Obama to Illegal Immigrants: We Want You to Succeed!

CNS News reports:
When questioned by an illegal alien student today who showed him a deportation letter, President Barack Obama said he did not want to deport illegal alien students like the one who questioned him, he wanted them to succeed.
The exchange came during a town hall event sponsored by the Spanish-language television network Univision at a Washington, D.C., school. An illegal alien student, who appeared via Skype, asked: “My question for the president is, why [is the government] saying that deportations have stopped or the detention of many students like me, why is it that we are still receiving deportation letters like this one?”
Obama answered, “We have redesigned our enforcement practices under the law to make sure that we’re focusing primarily on criminals, and so our deportation of criminals are up about 70 percent. Our deportation of non-criminals are down, and that’s because we want to focus our resources on those folks who are destructive to the community.
“And for a young person like that young woman that we just spoke to who’s going to school, doing all the right things, we want them to succeed,” Obama said.

The Congress has passed laws that prohibit torture, reflecting international laws, and they were most likely broken. If conservatives “just want to enforce laws,” then why don’t we start with those??
Or what about the EPA enforcing laws to regulate greenhouse gases, which was upheld last year by the Supreme Court. There is no higher court, so you cannot say that the law of the land is not to enforce carbon emissions. But conservatives refuse to enforce those laws…
What about Roe v Wade? That is also the law of the land, but they support undermining it or overturning it any chance that they get. Why are conservatives against so many laws?
Funny how selective conservatives are about the laws they want enforced and the ones that they want ignored…

The US government has prosecuted for war crimes Japanese officers that ordered the same waterboarding techniques against Americans during WWII. Thus, Dick Cheney should be subjected to the same prosecution and likely would be found guilty, given the prior legal precedent–unlike conservative simpletons, judges are not allowed to change what is legal based upon who is perpetrating it. And a just legal system cannot treat Japanese war criminals differently than Dick Cheney for doing the same thing. Even John McCain admitted as much, recognizing the huge hypocrisy of his party on the issue, not to mention the very real risks that our soldiers will be waterboarded with a vengence should they be captured as POWs in the future. And the idea that we waterboard our own soldiers all the time as training is absurd. For a friend to electrically shock you is one thing. For an enemy to do it is something else entirely. Finally, even if you have very horrible ex-wives, to make such a comparison to torture is to belittle real human rights violations. One shouldn’t trivialize it, even if it happened to people you do not like. What comes around goes around.

Every American alive today is an alien or a descendant of someone who entered the country legally. Even the native American population came over to the North American Continent from Siberia.
The only success that an illegal alien should have is a successful deportation back to their home country.

If an illegal can get a college degree and do fantastically well in their own country, then we ought to find a way to keep them here. Instead, the genius conservatives want to throw them out even though we have subsidized their education and they are industrious members of society. They’d rather keep the American citizens that cannot stay out of jail while throwing out college grads who ended up here because their parents took them across the border when they were three years old. Yeah. That is a GREAT strategy. The Dream Act was about saving the lives of illegals who never were old enough to be responsible for ending up here, but even this most sympathetic group, the conservatives want to send back to countries where they know no one. Why do the conservatives insist upon this? They are likely cruel, racist or just stupid.

I never said it was a punishment to be born Mexican. The illegals brought here as children, in my experience are proud of their heritage. The problem with your argument is that you assume that the children feel Mexican. They do not. They feel American, with a Mexican background. Just like second or third generation Mexicans do. So it is punishment to send them to a country that they have few ties to and which they would feel a total foreign within.

I have and will continue to. I also live in a democracy where reasoned discourse should rule supreme, and the truth will out when intelligent people with open and educated minds consider the facts and then vote on the issue. The problem is that so many are incapable of reasoned discourse, consideration of the facts and logical analysis. They prefer fantasies to reality, like the one you just told about illegals coming here as children not considering it a punishment to be deported to a country they consider foreign, and then misrepresenting what I said by turning it into a quasi-racist remark. This is not how a democracy thrives. It is how political propaganda is perpetuated.

This statement reveals how little you know. My gardener is illegal. You would ask him to return to Mexico. But here is the problem. Even though he is married to a US citizen and has two little boys who were born here he would have to be separated from them for up to 10 years in order to get back into the country. He pays taxes on the $60K he makes from the gardening business he has built up over the last 15 years. He came to this country with him parents at age 13. To punish the action of a 13 year old that simply followed his parents–as you and I most certainly would have done in the same situation–is an unbelievably harsh punishment. And to leave his 4 and 9 year old fatherless for up to a decade is terrible as well. When I ask conservatives how to resolve this problem, they change the subject and cite the Mexican rapists–a far less representative group–becuase they prefer their fantasy narrative to reality. Republicans don’t want to solve the problem. They want to exploit racism, xenophobia and nationalism–not to mention meanness and cruelty–amongst extreme right wing voters to fuel political wins. This is exploitative and immoral, in my opinion.

Mexico is a poor country that lacks the resources to employ many people, especially given the success in China at displacing Mexican manufacturing. This is not an indictment of the talent and diligence of people like my gardener. You are clearly incapable of understanding the issue with any depth.

What if she came over before she was 21 or even 10 and had no control over her decision? What if she is still not 21 and relies on her parents to support her and knows no one in Mexico? This is actually a very common situation amongst many illegal immigrants to this country.
Unfortunately, conservatives can only think in simplistic white and black terms and do not understand how harsh enforcement of rules against such people actually is. They are unwilling to create a rational immigration policy that deals with this complexity, instead calling for mass deportment of the 12-20M illegals in this country regardless of their history or status. Worse, many of these same people, like the ones in Arizona, loudly protest when the government installs cameras to catch speeders since they want a black and white test to kick out the illegal immigrants, but they refuse the same ruthlessly efficient enforcement of laws when it comes to rounding up such speeders. They are hypocrites. And they are mean, calling for harsh treatment of others while they let themselves off the hook so easily.
If you want to send them all back and treat them all equally as criminals, then we ought to start doing the same to the “legal” Americans in this country who get off of crimes all the time. Want to enforce laws? Start with the corporations that advertise in Mexico for illegal labor to sneak across the border into this country to work at meat packers and migrant farming operations. But of course, those corporate interests, unlike those supporting minorities, give more to GOP causes, so we don’t see much criticism of them here…

This is the more analogous case. If you send back an entire family before they have settled here and lost all ties to their home country, that is one thing. But when you let children grow up in this country with no knowledge of Mexico and then tell them 20 years later that they must go back to Mexico, which is what is going on, then that is an entirely different story. This student, like many, grew up here and now is being told that they cannot stay…10-15 years later. I personally know many cases like this, living in SoCal. And when I ask conservatives, they make up stories about the rapists and the ciminals, but they refuse to address these many cases. Then they bash the Dream Act, which is designed to help these cases–correction, only those within these cases smart and hard-working enough to get a college degree. The Republicans do not face reality, but the fantasy of all Mexicans being lazy and criminally minded. The narrative is easier to defend, but it is useless in explaining the reality. Ignorance is bliss, apparently. But it produces something else for the victims of this irrational immigration policy.

The idea of deporting such cases violates two key concepts that inform all Anglo-American jurisprudence of the last 300 years. But maybe you’d be okay with executing the children of jaywalkers.
