BOSTON (AP) — President Barack Obama’s aunt, who lived for years illegally in Boston, said in her first interview since being granted asylum that the United States has an “obligation” to grant her citizenship.
“If I come as an immigrant, you have the obligation to make me a citizen,” Zeituni Onyango told WBZ-TV in an interview that first aired Monday.
Onyango came to the U.S. from Kenya in 2000 and was denied asylum by an immigration judge in 2004. She was granted asylum in May by the same judge who said she could be in danger if she returned to her homeland.
She said she had intended to return to Kenya but fell critically ill and was hospitalized. When she was discharged, she was penniless and lived in a homeless shelter for two years.
She told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview last December that she was paralyzed for more than three months because of an autoimmune disorder called Guillain-Barre syndrome and had to learn to walk again.
“To me, America‘s dream became America’s worst nightmare,” she said.
It was after her illness, she said, that she was assigned public housing.
“I didn’t ask for it; they gave it to me,” she said.
She said she resented being used to attack her nephew, who has never intervened in her immigration case. “Don’t drag my child into it,” she said.
She said she feels as if she’s been treated as “public enemy No. 1″ since her residency status went public.
Onyango, the half sister of Obama’s late father, still lives in public housing and collects $700 monthly disability. She doesn’t work, but said she volunteers time at the Boys and Girls Club and with the Boston Housing Authority.

Posted on September 21, 2010 at 3:59pmI am so sorry for her situation. Too often, people who have experienced serious emotion situations are lost in the “system” and network of various charitable organizations that exist to assist those in refugee status.
I know firsthand, as a service volunteer, how much each state in the nation depends on the religious organizations in their areas to subsidize what the gov’t is not handing out. While I don’t know the full legal “benefits” of being a refugee, I have observed how the African refugees I work with and around are brought over to the country via a religious charity, then set up in apartments fully paid for two years, furnished, clothed, fed and given spending money by charities, not the US gov’t.
The unfortunate situation is that these refugees are not “integrated” into the communities they live in, they are not taught what is acceptable in a society, and they often, if not frequently, are lost to the fact that American’s are taught to take care of themselves, get a job, learn how to be a contributing member of society.
They often become angry, not grateful, for everything that they’ve already received. If we had the resources to educate them how to dress for their new environment, how to shop in a store, use the money system, shower and learn how to bath in the new bathing facilities they didn’t have in Africa, clean and maintain cleanliness in a house, cook with the food in the stores, and then help them learn how to work in a job, they would most certainly feel gratitude, because the people I’ve worked with have huge hearts; we just can’t speak to each other because I don’t know their dialect of African and they don’t speak English (yet.).
They experience the opposite – they are TAUGHT that America SHOULD take care of them (because up to now they have THOUGHT that the gov’t has taken care of them, not aware that the organization was actually a religious charity that has taken care of them) and after their two years of all expenses paid for, they’re shocked, unprepared, and often left on the streets because they just haven‘t had the lesson and awareness communicated to them that the gov’t doesn‘t pay your way just because you’re here.
I‘m confident that these people would feel more generosity because they know that it isn’t a bad system gone wrong – becoming their nightmare.

If that were the case, and she admitted that the American’s are paying her bills, she would feel a sense of obligation and she’s just too warped and crazy to even want to look there. Very sad, and very greedy, and very mislead…… I believe in God and I have to work, pay my own bills, etc. Her bills are probably being paid via “an anonymous donor” or aka her relatives PLUS the broken American welfare system.

While a “beloved” family member lives far below the poverty level in public housing? By comparison, and I am no fan of the Clintons, they paid taxes on over $100 million dollars in the same year and donated over 20% of that to charity. I realize they made big money, but 20% is a huge percentage to give from your income when you are not forced to do so. Many other wealthy people, all over the political spectrum and many more who are not politically involved at all donate huge sums, but the obamas can barely scrape up $25K from $5.4 million and leave their own flesh and blood to live in poverty, That just about says it all, perfectly clearly. As an illegal, she recieved free public housing, medical care when she became ill, and certainly countless other benefits. I’d be curious to see the total cost of supporting just this one illegal immigrant in our country for 10 years. multiply that by the hundreds of thousands of illegals just like her, and its easy to see why all of our support systems are thoroughly strained. I’d rather be giving the aid to US citizens who need it. Her story is a perfect example of how the system is broken, on all levels. I don’t feel sorry for her one bit – If she had simply gone through the immigration process as it is meant to be, she would have long ago been a citizen, and in the meantime, saved the taxpayer a boatload of money.

They are told what they need to say and report to be able to get something from our broken system. They can get food stamps, free food, free clothing, Medicaid/Medicare, free money to get a skill at tech school or any other education option they want (FREE)…Then they have special summer money to put them to work in the summer doing practically nothing and the government pays them. They don’t have to do anything for it except maybe scam a bit on the application depending on their circumstances. The workforce boards in every county and every state have employees who help people scam to get these benefits. They try and get as many numbers as they can each month to increase their funding each year. They have to spend every penny so they can ask for more. The workforce boards even receive incentives from the government if they spend more each year. They recruit at homeless shelters, abuse shelters, schools for youth and the boys and girls clubs. They are all taught about how this money is for them. It is the wrong message and it has become an entitlement program. It’s disgraceful.

I would personally like to see Obama take this woman into his own home, take care of her and help her to ACTUALLY GO THROUGH THE LEGAL CITIZENSHIP PROCESS without any special favors from Obama. What do ya think, folks? THINK THAT WILL EVER HAPPEN? I’d be dreaming.

Posted on September 22, 2010 at 3:40amHere‘s what I don’t get…she was here on vacation and overstayed because she got ill; I get that. But then she was ordered to leave twice, ten asked for and got asylum. If she didn’t ask for it initially, why would asylum even be allowable?
I have some interesting stories regarding legal immigration in my family, but I won’t bore you with them. Bottom line is that this woman is a poster child for what is wrong with our country’s immigration and social welfare systems.
