Obama: ‘We Don’t Have a Stronger Friend and Stronger Ally’ Than France

Understandably, news of French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s visit to the United States has been overshadowed by the events in Tucson. So when during a joint press conference yesterday Barack Obama slipped into diploma-speak and said “we don’t have a stronger friend and stronger ally” than France, not many people picked up on it. But some did — especially those in Britain.

“We don’t have a stronger friend and stronger ally than Nicolas Sarkozy, and the French people,” Obama said while seated next to the French president:

To be fair, it could just be a case of inflated praise regularly poured on visiting dignitaries. While we may not have a “stronger” ally, maybe all our allies are equally as strong. But that’s not how some in Britain are interpreting the comment.

Headlines in some British news outlets show the president’s statement raised more than a few eyebrows. The Daily Mail put it this way:

Obama: We Dont Have a Stronger Friend and Stronger Ally Than France

While the Telegraph commented:

Obama: We Dont Have a Stronger Friend and Stronger Ally Than France

“Quite what the French have done to merit this kind of high praise from the US president is difficult to fathom, and if the White House means what it says this represents an extraordinary sea change in US foreign policy,” political analyst Nile Gardiner writes in the Telegraph. “Nicolas Sarkozy is a distinctly more pro-American president than any of his predecessors, and has been an important ally over issues such as Iran and the War on Terror. But to suggest that Paris and not London is Washington’s strongest partner is simply ludicrous.”

Gardiner is especially flummoxed by the statement considering Sarkozy has previously called Obama “thin skinned and authoritarian.” He’s also puzzled considering the amount of troops Britain has committed to current American conflicts in comparison to France:

Today in the war against the Taliban there are more than 10,000 British troops fighting alongside their US allies, compared to 3,850 Frenchmen. Nearly 350 British soldiers have laid down their lives in Afghanistan in contrast to French losses of 53.

Gardiner has noticed other anti-British actions coming from the Obama administration in the past. He’s even outlined the top 10 snubs.

“These kinds of presidential statements matter,” Gardiner adds. “No US president in modern times has described France as America’s closest ally, and such a remark is not only factually wrong but also insulting to Britain, not least coming just a few years after the French famously knifed Washington in the back over the war in Iraq.”

Gardiner isn’t the only one.

“I’m getting a bit fed up with the American President using terms like ‘best ally’ so loosely,” Tory politician Patrick Mercer told the Daily Mail. “It’s Britain that has had more than 300 servicemen killed in Afghanistan, not France.”

“That to my mind is a lot more powerful than any political gesture making.”

France helped us immeasurably in the Revolution against Great Britain. See: marquis Lafayette, comte de Rochambeau, and L’Enfant. Now we are apologizing to GB for losing BFF status because we don’t think France did enough to help themselves in WWII. This is why we shouldn’t have a “Best” or “Closest” anything. It only weakens us when times change. We are allies, or we are not. “Closest” ally only serves to step on diplomatic toes. 10 year old girls know the folly of the “Best Friend”.

Back in April it was reported that after a visit, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that obama is INSANE. According to this report, Sarkozy was “appalled” at Obama’s “vision” of what the World should be under his “guidance” and “amazed” at the American Presidents unwillingness to listen to either “reason” or “logic”.

Obama is not a Muslim. Muslims are very devout and cannot hide their faith. Obama may SYMPATHIZE with Muslims, but he is not one, at least not a practicing one.

I think Obama treats God like he does everything else. He uses God in the most expedient manner for his purposes. If that demands he be a Christian then he will do that. If it means siding with Muslims then he has no qualms there either. I do not believe he is an atheist, but I would bet he is a kind of deist in his own beliefs. I do not think Obama thinks about God too much and probably rejects God playing any part in the course of human endeavor.

It is an interesting question, one I often think about. I may have Obama pegged entirely wrong, I know Beck has him into this collective salvation thing. I believe Obama legitimately believes what he has heard from Wright and others is mainstream Christianity and he regurgitates it because he believes that is what Americans want to hear. I do not think Obama even understands the gospel message or has ever tried to understand. He is too full of himself.

Snow – you are dead on about Obama hating Brittan. In his formative years, he bought into everything his father believed – anti-colonialism in every facet. If I’m not mistaken, the oppressor his father fought against was the British Empire. Whether or not the UK is now turning socialist by the day, he still holds the same views towards them. The other nation he was raised to despise was Israel, and we can see how our ties with them have been eroded over the past two years. Let us not forget America is the largest of his “oppressors”, and the reason he is content with diminishing american power and leadership on the world stage. Stunning that a man who shows such contempt for America and her staunchest allies is the POTUS. Or should I say, sickening.

Let’s give BO the benefit of the doubt on this one, maybe – just maybe he meant strongest SMELLING friend and ally. If so, I would agree.

UK, AUS, CAN and NZL have our backs… despite what our POOTUS has to say. On behalf of US citizens please disregard the buffoon masquerading as our President

Second that!!!! France has got to be the most duplicitous nation on earth. Think their comportment under the Vichy regime, acting “compassionate” by taking the Ayatollah in from his Iraqi exile, providing him with a castle, guards and a radio station to broadcast his message to Iran, stating publicly that they were working behind the scenes to help the US out of the hostage crisis while they were negotiating with the Ayatollah to build a nuclear plant, and so forth and so on.

Our President’s waffling on full display for the world to see. Britain is the dog feces on his shoe, whilst France is regarded in the highest possible fashion.
This truly makes the mind wobble. Is this his version of moving to the center?
I really shouldn’t be surprised after he returned the bust of Churchill and presented the Queen with an iPod of his speeches.

England already knows. Within days of taking office, Obama sent a bust of Churchill, which was a gift from England back to London because the British imprisoned and beat a member of his family many years ago. I’m sure they are anxious for 2012 to get here, too.

Obama continues to say and do ANYTHING he can to DESTROY our Country’s “STANDING” with our
real friends. IF France were such a loyal supporter of America, WHY did they insist on getting GOLD
at $32.00/oz. from us in exchange for Federal Reserve Notes (dollars) spent in France during WWII?
WHY did France NEVER REPAY THEIR DEBT TO AMERICA in Gold or any thing? Obama continues to talk in utter IGNORANCE of facts. OBAMA DOES NOT SPEAK FOR ME.

Back in the old days, a French soldier ran into a British soldier and asked “Why are your coats red?“ to which the Bristish soldier replied ”In case we are wounded, we do not want the blood showing and disheartening our fellow soldiers…May I ask why your pants are brown?“ to which the French soldier replied ”Well…for almost the same reason.”

Can this guy take a stance on anything, or does he always have to pander?

The UK is our best diplomatic ally. Japan is (more was, really, but you can’t trust China) our best economic ally.

I‘m sure he’d tell the leader of any nation that we have no stronger ally than their country though, so that way everybody wins!

He puts down our allies because he probably considers them to be imperialists, we know how he feels about England and Israel by his past deeds. One day this man’s tenure will run out, and I truly hope our allies will forgive us for electing him to office. In our defense, the media hid his true character from our view so we would vote for him.

When he said “our” he meant his administration and when he said “strongest friend.. ally” he was referring to the sovereign Islamic suburbs of France… the ones that are under Sharia law which the French police have surrendered to Muslims. It makes perfect sense.

@RN Mom, we have no defense. The media did their best to hide who Obama is before the elections, but there were plenty of people shouting it from the rooftops and not enough people listened. Fox is Media and they told us. I for one posted hourly on every forum I could manage with links to MOUNTAINS of evidence against the man, and was blocked, ignored, ridiculed, cursed…even still to this day no bad word can be “heard” about him by his supporters. We have no defense. We hired him. Whether we voted for him or not – he does speak for us. God help us.

It is because those two are the court jesters here. They are foolish and hateful and one day people may be wrestling guns out of their hands too. They are accurate representatives of what is wrong with this country. When people mention them they are just reminding everyone of the stupidity that exists in the world. It is never a good idea to ignore crazy people. One day they may arm themselves.
