “You Lie!” again. I’d love to see that.

The economy has continued to worsen under this commie. The only bright spot we have seen was after the 2010 elections, because Americans thought a Republican congress could bring some sanity to Washington. Things were looking up for a bit until the commie in chief changed his mind yet again and declared he was going to raise taxes. The economy dove down again. Do us a favor Obama and keep your mouth shut and your head down till it’s time for you to gracefully bow out next year.

I bet the chair in the Oval Office hasn’t seen his butt more then 100 hours since he was elected. Now, the chair and bed in Air Force One probably have been worn to a frazzle. No, I don’t plan on listening to a man that is going back on TV (on all stations) to interrupt a good night of TV. He’s pushed our buttons long enough. Time for him to stand back and allow someone else a chance to make our USA a better place and repair his ignorant health care reform, etc..     The fact is always self evident that Mr Obama has usurped more power not given to his postion in the Constitution; so why should he not usurp the time slot to make his plea of desperation across to the nation.     “It is our responsibility to find bipartisan solutions to help grow our economy, and if we are willing to put country before party, I am confident we can do just that.” and by party, of course, he means Republican party. this is not a man who is willing to compromise.

      What makes me smile is the title of this topic and how it sort-of implies that nobody will watch the GOP event because Obama will be talking during the same time.
