Obama Tells Congressional Leaders to ‘Act Like Grownups’ on Budget

In a surprise appearance at the daily White House press briefing today, President Barack Obama inserted himself into the budget debate that has, in recent weeks, consumed lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
The WSJ reports:
President Barack Obama stepped out personally to address the impasse on budget negotiations and reject a Republican proposal for another temporary resolution unless it is to give Congress a few more days to pass a permanent deal.
“We are now at a point where there is no excuse to extend this further,” Mr. Obama said during a surprise appearance at the daily White House briefing. “I shouldn’t have to oversee a process where Congress deals with last-year’s budget when we only have six months left.”
The president, who has mostly stayed out of the budget debate until now, was visibly irritated over the impasse in negotiations. “There can be some negotiations about composition” of the cuts, Mr. Obama said, but he said he will not negotiate on ideological issues like abortion in the current budget discussions.
“We don’t have time for games,” he said. “Not on this.”
The current stopgap spending measure for fiscal 2011, which began last October, expires at midnight Friday. The federal government is preparing for a partial government shutdown to begin this weekend if another stopgap measure or legislation funding the government through the remainder of the fiscal year isn’t approved soon.
Mr. Obama said that the White House has “identified areas where we have made significant cuts,” and that he has moved to accept Republicans’ “original proposal for how much would be cut.”
“We are now closer than we’ve ever been to getting an agreement,” Mr. Obama said. “The only question is whether politics or ideology is going to get in the way of preventing a shutdown.”
According to the Financial Times, Obama implored Congressional leaders to “act like grown ups.”
Mr Obama, who publicly waded into the talks for the first time, called on congressional leaders to act “like grown ups” after the meeting and said it was time to reach an agreement and stop “spending our time quibbling around the edges”.
But one Congressional leader–John Boehner–was undeterred. He said that the Democrats’ “smoke and mirrors” tactics will not stop the GOP from making the largest cuts possible.
The AP notes that later today, Boehner, Harry Reid, and Obama will meet to discuss the budget:
Appearing before reporters at the White House, Obama said that House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid were to meet on Capitol Hill later Tuesday to continue negotiations. If that meeting does not produce an agreement, Obama said he would summon the pair back to the White House Wednesday.
“Myself, Joe Biden, my team – we are prepared to meet for as long as possible to get this resolved,” Obama said.
Boehner, in a televised appearance right after Obama, said Republicans also want to avoid a government shutdown but also want to achieve the largest spending cuts that are possible. “We believe cutting spending will help us create jobs in America,” he said.

But, if YOU want to personally donate to Planned Parenthood, YOU go ahead. You are free to spend your money how you choose. And I should have the freedom to choose NOT to donate. If the Amercian public feels this is a program worth supporting there will be no problem raising enough to continue business without a hitch WITHOUT government using taxpayer money to support it.

He’s been having a good time on your money, and when he runs low he just prints more, so he has a endless flow of cash in his pocket to spend on his friends. Coming into 2012 he’s going to be printing lots and lots of money to people to vote for him so he can enjoy his life long vacation that he has been on for two years now, it‘s owed him he’s a muslim and its his right to be king for life.

He has changed his mind a second time and now wants a $100B spending cut with all of the spending cuts coming from Democrat areas, as opposed to Republican ones. He is doing this for political reasons: 1) to placate the Tea Party movement, which keeps escalating the cuts they demand; and 2) to ensure that no Republicans become upset with him and become a rival to the Speaker position. This has been reported widely on the news wires, but I do not think that Fox News reports this since it doesn’t make the GOP look like it has clean hands. Rather, Fox wants its viewers to blame the Democrats for a shutdown and doesn’t want the GOP to look culpable. Hence, the lack of coverage.
Here are the details:
1. The AP on Sunday reported: “Eventually, both parties must decide where to draw the line in negotiations and whether to risk a government shutdown that could trigger unpredictable political fallout.
Some congressional veterans say Boehner is taking the only realistic approach for a speaker who wants to stay in power. If he cuts a deal that relies heavily on Democrats’ votes, he could alienate scores of House Republicans, who might in turn start seeking a new leader…”Not very interested,” Boehner told reporters last week when asked about forming a coalition with Democrats to pass the legislation to keep the government operating.”
2. Reuters also noted: “Republicans have proposed cuts of $61 billion in fiscal year 2011 from current levels, a step President Barack Obama says would choke the faltering economic recovery. But for some in the Tea Party, it is not enough. They say the figure should be at least $100 billion. “Congressman Boehner, you look like a fool,” Judson Phillips, founder of Tea Party Nation, one of the loosely organized conservative movement’s most prominent groups, wrote in a recent blog….
Complaints by Tea Party Republicans have already forced Boehner to almost double the amount of spending cuts proposed this year from $32 billion. The House Republicans passed a bill slashing $61 billion from government programs, from education, environment, health, energy to the humanities and arts.”
3. Politico reported: “Republican leaders are preparing the House for a government shutdown, as they plan to distribute a pamphlet about the mechanics of a partial congressional work-stoppage to all lawmakers’ offices Tuesday morning, according to several senior House aides. It’s the strongest signal yet that House Speaker John Boehner believes the White House and Congress could fail to strike a deal on a long-term funding bill before the government’s authority to spend money runs out on Friday. Talks came to a standstill Monday, amid amplified partisan recriminations. To illustrate just how tense the situation has become, Boehner (R-Ohio) did not initially commit to a meeting President Barack Obama plans to host at the White House on Tuesday — the same day House Republicans plan to release their entitlement-slashing budget plan for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. Boehner’s office confirmed late Monday that he will attend but arrive after it starts.”
The economy is in recovery but remains weak. A government shutdown will have a much bigger impact in the current situation than it did under Gingrich and Clinton in the 90s. Anyone who hopes for economic recovery should not want a shutdown, so actively rooting for it, as many Republicans are, is really rather foolish. They apparently put party above country. And that is very sad.
No wonder the President is asking folks to act like grownups. They surely are not right now.

He intentionally misleads, which makes him a liar. The Democrats have committed generational theft and as you would call anyone who steals from children, they are child abusers. They HAD complete and total control of the House, the Senate and the Executive branch. They drove economy into the ground, stole from our children and grandchildren and the American people said NO MORE. November 2nd, 2010 was a message of epic proportions. A shellacking never seen in our lifetime. The Democrats, who are still acting like children, are about to get another rude awakening. The majority in America is fed up with them. Make note of all who support those who would steal from our children. Use your power to stop supporting them. G.E., G.M., some banks, credit card companies, the MSM, and unions. We are the majority and if we stop doing business with these thieves we will prevail. We have the real power. The majority of the support for the left comes from welfare recipients and they have no power. If you buy from GE or GM you are supporting generational theft. Think about it. Just as the caucus gives Slimy Schumer and Washerwoman Shill etal their talking points, each time a Republican speaks about the budget they should preface the blurb citing the fact that when the Dems had the WH, Senate, and House, they neglected their constitutional duty to come up with a budget, they deemed it unnecessary. They could also soften the accusation/truth by adding a kudo that unlike others, they did stay in Washington.
