Obama Seeks Polish Help on Arab Uprisings

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Seeking ways to support Arab uprisings, President Barack Obama is asking Polish leaders to use the lessons they learned during the fall of communism to aid fledgling democratic movements in the Middle East and North Africa.

Obama will meet Saturday with Poland’s political leaders, as well as a democracy-building team that recently returned from Tunisia, where popular uprisings led to the overthrow of a longtime autocrat and sparked the protest movements that have swept throughout the region.

The president’s overnight visit to Poland, his first stop here since taking office, caps a six-day European tour that has also taken him to Ireland, England and France. The whole trip has played out against the backdrop of the Arab rebellions, and Obama has made no efforts to underestimate the potential global impact of a democratic revolution in the Middle East and North Africa.

In the Polish capital, Obama is making a direct comparison between Poland’s overthrow of its communist regime and the movements happening in the Arab world.

The message the White House is hoping to send is that two decades after choosing democracy, Poland has a growing economy and is a strategic partner on the world stage — and the same could happen in Tunisia and Egypt, where another longtime leader has stepped down from power.

Samuel Charap, an expert on Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, said Poland also sees an opportunity to boost its international standing by taking on a consulting role in the Arab uprisings.

“Part of being a serious actor is adding value internationally, and the Poles rightly feel that they can add value on democracy promotion and democratic transition, given their own success since 1989,” he said.

Liz Sherwood-Randall, one of Obama’s top Europe policy advisers, said the key to making that happen is finding out what worked and what didn’t in the transition from communism to democracy and identifying what steps will translate well to the Arab world.

“These countries that moved along towards democracy at the end of the Cold War have great experience to share with those countries that have not yet made that transition,” she said.

Sherwood-Randall said democratic institutions in the U.S., including the nonpartisan National Democratic Institute, are already partnering with the Polish to support their efforts to engage in the Arab democracy movements.

And at the Group of Eight summit in Deauville, France, Obama and other world leaders said they hoped to provide Tunisia and Egypt, as well as other countries that follow their path, economic incentives similar to those offered to the Soviet bloc countries 20 years ago.

The G-8 leaders laid out a plan for refocusing the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which was created specifically to help Eastern European economies after the collapse of communism, to help Arab democracies.

The bank was set up when the sudden collapse of the Soviet Union convinced European leaders of the urgent need to support a region emerging from decades of political and economic dictatorship. The idea was to set up a “transition bank” to help lead the way on banking systems reform, price liberalization, privatization and establishing legal property rights in a region just shaking off the effects of almost 50 years of planned economies.

Obama arrived in Warsaw Friday night. He took part in wreath-laying ceremonies at Poland’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a memorial for those killed in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. He spoke with Holocaust survivors gathered at the site, telling one elderly man that the memorial was a “reminder of the nightmare” of the Holocaust in which 6 million Jews were killed.

The president also attended a lengthy private dinner with Central and Eastern European leaders, where aides said there was a discussion about the opportunity the Arab uprisings presented for leaders to show their support for democratic change.

Obama had first planned to come to Poland last year for the funeral of President Lech Kaczynski, who was killed in a plane crash. But Obama’s trip was scrapped six hours before his departure because of a volcanic ash cloud over Europe that disrupted air travel.

Shortly before departing Warsaw, Obama will stop at a memorial to those who died in the crash.

The president returns to Washington Saturday evening.

Please, please, please, Mr. President, just stop. Come home, get under the covers and stay there until we vote in a new President.

We cannot not take this any longer and we all promise to say really nice things about you once you are done with your one term in office; just please stop and don’t do anything else. We’ve had enough already.

The audacity of hope! I think I’m beginning to understand the way this man thinks! He is ******* off Americans with his double speak, making decisions against what the majority of people don’t want (obamamcare), when it comes to generating business–failure, look who surrounds him–thugs, thumbs his nose at us whenever possible letting us know who’s in charge (BP oil spill, Israel 1967 boarders speech, Joplin).

Now he’s over in Europe ******* off the British, the Poles, France, banging the drum that all should fork over money to support the muslims who hate anything Western! Muslims don’t want democracy! Never did, never will–they seek sharia. The only thing they want is to anhiliate all of us, Israel, America, Europe because we are the Western way of life, not the muslim way of life. They hate anything to do with Christianity/God/truth/justice/love/freedom. They support and desire to follow the way of islam/sharia/pedophilia/lies/evil/hate/bondage/murder. They will stop at nothing, nothing to get what they want and this man Soetoro/Obama/Liarinchief is there helping to set this up by ******* off the nations that will be our friends in the end days to help us out to fight the war of wars. Beware!

BTW, I would wager that ther will be a whole lot less time spent in MO, than getting there. Gosh, I wonder what the photo op will be. . . I can see the buses of enthusiastic supporters being loaded, going to a location to be rallied, showing the respect and awe that, no doubt, the government is earning again!

I hope the Polish leaders still remember that this is the SAME Obama who yanked the European missile shield. The fact that it was announced on the anniversary of the Russians invading Poland should be a huge clue to this President’s agenda. They have a lot of nerve calling this “Arab Spring” a democratic uprising. I guess you would consider what is happening in places like Venezuela, as a democratic uprising. (Garbage in…garbage out).

History is always something that happened in the past. Present day people never seem to learn the lessons of the past.

Obama is trying to get the Polish people to help him establish the Moslem brotherhood’s version of Islamo-Facism in the Arab controlled sector of the world. This, just like Htiler‘s Naziism or Mao and Stalin’s version of Communism, will be forced on the world’s population by FORCE. If you think Nazi death camps or Russia’s Gulags were bad, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

I hope the Poles and the rest of Europe will soon see through the ****** in Chief’s plan to aid and abet the spread of this infectious disease (Islam) to the entire world and will stop its spread, using any means necessary.

Are you kidding me? Amazing how deep this man’s narcissism runs. I say the Poles should put him back on Air Force One immediately so he’s not late for his photo op in Joplin. Poland has been friends with the USA for the longest time. Did you know it was a Polish King that stopped Muslims from taking over Europe and then pushed them back into the Middle East. Poland sent generals to the USA during the revolutionary war when we had nobody with military experience to train troops. Did know a Polish General designed West Point.

Would any of you be brave enough to fight for your country to the death like they did in WWII. Would you charge tanks on horse back to be free. I doubt it. Even after WWII when the USA turned it’s back on Poland and allowed the USSR to control Eastern Europe, Poland was still our friend. Please read your history before insulting a country that has been our friend even when we were not that good of a friend to them.

there is a reason that a radical regime is always in power in muslim nations…

its the only way to control people who think everything needs punishment by death

democracy is a mistake in muslim nations.. mark my words, the world will rue the day it thought arab muslims could have free reign over issues

the leaders of muslim countries, as harmful and tyrannous as they seem, are always the most moderate of all the citizens, the least extreme, even going so far as to adopt western lifestyles..

its the way it has been in the arab world for thousands of years , and they know its the only way rule of law and government works

    democracy is not a fix-all..

its like having a democracy in a federal penitentiary, run and controlled by the inmates..

Democracy in a Muslim world lasts through on election or ratification of a constitution – they hand the government over to the Imam’s who allow a dictator, like Ahmdenijab (sp?) to rule – as long as he stays under their thumb. As soon as we are truly gone from Iraq and Afghanistan – watch and see what happens to the so called democracy.

When Obama said at the podium, paraphrasing now, that one of the many Central European presidents came up to him and said “no one believed we could have a democracy. No one believed we could do it. Now, we want to help you with the Arab Spring because we believe they, too, can achieve the democracy we have,” the first words out of my mouth were, “LIAR!” Obama’s inexplicable need for all this equivalence is nauseating. Central Europe had no goal to exterminate Israel and all her inhabitants. Central Europe didn‘t see America as the ’Great Satan”. Central Europe does not teach their children to hate Jews and Americans. There’s a whole helluva lotta difference between one and the other. Why Obama continues to prop up and support the Muslim Brotherhood, along with the American left, is beyond ration and reason.

Jeszcze Polska nie umarla, Kiedy my zyjemy!

And NO, I didnot err on the first part too, because that was the original text of Dambrowsky, not the later revision.

Don’t fulfill a stereotype, Poland! Tell the man-child, Obama, to take a hike.

We’re trying to get our elected officials here to try him for treason for violating our Constitution.

      @Republicorp:

      How about adding this:

Mr Obama (self annointed one): “You will help these people…NOW!!!”
      (Poland: “no.”
      (World: “No.”
(Obama- here we go again, mega sigh.

What we need to focus on is the story of Bahrain lately, the troops of the Saudi Arabia are apperantly to be reinforced with troops from other Muslum lands shortly, to keep the influence of Iran at bay.

Something is not right here. Why would the Poles join opinions and efforts with the Russians, who are trying to become the world’s superior power as evidenced through the recent anti-missile treaty,

The time is coming that the American people will have to stand as our forefathers told us is our duty against this government. The G-8 committment of assistance is 20 billion dollars of which close to 1/5 will be provided by the United States is just another example of many that our government is not concerned with serving the American people. It is time for this government to focus on saving this country and lessen it’s focus on globalization… If it continues is refusal to deal with the domestic crisis it has created at home in our economy and our border states, then it is no longer serving the Amercian interest and we as a people the right but are duty bound to make changes… I am sick and tired of our government sending the best amoung us off to be killed and mamed in the name of freedom, while they destroy the very freedoms at home that they would have us believe that we are fighting for abroad. I don‘t know if anybody caught Obama’s slip in his Polish address this morning but he actually said that The United States does not want energy independence… maybe he mispoke but I think it more likely that it was a Freudian slip. The Federal Government’s focus at this point in our history is Global, it is hardly focused on our domestic crisis, I don’t know what role they see the US playing in their view of the future, but I can guess that most Americans would not approve.

@Amy, Don’t forget, many pro American government and high ranking military officials including the Polish President Lech Kaczynski. his wife and 88 officials were killed in a plane crash in Russia little over a year ago. Kaczynski was a good friend to the Jewish community, supported the missile defense facility and wanted to clean up the corruption and left over communist era officials in Poland politics and business. Kaczynski was disappointed about the loss of the defense shield but hoped the US would offer Poland other forms of a “strategic partnership.”

Not really thinking an arab spring stragegic partnership was what Kaczynski had in mind. Agree something is not right.

      A lot.
I wonder why the above bit omitted a most salient point……that Lech Walesa blew off Obama.
Now there is someone who actually deserved their Nobel Peace Prize.
      Obama is a fool.

WARSAW, Poland Poland’s former president and Solidarity founder Lech Walesa says he has turned down an invitation to meet with President Barack Obama because it doesn’t fit into his schedule.
Walesa’s aide Piotr Gulczynski told The Associated Press that Walesa will not meet Obama because he had previous plans to attend a biblical festival in Italy and is looking forward to meeting with young people who will be there.
Walesa had been invited by Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski to attend a gathering of Poland’s leading political figures with Obama in Warsaw on Saturday.
The 67-year-old Walesa said on TVN24 Friday that the timing of the meeting with Obama “does not suit me.”

“Fledgling democratic movements in the Middle East and North Africa”

Yeah, and the moon is purple with yellow polka dots. Smart people know these are Islamic Sharia movements and they have nothing to do with democracy. “Islamic democracy” is an oxymoron.

I wonder if Obama will ever wake up to the fact that the “democratic movements” he keeps talking about have shown very little democratic intent. The people rose up in the hopes of acquiring freedom but the leadership of these movements keep talking about restoring Islamic values, otherwise known as Sharia Law.Support should not be given to any of these movements until they show us they are willing to form governments that will take their place as responsible members of the community of world nations. Look at Egypt. They are already taking the steps that show an inclination to become an ally of Iran and to thumb their nose at the US and Europe.

Obama is all over the place stirring the pot and recalling democracy “wins” for other countries. Just as Hitler did, Bait and Switch.
What a chip Obama has on his shoulder regarding past mistakes of other countries.
This guy is angry and does not have a forgiving bone in his body.
It’s all about the Caliphate ( His New World Order) and FEMA concentration camps for the USA. Research it ALL for yourselves.
There are locations all over the US under construction. This is scary.
Remember, we need to question the GOP candidate can they stand up to the Federal Reserve and the New World Order. Forget all this PC distraction.
Open your mind to this. It’s hard to believe. But this is in the works.
