Occupy Protester Interrupts Congressional Committee: ‘Tax the Rich’ & ‘End the Wars’

Protester Interrupts Super Committee Hearing with Tax the RichA protester trumpeting the Occupy Wall St. message interrupted the Congressional Deficit Super Committee Wednesday to tell lawmakers to “tax the rich” and “end the wars.”

“The American people want to tax the rich and the end the wars,” the protester, a woman, said as she walked toward the committee room floor as committee member Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI) finished his talk. “That’s how we fix the deficit. And all this obfuscation with percentages of GDP, this is just trying to confuse the issue.”

“We would have enough money for housing and health care and everything that we want if we stopped spending our money [on the] military machine,” she added. “It’s very obvious. I speak for the 99 percent: End the wars and tax the rich.”

You can watch it below:

The Capitol Police eventually led the woman away. ABC News reports she is being charged with disruption of Congress. However, she wasn’t the only one who voiced displeasure. Code Pink also got involved during the public hearing:

As members of the committee took their seats around the dais and co-chair Sen. Patty Murray prepared to call the meeting to a start, a Code Pink protestor jumped out of his seat holding a sign, drawing the attention of television cameras in the room.

“This committee is not democratic,” the demonstrator said. “I speak on behalf of the 99 percent who are occupied. We are the people who are not being heard by this committee.”

The committee is currently trying to agree on at least $1.2 trillion in cuts before Nov. 24. If they can’t, automatic cuts would kick in.

      Well, halfway right!

Tax the rich- no…you can take all the rich‘s earnings and it still wouldn’t be a drop in the bucket.

End the wars..YEA!! That’s a HUGE CHUNK of wasteful spending to be saved there.

Keep Bush’s tax cuts permanent, and let’s have a HUGE ROUND OF TAX CUTS AND SPENDING CUTS!!

WOOOYEA!! DIG IT!!! (in Macho Man Randy Savage’s voice)

And, compared with the rest of the world, the poorest Americans ARE the rich. So, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Tax the poorest Americans and give the money to the rest of the world.

Legalized mugging looks really good when you’re the recipient of the proceeds of said mugging, but the tables always get turned and the mugger becomes the mugee. And, btw, what will you do when there’s no one left worth mugging?

See also: don’t bite the hand that feeds you. Hey, you morons who are trying to eat the rich, the phrase you’re searching for is, “Thank you.” If there weren’t rich people, none of the rest of us would have jobs. If you’re in a boat, and you start beating on the biggest guy who’s rowing the hardest, does it help or hinder your situation? And when he’s dead and/or gone, where does that leave you?

Bottom line: commandment #10= “Thou shalt not covet…anything that is thy neighbor’s.” Covet: to desire the unearned.

As far as ending the wars, there’s some agreement there. High-time for that debate.

Agreed… the wars have unfortunately been a waste because we are fighting to help people who will never understand and appreciate that we helped them, they have self sabotaged this help and in the end, after we liberated two countries, they will now go from being under a stalanist dictator and a theological murderous sharia cult, to rule under sharia martial law and its been a waste…

Bring the military home and put them on the US/Mexico border to secure it while a comprehensive triple layer security fencing system and seismic network can be put into place to stop illegals, drugs, guns, terrorists, etc….

How many jobs were created after the welfare for the rich that W. passed? After his great tax cut the economy tanked and jobs went overseas. We can stop it with the lie that tax cuts lead to job growth. Taxes were higher under Reagan and Clinton and both saw an increase in job creation. Ike’s 90% tax on the wealthy didn‘t end the golden age of the 1950’s that saw the largest growth of the middle class (along with union membership).

      @Unx,

You need to learn your history, Reagan did away with many Tax shelters and breaks which raised the actual taxes payer by the higher brackets.

“The tax reform of 1986, meanwhile, wasn’t designed to increase federal tax revenue. But that didn‘t mean that no one’s taxes went up. Because the reform bill eliminated or reduced many tax breaks and shelters, high-income tax filers who previously paid little ended up with bigger tax bills. ‘Some of these taxpayers were substantial contributors to the Republican Party and to the president’s re-election campaign, and had direct access to the White House. Reagan rebuffed their pleas,’ wrote J. Roger Mentz, the Treasury assistant secretary for tax policy in 1986, in a Tax Notes commentary last year.

All told, the tax increases Reagan approved ended up canceling out much of the reduction in tax revenue that resulted from his 1981 legislation.” http://money.cnn.com/2010/09/08/news/economy/reagan_years_taxes/index.htm

      @ UNIX
I think that the talking point that ENCINOM was repeating is that, under Reagan, the tax rate was higher than we have NOW, not that it was higher than BEFORE Reagan. Of course, ENCINOM has no interest in the fact that the tax reductions early in Reagan‘s Presidency are generally considered to be a big reason for the 1980’s growth in the economy. ENCINOM also ignores the fact that tax RATES are not the same as TAXES — because taxes include deductions. In 1986, huge numbers of “loopholes’ were closed in the Tax Code. The 90% rate during the Eisenhower admin. was pretty much never paid — income was deferred and a whole lot of rich persons’ “goodies” were tax deductible as corporate expenses. JFK lowered the tax rate and brought in a lot of economic growth. How about that? JFK understood what hardly ANY Democrats understand today. It is as if it is some kind of “lost knowledge” like Damascus steel manufacture.

According to Grover Norquist and his pledge, Reagan is gulity of a Tax Increase. In effect reducing the number of deductions and closing loopholes is a tax increase. Reagan after his 1981 tax cuts, used slight of hand to raise taxes when Bush Sr. was proven correct about his Voodoo economics. Also after his tax cuts the jobless rate jumped to 10%.
