‘Obnoxious’: Bill Maher Slams Romney & Limbaugh in NY Times Op-Ed on Free Speech & ‘Co-Existence’

Bill Maher Pens New York Times Op Ed On Free Speech

Comedian Bill Maher is known for a great many things, but encouraging unity and co-existence isn’t generally one of them. Yet in an op-ed published by The New York Times today, this is exactly the message he’s touting.

“We need to learn to coexist, and it’s actually pretty easy to do,” Maher writes. The subject of the piece focuses upon free speech and the outrage that so often comes from the left and the right when pundits, comedians and media figures make controversial statements.

Here are some selections from the article:

When did we get it in our heads that we have the right to never hear anything we don’t like? In the last year, we’ve been shocked and appalled by the unbelievable insensitivity of Nike shoes, the Fighting Sioux, Hank Williams Jr., Cee Lo Green, Ashton Kutcher, Tracy Morgan, Don Imus, Kirk Cameron, Gilbert Gottfried, the Super Bowl halftime show and the ESPN guys who used the wrong cliché for Jeremy Lin after everyone else used all the others. Who can keep up? [...]

The right side of America is mad at President Obama because he hugged the late Derrick Bell, a law professor who believed we live in a racist country, 22 years ago; the left side of America is mad at Rush Limbaugh for seemingly proving him right.

If it weren’t for throwing conniption fits, we wouldn’t get any exercise at all.

Bill Maher Pens New York Times Op Ed On Free SpeechMaher, who has also been criticized for calling former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin the c-word, among other controversial statements, goes on to say that it’s time for “amnesty” for those on the left and the right. He also jokes that this Sunday should be dubbed “National Day of No Outrage” — a supposedly annual day during which no American finds “some tiny thing someone did or said” to lament and rail on about.

Then, on a more serious note, he tells people to simply turn the page or change the channel if they hear something they don’t like. Maher references his own personal example of an individual who he finds annoying, yet is able to “co-exist” with — Limbaugh.

It‘s no coincidence that the comedian invokes the radio host’s name twice in the op-ed, as Limbaugh’s Sandra Fluke comments set off a national firestorm (and also led to some finger-pointing at Maher for his refusal to apologize for past offensive comments).

Bill Maher Pens New York Times Op Ed On Free Speech“For example, I find Rush Limbaugh obnoxious, but I’ve been able to coexist comfortably with him for 20 years by using this simple method: I never listen to his program,” Maher writes. “The only time I hear him is when I’m at a stoplight next to a pickup truck.”

Of course, Maher couldn’t help but insult pickup truck owners, Canada, Limbaugh listeners — and Mitt Romney. He concluded his piece with the following:

“I don’t want to live in a country where no one ever says anything that offends anyone. That’s why we have Canada. That’s not us. If we sand down our rough edges and drain all the color, emotion and spontaneity out of our discourse, we’ll end up with political candidates who never say anything but the safest, blandest, emptiest, most unctuous focus-grouped platitudes and cant. In other words, we’ll get Mitt Romney.”

You can read the entire op-ed here. Stripping away the political quips, what do you think of Maher‘s statements about toning down outrage over public figures’ comments? Take our poll, below:

True – but he also is aware that this could be a “danger” to him should the “left-wing nuts” get away
with shutting Rush down. You know – “what’s good for the goose – is good for the gander”. Freedom
of speech is the discussion that should be going on here.

Years ago I owned a beautiful “tiger-striped” male cat who was so lovable & kind. The neighbor down the street owned an “australian shepherd”. This dog was the sweetest dog & the first time I met this dog he showed his teeth to me….the owner laughed and said the dog was smiling at me. My cat and that dog became best friends. I can still see the two on my front porch on a warm summer day lying next to each other and sleeping so peacefully. Dogs & cats can be friends.
Then one day a wandering-loose dog came into my yard and tore my cat to pieces.

it is no longer possible to have civil discourse with those on the left. there can be no compromise with the left. compromise is a loss. there is only one way to defeat them and that is disallow everything they say and ignore everything they do unless it has a destructive effect on your freedom then you take whatever action necessary to neutralize them.

Bill Maher, you questioned: “When did we get it in our heads that we have the right to never hear anything we don’t like?”

I‘m surprised you don’t know the answer to this, since this very notion comes directly from your darlings in the LIBERAL Socialist circles.

LIBERALS don’t like free speech because they know their agrguments cannot stand up to the truth. They don’t like free speech because preachers tell them they are sinning and need to repent and turn to God. They don’t like free speech because rational financeers tell them they have to stop throwing away money. They don’t like free speech because it threatens the fantasy world that LIBERALS live in.

Thank you very much for you very generous $1mil contribution. I am getting heat for keeping it (you know why). Would you mind writing an op-ed that rationalizes your “comedy” while continguing to cast Limbaugh as a bigot? This will help us put this episode behind us and create a precedent for future gaffes.

Hate to vote “in the middle” because he makes some good points, but (surprise, surprise) his points to lead me to the same conclusion that he comes to.

Here’s the deal: I also don’t want to live in a country where nobody every says anything that anyone every finds offensive, because that is the first indication that nobody is speaking their mind and that voices are being silenced, but I don’t know why Maher feels the need to slam Limbaugh when he should be standing *with* Limbaugh on this topic and should be getting LOUDER.

Now, as to his question: “When did we get it in our heads that we have the right to never hear anything we don’t like?” Bill, it’s called Political Correctness. It was instituted by Stalin & Lenin to silence the speech of anyone who opposed them, and then brought to America and embraced by their Useful Idiots here. In short: it’s *your* fault (collectively) for us being here. Or, as Limbaugh put it waaaaaay back in the early ‘90’s, “Political correctness is a liberal agenda to silence free speech.”

Of course, there’s nothing liberal about the agenda. It’s a Progressive Statist agenda, if anything. To include the word liberalism would seem to indicate an advocation of the expansion of liberties, which is everything but what the Left wants to do with Conservatives’ speech.

The very SAME liberal pundits who claim they should be able to say ANYTHING they want, are the same people who gave us the HATE SPEECH bill. HYPOCRITICAL, DON’T YOU THINK?

But, actually, I think in the first class and that people should be able to say what they want EXCEPT ‘Fire’ in a crowded room. When it become EVIL SPEECH, then IT IS JUST PLAIN WRONG.

THERE DOESN’T SEEM TO BE ANY CIVILITY ANYMORE. When was the last time you opened the door for an elderly person and saod. UES SIR, NO MA’M, etc.? I do it all the time. I RESPECT MY ELDERS, which we are supposed to do. No using the ‘C’ word or the ‘S’ word. IF THOSE ARE IN YOUR VOCABULARY, then they become EVIL. Anyone who begins swearing around me, I usually look at them at say, “YOU JUST SHOWED YOUR TRUE CHARACTER.” I WALK AWAY, NEVER TO deal with them again – ever, UNTIL THEY APOLOGIZE.

When we begin STANDING UP AGAINST this kind of language; when we begin discarding our so-called friends when they are vulgar; when we start punishing our children for being uncivil and not gracious THEN WE WILL CREATE A WHOLE NEW KINDER AND GENTLER GENERATION of CIVIL AMERICANS.

CIVILITY. Do you speak and show civility? Or, when you are out and about, do you yell at someone because YOU THINK THEY ARE STUPID (as if they could never make a mistake in front of YOU).

Pass civility and kindest on. People will see who you really are when you get angry or disagree.

I should’ve proofed that comment… meant to say that I see his reasoning but leads me to a different connclusion.

I voted in the middle mostly because it’s the third option. Badly positioned as The Blaze supplied answer may be, partial agreement and partial disagreement is in the middle.

That’s where I was with Maher… agreement with premise of the argument but not with conclusions he drew out of them.

I can see right through Maher’s schtick on this one. He entirely agrees with Limbaugh but can’t bring himself to admit it, so he’s taking shots at him while making the same argument.

Talk about intellectual dishonesty, I think this just about approaches the very definition.

You know if Mahr really had any balls at all he’d walk a mile or two in the oppositions shoes to “experience” what it’s like to be in the crosshairs of the leftist machine. I bet he’d realize rather quickly who is trying to stifle who. What Mahr fails to grasp is this…the conservatives which he rails against are the ones he has little to fear from for the simple reason that no conservative I know would want to enshrine a law which restricted free speech (no matter what that speech and it’s contenets may contain). The one‘s he should be afraid of are the very people he’s supporting (both on air and privately). This poll like most leftist polls are carefully constructed in order to present an appearance of tolernace but underneath it all they are used to support intolerance in the end politically. Manufacture an issue then start a crusade to head it off at the pass, a classic progressive/leftist tactic.

Bill Maher is finally getting the message that the rules that seem to only apply to the left are finally coming back to bite them on the @s@. He’s finding that he can no longer hide out in his little cacoon of vulgarity and not suffer the consequences of HIS free speech filth. This was all about protecting HIS ability to spew racist, hate speech and not be called out for it. Hate speech, racist speech is what he IS. Without it, he has no following. Modern technology and instant news has finally caught up with the left and they can no longer hide out in the fox holes. This hack piece is nothing about free speech for all. NO. This rant is simply a hit piece on the right; Limbaugh, Romney, and CONSERVATIVE FREE SPEECH. He uses this rant to PROP UP OBAMA FOR THE COMING ELECTION and to try and strauch the fallout from the mentoring and tutoring from the Chicago Communist party that has recently come to light. His not-so-hidden agenda is a ruse, neatly tied up in a “Can’t we all get along” left wing package.

Being a fellow West “ByGod” Virginian, I agree with you 100%. You are right, he is backing Obama for the election, and he is doing every thing that he can to discredit the right. His intelligence leaves a lot to be desired. Being a comedian, politician or an idiot, as he is, does not give him the right to use degrading names against anyone. He doesn’t have the equipment to call them these names to their face because he will then have nothing to hide behind. He also knows that he will probably get smacked in the mouth. He knows he can do this stuff because no one is going to do anything about it. People on the left have been allowed a wide circle of freedom when it comes to dissing the right. Just look at what they were trying to do to Rush. I don’t watch Mahar and any of those left sided stations, like the view because they all are sucking up so outwardly toward the left. The major news stations are doing the same. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Farakan are nothing but con men who are making a living off of racism. I don’t listen to Rush for no apparent reason, mostly because of time. I listen to what the politicians say so that I can make up my own mind who I am going to vote for. I believe this administration is one of the worse that we have had and the members of congress leave a lot to be desired. Pelosi, Reid and several others seems to not care about the people or the country. They want to be on top, they want to win, they like the money and power. OMG

Hey dumbass, it’s the left that is always outraged, selectively, I might add, we’re just fighting back for once!!! Their media monopoly is GONE, and they don’t like it one bit…..screw you Maher

I’m not so sure, Hoss. I’ve been looking at the media here and there over the past month or so, and I’m not sure the media monopoly is gone. There’s a different spin with Fox and some of the conservative radio talking heads from the rest, but it all leads us to the same place. Much like our two party political system. It all bombards us with irrelevant news while real news is swept under the rug I think we’re being played as fools by the entire globalist media.

Nothing like having Foul Mouth Bill giving us a lecture on civility. Just another example of the hypocrisy of the Far Left . These guys are just 99% baloney which they “ sell” as wisdom. Ridiculous.

I can‘t stand this guy but tell me it’s not getting old with the hyper sensitivity in our country. I don’t think anyone realy is offended by most remarks, they are just provided an opprotunity to grandstand.

If both sides were held to the same standard then fine .. but it is the LEFT who is both VILE and then offended when anyone else says ANYTHING. Until the double standard is dealt with … you can’t “co-exist”.

I just watch what I say so as not to provide an out for the wek minded. I leave no wiggle room and stick to straight facts.
