Obama to Deliver Jobs Speech ‘Dress Rehearsal’ at Detroit AFL-CIO Rally

President Obama to Deliver Labor Day Jobs Speech Dress RehearsalWASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is celebrating Labor Day in Detroit, previewing his ideas for job creation and economic growth at a rally with thousands of supportive labor union members.

Obama’s speech at an annual event sponsored by the Metropolitan Detroit AFL-CIO was serving as a dress rehearsal for the jobs address he’ll deliver to a joint session of Congress on Thursday night.

The president‘s appearance follows last Friday’s dismal jobs report, which showed that employers added no jobs in August. It was the first time since 1945 that the government reported a net job change of zero. The unemployment rate, meanwhile, held steady at 9.1 percent.

The disappointing report sparked new fears of a second recession and injected fresh urgency into efforts by Obama to help get millions of unemployed people back into the labor market – and help improve his chances of getting re-elected.

Polls show the economy and jobs are the public’s top concerns. Public approval of Obama’s stewardship of the economy hit a new low of 26 percent in a recent Gallup survey.

The unemployment report also gave Obama’s Republican critics, including those who want to challenge him in next year’s presidential election, fresh ammunition to pound him with.

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney called the report disappointing, unacceptable and “further proof that President Obama has failed.” Romney is scheduled to outline his own job-creation plan in a Tuesday speech in the battleground state of Nevada.

Obama’s plan is expected to include a combination of individual and business tax credits and public works spending. He will also press lawmakers for swift action on those proposals.

“These are bipartisan ideas that ought to be the kind of proposals that everybody can get behind, no matter what your political affiliation might be,” Obama said last week. “So my hope and expectation is that we can put country before party and get something done for the American people.”

Obama spent part of the holiday weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland “putting the finishing touches” on the proposals and the speech, said spokesman Jay Carney.

“That process continues over the next few days, but he’s very far along,” Carney said.

In Detroit on Monday, Obama was also expected to tout his efforts to save the auto industry and millions of jobs by providing federal bailouts in 2009 for General Motors Corp. and Chrysler Group LLC. The AFL-CIO rally was being held in a GM parking lot.

      If he really wanted an honest reaction to his speech he should give it to a Tea Party group. Wonder if there are any closet Tea Party members in unions. Union thugs sure have been talking a lot on TV lately. Its time to abolish unions and level the playing field. Obama is for everything TP is against, unions and muslims. He loves them both.

      When he gets thunderous applause at this rally, he forgets that the private unions only make up 7% of the working public. He’d have a larger pro rata sement of the populaton if he gave his speech at a gay pride rally.

      My sons and I were in Detroit yesterday for something actually worth while… the Detroit Jazz Festival. Had a great time and enjoyed being back in the city I left about eight years ago. But when I turned on the local TV news this evening, I couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of this empty-suit Obama being half-heartedly applauded by a crowd of perhaps a hundred in front of the RenCen Building (home of Welfare Motors/GM) by a gaggle of union goons and welfare recipients. What a sorry JOKE this excuse for a President is !

    WHY does he think we want to here in speak? Why does he only talk to unions and blacks? While obama was giving one of his greatest speeches someone stole the tires of Air Force 1. No one can believe it and we are sure they have a good use for them in the hood. It takes five union worker to shine those rims.

      I agree with you as far as his speeches are always in front of Union workers but as far as blacks lets face it he has done nothing for the rest of the country whites an blacks alike. The only thing he has done is increase the size of government, payouts to union thugs and push more social welfare programs to keep the modern day plantation in check. He has no foriegn policy experience, shuts our oil wells down in the Gulf with EPA laws but yet gives Brazil billions to drill for there black gold. GO FIGURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    every time that Obama talks about job creation,it always involves infrastructure jobs….union controlled construction jobs….Rush has it right,nothing more than a money laundering scheme for the Democrat party….give tax payer money to union controlled municipalities,they pay union employees,union employees pay union dues,unions use the dues to give large contributions back to the Democrat party…Obama NEVER does anything to help the private sector through tax breaks and relaxed regulations..he is protecting his own

    I did a search on Detroit. Unemployment is estimated at near 30%, but the mayor believes it’s closer to 50%. I guess the higher number reflects those that would rather sit at home and get free Obama-bucks. Did find a near stampede for more freebies from the government video. I couldn’t find stats on how many are on government assistance. Bill Bennet said this morning that 75% grow up in a single family home, without seeing a father/father-figure get up every morning and go to work.

      Detroit is the shining example of how liberal, progressive policies can destroy a nation. If people are so ignorant and cannot look at Detroit to see what America will become in just a few more years under the “Progressive” (A misnomer if there ever was one) Democrats and “Progressive” RINO Republicans, then America is doomed.

      That’s right Odumbo, ask for more Federal spending which will put us deeper in debt to China. Funnel more money into pet rat holes which won’t help the economy any more than the last giveaway round did. Let your cronie Bernake print more worthless paper in order to erode the buying power of the average American causing more pain, especially in the supermarkets. Ask for more rules and regulations which will stiffle job growth and cause existing businesses to lay off employees. Go ahead and ask for more taxes, not to fix the deficit but to spend recklessy of inane and worthless projects. Hurry and fund more “Green” projects, like the Solar Panel factory, which will be doomed to failure.

      My advice to everyone, there will be an interesting football game on TV and for those not interested in football, The WWE may be competing for viewers. Otherwise, be prepared to hear much of the same old tired line and be prepared to YAWN.

    I will cut taxes on all taxpayers, those 50% who pay no fed tax will have to starting paying some, I will cut corp taxes to zero, cut cap gains to zero, and grandfather overseas corp taxes altogether. Unions, well you can go to hell. Oh, and I’ll abolish the EPA. The Dept’s of Energy and Education need to go away too since all they do is screw things up. I am canceling my Green Jobs agenda since it is a giant failure, already having blown many billions of taxpayers money. If the economy does not rebound with under 5% unemployment by Nov I will resign in disgrace.

    The ONLY group who will listen to him, and I’d bet (if I bet on things) that they will be coerced (as in “Go or your family dies” sort of thing) into attending. Well, some of them, any way. Some are angry and because they cannot yell at the people with whom they are angry (union thugs and union bosses), they yell at “the little guy”, the one who they think cannot strike back. (TEA PARTY, anyone?) Far too many union people cannot think. Thinking causes headaches, which lead to heartaches and soul aches….something union people drown with cases of beer and or drugs. .. soul aches are crippling. Consequently, they choose not to think. Or, they just yell and are disruptive. Those are the noman’s voters and base. The elites eschew the beer part and head straight for hard liquor and harder drugs, and/or more botox. Bring anyone to mind???

      I have always been a Packers fan. Now i still may pull for them, however t will always be different.
      A real fan will always feel good for the people that live there. I have lost all respect for that state. Senators that run away when times are tough, people who have no respect for their capital bldgs. Teachers that hand out sick notes to kids so they can come protest with them.     This would seem to mean that his speech is going to be filled with goodies for Unions. In his “stimulus” package, all money for road construction had to go to union companies therefore excluding 93% of the construction workers in the United States. Regardless of what they would like you to think, what is good for the unions is not always good for the rest of the country.

      That is a specialized “niche”, which leaves most of us OUT!

      Blacks have an outrageously high unemployment rate, and I hope they realize how you have used them as pawns, and desert you.

      It’s a matter of survival when you leave them with no other way to exist.
