President Takes a Dig at Romneys Upbringing, Suggest Familys Wealth Makes Him an Out Of Touch Elitist

President Obama on Tuesday suggested that Mitt Romney doesn’t understand the plight of the average college student because, unlike most students, the former Massachusetts governor comes from a wealthy and privileged family.

“When a high school student in Youngstown asked him what he would do to make college more affordable for families like his, Governor Romney didn’t say anything about grants or loan programs that are critical to millions of students to get a college education; nothing about work-study programs, or rising college tuition; he didn’t say a word about community colleges, or how important higher education is to America’s economic future,” the president said during a campaign stop at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. “He said the best thing you can do is shop around.”

Obviously, the president feels Romney’s “shop around” reply was wholly unsatisfactory.

“That’s it — that’s his plan. That’s his answer to young people who are trying to figure out to go to college and make sure they don’t have a mountain of debt — shop around and borrow money from your parents,” President Obama repeated.

“Not everybody has parents who have the money to lend [emphasis ours],” he added.

But let’s go back for a moment and inspect the president’s anecdote about Romney and the high school you student. You see, it’s not entirely accurate.

At the aforementioned rally in Youngstown, Ohio, the supposed high school student said the following [emphasis added]:

I just started law school [some high school, right?], and they’re doing away with unsubsidized loans for grad students, which makes it almost impossible to pay off our debts, have a house, have a car, have a family before we retire. What are you going to do for people like me?

“You know, I wish I could tell you that there‘s a place to find really cheap money or free money and we could pay for everyone’s education. That’s just not going to happen,” Romney replied. “I would like to have more competition between schools. I hope you shopped around and tried to find a school that has the lowest possible tuition.”

First, is that so unreasonable? Second, it should be noted that Romney is not the first to argue for more competition in education.

Nevertheless, and despite possibly having his anecdotes mixed up, the president soldiered on, making the case for more government investment in education and infrastructure.

“I am only standing before you today because of the chance my education gave me,” the president said. “So I can tell you with some experience that making higher education more affordable for our young people is something I’ve got a personal stake in … I say this because putting a college education within reach for working families just doesn’t seem to be a big priority for my opponent.”

The Romney campaign was quick to respond and accused the Obama administration of being the opposite of helpful to college students.

“Just yesterday, President Obama told struggling college graduates to look at his ‘track record,’ but under this president, too many young Americans are suffering from higher college costs, more debt, and a lack of good jobs when they graduate,” said Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg in a statement.

“Today’s policies are just more of the same from a president who hasn’t fixed the economy or kept his promises to the young people who supported him four years ago. The Romney-Ryan plan will deliver 12 million new jobs to help recent graduates — and all Americans — enjoy a more prosperous future,” she added.

      They are both “out of touch”. We all know Obama’s sketchy past. But Mitt Romney was able to go to school wherever he pleased. Remember, Ann said that when money dried up, they just sold some stock…Does that sound like a normal college experience? Remember when Mitt said that graduates should just “borrow some money” from their parents to start a business?

      Did you know that Romney got two degrees at the same time? Did you know that Romney gave away to charity what his dad gave him as an inheritance? Did you know that Romney took no salary as Governor of Massachusetts? Did you know he volunteered as a missionary in France? Did you know that Obama went on a foreign student loan and then claimed to be a natural born citizen? Did you know Obama’s grandma was a rich banker who raised him? Who’s out of touch?

      You asked for more real time updates, so thought you might like to know the following. If you haven’t seen it yet, president staged a surprise visit to the WHpc today. WH handlers had made contact with at least three members of media beforehand. They wanted to ensure question on the Akin rape comments was asked. Prepared notes for response by president were rehearsed. The moment was to provide campaign with a “soundbite backdrop” to fire up the war on women tactic they believe provided a bump in the polls couple months back. This kind of thing isn’t new. Pretty common with administrations to have some media folks they can cherry pick during a p.c.

      @WantOurCountryBack, This is a pet peeve of mine. Draft dodger Clinton sent me back to Iraq and Yugoslavia then signed the Brady Bill. Romney dodged the draft, and is talking tough about sending our boys into another BS war in the Middle East, while supporting the NDAA, Patriot Act, HR347, etc. He‘s out of touch because he doesn’t understand our suffering and the suffering we cause people that haven’t done anything to us. Nor does he understand how seriously we take our oath to defend the Constitution. Yes this does make me angry. Maybe I’ll be able to let it go if peace makes the nightmares go away. His sons could have fought too, but that’s only for poor unimportant people.

      Yeah and what Romey said was what needs to happen. As long as the Gov’t is keeps getting involved the more the price skyrockets. I have two kids in college, one wanted to be a doctor but is now going to become a Physician Assistant and the other is going into the IT business. Both have worked hard to have promising futures but no one is giving them anything. We are not rich and live paycheck to paycheck but according to the Gov’t we make too much money for my kids to get subsidised loans. I’m not trying to complain but the cost went up $4000 per student just since last year. The Gov’t is the problem FREE MARKETS is the solution.

      @Time2, Yeah, I volunteered and tried to reenlist when they hit those towers. It didn’t bug me so much when I was younger. I didn’t understand why we were protecting Muslims from Christians, but that was short-lived until we were back in Iraq. (Red Sea) I don‘t mind serving if it’s to protect our national security or our freedom. I’d do that again in a heartbeat. But Iraq and Yugoslavia weren’t about that now, were they? I didn‘t realize it was for BS until after I’d been out for several years. TBH, I was a huge Neocon like you until we went back into Iraq and the politicians started crapping on the Bill of Rights.

      I already knew the answer to the question regarding your enlistment but wanted to drive home a point. You are of course welcome to your viewpoints (especially as a Vet), but those of us who also “volunteered” for our Military (to honorably “serve” our country and her “interests”) and who may not quite feel the same as you OR Ron Paul (a draftee) feel insulted and slighted by the constant anti-war… and YES… anti-Military drumbeats of todays’ Ron Paul anti-war movement just like back in the day by the other left in our country.

      You probably will never understand because we are from two different voluntary eras, but my career also overlapped your time served and I have seen it all my friend. Seen it all. I dealt with those earlier insulting times by a different generation for what I believed was a noble cause and was hurt more by my own countrymen and women than anything any enemy presented me with. Doesn’t matter who was CIC and running the show… we did our duty whether we agreed with it or not.

      I took this saying very seriously JUST… ” ours was not to reason why… ours was to do or die.” Doesn’t make us who believed that to be stupid… just made us loyal to our nation and let the chips fall where they may. We did our duty. We were volunteers. We took the very bad with the sometimes good.

      @Justangry, it seems to me that whoever did not go to Vietnam in the 60′s is a draft dodger in your book. Sorry, but that’s crazy thinking. The government had rules at that time about who was drafted and who wasn’t, and for what reasons. You need to quit painting everybody who didn’t go as a bad guy, because that is clearly not the case.

      By the way, if you had the choice to serve a mission to teach the Gospel, or to be drafted, what would you have chosen? Just curious about your personal desires and motivations.

      DJ, I don‘t have a problem with those that didn’t serve in VN. I do have a problem with taking deferments. I wouldn’t have a problem with Romney deferments if he intended to be a spiritual leader the rest of his life, but he wants to be a hawkish commander in chief. For the most part deferments allow people of privilege off the hook and I don‘t think it’s fair. Also, it would be more believable if he were helping starving kids in Africa or something, but Paris?! Yeah, give me a break. As for me, I’d volunteer as I did for Desert Storm.

      @Time2, That’s all well and good for the most part, but I’m seeing evil in the men that are running our foreign policy these days. I don’t care if we go to war for just reasons. I’m not a fan of preemption at all. I want to see it discussed and declared in congress rather than in the CFR or some other think tank by globalists, central bankers, IMF, World Bank, Military Industrial Complex, UN, Nato, etc. Like I said, I tried to go back in when we were attacked, but they wouldn’t let me because of my kidneys. I’m just seeing our boys being used for financial gain of a few and for unjust reasons while the country is going broke. It would be a lot easier for me to swallow if these men were protecting our Constitution as well instead of crapping all over it.

      OUT OF TOUCH – This from a man who lived in Indonesia, who went to college on a scholarship reserved for foreign students, by claiming to be Indonesian. A man who still hidfes his college records and what passport he used to travel on while a student, A man who surrendered his BAR license rather than face charges he lied on his application. A man who never held a real job. A man who while serving as a state senator had a very spotty attendance/voting record. A man that while a US Senator had no record of taking a stand for or against anything.
      Where does a man tith this record come off calling someone out of touch?
      The man, who as president, interfered in minor local matters (the beer summit). The man who is covering up criminal activity by his AG by declaring executive privilage. The man who passes laws that congress has rejected, because he knows what is better for the country than they do (the dream act). The man who has cabinet members involved in scandals (Fat Janet and her lesbian army) Katy Selibus and destroyed records, Timmy Gietner and unpaid taxes, Epic Holdup and contempt of congress.
      Sure sounds like someone who is out of touch to me.

      Seriously, where do you get your information? You are one of the most confidently poorly informed people I have ever come across. So Mormons are all rich then? Or is it because Mormons “take care of each other” that money is never an issue for Mormons? I know a lot of rich Mormons and I know a lot of dirt poor Mormons, same as I know for Catholics, Baptists, Buddhists, etc. religion has nothing to do with it.

That’s why the LDS welfare program is considered one of the best and most efficient in the world right?     Romney needs to fire back immediately, “Who paid for your college?” One of life’s great mysteries is how Obama was admitted to the tough schools he attended and who paid for it.

    Likley a boondoggle, reverse discrmination government program took care of him at tax-payer expense or maybe “handlers” who were setting him up for future use as an elected puppet took care of hm.

    The only thing known about his college times are that it is a total, lock-down secret period in his life which the media is not about to ask him about.

    Come on Romney! Come on Super Pacs – nail this guy on this issue and make him squirm!

    Yes, Romney who helped build a memorial park when a friend’s son died of cystic fibrosis. Romney who lent money to renters to help them buy a house he owned. Romney who stopped his campaign bus to help a guy dig out a stump in his front yard.

    I think that not stepping foot in the Continental US until the age of 17 and being raised in Indonesia by a Mother that renounced her US citizenship and then by grandparents that were either communist or socialist or Marxist makes one more out of touch with most folks in the USA than someone having a somewhat greater wealth when growing up in the USA.

      I know he sounds like O‘rielly saying he’s middle class. O’rielly only studied one year and Europe and went to the middle class school Harvard. I on the other hand grew up rich.     At least Romney doesn’t count as his closest friends, Terrorist Bill Ayers and Ayers’ wife convicted terrorist Bernardine Dohrn as Obama does. They bombed American homes, building and police stations, etc.
