Hundreds of Occupy Portland protesters engaged in a standoff with police Saturday night into Sunday morning, defying an eviction order and refusing to leave the Oregon park area where they had gathered.

City officials had set a midnight Saturday deadline to disperse, but the face off continued into the early Sunday morning hours.

By mid-morning, the streets had cleared and protesters returned to their camp, with dozens arrested. Portland Mayor Sam Adams vowed the protesters would be forced out, but said the process it would take several days to complete.

The number of Occupy Portland protesters and their supporters swelled to thousands at one point, but thinned to several hundred by the end, according to the Oregonian.

The Portland Tribune reported one police officer was injured around 1:45 a.m. Sunday when what looked like a large firecracker was thrown from the crowd toward police. Officers said other Occupy protesters pointed out the man who threw it so he could be taken into custody.

At 5 a.m., Police Lt. Robert King described the situation as a “static position,” but said he was concerned about escalation as daylight approached and demonstrators showed no signs of leaving.

“We are concerned this is moving toward a confrontation with police,” King said.

Organizers said their goal was for enough people will join them to make it difficult if not impossible for police to carry through on any eviction.

“Occupy the street,” one organizer said through a bull horn. “Remain peaceful and aware. We have strength in holding the streets.”

Adams had ordered the camp shut down, citing unhealthy conditions and the encampment’s attraction of drug users and thieves.

Police numbers shifted throughout the night, and around 4 a.m. a line of about 200 police stretched across a street and in front of a federal courthouse.

Protesters facing them appeared to be in a festive spirits with some banging on plastic pails, another clanging a cowbell while others danced in the streets as a man juggled nearby.

Police prepared for a possible clash, warning earlier that dozens of anarchists may be planning a confrontation with authorities. Officers seized pieces of cement blocks Friday, saying they were told some demonstrators had plans to use them as weapons against police. They said they believe some demonstrators are building shields and trying to collect gas masks.

“We‘ll take action that’s appropriate, when it’s appropriate,” King told The Associated Press.

It appeared earlier that about 200 campers planned to get arrested. But police action seemed less likely after the crowds swelled the parks in the early morning hours.

In the hours leading up to midnight, protesters held general assembly meetings where they talked about what to do when the deadline came. The also repeated the main message of Occupy Wall Street movement of peaceful resistance to income inequality and what they see as corporate greed.

As those speeches were going on, some snacked on coffee and burritos as others sang protest song. About 60 bicycle riders circled the camp repeatedly to show support.

“We are a peaceful resistance,” said rider Chico Tallman, a 63-year-old accountant. “But we’re fed up with the direction the country is going. It’s all about profit.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

It is no different than the question of “How do you fight an enemy that is willing to die for their cause? You accommodate them.” So we need not ask how to handle a group of misfits that are willing to go to jail for their cause.

      Exactly the right solution.

Jail them. Use the FEMA camps the progressives have been building for so long. Reeducate them. Have Michael Moore give them economy lessons (how to be a member of the 1% but sell yourself as the 99%).

These are lawbreakers, plain and simple. They are intentionally obstructing traffic, forcing business to close, crashing private conferences in DC and Denver, committing felonious assault all over, violating private property rights elsewhere; they need to be arrested.

Elected officials and sworn police officers are abdicating their responsibility, their DUTY, to contain, arrest, and prosecute these criminals.

This is Barack insane Obama’s party. It’s his (and Trumka’s union) army. It’s the 1918 communist revolution – delayed – and it’s coming to a neighborhood near you.

      Bring it.

Ricco act should be applied. It is a conspiracy from city to city. They are organized and have leaders. Ricco act used against abortion protesters and criminal groups. We have learned that free speech doesn’t allow school kids to wear an American flag, why should it be allowed for sedition and destruction?

@NORMBAL… who holds the keys to those “FEMA Camps?” You said it, “This is Barack insane Obama’s party. It’s his (and Trumka’s union) army.” The Occupier-in-Chief” holds those keys. WE are their planned tenants. I fear that by this time next year, there will be martial law and a civil war under way and to squelch OUR rebellion, the Chief Occupier will call in the blue-hats: troops from Pakistan, Iran, and Saudi Arabia who would LOVE to put down an infidel force. Let’s not forget the millions already pre-stationed in cities around this country waiting for orders to march and detonate their kids in the name of @llah.

This is the result of teaching young childern the doctine of stoic-sophism in any of its representative theocracies (Socialism, communism, progressivism, Darwinim, Objectivism, or Liberation Theology). The children no longer can think logically or independently, they turn instead to the group think which has been instilled in them and rally for a state countrolled solution. I have yet to hear a singlie idea from the mouths of these babes which is not founded in Marx & Engels dialectic of materialism. As a matter of fact the entire movement is founded on Marx and Engels dialectic. its all about income re-distrubion, the hall mark of Marx and Engels dialectic of materialism.

But what can one expect from Portland Oregon, they are the founders of soviet style subversion in the United States. Stoic-Sophism became the major religion there back in the late 1950s. There is hardly a place you can visit or a person you can talk to that is not bound down in Marx & Engels Stoic-Sophist based doctrine. Go look for yourself

I probably shouldn’t jump in here but here goes…

@YOUNGBLOODNEWS it is borne of frustration and I am not going to chide you on your choice of words, in fact I have spat more than a few choice words myself, it’s better to release it harmlessly than to get physically angry, (OWS)

@AMAZINGGRACE8 I feel your frustration also, however, as a “Shadow Boomer” I followed your generation, and though many good things came from them they were also a part of the original 60′s movement that did this very same thing. The “Boomers” were a far cry from innocent, in fact many of them are now behind this second wave of recreating their failed social attacks on America. In fact, if I remember correctly, that was the generatin that gave us that wonderful Jane Fonda who made a trip to Vietnam and turned on our troops who were being held in prisons. Also the generation that spat on our troops as they returned from a war that our govt sent them to, then deserted them. If I am wrong, please correct me.

I’m sure that YOUNGBLOODNEWS feels as though he is being painted with a broad brush belonging to this generation, and that is of course frustrating, isn’t it? I could much more easily overlook some cuss words than overlook the property and personal destruction that is happening right now, that we should be much more worried about. Not trying to pick a fight, just sayin’…..

My bottom line point here is that the majority of us are united on the fact that these protests are misguided (at least), and if we start picking on each other over trivial things we are going to just drive wedges. Truthfully I could care less what generation any of us comes from, all that matters to me is that we are united in one main thought and we don’t break our momentum with each other. Don’t become small factions that have to fingerpoint back and forth. I hope this makes my earlier post a little clearer, it was not meant to “pick” but to make a point that we a have to come somewhere or sometime, but what is imortant is that we all are here now. Hope that makes sense.

It’s all because there are no politicians with any backbone anywhere in the system. They are afraid of the minority opinion instead of just doing what they were elected to do.

What our OUR RIGHTS? At what point do they begin to protect the rights of those of us living within the LAW?

When you infringe on the rights of others you forfeit your own rights. They HAVE NO RIGHT TO PROTEST when they reach that point.

When you block me from walking or driving on a public street you are no longer a protested you are a criminal and should be treated as such.

Enforce the law, clear ‘em out and arrest them. If they get violent, use proper procedures (tear gas, rubber bullets….whatever).

All those arrested should be thrown in a cell. Process them all one at a time…finger printing, mug shots etc etc. Depending on how many protesters you have…they could spend days in those cells.

Look at the faces of the protesters in the pictures. I’m betting most of them are the 99%….the 99% who have no idea why they’re there, who have no idea what the supposed “issues” are, who think it’s a “great party”, etc. I’d like to see them all lined up and asked those simple questions. When the cops are outnumbered 50:1 notice how restrained they are. Unlike when they outnumber some hapless creep and go completely beserk beating them and shooting them to a pulp. Just a thought. Oh by the way, cops in Hazelwood, Missouri are now wearing military boots with their pants choked up instead of shoes. Like they are military commandos or something. — Very, very, very few instances of that happen. And if a cop does participate in such reprehensible behavior, I’m all for holding them accountable, punishment and termination. Not diminishing the seriousness of that behavior but there’s always a few bad members in any group

cops in Hazelwood, Missouri are now wearing military boots with their pants choked up
      — maybe new to Hazelwood, but I’ve seen the same in many places – big & small. Cops I know personally tell me it’s a safety measure. They’ve learned from swat teams that pants choked up don’t get caught on things and it’s difficult to chase someone if your footwear can slip off easily. Trust me; these aren’t guys that will turn on the general public. They would throw down their badge, tell the higher ups to stuff it and walk away. It isn’t necessarily a threatening commando thing

Bottom line is the longer they are allowed to continue more idiots will join the party. The situation will become more volatile and will erupt into a bigger problem than the police are facing now

The OWS protesters are showing us all just how great it is to be filthy , stupid, misguided, lazy, free loading, drugged up , thieves, ignorant, criminal , insane, and complete useful idiots. Think I’ll past and stick to just working, paying taxes, abiding our laws, and trying to teach my kids some values, love of country and just plain common sense. These protests show one only needs a loud group of fools to start a big nigh mare! I feel sympathy for the police who have to see, listen too, and smell these pathetic twits.

Have you ever noticed that when asked, “what is your goal here?” they always reply that the goal is more occupiers? So their goal of the protest is to get more protesters? That’s incredibly illogical nonsense! It‘s like saying I’m going to drive to the gas station so I can get more gas to drive. It’s either that crap or, “end corporate greed!” which is just as stupid and illogical.

Commendations to the police officers for showing restraint. The Obama backed action is just waiting for violence to invoke Martial law.

Two S.F. police officers cut with razors………

These occupiers will eventually realize their message will be overpowered by headlines say “head lice and body lice outbreak in Portland #OWS”, “Drug resistant TB found by CDC at #OWS”, “Occupiers rushing for STD testing in NYC”, etc.

With the filth, the unsanitary conditions……. the eventual headline will be: “Cholera and dysentery overtakes #OWS (put name of city here).”

When any full-on outbreak occurs, the Liberal biased media won’t have a choice. It WILL BE the news they can’t ignore or refuse to report.

When cases of drug resistant TB are found in families of the protestors, the biased media won’t have a choice in this either.

Remember, MOST of these protestors GO HOME and then return to the occupy movement. Even IF they stay at local hotels, the housekeeping staff and the hotel workers are EXPOSED to this too.

It IS only a matter of time.

The cops will do whatever they are told. Oathkeepers my butt. They would open up their skulls like bags of potato chips if they were told to do it. They will do whatever they are told to do by the politcians in order to get their pensions. And make no mistake about it. They will go after Tea Party as well if they were told to.

Instead, shoot it above them and make it “rain” down on them…that way it just freezes them out vs. “violently spraying them”
