President Obama has a message for Saudi King Abdullah: Get well soon.
Politico reports Obama sent the message to the Abdullah via a hand-delivered note from Vice President Joe Biden. Abdullah is currently recovering in New York City after several rounds of back surgery.
The unannounced trip was revealed after-the-fact by a White House press release:
Earlier today, Vice President Biden made an unannounced visit to the hospital in New York City where Saudi King Abdullah is recuperating from surgery. The Vice President was received by King Abdullah’s family, including his son Prince Miteb bin Abdullah. During his visit with King Abdullah’s family, the Vice President delivered a personal letter from President Obama for the King, wishing him a speedy recovery.

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 9:32am@ Ghost, The White House returned the bust of Churchill as it was scheduled to do at the end of the Bush term. President Obama received a pen holder made from wood of the HMS Resolute, and placed it on the Resolute desk. President Obama did bow to the Saudi King, but he didn’t kiss their faces and hold their hands like President Bush did. He doesn’t consider himself a “member of the family” as the Bushes do. And he didn’t make secret arrangements to go flying Bin Laden family members out of the country after 9/11/ And a Saudi Prince is one of the largest investors at Fox News, which means that a large portion of Glenn’s $2 million a year salary is backed by a Saudi investor, and it does come from the investors, since Glenn’s words and actions have cost him so many ad sponsors. Yes, indeed, we do know men by their actions. What do your lies by omission and distortions say about you?

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 9:43amWell Rose, let’s see. Here’s what the Telegraph had to say (the Telegraph is a U.K. source, you know):
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/barackobama/4623148/Barack-Obama-sends-bust-of-Winston-Churchill-on-its-way-back-to-Britain.html
“A bust of the former prime minister once voted the greatest Briton in history, which was loaned to George W Bush from the Government’s art collection after the September 11 attacks, has now been formally handed back.
The bronze by Sir Jacob Epstein, worth hundreds of thousands of pounds if it were ever sold on the open market, enjoyed pride of place in the Oval Office during President Bush’s tenure.
But when British officials offered to let Mr Obama to hang onto the bust for a further four years, the White House said: “Thanks, but no thanks.“ ”
So, apparently, it wasn’t supposed to be just shipped back, it was a loan with what appears to be an indefinite term. The Brits then offered to let Obama hang onto it, and he rejected it.
How funny is that, Rose? You wanted to call me a liar, but apparently YOU didn’t know the full story. While I’d expect an apology from an honest person, since you came in without facts and with guns blazing, I can only assume that you have an agenda that is not served by honor.

Like Rupert Murdoch’s publications, The Daily Telegraph is an official propaganda device of the Conservative party in the U.K. And just because the President chose not to accept the continued loan of the bust of Churchill doesn’t mean that he snubbed tthe British. He sits at the Resolute desk and looks at the Resolute pen holder every day. I am quite sure he is very aware of our British allies.

**@Ghost, you do realize that the Telegraph is a tabuloid with as credible a reputation as The Washington Times…which is to say, it’s perfect for parakeets, cats, and dogs? Like Rupert Murdoch’s publications, The Daily Telegraph is an official propaganda device of the Conservative party in the U.K. And just because the President chose not to accept the continued loan of the bust of Churchill doesn’t mean that he snubbed tthe British. He sits at the Resolute desk and looks at the Resolute pen holder every day. I am quite sure he is very aware of our British allies.**
This is called attacking the source. The official term for the fallacy is Appeal To Motive. In this case, you claim that the actual facts are wrong, because you question the motive of the Telegraph. However, it should be noted that if the Telegraph had misquoted the government of Britain, they would
be held to charges of libel.
Here, from the Times (another U.K. source), just prior to Barry rejecting the offer:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article5622197.ece
“However, a spokesman for the British Embassy in Washington said yesterday: “We have made it clear that we would be pleased to extend the loan should Mr Obama so wish.” He added that no response had been received; yesterday the White House declined to comment.”
So now we have two distinct sources, citing exactly the same information. Additionally, you can find this exact play of events reported by countless sources. You are hoping to defeat the argument by destroying the character of the source. But fact is, if somebody says that the sky is blue, and you look outside and it is blue, it doesn’t matter the source that told you that it was blue. Facts are stubborn things.
And fact is Rose, it happened. You, therefore, are without the facts and wish simply to be seen as right at all costs and will blither on I suspect trying your best to either ad hominem or question the source or otherwise misdirect rather than say “yeah, ok, that’s right, my bad”. A word of caution, the failure to admit error is the largest glaring weakness of the Left. I’ll use it against you and your comrades at every opportunity. With glee. ;)
**@The American, slavery was outlawed by the Thirteenth Amendment, ratified in December of 1865. I do not belong to Mrs. Huffington, I was not “owned” by Ghost, either. **
Inconsistent comparison. Logic rejected.
**Yes, I do have a user registry at HuffPo, but I haven’t posted there in months, and haven’t visited in a couple of weeks. I write for myself, research for myself, and am perfectly capable of thinking for myself, **
And yet you write only the talking points of the Left.
**I don’t need to post Conservative talking points as my own. Oh, and in case you didn’t notice, he only posted the one piece of information from a biased source, he didn’t address any of the other points I raised. Ooooh, gosh, you’ve been shown the error. You’re entitled to your opinions, but not your facts Rose.
It really stung you that somebody said that you‘d been proven wrong didn’t it? You’ve devoted an entire post to showing your thinly suppressed anger. The inability to admit error leaves one in a rather sad quandary, pitting both reality and narcissism against each other in the psyche Rose. I strongly encourage you to consider, for once, not fall back on standard Alinsky and instead act as an honest broker without regard to ideology.

**@Kate, my response is that none of you were whining about Saudi connection to Republicans and they only became indicative of something bad when they were to Obama, a Democrat. **
Oh? And you can back this up with what Rose? The Blaze wasn’t around when Shrub was President, and I doubt you met any of us prior to the Blaze, so it seems that you have no way AT ALL of knowing what those of us here, the “you” you specified, were or were not doing. Your statement therefor fails for lack of verifiable proof, and is rejected as being an emotional plea trying to assert truth based on nothing but conjecture.
And frankly, you clearly do not understand the current movement in this nation, as evidenced by your need to connect it to old school GOP and fall back on all the same old tired Leftist rhetoric. Many here reject a lot of what the GOP has done in the past, openly. I see it daily.
And for your contemplation, I was in fact lambasting Dubya for buddying up to Saudis years ago, and have no love for the man today.

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 8:55pm@Ghost, I have no doubt that the White House declined the extension of loan of the bust, what I dispute is that it was a snub, which is what YOU alleged. My point about The Daily Telegraph is that it is biased towards the conservative side and likely to slant things to put liberals in the worst light. Your alternate source is a Murdoch publication, another Conservative policy organ with an extended track record of putting Liberals, and Obama in particular, in a bad light. And sometimes, attacking a source is the correct thing to do, because the source has questionable motives and those motives need to be exposed. What was that about opinions and facts and admitting they might be wrong about something?
Correct, The Blaze wasn’t around during the Bush Administration, but Fox News was, and they never questioned Bush’s connections to Saudis. The Right doesn‘t question Murdoch’s connections to the Saudis. And as far as that goes, if Glenn is taking money from a Saudi backed source, his tactic of guilt by association could be used on him, what are Glenn’s connections to the Saudis? Do I know any of you, no. Do I know what any of you were doing at 9/11, no. But I do know that the Right supported Bush and condemned any questioning or objections to anything he did as unpatriotic and anti-American. You may not have done it personally, but as a group, that was and is, the general tone of the Right towards the Left.
You tell me that my logic is rejected because I pointed out that slavery, the ownership of people, was outlawed. No one owns me. I am my own person, I was a Liberal when Arianna Huffington was married to Mr. Huffington and espousing Conservative talking points. I’ve been a Liberal and arguing for Liberal positions since I was 10 years old. Why do I feel the need to connect the Tea people to the GOP, could it be that it’s been shown in multiple surveys that the Tea Partiers and Republicans overlap nearly completely? A survey also showed that 11% of the Tea movement rejects Obama because of race, by their own admission. I do understand what is going on in this country. And I don’t like it. I want to be free to express my view points and to have Liberal ideals form policy in this country. Here is a fact, Liberals make up somewhere between 15-20% of the population. It is almost the same percentage of the population as the Rightwingers. I have spent most of my life keeping a stiff upper lip while people have grown increasingly Conservative and quarrelsome and have tried to suppress Liberals in any way possible. And all this while Conservative policies ruined the manufacturing base and the economy, and left real wages of working Americans flat while the wealth of the top 2% increased by nearly 500%. That just isn’t a Liberal talking point, that is fact. Check it out for yourself.
Now, let’s address your last paragraph, reproduced here for convenience:
” It really stung you that somebody said that you‘d been proven wrong didn’t it? You’ve devoted an entire post to showing your thinly suppressed anger. The inability to admit error leaves one in a rather sad quandary, pitting both reality and narcissism against each other in the psyche Rose. I strongly encourage you to consider, for once, not fall back on standard Alinsky and instead act as an honest broker without regard to ideology.”
Okay, I’ll admit, I’m in a quandry. It was really hard to suppress the amusement I felt at the absurd pretention of your preposterous armchair psychology. No, dear, I wasn’t angry, thinly suppressed or otherwise. I was merely pointing out facts. Why do Conservative always insist that Liberals are angry? By the way, I reject your conclusion that I was proven wrong, maybe you see it that way, but I don’t. Here’s another fact, from Wikipedia (for copywrite considerations, and convenience) “Narcissism is the personality trait of egotism, vanity, conceit, or simple selfishness.” Are you perhaps projecting? You don’t know me, so you really can’t say whether I am vain or selfish. I could tell you that I wasn’t, but then you can’t verify that by talking to anyone who would, and you probably wouldn’t believe it any way. I will say that I have a reputation among my co-workers as being honest and plainspoken. I am also quite willing to admit when I am wrong. You are free to reject that, and I am sure that you will.
I just love the remark about Alinsky! What is it with you Rightwingers and that dead guy? I had very, very Liberal teachers when I was in high school (my parents hated the men in the History department in my high school; they falsely blamed them for my being a Liberal). I also earned a degree in History (modern American) in 1983, many of my professors were Liberal. Honestly, I NEVER heard of Alinsky until late 2008 when he became the bete noir of Fox News and the source of all evil in the Democratic party. I’ve never spoken to a Liberal who has even mentioned his name even in passing. How can I possibly be following “standard Alinsky” when I don’t even know what it is? Yes, I have heard you Rightwingers rattle on about “The Rules for Radicals”, but I wouldn’t recognize them if I tripped on them.
My most recent sources of information on what’s going on in America: Kevin Phillips, Andrew Bacevich, James K. Galbraith, Bill Moyers, David McCullough, David Holmes, and Thomas Frank. None of these men have influence in government. They don’t spout left wing talking points. They present ideas and facts and allow the reader/listener to draw their own conclusions. You might try that sometime, drawing your own conclusions, I mean, and thinking for yourself. And it you want to indulge in amaturish armchair psychobabble, try looking in the mirror. If you can’t manage to understand yourself, maybe you should pass on assessing others. (Oh, and so my opinions and motives are completely clear.) I am not angry; bemused or flummoxed, probably, but angry, no. I will leave that to your lot.
