‘Occupy Faith’: Leftist Pastors Offer Protesters Shelter & Support During the Cold Winter Months

Christian Pastors Offer Occupy Protesters Shelter & Food | Rev. Michael Ellick

Some Christian churches will be offering more than prayer this winter, as they plan to devote resources, space and food to Occupy protesters who seek to continue their “march” against the current capitalist system.

As cities continue to crack down on the protesters — Los Angeles and Philadelphia being two of the latest to do so — some faith leaders are more than eager to step up and help. A few pastors and churches are even taking their devotion to bizarre levels, as they seek to find complete and utter solidarity with the Occupiers.

Take, for instance, Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village. Rev. Michael Ellick, a pastor at the church, has been deeply involved in the Occupy movement. He and his colleagues marched to Zuccotti Park when the protests first began. As was widely reported in national media, the group famously carried a golden calf — created to look like the well-known Wall Street bull statue.

Following this well-publicized action, Ellick claims that members of the faith community have been reaching out to Judson to find out how they can get involved. With calls streaming in from people and institutions of all faiths, the reverend finds himself at the center of a support movement.

Since the New York City eviction, which was chaotic and boisterous, Ellick says that the movement has “boomed.“ ”…Immediately there was this network in place that we’d developed of communities throughout New York that were willing to open up their doors and house the movement,” he explains.

Christian Pastors Offer Occupy Protesters Shelter & Food | Rev. Michael Ellick

Rev. Michael Ellick speaks to religious leaders who have come together to pledge their support to the Occupy Wall Street protests (AP)

What was once a few churches lending a helping hand has now become something greater, he explains. “Initially it was just sort of a few churches who work a lot together on these issues. Now it’s actually a pretty hefty power base in New York City.”

Aside from helping meet physical needs, these churches are also holding spiritual services down at Zuccotti Park, as they seek to connect with Occupiers who might be friendly to the gospel. Ellick claims that more than 1,400 faith leaders across America have signed a pledge to support the protesters. Many of these individuals signed on after police cracked down on Zuccotti Park.

Ellick has also taken the lead on a faith coalition in New York City called “Occupy Faith.” On November 20, in an effort to invigorate protesters, Ellick led an interfaith service. His project’s web site claims that Civil Rights activists used the platform to pass “the torch of activism for a better world to the occupiers in a very moving ceremony.”

Watch the service, below:

Ellick‘s most recent message on the Occupy Faith web site talks about the movement’s next steps. It reads, in part:

Hello friends: Much to catch up on following the holiday weekend. Post-eviction from Zuccotti Park, the game has certainly changed form considerably here in NYC, but it seems clear that this has only grown the movement, and much is underway here in NYC. Let’s meet in person this Thursday (12/1) at 10:00a (at Judson) to compare notes and bring each other up to speed.

In particular, we are looking to hold a coordinated weekend of reflection on OWS and the underlying economic justice issues it represents on the weekend of Friday (12/16) – Sunday (12/18). In addition to continuing to educate our faith communities on these issues, our hope is to invite press to various communities around the city to show the true diversity and breadth of this movement here in NYC.

Although the media storm has cooled a bit, this letter shows that some in the faith community have no intention of abandoning the Occupy Wall Street mantra. And Ellick and his church aren’t alone.

In Washington D.C., Christian activists have launched “Occupy Church,” which holds Saturday afternoon prayer services and is seeking to establish a full-time chaplaincy for the protesters. Another D.C. group called “Occupy Faith DC” is helping protesters prepare for a possible eviction by creating a list of faith-based groups and individuals who may help if and when an eviction occurs.

It seems Jim Wallis isn’t the only leftist faith leader helping sustain the Occupiers.

These brainless pastors are giving up valuable donations and alms – which should be going to the truly needy – to a bunch of spoiled, rotten parasites with an axe to grind. These Occupy people aren’t homeless…but they are lost…in one way or another..remember…the bible talks about taking in strangers.. Don’t you remember when the left started some political campaign to shore up leftist pastors for a political agenda?? These would be called “false prophets.“ And because of their ”kindness” to them..they will gain “suppporters” for life.. everyone needs acceptance and love..These people are drawn to the power of a movement..Some don’t even know what they are doing there..I researched why the Jews lean liberally and this is what I found..After “Auswhich” the liberals were just kinder to them than the Conservatives…I certainly see how this came about..I never noticed before how many Conservatives don’t have much kindness in them and seem to only think of themselves..not all mind you..but more than I care to admit…and they are just downright hateful and it’s all about me me me.

ASHESTOASHES . . . Unlike Christian faiths that believe that doing good deeds will store up some after life benefits or ‘grace’, Judaism teaches us that the opportunity to do good is a priceless gift of God. As far as conservative being all about me, me, me, I live in one of the most conservative states in the Country. We have unemployment, homelessness, and lots of other social ills. But I can also tell you that any person here who lives on the street or goes hungry has no reason to do so. The churches and lots of other non-governmental organizations provide meals, shelter and job training and assistance to anyone in need. Very few, if any, tax dollars are expended in the effort.

The really neat thing about conservative states and cities is that people are willing to give anyone a hand up, but balk at the handouts demanded by many in the more liberal places. Conservatives tend to be self reliant and mind their own business, and we all get along just fine, whether gay, straight, Black, White, Asian, Latino, or something in between. I personally think that those students and others in the OWS movement have some valid points, but their message seems to be do something for me, and not some coherent message for change.

@TOMMYGUNS Hi Tommy…Pleasure to meet you…That is an awesome story. I first heard about the kindness of the Jews from Wallid Shoebat..an ex PLO terrorrist whose mother was a Christian and who married a Christian girl. He read her Bible in deperation to debate her and turn her toward Islam..in doing so..he realized they’d been lied to..and was converted by the Holy Spirit..He said he was ashamed..and that the Jews had done nothing but show them kindness. I am also in awe of kindness I see from them on this website. I know that they have always been in obedience to YAWH. Some of the protesters are just like us..and that is why they are protesting..some want the rich to share..Peter Schiff handled that quite nicely..as for me..I want fairness in all sectors and want to take care of the homeless, the disabled and the elderly..We as a country spend money on other lands , mosques and other peoples., when the problems exist at home.. I would like to know in what way these protests are affecting you Tommy.. In the meantime..I want to share something with you please click listen on ZECH 12, ..it’s very interesting.

The late Francis Schaeffer said in A Christian Manifesto that liberal theology is nothing more than secular humanism in religious terms. The liberal theologian will always side with the secular humanist no matter what the issue: whether abortion, same-sex “marriage”, clergy openly behaving homosexually, social welfare, embryonic stem cell research, government coercion in wealth redistribution, protesting wars, environmentalism, opposition to the death penalty, obesity campaign, illegal immigration, and now Occupy Wall Street, the liberal theologian, who is no Christian at all, will always side with the secular humanist.

The Dark Ages, I thought, was mostly due to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. It simply became too dangerous to be in charge of the Roman Empire, even after cutting it in half. They spent their way into obnlivion, even though the state owned much of the means of production. The Romans also debased their currency by lowering the silver content of coins. The French Revolution pretended to embrace reason, but seemed to embrace emotionalism. They too spent their way into oblivion by keeping secret books. The public debt and the private debt of the king were on separate ledgers. They acted as though the King’s debt did not matter. The War between France and England was won because England had superior credit that overcame France’s superior natural and people resources. Stalin’s redistribution of food cause starvation, but it was mostly out of sight of foreign journalists. Hitler did remarkable things with the economy but could never live inside its own boundries and ended up stealing resources , including lives of others until his final destruction. His spending on eliminating the Jews paid no actual return on investment except emotionally.(Sort of like Global Warming Spending) I think Mao finally caught a clue after a lot of people died. OWS will probably have to see the same thing happen before they get a clue. I think ignorance of economics can kill you and your government.

You missed one there – Islam. Right now, Islam is going through its dark ages. It’s the same age that christianity was when it, too, was coopted and used to brutalize and control the masses.

Religion is a construct. Regardless of your belief in a creator, you must understand that the tenets of religion apply to you because you allow them to. To accept anything on faith is to reject the reason that you were endowed with at birth. Reason is what makes us human.

GOD gave two tax rates. 1/5 and 1/10.
Joseph was given a 1/5 tax rate that was low enough for the warehouses to be filled and the Egyptians ran out of numbers. It was so high that even the rich sold themselves into slaver because they couldn’t prepare for the famine. It was a tax cut because when everyone except the priests were slaves they celebrated when the tax was only 1/5. AND EVERYONE PAID THE SAME TAX RATE. Genesis 41 and 47.
The second tax rate of a 1/10 is a burden because Samuel warned that it was high enough for people to cry out to the LORD. 1 Samuel 8..
Paying their fair share in GOD’s eyes is paying the SAME TAX RATE. So this guy is going to hell.

” i don’t know who to trust” christianity is not about trust in a church, but trust in God that was he has revealed and how he guides His church is what will keep us safe, Christianity is not a club, it is suppose to challenge and change you, you should not be completely comfortable with your faith life, if you are then you are not doing nearly enough to challenge it, to make it grow- as for the sex scandal in the Catholic Church, that is a logical fallacy of “poisoning the well” the character of an entity does not reflect the truth it holds are the argument it presents- so look at the dogma‘s it holds now in relation to the original apostle’s earliest church-

As a NYC resident and someone involved in the Christian community here I can tell you that the kind of churches that are involved in this are 1) marginally Christian, if at all 2) willing to do anything to get anyone involved in their very sparsely attended churches. On the other hand, there are a great number of thriving Christian congregations here. They care about the truth of the Gospel and are heavily involved in helping those truely in need instead of those pretending to represent them.

What happened to helping the widow and the orphan? What happened to reaching the truly down trodden? Jesus did not call the church to support a political agenda, He called her to give aid and comfort to those less fortunate. The occupiers need to go back home, work with the system to improve the system. Live out the life they claim to want. And these “faith leaders” need to live out the gospel to ALL, not just those with a political agenda who can get them in the news.

(And before anyone asks, NO Jesus was not the first occupier, He drove out the occupiers (from the Temple), He told them they were defiling His father’s house which is a house of prayer. The occupiers were not His disciples either, the occupiers were the Romans!)

Its members are either too lazy or too dumb to look past the slogans and tri-corner hats and see what the leadership wants. You have been to taken in with slogans that you vote against your own interests. Of course what happened in Ohio with the repeal of the anti-labor laws is evidence that some are waking up. To many here have abandoned the Golden Rule and instead followed Beck and his mistress Ayn Rand to worship Gold.

Catholic Churches in the US have always aligned themselves with the workers and labor, they stood with the poor, not cast them out. You repeat Beck’s lies about OWS, failing to see that those in the streets are the true faces of America, the America that W. and the GOP have abandonded. Those that are unemployed or underemployed, those that have seen the fat cats on wall street give out bonuses while they destroy more American jobs. They are the management of AA that blames the union workers for the bankruptcy, even after the years of union concessions, while Management gave themselves larger and larger year end bonuses.

BGray speaks the truth. I am a Catholic also. My church does not teach vandalism, drug use, rape, assault, seizing public and private property, rioting. Yes, the Catholic Church does have a history of being tied to “blue collar” workers. That is because Catholic immigrants tended to be in the laboring class. In urban areas this may still be true. I live in Nebraska which has a large Catholic population. We come from all walks of life and most of us tend to be conservative. I don’t know anyone in my parish who believes the occupiers are engaged in doing good. When the mob vandalized St Paul’s Episcopalian Church, it became a topic of discussion at the Knights of Columbus. We considered it be desecration.

Do we have a separation of church and state or not.

Solution if you attend a church or any other such tax exempt place of worship and the religious leader or any other mystic says one thing outside the gospel, no more tax exempt status, for 5 years. Let the flock support them. That will keep the churches verging from the biblical framework; politics has no place at the pulpit.

Have we not had enough of so called places of worship used against the remainder of society; put an end to it now.

What happened to freedom of Religion? Church, Clergymen, and Members have all the right as anyone else to discuss topics of politics in Church. The framers sole purpose of Separation of Church and State was to allow everyone to practice whatever religion they wanted and to prevent state mandated faith or religion. In what way does political discussion or endorsement originating from a particular Faith or Church violate anyone’s rights. We are all free to choose what church we attend and if we don’t like their political philosophy we are free to seek faith elsewhere.

Personally, I agree with any particular faith reaching out to the lost i.e. (OWS persons) to enlighten and expose them to principles of faith and a belief in God. Any exposure can’t hurt.

Early on in my faith, and now, I was taught to love everyone even my enemy. Pray for peace, grace, and the love of Jesus Christ for all of them. Perhaps there will be salvation for them. God bless everyone and I hope they make the right decisions to turn away from the dark and come into the light, even for Obama as much as I would disagree with him.

No, I believe the separation clause talks about making laws pertaining to religion, or the free practice thereof… meaning, the state can’t tell you what day to worship on, or how to worship. I think that‘s why the ’National Day of Prayer’ came under fire, because the state was actually mandating a day of prayer. Maybe not a mandate, but a designation. I’m pretty sure that the state can uphold a particular religion, I don‘t believe there’s anything in the Constitution against the government favoring one religion over another…. When the Constitution was written, it was common knowledge in that day, what religion… well, let’s not say religion, but what principles were held in high regard, and they were Christian.

These religious prostitutes notwithstanding, you apparently need to read up on the black robe regiment. If not for politics being preached in the pulpit you would still be a subject of the British Crown. The 501c3 noose put around the necks of church leaders by the evil Lyndon Johnson is the reason we have this false belief that pastors have no right to speak about political issues. Churches need to dump their 501c3′s and start telling the truth regardless of who likes it.

The Commie pastors would be more useful and charitable, if they helped the Occupiers find jobs.

Simple….don’t attend their congregations..don’t donate to them. They’ll have a change of heart when the coffers run dry.
