Obama’s Ag Sec: You Know What Creates Jobs? Food Stamps

Last week, Press Secretary Jay Carney mad the bold — and odd — claim that unemployment checks create jobs (see the comment and how one blogger proves it wrong here). Well, it seems the government-welfare-programs-create-jobs mantra is becoming a popular mantra, as now Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack went on MSNBC Tuesday morning to make the case that food stamps are job creators.

Yes, Vilsack actually calls the food stamp program an “economic stimulus:”

If that sounds familiar, it’s because Vilsack used some of the exact same language Carney used last week. Are you sensing a new talking point?

After you take a few deep breaths and wipe the confused look off your face, read how Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey exposes Vilsack’s — and the administration’s — logic:

So here’s the question. If food stamps create jobs, like Vilsack says here, and we’re putting record numbers of Americans on food stamps, then why aren’t we seeing record job creation? If every dollar spent on food stamps creates $1.84 in production, as Vilsack argues, and the number of food stamp recipients keeps rising, then why haven’t the GDP numbers reflected that fabulous growth?

So what about that multiplier Vilsack claims? The one that says every dollar spent on food stamps leads to $1.84 in production? Yeah, Morrissey has something to say about that, too:

The multiplier effect is completely bogus.  For one thing, much of the money gets absorbed by the government bureaucracies that manage these programs.  Second, as I alluded earlier, the evidence we see all around us shows us that we can’t get economic growth through government welfare programs.  If what Vilsack said was true, we’d be better off seizing all income and handing out food stamps.

You can read the rest of Morrissey’s thoughts here.

Author Brad Thor asked an interesting question after hearing Vilsack’s thoughts: “By this big gov’t reasoning, should we lighten up on bank robbers as they end up putting the $$ they steal back into the economy?”

Good question.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to get those people off of food stamps so that they can use a PAYCHECK to pay for all those things? A robust economy where no one is on foodstamps and using their own money to purchase goods put significantly more money into the economy that foodstamps ever did.

Okay, I thought tax breaks for the “job creators” (the super wealthy) created jobs. Bush did it. It didn’t create jobs. Those tax cuts are still in effect, and not creating jobs. Many companies are making record profits, yet aren’t hiring. And all I hear doing more of the same things that led to the crash in 2007. Isn’t that the definition of insanity?

      shy,
That’s not only false it borderline discriminatory!

Listen people, i get that what was said sounds ridiculous, but the premise is true. The way to stimulate the economy is to give the money to the people who will spend it. If you send stimulus checks out to everyone, the majority will not spend it in down economic times. If you give money to someone in need they will automatically spend it on basic needs. With regards to food stamps they can only be used on certain and very specific items so the money will be put back into the economy immediately.

I wouldn’t call it a stimulus by any means, but every cent of food stamp money is spent and does keep the economy moving in a way…Hate it or not it is a fact…

Obamacare, the dodd/frank bill, the epa, the Interior dept, the prospect of the current tax rates expiring on a whim, the death of the energy industry, and a whole litany of unknown penalties that obama has already put into laws but the details havent been written yet,, why as a business, would you take on more liability in hiring, expanding right now… ask any business owner or ceo… do you NOT read the papers? Its the UNCERTAINTY OF OBAMAS HIDDEN PENALTIES that are forcing businesses to cut back and put on Hiring freezes!! news flash… People dont create businesses just for the kind gesture of HIRING people,… they hire people to expand their prosperity, and after dissecting the data of todays climate.. they are forced to Hold, cut back and wait. get it? 1.7 percent: Increase in the number of private sector jobs nationally with the addition of 1.8 million jobs from 107.4 million in July 2010 to 109.2 million last month.

-2.4 percent: Decline in government jobs nationally with the loss of 547,000 jobs from 22.6 million in July 2010 to 22 million last month.

Food stamps do nothing credible for any economy. Moving taxpayer money around in circles doesn’t support an economy. It stagnates it. Asking for more food stamps exacerbates the problem it doesn’t stablize it, nor does it begin to alleviate it. There is no credible foundation to make the assertion that “more food stamps create jobs”. A community dependent on food stamps would see jobs leave the area not retain them. Clearly you have no credible grasp of how economies work Thomasdaddy. “prefer a circle to a deadend”? Tax money is fickle. It’s at the whim of politicians and the number of taxpayers (so much for more food stamps). That “circle” you’re “preferring” is a very tenuous one that can break at any time. As earlier when you were quoting Huffpo about Obama’s public sector job “reduction” without acknowledging why those jobs were cut..TAX MONEY was no longer available to pay for them. So what’s your answer for them? more food stamps? It is

Your problem is you don’t “get it straight” or get it at all Thomasdaddy. Obama’s stimulus (1 and 2) attempted to expand government and buttress the unions. Billions of dollars to “shovel ready jobs” that Obama admitted “shovel ready wasn’t as shovel ready as we expected”. Obamacare also expanded government beaurocracy. Government jobs have been getting cut not because of a concentrated policy by Obama to cut them, but because tax money has run out at the federal, state and local levels to keep the jobs. I‘m temped to say that even you couldn’t be that stupid as to attempt to state that Obama has made policy to cut government jobs but clearly…you are that stupid. I never once claimed that food stamps create jobs! Never! If you can find it copy and paste where I said that! I merely stated that food stamps share the same basic premise of economic stimulus which is put money in the hands of the people who will spend it. 100% of food stamps that are issued are spent on food!!!!!!! That money sinks into the economy becoming that “circle” you keep talking about! My point is, and has been since we started this, that it‘s an entitlement that actually doesn’t drag on the economy if the tax money goes in a “CIRCLE”! Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security pay out more than they are taking in and are huge deficit expenses! I don‘t like placing Social Security in that category because you have to pay into it in order to receive benefits but it’s a deficit expense.

If food stamps are such a great thing, why then do the recipients sell them for 50 cents on the dollar for CASH? This little racket is big business in many areas. Maybe that’s the “stimulus” Vilsack was talking about.

First they must take it from my paycheck to give to someone else. That means that I dont have that very same dollar to buy “more” food with so how exactly does it mean any more work? I hate being in the supermarket and seeing that fat woman buying food, that I no longer can afford, with her foodstamp card and the only word she speaks in english is when the cashier asks is it a debit card or foodstamp and she replies… foodstamp. ****** me off to no end. Get a job.

Agree!! It makes so much more sense to stop giving stuff to folks at other people’s expense. Offer them a job and if they refuse, they’re on their own. Don’t understand forever unemployment, forever food stamps, etc. These things are supposed to be a “leg up” not a way of life. These entitlements should be curtailed.

Of course he said this. He takes his marching orders from above, and it has been deemed that this fraud of a claim is the New Talking Point. Every department, sooner or layer, will mimic this without fail. These are not intelligent people, folks.

    >>Last week, Press Secretary Jay Carney mad the bold — and odd — claim that unemployment checks create jobs <<

I've offered before, Blaze Staff, and I'll say it again. I have an English degree with a focus on technical and fiction writing, which included classes about editing and proofreading. If you need assistance, please feel free to drop me an email, I'd be happy to lend a hand. I don't make perfect posts, but then again my posts are not posited as final draft, proofed copy ready for publication, they're more, shall we say, off the cuff and without revision.

[Sic]"mad the bold", by the way, is the offending phrase.

At this pace, if 100% of us were on welfare, food stamps, or unemployment, we’d all be “employed”, right? “Employed” as paid democrat voters on the government dole. But wait…where does the government’s money come from anyway—oh yeah, the printing press!

Its absurd and biggest problem with this admin is its all book worms and professors with NO real world experience. Anyone with a slight clue knows food stamps do not create jobs.

I know what they are implying here, that one who receives that stamps will spend them at a store. The store they spend the stamps at has increased business thus needs more product (more orders from vendors) The store being busier needs to hire more people = job creations! The same domino effect is theorized through the vendors, suppliers, mfg’rs etc! See theres your job creation!

Problem is there is NO MONEY to do this b/c the govt and this nation IS BANKRUPT! Oh wait I know where they will get the money from taxing the evil rich and evil rich corporations to help the poor on food stamps! Follow kids do you see what they are setting up! http://SavingtheRepublic.com

A LETTER FROM A PROCTER AND GAMBLE EXECUTIVE TO THE PRESIDENT*

Lou Pritchett is one of corporate America ‘s true living legends- an acclaimed author, dynamic teacher and one of the world’s highest rated speakers. Successful corporate executives everywhere recognize him as the foremost leader in change management. Lou changed the wayAmerica does business by creating an audacious concept that came to be known as “partnering.” Pritchett rose from soap salesman to Vice-President, Sales and Customer Development for Procter and Gamble and over the course of 36 years, made corporate history.

AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA

    Dear President Obama:

You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll.

You scare me because you have never had military experience, thus

Obama and the democrats will not take the debt or spending seriously..EVER. This is why they keep repeating unemployment benefits create jobs..food stamps create jobs. They are facing their failure and they don’t know what to do. To change course is to admit the GOP was right and to alienate their far left voting base. So they keep repeating the same failed policies. OBAMA DOESN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!! He surrounded himself with “professors” that live in a bubble away from the real world as his advisors. Corruptocrat Valerie Jarret is his senior advisor.

Take a look at this gem from Clyburn who was just appointed to the farcical super committee-

      From Investors Business Daily:

The Congressional Black Caucus is trying to hijack the agenda of the super-committee appointed to tackle the deficit. The move confirms our fear that the panel will become an overly politicized joke.

A senior black caucus member, Democrat Rep. Jim Clyburn, announced he’s going to use his position on the 12-member supercommittee to close the growing “wealth gap” between blacks and whites. By that, he means working with the five other Democrats on the panel to raise taxes on the rich and redistribute money to poor minorities.

I think he’s thinking of the WPA from depression times (but we aren’t in a depression, right?) Except that they didn’t pay one to dig and ditch and then fill it in. They repaired roads, built out-houses for schools (before indoor plumbing), etc. My grandpa split a job with another guy. He worked half the day and another man came in and relieved him. That way they both got some employment. The problem today is all these assistance programs take the shame out of depending on the government. it’s become bragging rights. Look what I can scam the government out of.
