Obama to Supporters: ‘We Were Able to Prevent America From Going Into a Great Depression’

There’s no doubt that President Barack Obama, like President George W. Bush, has been dealt a pretty difficult hand: a down economy, oversees military operations, major budgetary constraints — the list goes on.
Despite these challenges, it seems Obama, just one year out from the 2012 presidential election, is pretty confident about his handling of the economy, among other issues.
At a fundraiser at a private home in Washington, D.C., last night, Obama boldly claimed that his administration prevented a total economic meltdown. ”We were able to prevent America from going into a Great Depression,” he said.
“We were able to, after a series of quarterly GDP reports that were the worst that we’ve seen since the Great Depression, reverse it and get the economy to grow again. We’ve seen 20 straight months of consecutive job growth,” Obama continued.
The “we” he’s referring to is likely his administration, which he’s hoping to see re-capture the White House next November. In addition to staking the claim about preventing another Great Depression, Obama went on to praise some of his administration’s other accomplishments.
“We were able to pass health insurance reform, Wall Street reform, end ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’ end the war in Iraq — the list goes on,” he told his audience. His track record, which some conservatives lament, is something he’s very proud of.
Despite praising his team’s handling of the aforementioned issues, he admitted that “huge swaths of the country are still hurting,” and he said, “A lot of people are still struggling out there. And there’s no way in which America right now is fulfilling all of its potential.”
Obama went on to discuss his determination that the nation create a responsive government, reduce deficits, make the school system more viable and implement health care reform, among other proposals. Politics, though, is still in need of some major fixing, he said.
When it comes to the claim that the president’s team prevented another Great Depression, it’s important to note that this statement has been made numerous times before. In June 2010, Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter appeared on Stephen Colbert’s “The Colbert Report,” where he said the following about Obama: “You know, this was, we were all living history. This man prevented another Great Depression. If we had stayed on the course that we were on-”
In September 2010 — just two months later — Obama, himself, made this same claim. “And so I‘m very proud of the fact that we’ve been able to prevent the economy from going into a second depression, but not only do we have a big hole that we’ve got to climb ourselves out of — we still have those 8 million jobs that were lost, and that’s a lot of jobs to make up — the economy is still not growing as fast as it needs to,” he said in a speech in Iowa.
And as early as 2009, the administration was touting its ability to prevent a second Great Depression. Christina Romer, the former Chair of Economic Advisers in the Obama administration, praised Obama’s policies and said they were responsible for preventing this economic calamity. Earlier this year, Investor’s Daily Business tackled these claims, writing, “in claiming to have staved off a Depression, the White House and its supporters seem to be engaging in a bit of historical revisionism.” IBD writes:
Economists weren’t predicting a Depression.
White House economists forecast in January 2009 that, even without a stimulus, unemployment would top out at just 8.8% — well below the 10.8% peak during the 1981-82 recession, and nowhere near Depression-era unemployment levels.
The same month, the Congressional Budget Office predicted that, absent any stimulus, the recession would end in “the second half of 2009.” The recession officially ended in June 2009, suggesting that the stimulus did not have anything to do with it.
With the election just one year away and with economic fears kicked up into high gear, it makes sense why the president, the administration and its followers would claim that the stimulus and other measures taken prevented collapse. However, whether these statements are valid is up for debate and discussion.
Clearly, there are two sides to the story and with the situation still remaining grim, it’s hardly time to declare victory, regardless of where one stands politically.

The eventual collapse of our economy is imminent, all they’re doing now is putting a band aid over the gun shot wound in hopes to keep the country alive for a few more years. Nothing he did, nor will not, nor what the next NEOCON that is elected will ever do, will actually fix out country. In the long run, we’re all doomed.
I truly wish most of you would see that Cain, Romney, Perry, Newt…. none of them will really fix anything. I wish America, our conservatives out there, would vote for Ron Paul. He is the only one that will stand up to those that wish to destroy our country and actually TRY real solutions to fix our nations problems. Will it hurt? Absolutely. Will we all have to take a pay cut? Absolutely. There is NO easy way out of this mess and no one else is willing to make the necessary sacrifices to insure our nation prospers for generations to come.

The only difference between today and the great depression is semantics – deflation did not occur. Deflation did not occur because the federal reserve printed gobs of money, keeping prices out of reach of the poor. It hurt people a lot worse, but it looks better on paper. Greedy Politicians in the spring of 1913 passed two amendments to the Constitution. Amendment 16 allowed the Fed Gov to collect taxes directly from citizens, and Amendment 17 stripped away a State’s right to appoint Senators to Congress. Stripping POWER away from the States, and creating the uncontrollable, corrupt, overbearing Fed Gov we have today.
Here are 3 actions we must insist on:
(1) Restore States’ Power by REPELLING the AMENDMENTS passed in the 1910’s that allowed the Fed Gov to tax citizens directly and stopped the States from appointing Senators,
(2) CREATE A NEW TAX SYSTEM where States collect 100% of taxes and then forwards a percentage of that money to the Fed Gov. Percentage is based on State’s population,
(3) REDUCE THE FED GOV’S SPENDING to include only military defense, foreign relations, and responsibilities initially outlined in the Constitution then individual States would take over all other spending.
DO FUTURE GENERATIONS A FAVOR PICKUP AN ACCURATE HISTORY BOOK AND READ IT!!!!!

When they did their gross “seasonal addjustment” that was basically writing people off the total workforce, that’s how they got their precipitous drop from the end of one year to the beginning of the next. It’s been a farce and a fraud all along.

Obama’s birth certificate contains many anomalies justifying further investigation by law enforcement, as does his social security number. Both are alleged to be fraudulent by numerous experts. However even if the alleged fraud had gone unnoticed and it’s assumed he was born in HI, Obama is still not Constitutionally eligible.
Article 2, Section 1, requires the President to be a natural born citizen. This involves two equally important prerequisites. The first is being born in the USA or sovereign US jurisdiction. The second is being born to US citizen parents (plural). Both prerequisites must be satisfied. Obama absolutely failed to meet one prerequisite at birth and maybe both. He does not have TWO US citizen parents! Therefore he is not eligible.

Not the Constitution, not any law or act of Congress, and definitely not the Supreme Court! When they finally ruled on the issue back in 1898, they said just the opposite – it doesn’t matter who your parents are as long as you‘re born here. Other than your deliberate misinterpretation of an irrelevant Supreme Court decision that both predates their 1898 ruling, and specifically says that it is not setting a precedent or establishing a complete and exclusive definition of natural born citizenship, on what do you base this strange belief?

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 5:12pmYou talk about truth and deceit, yet you have never been able to demonstrate the imagined untruth of any statement I have made, nor have you ever shown the existence of any law or court decision backing up your contention that some citizens born in this country are not natural born citizens, or that the phrase natural born citizen has ever meant anything other than a citizen by birth.
By the way, if anyone is surprised to learn that Michael Savage has a Ph.D., it is true. He holds a doctorate in nutritional ethnomedicine, and I will respectfully yield to his greater expertise when it comes to any opinions he might express on that subject.
