Obama’s Progressive Pastor Offers Church as Sanctuary to Occupy Protesters

Pastor Jim Wallis Offers Sanctuary to Occupy Protesters

“It’s time to invite the Occupy Movement to church,” or at least according to pastor Jim Wallis it is. You might recall Wallis — a member of President Barack Obama’s faith council and founder of Sojourners ministry. He is also reportedly a spiritual adviser to Obama.

Now, Wallis is also opening the doors to his parish, offering sanctuary to Occupy protesters, while at the same time encouraging other churches across the country to do the same.  According to KleinOnline, Wallis suggested that Thanksgiving is the “perfect occasion” for churches to reach out and offer Occupiers shelter.

Wallis used his church’s magazine as a platform to call for a “church sanctuary for the Occupy movement.” KO adds:

Wallis was appointed in February 2009 to the Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, a White House group replete with advocates for using religion to advance “social justice.”

[...]

“Open our church basements and parish halls as safe places to sleep — shelter and sanctuary as cold weather descends upon many of our cities,” he wrote.

“The Occupy movement needs a sanctuary. And what better safe and welcome place could these young people find than with communities of faith?”

Given reports of Occupiers defecating and urinating both in and on churches across the globe — even using the carpet of St. Paul’s Cathedral as a “latrine” — would the Occupiers really take kindly to being given shelter in houses of worship? Or would the move instead provide vandals easy access to the structures they seek to defile?

Wickedness will call Jesus evil just as it did 2000 years ago. And the really interesting thing is that eventually when Jesus comes again after Gog and Magog are gone, that Christ’s name will not be Jesus, but a new name.

      Believe and be saved
      Sojourners ministry Said,
      Believe and be saved
      and rise from HELL.

      The preacher retired
      to his spacious new home,
      In his humble Mercedes
      with everything chrome.

      He sat in his study,
      his thoughts running deep,
      He dozed for a moment,
      and died in his sleep.

      He ran to Saint Peter
      and wearing a grin,
Said “I believe in the Savior,
      so please let me in”

      “Oh no, not another”,
      said Peter with a sigh,
      the tolls running high.”

      Believing is nothing,
      if nothing is done.
      In getting to Heaven
      you follow the Son.

      To follow a leader,
      you do what is said,
      Faith without works
      is nothing but dead.

      Satan knows Jesus,
      believes in him too.
      So what’s the difference
      between Satan and You?

I am amazed at the behavior and the comments of some here. Many of us may disapprove or intensely disapprove of President Obama’s positions and policies, but he IS a professing Christian, not a follower of Islam. I would think by now the snide comments based on false rumor mongering would have stopped and that people could certainly offer more intelligent criticism.

I also would challenge the notion that The Rev. Jim Wallis is a “progressive pastor” in the sense that of us who are in the ministry would define. Theologically, Rev. Wallis is in the “evangelical” movement and he graduated from a respected conservative, evangelical seminary, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Illinois. This seminary, unlike where I attended (and disliked immensely), is not known as a baton of liberal thought. Wallis, himself, is a “progressive evangelical” in the sense that he shares and affirms faith that most of us identify as “Biblically based evangelical”. It is his interpretation of how Christ calls Christians to live that evangelical faith that inspires Pastor Wallis to support “progressive” social causes and “progressive” social action. While he gets a great deal of support on the “religious left” for his support of Christian social activism, his personal faith is much more aligned with principles held by “American evangelicals” than by many religious leaders on the “religious left”.

Huh? Let me try to decipher this. The left loves him because the guy believes in “Christian social activism,” but, deep down, he really believes like any “American evangelical” — so the left should hate him and we should love him, right?

      @ Kryptonite,
You ask if I am a “non-American, non-evengelical” pastor. No. I’m an American pastor, former Professor, member of the media and former Republican politician. While I share many views in common with many who identify as “evangelical” — for example the divinity of Christ, the need for a personal relationship with Jesus as Lord and Personal Savior, etc., I am not a biblical Literalist (biblical fundamentalist) in that I use modern Biblical scholarship in my teaching, writing and study. Many of my original seminary professors had studied directly under Rudolf Bultmann so I was trained in the use of “form criticism”, “literary criticism” and “historical criticism” in Biblical exegesis. My studies in the Hebrew Scriptures were under professors influenced by the work of Julius Wellhausen, the German scholar of the Hebrew Scriptures.

My own faith is much more akin to many of the “evangelical” conclusions than these professors and I do affirm that the Bible is true but not necessarily historical in all passages and contexts. This puts me outside of the “American evangelical” understanding even if my conclusions about the message and meaning are fairly close to what an identified “American evangelical” might affirm.

It shows the draw of the radical progressive agenda and the methods to “get the masses” to commit suicide collectively. No different than what Wallis is doing with this Occupy idiots movement, and propelling them from his New York City center. My Scripture quote ran out of space, but here’s a link to The New International Version: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2025:31-46&version=NIV .

To comment that Pastor Wallis is supporting “communism” is just plain false. Liberation theology, which was in vogue at many liberal seminaries years ago (including mine) is deeply flawed, but Rev. Wallis motivations come directly out of his deeply held Biblical, evangelical faith. You slander the man to assert otherwise even though you may strongly disagree with his suggestions or assertions.

Like Todd Agnew said in one of his songs, he doubts Jesus would be welcome in his congregation because the blood from his wounds might stain the carpet. I dare say that Jesus might have more problem with the judgement many spout on blogs and in comments both here and on popular talk-radio or cable television.

There is often an underlying judgement of those who are on the lower socioeconomic scale which simply does not reflect the teachings of Jesus no matter how one tries to justify this. Aside from the support of the unborn, I’m not sure that Jesus would see much in the policies and agenda of the “religious and political right” which reflect His teachings. That is probably also true of the agenda and policies of the “religious and political left” which also often distorts Jesus’ teachings to defend particular agendas. Both are wrong and do not properly reflect the Christian faith.

YOU SAID: “To comment that Pastor Wallis is supporting “communism” is just plain false.”

REALLY? Jim Wallis has had relationships with the communist Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES). Wallis, together with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright (Obama’s former pastor of 20 years) “rallied support for the communist Nicaraguan regime and protested actions by the United States which supported the anti-communist Contra rebels” (Family World News, February 2009, p. 7). Sojourners formed a commune in the Washington, D.C., neighborhood of Southern Columbia Heights, where members shared their finances and participated in various activist campaigns that centered on attacking the U.S. foreign policy, denouncing American ‘imperialism,’ and extolling Marxist revolutionary movements in the Third World.

Also, Jim Wallis said, “I don’t know how else to express the quiet emotion that rushed through me when the news reports showed that the United States had finally been defeated in Vietnam” (Ronald H. Nash, “Why The Left Is Not Right,” p. 58). In his own publication Wallis wrote: “Many of today’s [Vietnamese] refugees were inoculated with a taste for a Western lifestyle during the war and are fleeing to support their consumer habit in other lands” (Sojourners, September 1979).

Wallis founded an anti-capitalist magazine called, The Post-American, in which he called for the redistribution of wealth and an economy managed by

While charity and generousity are commanded to believers in Scripture, it is ALWAYS in an INDIVIDUAL sense. NOWHERE in Scripture does it say that charity means “government redistribution”.

It DOES however, say this: Exodus 20:17 “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that [is] thy neighbour’s.”

      @ PastorRob83:

      1. Jim Wallis IS a supporter of communists and communist ideas. To say otherwise means you are either uninformed or a liar.

      2. The passage you quote of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew MAKES MY POINT. Self-sacrifice, Generosity, Charity & Compassion are all named here by Jesus as traits of INDIVIDUALS. Jesus here is basically saying: “YOU Cared enough as an individual to take time out of your schedule and money out of your wallet and food off of your table to care for someone else. That means so much, it’s as if you did it for me personally.”

NOTE that what Jesus is NOT saying is: “you created a government institution which forcibly taxed your society and redistributed the money to assist others.”

WHY did Jesus NOT say that?

      1. Because Jesus didn’t come to save a GOVERNMENT, He came to save INDIVIDUALS.
      2. Because CHARITY by definition, must be willing, from the heart, freely given, NOT forced by a law.
      3. Because believers in Jesus will be rewarded NOT for creating a a social system, but for INDIVUAL actions: Please read Matthew 25:14-30; Luke 19:12-28

      Hey, Pastor Rob (name fits),
When the devil quoted Scripture out of context, Jesus replied with Holy Spirit fire. So here’s for you:

==> “A man of noble birth… called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’… He… returned home. Then he sent for the servants… in order to find out what they had gained with it. The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’ ‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’ The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’ His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’ Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’ His master replied,…’Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’ Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’ ‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’ He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.” (Luke 19:12-26)

      (CONT.)
Q: Why did the master reward one of the faithful servants with ten cities, while the other faithful servant only got five?
A: Because one produced more with what he got than the other one.

Q.: Why didn’ t the master redistribute the wealth of the unfaithful servant between the two faithful servants?
A: Because the master is not a Marxist. He rewards based on merit. The more you produce, the more will be added onto you. END OF STORY.

You Americans who listen to your popular political talk-show entertainers seem to LOVE easy definitions and resort to emotional name calling when you disapprove of someone’s position. Many of you posting here profess Christian faith, yet you do not apparently see the irony in your name calling and over-the-top pronouncements about your President, Pastor Jim Wallis and members of the ‘Occupy’ movement.

I should not be surprised. You are Americans after all and apparently do not really practise the teachings of Jesus who calls for compassion, respect and love even for your ‘enemies’. I do not see any of that here. You should all be ashamed of yourselves, but you will be responsible to God for your views, judgmental attitudes towards others and your self-righteousness.

I pray that you experience sanctifying grace and seek to live in perfect holiness which means that you would have no room on your hearts for hatred and judgement of anyone.

      1. More than once you use the phrase “you Americans”, so I’ll assume here that you hail from a country where socialism has already crept into every nook and cranny of society – including the church. Here in America, a society was created where the government was intentionally divided and limited so that people would be FREE to live and to worship as their conscience dictated. It was founded on the New Testament concept that ALL believers form a nation of priests and kings (1 Peter 2:9 & Revelation 5:10) and need no dictator, king or State to order our every move. So as you are a non-American, please understand that we are ALL watchmen of our God-given Liberty. (Galatians 5:1)
      2. You posted your accusation under MY post, so I’m assuming you level your comments at me. I note, however, that you do not acknowledge that I posted FACTS and QUOTES regarding Jim Wallis. NOR do you offer any rebuttal, facts or quotes to disprove them.
      3. Specifically, you have accused me of “emotional name-calling” & “over-the-top pronouncements”. YET IN THE VERY SAME POST, you condemn ALL American Christians as people who “do not really practise the teachings of Jesus who calls for compassion, respect and love” & “judgmental attitudes towards others and your self-righteousness.” MAY I POINT OUT that you have done the very thing you came here to accuse others of? Please provide evidence that American Christians are as you describe?

As if I needed to prove that American Christians were ALREADY the most generous people on the planet http://www.amazon.com/Who-Really-Cares-Compasionate-Conservatism/dp/0465008216

May I remind you of the Parable of the Ten Virgins? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_Ten_Virgins

The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

Interesting that Jesus calls many believers “foolish” because (1) they not only did not make sure they could make it on their own, but (2) when faced with a shortage because of their poor planning, they suddenly became Occupy Wall Street protestors, DEMANDING a “redistribution” of wealth. The fools were suddenly transformed into Communists – even though they were believers. They tried to play on the compassion of the other Virgins – whom Jesus calls “wise”. The FOOLS were rejected – not only by the other Virgins, but by the Bridegroom Himself. Think about it.

Regarding Jim Wallis, I remind you that Paul says “God will judge those outside the Church, but believers are to judge what goes on inside the church” 1 Corinthians 5:12-13. Jim has cloaked himself in “compassion”, but underneath he is a communist and one who warps the Scripture by taking our personal obligations and making them Governmen
