It’s never an easy experience for anyone when schools have to close due to budget problems. Parents feel cheated and ignored by the system, teachers have to be laid off or transferred, administrators end up kicked to the curb, and virtually everyone feels shortchanged. But there are good ways to react to it, and then there’s the way Oakland parents and teachers have reacted. From CBS San Francisco:
In protest of the proposed closure of a handful of Oakland elementary schools as a cost-cutting measure of the Oakland Unified School District, parents from the affected schools, teachers and community members have planned and executed demonstrations over the past few days – most recently, “occupying” Lakeview Elementary school Monday morning.
Dozens were participating in the protest on the school’s campus, at 748 Grand Ave., Oakland.
Yes, that’s right. Even a routine school closure is enough to bring down the thunder of an “Occupy” protest now. Watch this video report to see the protesters defend themselves in their own words:
Naturally enough, the protesters have been served eviction notices. And naturally enough, they have taken it as a point of pride that they will not comply. What lovely, rational people.

Posted on June 19, 2012 at 8:30pmI have a solution, teachers take whatever pay cut necessary to keep the schools open. In fact, make it year round education for the lollypop guild.

Posted on June 19, 2012 at 3:09pmExpel the Unions and NEA from our school system. It is criminal. They are communist, socialist. When they hold the children up as a barter chip I say fire them all and start over with teachers that put the children before themselves. I have no compassion for these people that say how much they care for the children, and then watch as they close the schools. If they had done a good job and taught the children well money would not be an issue but the school system has failed and deserver F’s not a raise.

Posted on June 19, 2012 at 12:42pmThe Department of Education is nothing more than another Progressive idea that failed. Educating our children starts in the home, and local schools should be supported by their communities, not the Federal Government.

Posted on June 19, 2012 at 7:10amIt is sad when teachers‘ and public servants’ personal benefits cause the taxpayer to lose services. The fat benefits these “public servants” receive have cost the taxpayers, school closings, loss of services like transportation, the arts and sports in schools, poor intrastructure and safety to our nation, just to name a few.
So instead of ccupying schools these people should be at the Statehouse telling Governer “Moonbeam” to restucture these rich benefits for a few “public servants” to make it better for all of our children and the taxpayers…Moonbean it’s time to call Govenor Walker for some fresh ideas!

Posted on June 19, 2012 at 6:55amPretty obvious what the Far Left hoped to achieve with their Occupy Movement. Civil disorder. Unrest. Disrespect for authority. ANARCHY. This is the most “ transparent” thing about the Obama Administration. Yes, Virginia, there really is a “ change” in America with the Obama people. We used to call it anarchy. But that was back when the word “ marriage” was defined as the union by two people of the opposite sex. That was back when American pride would require that one would ” ask not what America can do for you, but what you can do for America.” That was back when a president had only one name and one well- vetted identity. Long, long, ago.

Posted on June 19, 2012 at 5:10amWhere are the Teachers Union? Shouldn’t they give money to help their own instead of giving to corrupt
Report Post »politicians. They tell the teachers join the union, pay your dues and we will take care of you. (RIGHT)

Posted on June 19, 2012 at 5:51amIf your waiting for unions to make concessions to save their fellow workers you will be waiting for a long time they always eat their own. I guess they just don’t understand what a union is.

Posted on June 19, 2012 at 3:00amMaybe… if they did not have to pay so much for… Police, Riot & Fire Insurance, Union Benefits… there might be more Money for actual Education!

Posted on June 19, 2012 at 1:32amThe article says that enrollment is down, and the government can’t justify the cost to keep them open. These protestors need to complain to the Teacher’s Union, because salary and benefits are the largest expense of the public school system.

Posted on June 19, 2012 at 7:04amyes. and they’re still running the old Obama ” anti-bank” rhetoric. The old OWS / Canadian groups’ anti-capitalism. These international Lefties are so ” organized.“ So ” community organized.” DUH. We‘re not supposed to be smart enough to know that this isn’t a “ spontaneous” Oakland event ( that’s where…surprise…Van Jones started his ” we don’t trust the cops” groups. … so many surprises from the Far Lefties … ) I really am surprised to see the White House connection here. Never thought I’d see THAT in America. JFK must be twirling.
