Education Occupy…North Pole! Pricey Private School‘s ’Christmas’ Play Skewers Big Oil, Corporate Greed

If you assumed the “Occupy” movement finally reached its geographical (and outdoor-temperature) limits, you obviously haven‘t been hanging out with ol’ Saint Nick for the past few months.
Seems Santa got canned. That’s right…Father Christmas fell victim to a hostile takeover by greedy oil financiers who discovered a potential bubblin’ crude nirvana beneath his fabled workshop.
Worse yet, his beloved elves were outsourced…and now Big Brother is assuming the duties of checking Santa’s list…and…
Okay, better to simply lend an ear to the dramatic narration of Barbara Kibler (see video below)—a dance and religion instructor at George School, a tony Quaker boarding/day school about a half hour north of Philadelphia—who came up with the decidedly left-leaning theme for this year’s Holiday Dance Performance:
Initially all was rosy up north, Kibler told the gathered crowd on Friday…
Santa had a wonderful workshop in the North Pole called “Santa & Friends: We Make Toys with Love.” They made toys and sweets for children around the world. It didn’t matter what the race, ethnicity, or religion the child was, the shop was there for all.
Then evil capitalists plowed in (their acronym in the play, in fact, is GREED), giving everyone from Ebeneezer Scrooge to Burgermeister Meisterburger a run for their cold hard cash…
The shop was sitting on a potential oil field…using eminent domain laws, Santa’s workshop was closed. The elves’ work was outsourced, and the elves lost their jobs. A multinational conglomerate took over the shop and the making and distribution of the toys and instituted strict rules for visits. An independent consulting firm was hired to do background checks on children in order to determine who was naughty or nice.
But fortunately for youngsters barely able to catch a wink on Christmas Eve—and who would have otherwise found lumps of coal in their carefully hung stockings—the good folks with the Occupy movement caught wind of the greed afoot at the top of the world…
But little did Santa know that far and beyond, a steady drumbeat—yes, a movement—was swelling, and the masses were organizing, and the dispossessed were finding their strength and their voices and their power to declare, “We are one, and we’re not gonna take this anymore!” Occupy North Pole was born.
The performance aimed to “get everyone in the spirit of Christmas,” said Shelly Chipimo, class of 2013—a boarding student from Pretoria, South Africa—by creating “a story centered on a Christmas tradition.”
Of the show’s “current events” focus, Kibler said that “we all need to be politically and socially aware…we have to step up and help each other.”
With students tapping their parents’ bank accounts to the tune of $31,780 to $45, 710 annually to attend the Newtown, Pa., institution, it‘s a bit of a stretch to imagine anyone on stage or in the audience relating on a practical level to what’s motivating the OWS army…but it’s always nice to be aware.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 1:21amI would agree with anyone that this article and video by themselves is concerning. THIS PIECE DOES NOT ACCURATELY ILLUSTRATE THE GS COMMUNITY NOR DOES IT ACCURATELY ILLUSTRATE THE SPECIFIC EVENT. I believe that many of the comments are reasonable on this page. I would suggest that the people that have posted their opinions look at the big picture. Many people in this series of comments have talked about the members of this community as being hypocritical. Last year I partook in a class offered at GS call Theory of Knowledge; in this class, participants were asked to supply support for all statements and claims made in the classroom. Please keep in mind that most of the well crafted posts on this page have been written by teenagers who are not only intellectual individuals but care greatly about their school and community. Posted on December 21, 2011 at 4:43pmHonestly – I have to disagree. I am from the area and familiar with NFS and the Abington Friends School as well as the George School. Tell me, do they still have the “Free Mumia” posters all over?
The quakers have been infiltrated by leftists. I am speaking with experience as I regularly attended one of the local meetings until I got thoroughly disgusted. It’s ironic because the Newtown Friends School was founded by a guy who volunteered to serve in the navy in combat in WWII.
In my previous post I mentioned how, in our visit to abington friends school, we were told that our son‘t artwork could not say ’god bless the troops’. BUT THEY HAD A WALL FULL OF PORTRAITS OF KARL MARX..

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 7:35pmI’m conservative, and Christian, and my daughter goes to George School, where she and many other students receive generous financial aid. It’s a fine school–academically challenging, well ordered, and not snobbish in the least. It functions self-consciously as a Quaker community, emphasizing service and respect for the views (and the religious faith) of students and faculty of a variety of leanings, not just progressive ones. Students are expected to do the hard work of listening to one another, checking facts, analyzing sources for accuracy and bias, and disagreeing in straightforward and respectful ways. They are expected to hold firm to their own values and defend their beliefs persuasively, without ranting and without puffing themselves up by attacking straw men. They’re also expected not to take silliness too seriously. I suspect all of us who are commenting here could benefit from such lessons.
The students viewed the dance as pretty goofy. I doubt that more than two of them took it seriously.

I AM A STUDENT AT GEORGE SCHOOL.
this was not a play. It was a assembly and the dance team put it on. It was 15 minutes long. Our dance director put it on the students had nothing to do with it.
More than half our school is going off on financial aid and are the 99% percent.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 9:32amFor those of you concerned that George School has lost the meaning of Christmas, please be aware that the “Holiday” Meeting for worship included a reading of the nativity…as it always does. This despite the fact that many of the students are NOT Christian. George School, like many Friends schools, operates on a platform of inclusiveness and so there are students from all over the world representing all religious, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Solving the problems our world is facing will require the collective input of everyone who lives in it…having a little fun with the commercialism of Christmas is just a part of the overall discussion not necessarily a representation of the school’s views…or the students who go there.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 9:06amI wonder why so much hate on this forum? Is this what you want to teach your children. You have the right to educate your children how you choose (presumably), but many people don’t. If this were a public school then you could perhaps make the case about indoctrination of the Innocent, but it is not a public school, and the parents of those who attend have selected this school because of its values and ideology. The fact that so many people on this forum want “them” to be stopped suggests that many people on this forum are indeed afraid of a government that allows free speech and independent thinking.
I appreciate the fact that people in this country are permitted to disagree with my political views, but I am growing wary of the hate. All of you need to get out a little more and talk to actual people…in your own neighborhood…and then in the neighborhood you fear most. You may find that the political rhetoric you espouse is not on as solid a foundation as your disdain for alternative viewpoints appears to be. The reality is that neither of the two major political parties represent viewpoints that allow for inclusive substantive dialog. Instead they promote divisiveness and hate that will inevitably lead to war. So unless you hope to be on the “winning” side of a genocide of ideology you should all take a step back and think about what’s really important. Would you really fight a war for your economic beliefs? Is the play at a private Quaker school the tipping p

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 7:44amClearly, The person who wrote this article never did their homework. I speak as one of 7 conservatives to ever walk to the campus of George School and have a little bit more insight into the inner workings of the school.
First of all, only approximately 25% of the students there pay full tuition. I was one of them. It is so high, in fact, to redistribute back to students who need financial aid. So about 75% of these students who are “paying pricey tuition” and have no way of possibly identifying with the occupy movement were likely a part of it. New York is a 2 hour train and you are dealing with an enormous amounts of young activists who are receiving a prep school education almost entirely free.
Saying you would never send your child to George School? I would be lucky if my children had the distinct pleasure of attending that school. Albeit EXTREMELY liberal, no one will genuinely care about your child more than those people- and they are and will be responsible not only for the person I have become but also the things that I do in life.
George School pushes kids to think about themselves, their actions, and how that can impact the greater world. So many people think that they just foster extreme liberals but the truth is that they simply teach their students to be the best that they can be, and constantly push them to greatness.
George School isn’t good enough for your kids? It was good enough for the Cosby’s, Blythe Danner, Molly Dodd Anderson, and me.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 1:52amHi everyone! So I actually went to this school, and I have to tell you, they were some of the best years of my life. I was not, however in the dance program, for fairly obvious reasons. Barb (the dance teacher) is actually a perfectly nice human being, she just has really crazy ideas for dance shows which I could never really get behind.
So no, artistically I was not a fan of Mrs. Kibler. That doesn’t mean she is a “moron,“ or a ”commie b!7#h,” as some of you have claimed (based on a 2-minute-30-second video).
Yes, there is a liberal leaning at the school, but there’s a stronger leaning towards the Quaker values of communal and individual respect. Believe it or not, whenever one of the “dirty commie liberal bastards” (as you call us) would get up and insult a Conservative, things would go far worse for the liberal. He would be “eldered” severely (Which for those of you who don’t know is like a non-violent form of torture reminiscent of a Poe novel). So yes, I’m about as liberal as you can get in the US without being on a bunch of Government watch-lists. I’d love me some European-style Socialism. And yet some of my closest friends at the school were Republicans, and we got along absolutely fine, because the truth is this: The political leaning of the school is less important ultimately than the fact that it genuinely promotes even-headed, rational, and all-inclusive debate, and teaches kids the skills they need to implement it.

Posted on December 19, 2011 at 11:49pmJust so you all are aware, George School is one of the most open and accepting schools in the world. This doesn’t just mean religiously but it also means politically. Because of this, even though this performance had a clear opinion to it, there are also faculty and students who voice their opinions against this subject. So please, don’t act all high and mighty because you feel this school is showing one single opinion which happens to not agree with your own. And something else to add to all of this, 47% of the kids who go to George School receive tuition aid which is more then the majority of schools (including colleges) out there. This means there are many students going to George School on full ride. George School is an amazing place full of varying opinions and people. Please respect the place that it is by not stating horrible opinions about it before you have gone there.

I think that there is a valid criticism somewhere in all she bile these people are spitting on my (our?) school, and we should accept it, but that said, the criticism is more of an aspect we need to possibly tweak, and less of a reason to condemn the school to eternal hellfire.

Posted on December 19, 2011 at 10:42pmPersonally, I am quite critical of the whole OWS business and find it to be a large waste of many people’s time and effort that could otherwise be spent doing much more productive activities. That being said, I am also a very PROUD and recent alumni of George School and find it completely disheartening that so many people are making harsh/completely irrational judgements about such a wonderful, caring, well- educated community of people. Granted the school is quite liberal in many of its philosophies. However the term “communist” and other such disarities are completey ridiculous and uncalled for. This school has less to do with politics and everything to do with teaching kids about love, charity, community, and God’s inner light shining through us. If those of you who critize the school left your ignorant judgemental prejudices aside and actually talked to any one of the students or faculty, you would find that you were talking to some of the most caring, respectful, and politically mindful people on the planet. The video above was a large joke and not meant to portray any sort of extreme leftist tendencies. The fact that some berate the video for such ideology is utterly laughable. I am not particularly fond of the topic that this teacher (someone who I hold in very high regard) chose to use for the dance performance. However, it IS just a silly high school performance. It doesn’t come close to representing the wonderful qualities/staff/students that can be found there

Posted on December 19, 2011 at 9:27amI am ashamed to admit that both I and my wife graduated from George School in the 1970’s. By then it was already left-leaning but nothing like this.
Report Post »The fact of the matter is that Quakerism began to be highjacked by non-Quakers, many of whom were former Unitarian Church members that found that “doctrine” too “confining”. These people found a place to hide themselves and their views in the silence of Quaker meeting for worship until their numbers became large enough to take over. I was raised in part as a Quaker and Quakerism runs through my wife’s family dating back 300 years, but we were both driven from the denomination in the ‘90s when meeting for worship suddenly became a forum for endless geopolitical discussion with only liberal/progressive views expressed and tolerated–something founding Quakers would have opposed in favor of keeping the focus on God.
The fact is that the original Quakers were very entrepreneurial and sought after business partners because of their reputation for honesty—a distinction that this so called Quaker institution now ignores.
What was it Michele Obama said in 2008 “we must change our history and traditions”, well Quakerism is one shining and profoundly tragic example that this effort has been going on successfully for a long time.
Sadly, George School is just one of the accomplices in driving this once honorable religious movement into the feces filled dirt. Others include the Yearly Meeting, Education Council, and
