Obama Supporter Matt Damon Admits: I’m No Longer a Fan

In an interview set to air tonight on CNN, Obama supporter and actor Matt Damon admitted he has had a change of heart when it comes to the president. According to Damon, Obama hasn’t come through on his promises.

Piers Morgan pointedly asked Damon, who campaigned for Obama in 2008, if Damon was happy with Obama and still a fan. Damon responded, “No. No. I really think he misinterpreted his mandate.” He went on to quote a friend who said, “I no longer hope for audacity.”

While the clip doesn’t show it, a story on CNN’s website says Damon went on to criticize Obama for his State of the Union speech:

“In his State of the Union he didn‘t even say the word ’poverty,’ ” said Damon. “You’ve got millions of people languishing in it.” Damon, who backed the Obama campaign in 2008, said he appreciates that the president is a “deep thinker.” The actor called Obama brilliant, but said he “definitely wanted more.”

Some, such as Mediaite’s Alex Alvarez, will wonder why Damon would even be questioned about his political views. He’s an actor, after all. That’s a valid point.* But considering Damon’s ardent support for Obama in the past, I’m glad it was a topic of conversation — especially since Hollywood was so lovestruck by Obama in 2008. It‘s good to know if that’s still the case.

Damon’s new comments, no doubt, will make many conservatives smile. After Obama’s election, many predicted the new president had overpromised and would underdeliver. It seems that some on the left are starting to think so, too.

*It should be noted that Damon was on set to promote his new movie “The Adjustment Bureau.” Still, his political views did come up, including his thoughts on the war in Afghanistan.

Oh yes, and I‘m sure they’d love the fact that they no longer have free speech . . of any kind. Having your neighbors rat on you for real, and for trumped up reasons would go a long way also. Actually, since I’ve been reading this post, I have to agree with you NPA. Many progressives are upset that he has not been nearly progressive enough. He has called for redistribution of wealth (you know, “spread it around”), but that hasn’t happened completely – I find myself STILL making more than others, less than others. He wanted the borders completely open, and while he tried to get AZ to stop enforcing Immigration laws through the DOJ, he wasn’t completely successful there, either. And, while he’s talked big about electricity “necessarily skyrocketing,” my rates have barely gone up. Yes, if I were Matt Damon, I’d be pretty upset, too.

I think it had everything to do with race. He is a very well spoken young man with alot of charisma. The uninformed and emotional voters on the left refused to see him for the socialist that he is because they have all this pent up guilt about slavery in America, even though they had nothing to do with it. Too bad our first black president has to be such a failure, it would have been great if he could find a position of fiscal responsibility and moral conscience to lead this country. Instead he acts like a person who has won the lottery and now doesn’t know what to do with his newly found position.

I think that is the issue Matt has with Obama. He like a lot of people that support social justice (aka socialism) are not happy with Obama because they don’t feel he has done enough. Note how Matt says he didn‘t even like Obama’s acceptance speech because he never once used the word poverty when we have millions languishing in it. So Matt probably feels that Obama has not done enough to spread the wealth around.

Obama brilliant? He is simply a Broadcast News Anchor…Remove his teleprompter/earpiece and he is an empty suit at best who hid his true identity from most of America pre-election thanks to a willing Progressive media. When Hillary was still in the hunt, there was a photo on CNN with Obama barefoot in Kenya with clothes in a pillowcase over his shoulder appearing in age to be around 18-20ish. I am sure the Clintons were likely floating it for an edge. It was shown a couple times and never surfaced again when it appeared Obama was pulling ahead. The mainstream media let you see the propaganda that they want you to see.

I have this funny thing, where I refuse to support people who are so far left they can’t see straight. I say why watch awards when I don’t know who the heck these people are anyway. Never dreamed I’d become my mother (who never knew the current movie starzs) and I’d laugh at her. This is me now. ha
But I do find it interesting the people are speaking out about the disappointment Obama has been. As for being brilliant, give me a break. He’s well learned in the Allinsky school, period. No common sense in him. Arrogance is his best ability.

Ridiculous, in less than two years the man has done more to destroy the American Revolution than any other politician in our history. Don’t be duped by this media blitz! Matt Damon is hardly a moron or a socialist. He was an honors student during his first year at Harvard College, and he is not calling for socialist policies out of the White House. He has specifically called for an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which are not winnable, as well as the closing of Guantanamo, which offends our civil liberties and philosophies on individual rights. He also wants to see more progressive taxation rules, since the rich pay lower rates than the middle class. He also wants to see legalization of gay marriage, since it clearly is an equal protection under the law issue. I happen to agree with him on all of these points, but none of them make him or me a socialist. People around here throw that word around without an understanding of what it means. And it makes it tough to take seriously claims that Harvard-accepted Damon is a moron when at least he (unlike many here) knows how to use that term…

By the way, the rich have the highest tax rates, there are just have a ton of loop holes and write offs so if they spend their money thinking that from a write off/loop hole perspective, they indeed can get off paying less taxes than the middle class.

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
      By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “If you don’t work you die.”

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man,

That the dog returns to his vomit and the sow returns to her mice,
and the burnt fool’s bandaged finger goes wobbling back to the fire-

And that after this is accomplished and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins.

“He also wants to see more progressive taxation rules, since the rich pay lower rates than the middle class.”

In a free society, for tax purposes “upper” and “middle class” are arbitrary distinctions, since anyone can work to earn or create capital. No one is keeping anyone down except the normal market forces that act on everyone.

If you would like to be charitable to someone, then do so out of your own pocket, since everything you work for belongs to you, just like everything the rich and the poor alike work for belong to them.

“He also wants to see legalization of gay marriage, since it clearly is an equal protection under the law issue.”

Actually, gays have to claim to be UNEQUAL in order for them to claim this supposed right. It’s precisely because they are equal to straights that the same rule applies to them: that two heterosexual men or women cannot marry each other because the definition of marriage entails 1 man’s relationship to 1 woman.

But in their claim to be unequal to straights (a separate “class” of human), they actually reveal that it’s simply their preferences that place them into a supposed separate class; And in that their claim to the right to redefine marriage is based on a preference, they cannot then claim to be a separate “class”. We all have our preferences, but that does not make us significantly different than one another.

Against the obvious complementary aspects, both physical and psychological, of men to women, homosexuals expect others to accommodate them.

Straights and gays are not significantly different, and in fact, in the very identity of a homosexual resides proof that they are actually seeking acceptance AS their own gender. That is, they KNOW they are different than the opposite sex in a psychologically different way.

If they are so concerned with the poor, the homeless, taxing the rich, why don’t they put their money where their mouths are and donate some of their millions to the cause of their choice? And while they’re at it they could sell some of the mansions and expensive cars and live like they want us to live. Being rich and famous doesn’t make them any smarter or wiser than an average Joe like me. If you listen to what comes out of their mouths it’s pretty evident they live in the fantasy world in which they act.

“Why ask anyone, why talk about it to anyone? You’re just a reporter. You’re just a business owner. You’re just a painter. You’re just a (insert job other than politician here).”

The point of the question is not to set apart actors as uniquely unqualified to talk about politics. The point is to caution against equating the ubiquitous nature of being an actor to the ubiquitous nature of commonly referenced sources of knowledge (dictionaries, encyclopedias, professors).

In other words, yes, an actor is entitled to speak his mind like everyone else, and may in fact have knowledge or experiences comparable to commonly referenced sources. But what is it about someone being an actor that seems to elicit careful attention to their words?

That’s the reason the question is important to ask.

JGP and IChoose, I assume nothing. I was Damon’s classmate and suitemate at college until he later dropped out, so I know how smart he is and whether he subscribed to socialist ideas.

      A Doctor’s Labor,

“In a free society, for tax purposes “upper” and “middle class” are arbitrary distinctions, since anyone can work to earn or create capital. No one is keeping anyone down except the normal market forces that act on everyone.”

Wrong. They are not arbitrary distinctions in the sense that you mean. Social mobility in the US has fallen so much that Western Europeans are now much more likely to reach a higher socio-economic level than their parents, as multiple studies have shown. But in any case, this country has supported a progressive tax structure for individual income since the invention of the income tax, so putting the top 30% or 3% in progressively higher brackets is a long-standing practice in the US, as it is in most countries around the world. It also comports with basic economic theory that holds that there is declining marginal utility in each additional dollar earned.

“If you would like to be charitable to someone, then do so out of your own pocket, since everything you work for belongs to you, just like everything the rich and the poor alike work for belong to them.”

Charity and taxes are two different things, and people should stop confusing the two. Taxes pay for government services that we have democratically decided as a society to provide and to pay for in differing degrees depending, not upon how frequently we use them, but on the basis of how well placed we are to pay for them. These services can include work that charities also promote (e.g., public health, education, etc.). But the vast majority of public dollars go toward systems that we collectively want to be covered by government rather than non-profits or for-profit entities. The groups here that maintain otherwise, are not in the majority, and countless polls have shown as much.

“Actually, gays have to claim to be UNEQUAL in order for them to claim this supposed right. It’s precisely because they are equal to straights that the same rule applies to them: that two heterosexual men or women cannot marry each other because the definition of marriage entails 1 man’s relationship to 1 woman.”

I think you are playing semantic games or confusing yourself. No interpretation of the Equal Protection Clause demands that the suspect class in question must be equal in the sense that you mean. Jews don’t have to be equal to Christians to claim that one cannot write a law stating that you have to be baptized a Christian to drive a car. Such a law would violate the EPC even as people would continue to maintain that Jewish does not equal Christian. Similarly, no one needs to claim that homosexual equals heterosexual to argue that anti-gay rules, such as an unnecessary requirement that marriage only apply to heterosexual couples, are also disallowed under the EPC. Of course, the Supreme Court has yet to rule on this case, but it would have to invent a non-existent harm that offends state interest in order to reach a conclusion upholding gay marriage bans. This is not based upon my personal morality, but merely an expression of the legal analysis that is done in all cases invoking the EPC.

“But in their claim to be unequal to straights (a separate “class” of human), they actually reveal that it’s simply their preferences that place them into a supposed separate class; And in that their claim to the right to redefine marriage is based on a preference, they cannot then claim to be a separate “class”. We all have our preferences, but that does not make us significantly different than one another.”

You don’t really understand how the analysis works. For the purposes of EPC, you have to determine whether a so-called “suspect class” is being treated unequally in a way that is not allowable under the Constitution. You are trying to take specialized words with a particular legal meaning and translate them into common parlance to make unsubstantiated claims about the intentions of gay people. This is foolish and deceptive.

“Against the obvious complementary aspects, both physical and psychological, of men to women, homosexuals expect others to accommodate them.”

There is little obvious about those aspects to gay people, who find same-sex partners highly complementary. And this is not about accommodating anybody. It is about treating everyone the same, unless a compelling state interest (i.e., avoiding a major harm) requires something different. Because no harm or state interest has been shown, it is unlikely that anti-gay laws will pass Constitutional muster. This is especially true as increasing scientific evidence has shown that homosexuality is highly controlled by genetics outside the control of the individual.

“Straights and gays are not significantly different, and in fact, in the very identity of a homosexual resides proof that they are actually seeking acceptance AS their own gender. That is, they KNOW they are different than the opposite sex in a psychologically different way. See here: The Meaning of Same-Sex Attraction, http://www.narth.com/docs/niconew.html

With all due respect to Dr. Nicolosi, homosexuality is no longer considered a psychological illness according to the American Psychiatric Association, whose authoritative DSM sets the clinical standards for what is and what is not a mental illness. If you are claiming otherwise, that is your right. However, you are outside of the mainstream and will not find support in US courts for such claims.
