Obama’s Contraceptive Mandate Goes Into Effect Today: ‘Cherished Liberty…Thrown in a Gov‘t Dumpster’

For months, we’ve heard about the controversial contraceptive mandate. And now, after intense debate, no-cost birth control will officially be offered — by government directive — in employer health care plans starting today, August 1, 2012. Since its announcement, the mandate, which continues to be heralded by President Barack Obama, has been contentious for a variety of reasons.

(Related: 150 Christian Leaders Send Protest Letter Accusing Obama Admin of Creating ‘Two-Class Religious Scheme’)

To begin, many big government opponents believe that federal officials shouldn’t be in the business of dictating what private companies cover. Furthermore, with affordable options available for birth control purposes, some wonder why a no co-pay, no contribution system is a necessity (after all, there are numerous life-saving drugs that aren’t currently being mandated).

On the religious front, church-affiliated groups have made their stance known. Since January, relations between the Obama administration and faith communities, particularly the Catholic Church, have declined substantially. These groups do not believe that it is sensible, constitutional or proper for the federal government to dictate what faith-based institutions should include in health plans.

Furthermore, the Catholic Church stands firmly opposed to birth control, thus creating a situation in which the faith-affiliated employers would be forced to violence conscience in order to comply with the law.

While these issues continue to be considered and debated, the mandate has gone into full effect today, but with one caveat; religious institutions have been given an additional year to come up with a compromise with administration officials.

Originally, Obama’s plan would have exempted all churches, while requiring universities, hospitals and social service groups with an attachment to religious institutions to comply. But after an uproar, these latter institutions were given the additional year to sort through issues and concerns.

Already, legal battles have unfolded with a victory resulting for those supporting the mandate and another for those opposing it. Interestingly, religious colleges are among those seeking to stop with mandate, with the University of Notre Dame standing as one of the latest to join in the fight.

Despite the ongoing church versus state drama, the mandate, today, is in effect for most new and renewing health insurance plans. A variety of health care services (a full list can be found here) — many of which are benign and relatively uncontroversial — are included on the required list.

Shirking the controversy surrounding the regulation, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius took to Capitol Hill on Tuesday and praised the new regulations going into effect.

“Surveys showed that more than half the women in this country delayed or avoided preventive care because of its cost,” she explained, surrounded by senators who voted for the health care bill.

“All new insurance plans will be required to cover additional services and tests for women, with no out-of-pocket costs, including domestic violence screenings, FDA-approved contraception, breast feeding counseling and supplies, and a well woman visit, where she can sit down and talk with her health care provider,” she added.

Not everyone shared such a positive view on the matter. Take, for instance, Matt Smith, president of the Catholic Advocate.

“August 1st will be remembered as the day our most cherished liberty was thrown in a government dumpster and hauled away,” he said on the eve of the mandate’s effective date. “A day when family-owned small businesses were forced to abandon their religious beliefs to provide products and services for free.”

Clearly, the debate is far from over. And judging from the rhetoric coming from both sides, the next year of negotiations between faith groups and the federal government will be less-than-pleasant.

“The church” is NOT “the church”. The church you speak of is a man made corporation/religion. WE CHRISTIANS are “the church”. The so called “preachers” are too caught up in the 5013c and their money to pretend to care whats going on. Read “Tortured for Christ” (great book) by Richard Wormbrand who said:
” Communism is a tremendous foe of Christianity and MOST dangerous. Against it we must unite! The highest goal of man is to become Christlike. To prevent this is the main aim of communists. They are primarily anti-religious. They believe after death man becomes salt and minerals, nothing else, They desire the whole life to be lived on the level of matter.”

Im beginning to think that America should conduct an experiment and have the conservative states live their way and the Liberal states live their way for the next 4 or so years and see which side fares better so than all people can see for themselves what they believe in and want to get them selves into. the red states will get poorer (if that’s even possible) and the blue states will do even better. blue states may not want red states back in after 4 years, so careful what you wish for.

currently, based on GDP per capita, here are the bottom ten (as of 2010):

Mississippi, Idaho, West VA, S. Carolina, New Mexico, Alabama, Arkansas, Montana, Kentucky.

What your implicit argument boils down to is this: You like brownies. O’bama offers you some brownies with ¼ tsp of his “secret ingredient”. You say, “Well, I like brownies, so I’ll eat this one, even if I don’t like dog poop, just so I can get the chocolate.”

O‘bama didn’t pay for the brownies, he robbed someone else of the money to buy the ingredients. O‘bama didn’t make the brownies, he forced a baker down the street to do that. He took the brownies, he gave them to you and wants the credit for it.

Now, there is another person who likes brownies, too, but who, after discovering the “secret ingredient”, decides he doesn’t want to eat them. But O’bama pulls a gun (the National Guard or the FBI, or the local sheriff) and says, “Eat this, and like it!”

I think I‘d prefer dying to eating O’bama’s brownies, especially if the alternative is becoming O‘bama’s slave.

I‘m against paying for someone else’s STD screenings, and somewhat against paying for cervical cancer testing, since the highest likely reason for someone to get cervical cancer is by multiple sexual contact.

I’m also against the government taking my money without my consent. The poor is the job of the church and the people, not the government. I want to donate to the charities I know and trust. If there is one place that is the last I trust to use my money wisely, it’s the government.

“… against _these_ things?” No! Why did you even imagine anyone was “against these things?”

What we oppose is forcing someone else to pay for them, and forcing anyone to act against his convictions, especially religious convictions. Since you have no religious convictions, it is impossible for you to see how important it is to those who do.

But even you could grasp (I hope, at least) that if someone were to rape you (irrespective of whether you are male or female), it would be a fundamental violation of your rights as an individual. This is no less a violation of the same kinds of rights. We feel exactly the same way about it. If there were a law requiring that you submit to being raped, because sex, for instance, reduces prostate cancer rates in men, you would rightly oppose it (I assume — it is, after all, a health issue, you might support it). Why do you support rape of a different nature, that is, the violation of someone’s fundamental human right to believe as he chooses?

Further, I bear no responsibility for anyone else’s choices. If a woman chooses to engage in procreative activity, she must recognize that she and her mate always run the risk of conceiving a child: that’s the nature of sexual intercourse. If either of them doesn’t WANT a child, they should take appropriate action to avoid it:
      No one else chose.
No one else has the pleasure.
No one else should pay for it.

BTW, just because people oppose the abortifacients and contraceptives part of O‘bamaDon’tCare, does not mean that he opposes health care (which O‘bamaDon’tCare doesn’t guarantee at all: what it guarantees is that people have health insurance, and they are NOT the same thing).

Actually, O‘bamaDon’tCare pretty well guarantees that people will have health insurance, but will NOT have health care. It‘s the LAW of Supply’n’Demand. No Congress and no President can repeal that LAW: it’s been around since the first man picked up a stick and used to to pull an apple from a tree.

Ya know, Atheist, I am against the idea that there are people who are homeless out there and people who do not have enough to eat.

Therefore, the government should give everyone in this country free housing and food.

      You stated:

“pap smears to detect cervical cancer, to STD screenings, to other kinds of cancer screenings, to gestational diabetes testing if you`re pregnant, to breast feeding supplies if you’re a new mom.

is anyone here against these things?”

I hope that you are seeing the flaw in your logic. Traipsing through the streets, flinging flowers and good thoughts to everyone isn’t very productive, since it tends to bankrupt the person who is paying for the housing and food. Likewise, while you statement is loaded with ‘goodwill feelings’, the fact of the matter is that, at the end of the day, it is a question of money.

It is also a question of freedom. It is an employer’s right to determine what is in their healthcare plan, not the government’s. While you are desiring is a socialist government, where businesses and the individual no longer has rights.

Simply put: the only way for your desire for this plan to continue is for our current government to completely ignore the U.S. Constitution….

oh, wait…I forgot…they ARE ignoring the Constitution!

I think you should drive as fast as you like. As soon as you destroy person or property you should be held accountable…not in a current criminal system kind of way but seriously accountable.

I‘d bet you that over the long haul in a system where people are held accountable that personal responsibility would be the norm and we wouldn’t have speed limits in the form that they exist now. You see, you operate under the assumption that man can’t regulate himself and needs the government to regulate for him. Which has it’s own problem since the falability of man is inherent in a government of man. But I digress. I believe that mankind can regulate itself. I believe in freedom, accountability and responsibility. I believe in a world with real consequences without excuses. I believe that a ruling class forcing people to labor for the benefit of others is slavery and those who support that are morally reprehensible.

This has nothing to do with government intrusion and everything to do with interstate commerce and the provision of health insurance. The variation across states in terms of cost and what is and isn’t covered is a glaring example of ideology, politics and big insurance money driving policy as opposed to economics and rationality. People think that insurance companies should cover $ million dollar bills for grossly deformed or fatally ill babies who will die within months of birth, but balk at covering contraception. Rather than be rational and come to grips with the FACT that 1/3 of Medicare costs are spent in the 6 months of life, idiotic politicians argue about privatizing Medicare, a situation that even the Health Insurance companies would not want. Driving public policy based on ideology or faith is the epitome of ignorance and arrogance.

The smart people have offshore accounts which pay much higher interest rates than do American banks. This is legal so long a you pay tax on the interest earned.
Why not transfer your funds to an offshore foreign bank, so that you can refuse to pay for services condemned by your religious beliefs, and prevent the government from getting their grubby hands on your funds, safely tucked away in a foreign bank?

Okay how bout giving big $ grants for solar plants only to have the CEO’s take the money and run??? How bout foreign money to help the very same people who would wipe us all out if they had a chance? How bout shipping our jobs overseas? H.E.L.L.O have you called COMCAST cable lately??? My american Vets and brothers and sisters don‘t have work but I can’t even understand what they are saying when I call my local cable company! How bout we help those who fought for this country? Better yet..why don’t we stop playing games with peoples lives!? “Greatest, freest nation”..HAHA It WAS and we need to go back to what made it great and FREE. Don’t look now cause your so called “FREE COUNTRY” is circling the drain!
Say cheese because chances are there is a camera pointed at you right now!

yes I dropped my employees health coverage. I can no longer afford it. I felt so awful I raised everyones pay to what I was paying for their coverage in an attempt to help them cover a portion of the cost which is now out of this world for their individual families.

“Furthermore, the Catholic Church stands firmly opposed to birth control, thus creating a situation in which the faith-affiliated employers would be forced to violence (violate) conscience in order to comply with the law.”

tough noogies. sorry that the gov‘t won’t cave to your Dogma. your own parishioners don’t even follow your Dogma. this whole “violation of conscience” thing is hogwash. if we allow employers to decide what healthcare services they want to pay for it opens the door to all sorts of religious exemptions. it’s a slippery slope.

Sorry to disappoint you PILLDO..but those faith group’s rights are protected by the constitution, regardless of your “eat it” venom you’re spitting.
Now I know you lefties hate the constitution…but it’s there just the same. This is why Obama had to back- peddle from the original wording of the absymal Obamacare and was forced to “mandate” that the providers faith groups use have to pay for the “free” contraceptives, abortions and sterilants” instead.
And of course..if the insurers are paying for it..then the cost is ultimately passed on to the consumer in his/her premiums.
      Keep trying champ.

You should also be wellcome to Romney for a landslide election win in November. You heard of PODS moving systems? You should send about a dozen to Michelle as her husband just alienated his base. Gay marriage? Sealed the deal. Make sure you put those PODS close to the doors of the whitehouse and while you are there, see if Michelle has a good recipe for dog…I think Beau soup is a family favorite!

perhaps they shouldn’t offer healthcare to their employees at all. however, if they choose to do so, they don‘t get to pick and choose what they want to cover and what they don’t. their employees may be of varying religions – the employer doesn’t get to “discriminate” against their employees because of their particular faith. healthcare isn’t a religious issue, it’s as secular as it gets.

“if we allow employers to decide what healthcare services they want to pay for it opens the door to all sorts of religious exemptions. it’s a slippery slope.”

You have just shown yourself in this sentence as to where you stand on the Bill of Rights. These words, if you should decide to look it up for yourself, can be found in the first amendment of the Bill of Rights.

      These words are:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…’

By declaring that a business owner or a religious organization does not have the right to express their morals or beliefs would be depriving these individuals of their first amendment rights. And since all of those people who work for these businesses have the right to leave their job because of their own morals and/or beliefs and seek employment somewhere else, I fail to see any legal standing that the Obama administration has upon forcing this upon any business(es).

In short, this is one of many executive orders from our pathetic excuse for a President that is not Constitutional.

But then again, since when has a liberal given a care about the Constitution?

This “contraception mandate” is a Trojan Horse. This mandate isn’t about “health care” or “fairness” or “womens rights” This mandate is just one step toward de-constructing religious freedom and building the the utopian society that Liberals/Progressives believe in. The Catholic church has always been and always will be opposed to the artificial prevention and destruction of human life and this threatens the Liberal/Progressive vision/agenda. More human beings means more carbon emitters who need health care. Liberals/Progressives know that their vision of universal health care can only succeed if they regulate the creation of human beings (as China does) Liberals/Progressives (and many “Christians”) put more faith in the Government than they do in Almighty God. For them it’s “In Government We Trust” not “In God We Trust” Catholics affirm that the human soul is imparted at conception. Using chemicals that prevent the human fetus from attaching to the wall of the uterus thereby starving the human being to death in the womb is murder. Lord Have Mercy.

90% of the women in the nation already can get free contraceptives if they just take the time to go to their local public health care clinic. Forcing everyone to pay for it again, is just another part of the liberal plan for universal slavery.

He has shown to be an enemy of God and Gods standards and because of this nation will lose the blessings from God unless we turn back to God. It’s not going to work. Look into the EUSSR, this is where this farce will end you at. Sure, the EUSSR has lots of nationalized health care, but what do you get with that? The lowest common denominator. If you want top of the line, up to date, top notch treatments and care… you still have to pay for it yourself. Plus: ridiculous waiting lists. My mother had varix surgery a few years ago. National health care told her “waiting list is one year”. Private hospital told her “when do you want to come?” I had an accident and lost a tooth. The national health care treatment was shoddy at best (and completely wrong in reality, didn’t realize it until I checked.) So I went to the guy who’s professor for dental implant surgery, slammed a few thousand Euro on the table and got a top of the line implant. Totally worth it (same when I had my eyes lasered.) I wouldn’t even have gotten an implant with the nationalized health care, I would have gotten some cheap, low quality replacement, because that’s what “universal health care is”: cutting corners for the patients to pay the fat cat bureaucrats.

You get what you pay for.

Not to mention that pretty much all nationalized health insurances in the EUSSR that I know of are effectively bankrupt and can only survive because the governments put in more money they don’t have.

And, in case you’re wondering, I live in Austria, yep, that’s right in the heart of the “oh so great” neo-socialist EUSSR.
