Occupy…North Pole! Pricey Private School‘s ’Christmas’ Play Skewers Big Oil, Corporate Greed

If you assumed the “Occupy” movement finally reached its geographical (and outdoor-temperature) limits, you obviously haven‘t been hanging out with ol’ Saint Nick for the past few months.

Seems Santa got canned. That’s right…Father Christmas fell victim to a hostile takeover by greedy oil financiers who discovered a potential bubblin’ crude nirvana beneath his fabled workshop.

Worse yet, his beloved elves were outsourced…and now Big Brother is assuming the duties of checking Santa’s list…and…

Okay, better to simply lend an ear to the dramatic narration of Barbara Kibler (see video below)—a dance and religion instructor at George School, a tony Quaker boarding/day school about a half hour north of Philadelphia—who came up with the decidedly left-leaning theme for this year’s Holiday Dance Performance:

Initially all was rosy up north, Kibler told the gathered crowd on Friday…

Santa had a wonderful workshop in the North Pole called “Santa & Friends: We Make Toys with Love.” They made toys and sweets for children around the world. It didn’t matter what the race, ethnicity, or religion the child was, the shop was there for all.

Then evil capitalists plowed in (their acronym in the play, in fact, is GREED), giving everyone from Ebeneezer Scrooge to Burgermeister Meisterburger a run for their cold hard cash…

Occupy...North Pole! Pricey Private Schools Christmas Play Skewers Big Oil, Corporate Greed | George School | Quaker

The shop was sitting on a potential oil field…using eminent domain laws, Santa’s workshop was closed. The elves’ work was outsourced, and the elves lost their jobs. A multinational conglomerate took over the shop and the making and distribution of the toys and instituted strict rules for visits. An independent consulting firm was hired to do background checks on children in order to determine who was naughty or nice.

But fortunately for youngsters barely able to catch a wink on Christmas Eveand who would have otherwise found lumps of coal in their carefully hung stockings—the good folks with the Occupy movement caught wind of the greed afoot at the top of the world…

But little did Santa know that far and beyond, a steady drumbeat—yes, a movement—was swelling, and the masses were organizing, and the dispossessed were finding their strength and their voices and their power to declare, “We are one, and we’re not gonna take this anymore!” Occupy North Pole was born.

Occupy...North Pole! Pricey Private Schools Christmas Play Skewers Big Oil, Corporate Greed | George School | Quaker

The performance aimed to “get everyone in the spirit of Christmas,” said Shelly Chipimo, class of 2013—a boarding student from Pretoria, South Africa—by creating “a story centered on a Christmas tradition.”

Of the show’s “current events” focus, Kibler said that “we all need to be politically and socially aware…we have to step up and help each other.”

With students tapping their parents’ bank accounts to the tune of $31,780 to $45, 710 annually to attend the Newtown, Pa., institution, it‘s a bit of a stretch to imagine anyone on stage or in the audience relating on a practical level to what’s motivating the OWS army…but it’s always nice to be aware.

Good point! They are taking retirement funds from efforts of companies that do a lot of good! I am surprised that this school isn’t in Seattle! Seattle is full of these well-to-do “gentry” progressives, who draw in serious dough from the very entities they complain about at their cocktail parties and in the foyer before the opera performance, to just sound “socially aware”.

I’ve read a lot of bitter posts here. That’s sad. Posts from people who want the best education for their children, as we all do, but who cannot afford to send their children to private schools. So you mock this school for their Christmas play. The kids who are performing are getting a much better education than your child is in public school, so to assuage your guilt with mockery. I‘m reminded of Aesop’s fable of the fox and the grapes. Your children can’t attend a private school of this kind, so you say you would never send your kid here (as if you could afford it, which you can’t).

There is an irony when anyone on this website resents the rich. You support the rich as long as you can hold onto the idea that supporting the rich is supporting freedom (not sure what freedom, but whatever) and that the richest will trickle their wealth upon you you, if you are nice, not naughty.

@ JZS You are sorely mistaken. I for one could easily afford to send my son to George School (as a day student)-(actually grew up very close to and am saddened but not really surprised by this news) for high school as well as a private school that runs between $20-25,000 for prek – twelfth grade. Yes all 14 years, because my husband and I waited to have our son until we could afford to have him, do not live above our means, actually much lower, and are not in debt except for our home and my student loan.

My husband and I have made the choice to homeschool however, as we have found that in even private schools that claim to support Christianity, Liberalism is being spewed at the children and we want our son to have conservative values, understand true economics, and understand the real history not only of our nation, but the world.

I am not jealous. I truly believe that too many parents don‘t realize what is going on in their children’s schools. I actually went on a tour of a school where the admissions director and another parent were “teasing” about being a progressive school. I immediately left the tour and went home. I fear for our country and my child’s future. What kids are learning and surely what they aren’t learning is going to come back and bite us in the behind, as we can already see today.

      Wolf and others,
I lean toward the conservative side with most issues, especially in regards to economics. I attend George School, take part in their esteemed IB program, and am extremely active in the community. I, personally, missed the dance show due to a family illness but I want to say this: There are two ways, I believe, to establish a nonpartisan environment; that is, to completely evade all political and potentially controversial topics (inspiring mindless following and worldly ignorance) or to balance views from both “sides” and to teach through debate. In the real world, we future voters will be bombarded with propaganda and political lies from both major parties. And we will have long-ago acquired the crucial ability to see through the ********. Maybe this show was a joke (much like the dance curriculum) or maybe it was some slanted regime but, either way, it is a small slice of the whole GS media pizza pie. We have more than a handfull of openly homosexual students and faculty, yet there was an assembly not many years ago that began with a speaker saying (forgive any slight misquote), “God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Adam.” I don’t even love George School, but for those internet prowlers out there, know that this is not a daily occurance and as a student here, I have learned when to laugh and when to stand up. Laugh, it’s Christmas time. Oh. And I’m Jewish. Live and let live. I’m against OWS. Strongly. But I’m not against individual thought.

Mine has none, but I wonder why so much hate on this forum? You have the right to educate your children how you choose (presumably), but many people don’t. If this were a public school then you could perhaps make the case about indoctrination of the Innocent, but it is not a public school, and the parents of those who attend have selected this school because of its values and ideology. The fact that so many people on this forum want “them” to be stopped suggests that many people on this forum are indeed afraid of a government that allows free speech and independent thinking.

I appreciate the fact that people in this country are permitted to disagree with my political views, but I am growing wary of the hate. All of you need to get out a little more and talk to actual people…in your own neighborhood…and then in the neighborhood you fear most. You may find that the political rhetoric you espouse is not on as solid a foundation as your disdain for alternative viewpoints appears to be.

Liberals aren’t smart enough to realize that the public, those taking the service of the company pay the taxes levied by the government on them. The company isn’t going to lose money, as it pays it’s taxes. They will raise the price of their goods and services to ensure that they make at least the same amount of profits as before and hopefully more. These higher prices make goods and services cost more and often put a burden on low income families who purchase these goods and services. The higher prices also effect the cost of other goods and services. When it comes to oil and gas, the price of everything transported rises. It’s not a difficult concept to understand, but one that appears foreign to liberals.

Why would greedy capitalists want to takeover Santa’s gig? Isn’t the whole premise that he gives away toys to children anti-thetical to a greedy capitalist’s agenda? They don’t need to get into giving away toys in order to drill for oil, and if they are still giving away the toys to the children, even if it is with stricter criteria, aren’t they still GIVING AWAY toys, how is that greedy? And if they are instead selling the toys, if people are willing to buy them, why should anyone else care what goes on between a wlling buyer and a willing seller?

The school caters to red diaper babies, the second wave of 60′s lefties. Interesting that the students disparage the system, considering that annual fees and tuition run $45,710 (the $32k number is for day students) a year, before books.. Assuming attendance for grades 9-12, that comes to a tidy $182,840…, just for 4 years of high school. These kids (or at least their instructor) are poster children for liberal hypocrisy.
    A few choice graduates :
Julian Bond, ‘57, civil rights leader and chairman of the NAACP

Can I ask why having an NAACP leader as a graduate is something we should be ashamed of? Call me liberally indoctrinated, but I think that conservatives and liberals alike should be able to respect the work of a civil rights leader as important as Julian Bond.

Additionally, in response to your and others’ comments about the high tuition here at GS, people fail to notice that unlike the more elite, more conservative private schools, 20% of George School students receive financial aid. We aren’t a concentration of upper class snobs, we’re a Quaker school that is known for its acceptance of all.

RE: GS_KID’s assertion that “20% of George School students receive financial aid”:

This figure is actually inaccurate. 20% of George School students receive financial aid from the school’s endowment/aid budget. MANY more students (probably twice that figure) receive financial aid from external aid programs, their own religious communities, etc. I think the average reader of this article has the wrong idea about what the average George School student looks like.

I attended George School throughout high school. My time there actually made me more conservative, because the study of history and the economy at GS does not center on a liberal perspective, and instead provides information so that students can draw their own subjective conclusions.

Someone above me in the comments thread said that we all use cars which run on gas to get to school. I’d just like to interject that the majority of my teachers at George School live on campus, as do almost half of all students (myself included, when I attended).

And before you condemn Barb Kibler, who is by all accounts an eccentric person, allow me to say that for years she has dedicated her energies to volunteer work. I have volunteered with her in the past, and know her to be good and kind. Her creative freedom as dance teacher afforded her the opportunity to make this show, which I think is somewhat inappropriate. But you don’t know George School, and from the sound of it, you also don’t know the Quaker way. Hatre

Think of it this way, you let you kids tell you what good is, what fun is, what whatever is, but who told them? There is no point in letting this queer (literal intent) society continue, save the children from the Hitler Youth program that is our public schools. The problem is when all the left has left is their snotty angst, society will have forgotten everything important and we will die off not knowing how to build a fire, yeah metropolitan kids, can you build a fire? a pulley? As always, the leftist liberal refused to show or admit that the root cause of all this type of behaviour is big government regulations. When big government takes over the private sector and attempts to rule it with an iron fist, the private sector reacts by moving to where there is less interference with their business. Business 101……… but they don’t teach business tactics anymore to the young mush heads of today. But, even the mush heads will learn sooner or later that at some point you run out of others peoples money and the whole theory implodes on top of them. Ask the people of Spain, Greece, France and all points Europe. Even the people of Russia are starting to come out of their communist induced coma.
