Obama to Congress: You WILL Increase Debt Limit

CHICAGO (AP) — President Barack Obama confidently predicted Friday that a divided Congress would raise the nation’s borrowing limit to cover the staggering federal debt rather than risk triggering a worldwide recession, but he conceded for the first time he would have to offer more spending cuts to Republicans to get a deal.

Pushed to the brink, Obama said, the two parties would find “a smart compromise.”

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama also took pains to promote his long-term plan to cuts trillions of dollars from federal deficits as a fairer, more compassionate alternative to a Republican plan that surged to party-line passage Friday afternoon in the House.

And Obama said in his most forceful terms yet that he had the economic record to win re-election after he had “been able to yank this economy” out of recession.

One week after the near government shutdown – Obama signed the bill finalizing that legislation after returning to the White House – the rejuvenated president answered questions in his hometown following an evening of fundraising for his re-election bid and a rare night in his own bed.

On America’s wars, he said that a significant number of troops would begin coming home from Afghanistan in July despite expectations that the withdrawal could be modest. He said the U.S. would not expand its military role to end a bloody stalemate in Libya but insisted that Moammar Gadhafi would, in time, be forced from power.

While the House approved the multitrillion-dollar deficit-cuts measure, it was Obama’s comments on the debt limit – an issue the White House has labored to keep separate from yearly red ink totals – that altered the debate of the day.

The government is nearing its borrowing limit of $14.3 trillion and risks going into a crippling default. Seizing on public frustration about spending, House Republicans say they won’t lift the debt cap without more cuts.

Obama told the AP without doubt: “We will raise the debt limit. We always have. We will do it again.”

He warned that anything less would undermine the solvency of the government, roil financial markets and potentially “plunge the world economy back into a recession.” Yet when pressed on how the stalemate with House Speaker John Boehner would end, Obama said: “I think he‘s absolutely right that it’s not going to happen without some spending cuts.”

The president spoke in the context of his goal that Democratic and Republican lawmakers can agree on a framework for long-term deficit reduction within the next couple of months. That falls within about the same time frame that Congress will need to vote to lift the debt ceiling. The administration says the latest Congress could act on that is by early July.

When asked if he thought the perilous stakes alone would cause Republicans to give in, Obama said: “Well, no, I don’t expect the Republicans to give in and I get 100 percent of my way, and I don‘t expect that we’re going to give 100 percent of what the Republicans want. I think what we want to do is make sure that we have a smart compromise that is serious.”

A Boehner spokesman, Brendan Buck, welcomed Obama’s willingness to connect the debt limit to broader reductions in spending, saying that is what the American people want. “It’s encouraging he may now be getting that message,” Buck said.

Later, Obama spokesman Jay Carney sought to pull back a bit on the president’s remarks. Carney said Obama was acknowledging that more deficit cuts are needed but insists the debt ceiling vote cannot be contingent on upcoming negotiations.

In the 25-minute interview, Obama underlined his vision and re-election campaign message about the country’s path. He said he shares the Republicans’ desire for fiscal restraint but stands alone in protecting the social compacts and priorities of a nation. Elaborating on his description of a Republican “pessimistic vision,” he said: “It’s one that says that America can no longer do some of the big things that made us great, that made us the envy of the world.”

On Afghanistan, where the United States has 100,000 troops, Obama offered a somewhat aggressive assessment of the scope of the troop withdrawal that is to begin as he promised in July. The goal is to transfer responsibility to Afghan forces.

Without estimating a number of U.S. troops who will return, Obama said, “I’m confident that the withdrawal will be significant. People will say this is a real process of transition; this is not just a token gesture.”

The president‘s stance on Libya comes as Gadhafi’s troops have relentlessly attacked rebel positions as part of a deadlocked internal war sparked two months ago. The international community intervened with airstrikes a month ago, but the U.S. recently stepped back into a support role and questions abound about the mission’s success.

“I’m actually very impressed with the performance of NATO so far,” Obama said in rejecting any increased U.S. role.

The president, himself, described the conflict as a stalemate on the ground but said Gadhafi is being “squeezed.”

“He’s running out of money. He is running out of supplies,” Obama said. “The noose is tightening, and he is becoming more and more isolated. And my expectation is, is that if we continue to apply that pressure and continue to protect civilians, which NATO is doing very capably, then I think over the long term, Gadhafi will go and we will be successful.”

On terrorism, the president declined to guarantee that the Guantanamo Bay prison camp for terrorist suspects would close during his presidency. He had once promised to shut the military-run facility in Cuba within a year of taking over the job.

He conceded he does not have the support of Congress on that issue and has not been able to overcome fears of bringing some detainees into the United States for trial. “It’s my job to give people some assurance that we can handle this effectively, and obviously I haven’t been able to make the case right now,” he said. “That doesn’t mean I stop making the case.”

To win a second term, Obama must convince a nation still saddled with high joblessness and a fragile economic recovery that he has overseen a period of progress – and that more is on the way. Obama said he’s got a record he can sell: Wall Street regulation, a health care insurance overhaul and efforts to make college more affordable.

“I think I’m going to be able to make an effective case,” he said. The president said that it has been under his watch that the country went from a staggering recession into steady progress and that “I have been able to yank this economy out of that hole and get it back on a track to growth.”

The 2012 presidential race is the first in which the tea party coalition, which denounces the growth of government and assails much of the Obama presidency, will play a major role. The president took an upbeat role of such a movement: “Anytime the American people are actively engaged in the political process, it’s good.”

    Let it come to a head NOW! This has become like the argument that a couple avoids for years because they both know things are gonna be ugly once the truth hits the fan. It HAS to get worse and then we can clear the air before it can get better. I want to go back to being concerned with the simple things. Nothing can happen until we get our heads out of our asses and admit we have major problems.

    Think Rush said he agrees with this assessment unfortunately. He thinks the old elitist leadership Repubs. have already decided they don’t want this to be the “big fight” that they said it would be…..they’ll end up raising it & get some concessions that really aren’t concessions, smoke & mirrors like last time. They’ll say the biggest deal is the 2012 election, which of course it is, but there’ll be huge disagreements with the Tea Party newbies once again – and I‘m afraid we won’t get too close to what we wanted. But didn’t really expect to — think it is true we won’t be able to do that until we win both the Senate and Presidency. So get ready. We all need to pray that the Tea Party types take over the Repub. party.

    This GOP is the same GOP who let Clinton go in the 90′s and the same GOP who forced Bush to not fight back against the smears by Pelosi and Reid. They are now dismantling the Tea Party with Boehner giving away the store. The GOP haven’t had an easier softball than the CR when Obama said that he was not going to fund our troops engaged in THREE wars but Boehner gave that one away. The Debt limit is a weaker fight, media exposure wise, but can bring Obama to a screeching halt. Everyone knows that Boehner will AGAIN go along to get along. He’s from the “Old Guard”, a real “Country Club” Republican who comes from teh same school as John McCain and Bob Dole.

      So whats the Deal with Obama Really???

      VERY QUIETLY OBAMA’S CITIZENSHIP CASE REACHES THE SUPREME COURT

      AP – WASHINGTON D.C. –
      In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama’s qualifications for the presidency, the group “Americans for Freedom of Information” has Released copies of President Obama’s college transcripts from Occidental College … Released today, the transcript school indicates that Obama, under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate. The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship.
      This document would seem to provide the smoking gun that many of Obama’s detractors have been seeking. Along with the evidence that he was first born in Kenya and there is no record of him ever applying for US citizenship, this is looking pretty grim. The news has created a firestorm at the White House as the release casts increasing doubt about Obama’s legitimacy and qualification to serve as President article titled, “Obama Eligibility Questioned,” leading some to speculate that the story may overshadow economic issues on Obama’s first official visit to the U.K. In a related matter, under growing pressure from several groups, Justice Antonin Scalia announced that the Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to hear arguments concerning Obama’s legal eligibility to serve as President in a case brought by Leo Donofrio of New Jersey . This lawsuit claims Obama’s dual citizenship disqualified him from serving as president.. Donofrio‘s case is just one of 18 suits brought by citizens demanding proof of Obama’s citizenship or qualification to serve as president.

      Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation has released the results of their investigation of Obama’s campaign spending. This study estimates that Obama has spent upwards of $950,000 in campaign funds in the past year with eleven law firms in 12 states for legal resources to block disclosure of any of his personal records. Mr. Kreep indicated that the investigation is still ongoing but that the final report will be provided to the U.S. Attorney general, Eric Holder. Mr. Holder has refused to comment on the matter…

      LET OTHER FOLKS KNOW THIS NEWS, THE MEDIA WON’T !

      Subject: RE: Issue of Passport?

      While I’ve little interest in getting in the middle of the Obama birth issue, Paul Hollrah over at FSM did so yesterday and believes the issue can be resolved by Obama answering one simple question: What passport did he use when he was shuttling between New York , Jakarta , and Karachi ?

      So how did a young man who arrived in New York in early June 1981, without the price of a hotel room in his pocket, suddenly come up with the price of a round-the-world trip just a month later?

      And once he was on a plane, shuttling between New York , Jakarta , and Karachi , what passport was he offering when he passed through Customs and Immigration?

      The American people not only deserve to have answers to these questions, they must have answers. It makes the debate over Obama’s citizenship a rather short and simple one.

      Q: Did he travel to Pakistan in 1981, at age 20?
      A : Yes, by his own admission.

      Q: What passport did he travel under?
      A: There are only three possibilities.
      1) He traveled with a U.S. … Passport,
      2) He traveled with a British passport, or
      3) He traveled with an Indonesia passport.

      Q: Is it possible that Obama traveled with a U.S. Passport in 1981?
      A: No. It is not possible. Pakistan was on the U.S. .. State Department’s “no travel” list in 1981.

      Conclusion: When Obama went to Pakistan in 1981 he was traveling either with a British passport or an Indonesian passport.

      If he were traveling with a British passport that would provide proof that he was born in Kenya on August 4, 1961, not in Hawaii as he claims.. And if he were traveling with an Indonesian passport that would tend to prove that he relinquished whatever previous citizenship he held, British or American, prior to being adopted by his Indonesian step-father in 1967.

      Whatever the truth of the matter, the American people need to know how he managed to become a “natural born” American citizen between 1981 and 2008.

      Given the destructive nature of his plans for America, as illustrated by his speech before Congress and the disastrous spending plan he has presented to Congress, the sooner we learn the truth of all this, the better.

      If you Don’t care that Your President is not a natural born Citizen and in Violation of the Constitution, then Deletethis, and then lower your American Flag to half-staff, because the U.S. Constitution is already on life-support, and won’t survive much longer.

      If you do care then Forward this to as many patriotic Americans as you can, because our country is being looted and ransacked!

      I will fight raising the debt ceiling to my last breath! I will knock on door to door in search of a replacement for any Georgia U.S. Senator who votes FOR it. I will do the same if my congressional representative votes for it.

      If the debt ceiling is raised AGAIN, they will only spend to that ceiling. What needs to be done is fire the 800,000-plus federal employees that have been hired since Obama/Soetoro usurped the office of POTUS, cut all spending that has been passed but not spent, and pass Paul Ryan’s legislation AS IS!

      I am tired of listening to Socialist BS. We want prosperity, not enslavement to government. This is right on topic:

      Jediusetheforce – quite an analysis. The logic is faulty however. I think that the following might be more accurate.

      1. Children born outside of the US to US citizens (Obama’s mother) need to make up their mind by the time they are 18 whether to adopt their parent’s US citizenship or the citizenship of the country of their birth or of their other parent who might not be a US citizen (in this case Obama’s father who was a Kenyan).
      2. Just because Obama pater was (English Colonial) Kenyan and could pass his Kenyan citizenship on to his son does not mean that Obama fils was born in Kenya – he may have been born anywhere on the globe and still be deemed to be Kenyan.
      3. As a child Obama was taken to Indonesia by his mother and step father (Soetero). Obama was apparently enrolled in school in Indonesia as an Indonesian whose religion is Islam (an image of a purported school enrollment document has traveled the internet over the last few years).
      4. What age was Obama when he enrolled in Occidental College and received financial aid as a foreign national? Was he already past 18? If so he clearly had renounced his right to US citizenship by failing to formerly adopt it at the age of 18 or was being sly with the truth (of his multiple citizenships) to access the financial assistance as a foreigner.
      5 A person can legally have citizenship in many countries simultaneously. Just because that person uses one passport and not another does not invalidate the other citizenships.
      6 My key question always come back to … Why does Obama not simply release his Long Form Birth Certificate or authorize the State of Hawaii to do so? This is backed up by the question …. Why spend so much money and aggravation on a matter that is so simple to resolve?

      The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship.

      SEE????!!!! I told you guys I’d seen this transcript…clearly Obama was applying as a foreign student. There’s also the Video tape of him answering a report from the floor of the Illinois Senate saying that “no, I’m not eligible to be President ” probably done about 1997 or 8 maybe 1999. It was all over YOU TUBE.

      Speaking for myself, I have a lot better things to think about and do than get revved up on the Birther thing…but the SOB is not legal and nothing he does is LEGAL…and he’s tearing apart the country that I LOVE with all my heart, next to GOD and my Family…. I want him stopped.

      ALSO: SOMEONE please!!! FIND OUT why he and Michelle gave up their Law licenses in the State of Il. about the time of the REZKO trial…who gives up their law licenses? I have many attorneys in my family and passing the bar is quite the task…none of them would give up their licenses —- what happened?

      ALSO ALSO: ON the “I just ran into Bill Ayers in my neighborhood” BS!!! Now we know that AYERS wrote Obama’s first book “Dreams of My Father” and…and…and… his wife and Michelle Obama worked together in the SAME law firm in CHICAGO (known for it’s liberalism) since 1988 when Michelle got out of law school and together through the time that Obama came to work AT THE SAME LAW FIRM in 90 or 91. COME ON…. just how dumb do they thinki we are?

      SO Obama knew AYERS…plotted with AYERS …AYERS wrote his book for him. Then something very illegal happened to both Obamas and they were forced to give up their Licenses to Practice Law… I think it was MORE than Michelle’s “patient dumping” with Axelrod ….it had to do with REZKO….isn’t there some journalist out there who wants a Pulitzer?

      The republicants in the House better man/woman up and not do what he wants. To increase the debt ceiling is like someone who is technically bankrupt, hasnt filed yet, asking for more credit. In this example they only bring home $1000/mo but their expenses are $2500+ a month where they end up charging their bills to their credit cards. They go to the same creditors they are charging their bills and ask for an increase in their credit line. This is insane the country has no money we are BROKE! Do not listen to pundits saying we are going broke… what do you think the $14.3Trillion deficit is!?

      This guy wants the country to collapse financially to reign in whatever this machine they are building around our existing gov’t and financial structure. Did anyone notice not a word has been said about the nations that met recently where DrudgeReport headline read “New World Powers Push For End Of Dollar Dominance”?

      The debt ceiling must not be raised, it opens the door for more spending and to fund ‘obominations’ like Obamacare.

      I heard Neal Boortz or Erick Erickson (can’t remember which) talking about the law licenses on the radio. Michelle Obama was involved in some sort of scandal. It is not a temporary “suspension.” Don’t know why Obama/Soetoro’s was terminated, but I will see what I can find out.

      There is a web site for the Illinois State Bar Association where, a long time ago, I saw where both of them had their licenses terminated.

      (They need proof of natural-born citizenship, not citizenship.)

      From Fox News:

      PHOENIX — The Arizona Legislature gave final approval late Thursday night to a proposal that would require President Obama and other presidential candidates to prove they are U.S. citizens before their names can appear on the state’s ballot.

      Arizona would become the first state to require such proof if Gov. Jan Brewer signs the measure into law.

      Republican Rep. Carl Seel of Phoenix, the author of the bill, said the bill wasn’t about opposition to Obama. “This bill is about the integrity of our elections,” Seel said.

      Thirteen other states have considered similar proposals this year. The proposals were defeated in Arkansas, Connecticut, Maine and Montana.

      The bill won final approval from the state House in a 40-16 vote.

      So-called “birthers” contend since the last presidential election that Obama is ineligible to hold the nation’s highest elected office because, they argue, he was actually born in Kenya, his father’s homeland. The Constitution said a person must be a “natural-born citizen” to be eligible for the presidency.

      Hawaii officials have repeatedly confirmed Obama’s citizenship, and his Hawaiian birth certificates have been made public. Even though the courts have rebuffed lawsuits challenging Obama’s eligibility, the issue hasn’t gone away.

      “It’s a fringe issue in my view, and it‘s going to cause people to look again at Arizona and say what’s all this craziness going on there,” said Democratic Rep. Daniel Patterson of Tucson, an opponent of the bill.

      The Arizona proposal would require political parties and presidential candidates to hand in affidavits stating a candidate‘s citizenship and age and to provide the candidate’s birth certificate and a sworn statement saying where the candidate has lived for 14 years.

      If candidates don’t have a copy of their birth certificates, they could meet the requirement by providing baptismal or circumcision certificates, hospital birth records and other documents.

      If it can’t be determined whether candidates who provided documents in place of their birth certificates are eligible to appear on the ballot, the secretary of state would be able to set up a committee to help determine whether the requirements have been met.

      The names of candidates can be kept off the ballot if the secretary of state doesn’t believe the candidates met the citizenship requirement. -0-
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      (Naturally, it would be a DEMOCRAT who opposed the bill. Anything CONSTITUTIONAL is not on their radar!)
      Current Taxation: In 2010, the federal government collected roughly $2.2 trillion in total tax revenue. Income taxes accounted for $900 billion of collections, or about 40% of all tax receipts. The federal government spent around $3.5 trillion; the resulting deficit of $1.3 trillion was made possible by borrowing
      Government Spending Hidden from Taxpayers: The future tax burden created by this level of borrowing and spending is frightening. If Americans knew the level of income taxes they would have to pay in the not-too-distant future to cover current and future federal overspending, Tax Day would be even more alarming.Tax, Tax, Tax: Rather than seriously address out-of-control spending and entitlement reform, President Obama is once again proposing major tax increases to help pay for his reckless spending habits.
