Occupy Oakland Protesters Try to Retake Campsite, Hurl Paint at Police While Chanting This is Why We Call You Pigs

A crowd of roughly 400 Occupy Oakland protesters clashed with police Tuesday evening while trying to reclaim a campsite that they had been ousted from earlier in the day. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the crowd marched from the public library toward Frank Ogawa Plaza at about 5 p.m., vowing to confront police.

At one point, protesters threw paint at riot police officers’ faces and helmets while chanting, “This is why we call you pigs.”

The crowd grew as protesters marched around several downtown streets, but police kept demonstrators away from the former Occupy Oakland encampment outside City Hall at 14th and Broadway.

There were some violent exchanges, although by 6:40 p.m. most of the protesters were simply marching.

Earlier, when officers in riot gear hemmed in protesters on Washington Street and attempted to arrest one person, about 50 more surrounded them shouting, “Let him go, let him go.”

Protesters threw turquoise and red paint at the riot police officers’ faces and helmets. Some led the crowd in chanting, “This is why we call you pigs.”

According to the Chronicle some demonstrators pleaded with agitators in the group to remain peaceful but they instead chose to fight with police. The provocateurs were subsequently clubbed, kicked and peppered with flash grenades by law enforcement.

The bulk of the arrests were made within a mere five minutes of law enforcement descending on the swarm of occupiers. One of those arrested had allegedly been squatting at the campsite with her 2-year-old daughter.

Some peaceful protesters condemned the provocative actions of other demonstrators:

“They didn’t have to force police into that situation,” said Helen Walker, 46, a nurse from Albany. “It was totally provoked, and if I could have, I would have stopped those idiots from throwing paint.”

At about 6:20 p.m. protesters tried to enter Frank Ogawa Plaza, but were met by a line of police in riot gear who quickly donned gas masks and ordered the crowd to disperse. After activists came face-to-face with police, they sat down in the intersection before moving on and trying to enter the plaza from another side street.

The confrontation came hours after police swept through Occupy Oakland’s 15-day-old encampment outside City Hall and a second, smaller camp nearby, arresting 85 people who were protesting as part of a nationwide movement against economic inequality and corporate greed.

City officials said they were forced to clear the encampments due to sanitary and public safety concerns.

According to authorities, police fired two or three nonlethal projectiles from a shotgun at protesters who lobbed bottles, cans and other objects.

“I am very pleased with the way things went,” interim Police Chief Howard Jordan said at a news conference. “In the end, I think we allowed people to exercise their rights to free speech and free assembly.”

      Police need to be careful the drones are looking for any opportunity to use against them. I saw some footage from earlier today, after a drone threw something at the cops they grabbed him.There was a boatload of people ready with cameras and I cannot verify it but sounded like they were screaming “police brutality”.

      Its doesnt matter if cops do it or not, the radicals need only put the idea in peoples mind and it spreads like wildfire. Soon the other groups will hear about it and escalate things. Remember as I and others have warned they (all of them from drones up to & including Pharaoh Obama) want violence in the streets. You think that EAS test on the 9th is for the heck of it?! Look at the bigger picture folks this is all by design.

      I propose a radical idea and I know no one will go for it. Box them in, surround & isolate them and let them destroy property, carry on and bring chaos only within their own ranks let NO ONE including LE engage them. Maintaing a “protective” perimeter around them of LE and cameras will do more damage to their cause and their handlers than we could possibly imagine. For anyone to counter protest or police to engage them is only enabling them. If we show the world they are the true bad guys they will get nothing, zero support. Obama wants the streets on fire so he can come in, potentially seizing power to restore order looking like a savior just in time for the election.As crazy as it sounds its possible!       When you provoke a response, you deserve what you get. When you resist the police, they are authorized to overcome your resistance with greater force. Since all these idiots want if press coverage, they know very well how to get it, by provoking it. Send them to the hospital … enroute jail of course. Then, when these anarchists attempt to sue, throw their cases out on their face since the alleged victims don’t recognise the authority of the government.

      Thought the sign was pretty humorous..”Occuposer goes goes home and showers every day, and runs when the cops come.” ha ha…they probably run home and shower or take a break to do drugs elsewhere when the cops come. Do you remember just a few weeks ago when that union guy was standing before the crowds telling them that they had to create crisises everywhere? To occupy everything? And not to be afraid of going home…uh ..I mean to jail? Said that would be what it took. Do you guys remember what that speaker’s name was? Going to jail is just a part of their job description.

      @ROTHBARDIAN I believe that the only ones who the police are carting off are the law breakers. The union guy told them to occupy private property..vacant homes . anything they can and be prepared to go to jail.. The Tea Party does nothing illegal. I am not for carting these guys to jail..we really should be inviting them in and talking with them, well not all of them because some of them look a little scary..but they are being paid to be unruly. Usuallly you have a more captive audience when they are in jail..but this could be a perfect opportunity to reach out to these people and let them know that they are being paid /used to take away their own freedoms…Of course..since they are getting paid…they may not care..because most can’t see beyound “right now.”

      Look! I have to pay to use the State Parks in California so I can pitch my tent or pay the $5 a day user fee to hike the lands my forefathers left for us and fought to keep them free for us. These people think they can just pitch a tent anywhere like their on the prairie somewhere is ridiculous. You cannot camp in city proper, its not intended for that use. Even our State parks have latrines and running water, most city parks do not.

    Most Americans are hurting due to this economy. We cannot undo what has been done, all we can do is work together and try to fix this. I don’t sympathize with the protesters, most are being used like pawns in a chess game. Mr. Obama is a community organizer as well as most of his friends, that’s how he was elected. AD Busters, George Soros, Numerous Web-Sites (Move-On, Code Pink) and their Representatives, Elected Officials with a Socialist flair, Union Organizers, Marxist Groups, Anarchists all had a hand in achieving the protests. Now you have Hollywood, CAIR, and Iran joining in to show their support. Why? Because States and Cities that damaged themselves cannot afford to pay their bills, their broke, Why? Because their citizens are dependent upon them for their income, and the Cities and Unions chased all the jobs right out of town due to greed. Now they have control of your Federal Government and they want more, they want to change your Republic into a Socialist System, one that redistributes the wealth by stealing. The Billionaires backing the movement have already placed their bets through the derivative market and are waiting for your country to fail so they can collect and completely remove your Liberties, is this what you want?       I live here in the Bay Area, North Bay actually and I have been following this all day. This AM there were maybe a 100 protestors removed from the Occupy slum park. By this after noon it looked like a 1000 people tearing up and down the streets. The thugs in Oakland love this stuff, anything to get em out in the street to cry the “Poor me card” or create what appears to police violence against the blacks. Many of those on the streets were not actual Occupiers. On one hand I am glad to see that California has bigger balls than NY, where all of this crap originated. However, Oakland is the city that this kind of crap happens all the time. (Bart shooting looting etc).

      You make an excellent point here. They are the product of the progressive movement. This is the one time, cant believe Im saying this, I encourage them to take a local govt office over! I guess I can get away with saying that because its San Fran. Its so embedded with the liberal disease that the rulers of it deserve a taste of what they have created. I think there should be a push by the residents for her highness Nanzi Pelozei to come down and talk to them. Have her talk them down and ask them to leave peacefully. Lets see what happens! Im sure when some violent outbreaks still occur she will find a way like the Pharaoh to blame the TEA party and the right!

    I lived through the 60s and all that Hippie mess protesting everything in sight, fighting with the police, trashing the places where they squatted–and I can testify that the behavior, hygeine and IQ of the protestors has not improved ONE IOTA since then! If anything, they seemed to have gone the other way and are even DUMBER than their 60s heroes. You would think they would have evolved a LITTLE in all that time, wouldn’t you?

      @ISHK — The meida are in league with the protesters of OWS and the other Occupy groups; like most of the administration and Van Jones and the other Progressive Radicals, they want to raise the chaos, raise the pressure, and make it appear the events are spinning more and more out of control while making it appear that the protesters are the victims from burtal police members.

      These demonstrations are nothing more than a means to achieving a ending; the end of the Republic and the engagement of a Socialist Progressive Regime…they need chaos, have the bottom riot up and when people scream out for the nightmare to end, the top slams down and its end game.

      Really easy to understand–Tea Party members got permits to meet in an area, held to the times on the permits (usually a few hours), welcomed anyone who wanted to participate who WERE NOT causing trouble or dissent, and clean up completely after themselves.

      “Occupation protesters” are camping out, soiling fowling an area, no self-rule, no self-policing, and refusing to listen to authorities.

      Tea partiers abide by laws in place while working to change the laws they seek to change. “OWS” (or whereever!), do what ever they want and are not clear on what exactly how and what they want to change.

      Easy to understand!

      Also, as tools of the laws suspension and the consequence, the protester tools are usually the first to be, as Yuri Bezmenov put it, “squashed”, because they are “troublemakers”.

      There’s nothing stopping communists and socialists from starting their own communes, towns, villages or whatever within the borders of the United States. They could buy tracts of land and own them in common and share any revenue or income the land produced or that any of their labor produced. There’s nothing to stop them. There’s such a commune near where I live that has been in operation since the 1960s.

      New Harmony, Indiana. Rugby, Tennessee. It’s been done before. They usually fail, and the OWS crowds have devolved into their own little Terrors in their efforts to self govern. But, hey, when they can expand to a national scale, it’ll work perfectly.
