Occupiers Plan Coordinated Port Shutdowns Stretching From Anchorage to San Diego

(The Blaze/AP)-  Anti-Wall Street protesters up and down the West Coast are joining an effort to blockade some of the nation’s busiest ports from Anchorage to San Diego.

Here is a video giving an overview of the planned port shutdowns:

Demonstrators were to gather to march on the Port of Oakland, which Occupy protesters successfully shut down in November. Marchers also descended on the sprawling port complex spanning Los Angeles and Long Beach as the work day begins.

Occupy groups also planned blockades in Seattle and Tacoma, Wash., the Canadian city of Vancouver, British Columbia, and in Portland, Ore.Occupy Protestors Plan Port Shutdown From Anchorage to San Diego

The protests being billed as action against “Wall Street on the waterfront” are perhaps the Occupy movement’s most dramatic gesture since police raids sent most remaining camps scattering last month. Demonstrators began forming those camps around the country about two months ago to protest what they call corporate greed and economic inequality.

Kari Koch, organizer with Shut Down the Ports Working Group of Occupy Portland, said by shutting down the port, Wall Street will be unable to create profit.

“We will not stand for corporate profits at the expense of working people, we will not stand for attacks on workers, and we will not allow our schools to be closed, social services slashed, and families to be impoverished by your greed!” Koch said Monday in statement.

Organizers hope to draw thousands to stand in solidarity with longshoremen and port truckers they say are being exploited.

“Taking on and blocking the 1 percent at the port is also taking on the global issue of exploitation by capitalism,” said Occupy Oakland blockade organizer Barucha Peller.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union, which represents many thousands of longshoremen up and down the West Coast, has distanced itself from the shutdown effort. The union’s president suggested in a letter to members that protesters were attempting to co-opt the union’s cause to advance their own agenda.

Protesters have cited a longstanding dispute between longshoremen at the Port of Longview in Washington and grain exporter EGT as a key reason for the blockades. Shutdown supporters say they’re not asking longshoremen to organize a work stoppage in violation of their contract but simply asking them to exercise their free speech rights and stay off the job, in keeping with the union’s historic tradition of activism.

If protesters muster large enough numbers to block port entrances, arbitrators could declare unsafe working conditions, which would allow port workers to stay home.

Organized labor appears divided over the port shutdown effort. In Oakland, which saw strong union support for the Nov. 2 general strike that culminated in the closing of the port, the city‘s teachers union is backing Monday’s action, while the county’s construction workers have come out against the shutdown, saying the port has provided jobs to many unemployed workers and apprentices.

The Port of Oakland has appealed to city residents not to join the blockade, which they say could hurt the port’s standing among customers and cost local jobs.

Occupy Protestors Plan Port Shutdown From Anchorage to San Diego

“The port is going to do all that it can to keep operations going. Our businesses need to hear that. Our workers need to know that,” said Port of Oakland spokesman Isaac Kos-Read.

Officials at West Coast ports say they have been coordinating with law enforcement agencies as they prepare for possible disruptions. Protesters say police violence against blockades in any city will trigger an extension of blockades in other cities as a show of resolve.

Update: Occupy Protestors plan to blockade the port of Vancouver, according to CBC news.

The protestors appeared early Monday morning and refused to allow trucks into the port facility, but did let workers on foot pass.

This strategy had already rankled some of the so-called “99%” in the Vancouver area.

A member of the B.C. Trucking Federation criticized this strategy, and told CBC News that: ”The impact to truck drivers who are generally owners-operators accessing the port would certainly be part of the 99 per cent that they purport to represent, and they will immediately lose money.”

Protestors also planned to target ferry terminals in Victoria Island, British Columbia, in conjunction with Occupy Wall Street port shutdowns across the west coast.

Why don’t encourage them to occupy a shipping container-maybe 10 to a box? Then close the box, and then send them to the parts of the world where there is real inequality between the bosses and the workers.

Figuring that one ship holds about 5-8 thousand containers, even with 10 at a time we are taking out the trash from 1 city per ship load. (50,000 to 80,000 morons per ship) A large port move 3-5 ships per day. Thats about quarter million morons per day per port. I figure in about 10 days we can have this problem all fixed. Next problem please

Now to all you BHL (bleed heart liberals) who might say that this is too cruel. This is the way that the Human smugglers work and you are doing your best to make their business effort profitable with all your encouragement of illegal immigration. I am only proposing 10 per box. They would load it up with as many as would fit.

It is amazing at peoples inability to see beyond themselves. Have you been told how to cook a live frog?
If you drop it into hot water it will just jump out. You place your live frog in a pot with cold water and turn the heat on slowly. The frog will cook before it realizes its cooked. Or the Asian story of death by a thousand cuts. Each cut is insignificant and tolerable but soon becomes more difficult and intolerable. That is exactly what has happened to us Americans over the past 100 years. Let us be reasonable people and except a small cuts in our rights for protection and loss of freedoms.

Shutting down the ports is and will always be difficult and unfair to the workers. Apparently the only way to get our leaders and the corporate moguls attention is to effect their pocket book. With a tremendous unemployment population and severe poverty level we as a people need to hold these ripoff artists accountable.

We trusted our legislators to pass rules and regulations to protect the common folk and they have betrayed us. Every legislator that voted for the lax rules and regulations that drove our economy into the ground should be replaced without question. Every legislator that voted for the so called stimulus package that only stimulated the wealthy, so called to big to fail, corporations should be removed and replaced. The Idea that it is better to deal with the devil we know than the one we don’t is ludicrous.

Wow! The American way has been denigrated to name calling and grouping. It is not capitalism that is under attack. It is our elected leaders that has made it possible for corporations to exhume exorbitant amount of profits on the back of the working class. State facts not labels and name calling.

Allen, it is clear to see that you have drank too much of the left’s kool aid and it is also clear that you are a product of our “new” education system. You people say that you are the 99% i say that is bull sh it! You are probably a late teen early twenty something who has not lived life yet. Life is what you make of YOURSELF not what others hand you or what you can get from the government. I worked as a A A Tool Machinist for most of my adult life. While i did i made a good wage but a few years ago i was in a major accident and am now disabled and can only work a few hours a day and i made a grand total of 6500 dollars for the whole year last year. You want to know something by your standards i am poor and should be getting help from the government, you know that social justice thing your always talking about. I DON’T WANT ANY FREE MONEY that the government has stole from other tax payers, i will make it on my own and if i need help i will ask my church for help. The problem with you so called 99% is you want everything handed to you, you don’t want to have to work for it and EARN IT FOR YOURSELF. Everything i own i got myself, no one gave me a thing but you see that’s the difference between my older generation and yours we were tough that if YOU WORKED HARD you could become anything you wanted. This was at least part of the reason for the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) or the Trans National Super-Highway that originates in Monterrey Mexico. And ‘will’ run directly through the center of the U.S. Unions are socialist in nature. And they can and will, as we see here, inflict any pain they see fit on the rest of the nation in order to coerce the ‘establishment’ to their point of view. Period.

The SPP would deny them that opportunity. Ships would dock near Monterrey and unload directly onto rail lines and trucks, as they do now. But the Port of Entry is built (and waiting) in Kansas City. Americans didn’t like the idea. And it has been pushed below the radar. But continues apace.

As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if this is, at least in part, is designed to aid that position. Government will tell Americans this is all part of “collective bargaining”. But it is really organized extortion of the people of America that government supports.

Just like the big bankers, big insurance, international finance that Americans were left holding the bag for wth bailouts while the crooks go scott free, we will be the ones screwed here. And government is 100% okay with it.

It has taken me years to discover that the rules for unemployment rate established by our individual states and the Federal government, is very inaccurate.

The only people that are counted are NEW applications. Those that have dropped off or failed to submit their applications on time are not counted. Those that have secured part time employment at a reduced rate of income are NOT counted.

A port shutdown really messes with the working man.

First the supply chain gets effed up. You wait for parts. You get sent home. The there is mandatory overtime later on. At 1st overtime is nice, more pay. But after 2 or 3 months of straight over time, it is a real grind. It become difficult to plant for vacation, birthdays or whatever. Unless work keeps you fit, you are more likely to suffer the ill effects of long shifts or lack of exercise.

Getting proper renumeration is constant struggle, but the OWS tactics is not the answer. Now they are another part of the problem.

Nothing helps the working man more than having his job shut down by a bunch of (paid) college malcontents and union thugs. Yep. Mr. Jones can proudly return home when he sees his job blocked and tell his family “no food for you tonight, we’re being helped by OWS!”

Bunch of easily controlled idiot zombies. I’m ashamed that so many of them exist in a nation where their values are supposed to be the antithesis of our national identity.

What has our “national identity” morphed in to anyway?? I’m 62 and can barely recognize this country anymore. I think our “identity” has largely been swallowed up by globalization, multi-culturism, criminals and financial chaos. (among other things)

The tea party acted at night, when nobody was conducting business. They shut down nothing, they raided ships with light guards.

These are not your friends V, where you derive that notion is beyond me. If your only cause is disrupting the system and sticking it to the cops, then you are not practicing a sound ideology. These people are open socialists, linking cause with them to abandon libertarianism/conservatism completely. There is no middle ground here. By their own admission this isn’t even about “Wall Street” any longer, now they’re just targetting companies that make money, that had nothing to do with the unconstitutional bailouts. And being against the bailouts is the only common ground any libertarian would have with these hooligans. Well, that’s gone with this.

Doesn’t matter, of course whether or not they acted at night or in daylight. They did effectively shut down the tea market, they destroyed the product. The Tea Party committed civil disobedience to get their point across when they threw tea into the harbor. So stop with the “civility” mess. When liberty is involved, no more Mr. Nice Guy. That‘s why we’re in the position we’re in now, where the idiots would normally call me all kinds of crazy and nutjobs and whacko and Ron Paul psychopath and all that garbage, now they have no choice but to accept the fact that we were right, and they were stupid.

FEMA CAMPS DO EXIST, it’s totally unconstitutional, and the weak veneer of civilization is disappearing like so much fog in the morning.

Those are my fellow countrymen. They can protest all they want, and I support it. I don’t have to subscribe to their ideology. And I will fight to prevent the police state detaining them in FEMA Camps.

Oh come now, spare me. Shutting down businesses that have done you no harm, who are doing you no harm, is NOT peacefully protesting. The 1st Amendment is clear on the “peacefully assemble” part. Putting people out of work is not peacefully protesting.

You’re going to great lengths to validate these bozos. You are knowingly and consciously choosing to associate with communists, socialists and fascists. That’s fine, but let’s not pretend any longer with “libertarian-conservative”. Libertarianism has nothing, and has never had anything, in common with anti-free market ideology. That’s what these OWS hooligans are, anti-free market idiots. Support them as you will, but expect no sympathy from actual real life libertarians.

I’m not going to great lengths to validate anything, they can protest all they want. If they block traffic, then arrest them or cite them, but they can protest all day long as far as I’m concerned.

Maybe the incompetent cops can keep the streets clear for the businesses to operate without violating anyone’s rights or pepper spraying people directly in the face while seated, or shooting some veteran in the face with a tear gas cannister (doubt it). Otherwise, the business owners should demand their tax dollars back for the cops public salaries and pensions.

I’m not associating with them by defending their right to protest.

And BTW, you’re not the arbiter of Conservative Libertarianism.

These idiots are like all the communicst/socalist in history. Make it HARD on the working man and they will demand the government do something. And believe me, this government HAS the answer, they are just waiting to use it. Who are these OWS people really crewing with? Big businesses or the work stiffs they employ? If there are no goods to stock, you think an employer will keep those ther working? Pull your head out and look at history, these “usefull idiots” are destroying this country. What if its cheap goods made in China?

We‘re going to be paying a day’s wage for a loaf of bread anyway as long as the Federal Reserve keeps imploding our currency and subsequently our country.

Of course the government has the answer and is waiting to use it…against EVERYONE, including the businessman and the protestor.

So really, the businessman has no choice but to join the protestors against the corrupt government.

Abolish the Federal Reserve. The real problem lies there in the printing of our currency. If you don’t understand this, then you are the idiot. I never said I subscribe to the OWS ideology.

If only these guys had a spiritual union ! They seem focused on having stuff, hating “the rich,“ and disrupting the lives of the people they expect to get ”stuff” from. These are a bunch of materialistic, lost , bullies. God provides for those who put their trust in Him. No guarantees about “stuff.” Not His focus !
