DOVER, Del. (AP) — With the new season of “Saturday Night Live” comes a fresh batch of political satire — and Delaware Senate hopeful Christine O’Donnell is the first target.
The Republican candidate‘s past statements were fodder for the opening sketch on Saturday night’s broadcast on NBC.
The sketch involved actors portraying the tea party darling O’Donnell and two Republican officials concerned about her past statements, including speaking out against masturbation.
The actress playing O’Donnell says she is no longer against masturbation and, in fact, masturbates constantly. She also says she once ran a dog fighting operation and burned down somebody’s house.
The sketch ends with the actress donning a witch hat and flying away on a broom, a reference to O‘Donnell’s claim years ago that she dabbled in witchcraft in high school.

It does not bode well for the tea party. i like to look at it as faulty baby steps from a movement still trying to gain its footing. but i’m being optimistic. it’s hard to support someone on the grounds of individual freedoms who once campaigned against masterbation. of all the things to campaign against! i mean, who cares? talk about an intrusion of privacy from a nanny stater! ugh….lets put it behind us.

We all have some poor judgment in our past and it’s part of being human. Maybe she doesn’t seem to have that political skill of mezmorizing people when she speaks, but I believe she stands by the principles that she proclaims. Her oppenent is a socialist and it’s not just a passing phase of his youth, it’s who he is now. Truthfully, if the Democratic candidate wasn’t a Progressive, I’d consider voting for him/her, however, as this particular one is, she’s the only game in town. I do think that although she has a huge amount of self-imposed baggage (common on, 41 & never having a job), I do think she is emotionally stable (if I didn‘t I wouldn’t vote for her nor any other crackpots) & has integrity, & she will vote as she says, according to the Constitution. Posted on September 26, 2010 at 11:56amMy heart goes out to Ms McDonnell. She is a religious woman and attacking her beliefs is un-American and a violation of her Civil Rights. It’s not funny, it’s illegal.

@SRDEM65
As for attacking her beliefs (or lack thereof).
Is it:
Wrong? Maybe.
Questionable? Sure.
Illegal? No.
Satire is covered by the First Amendment (see Hustler Magazine, Inc. et al. v. Jerry Falwell–1980). If a person is going to run for political office and be in a position to set laws and direct the lives of others they should expect to be questioned and even be subject to satirical attacks. And sadly Ms. O’Donnell does have one of those pasts that makes such things easy.
And the sad truth is satire and other forms of low humor are popular.
Report Post »Jabril
Posted on September 26, 2010 at 12:46pmsrdem65,
With all due respect, it is neither un-American nor illegal. This is political speech which is at the very heart of the First Amendment. There is no civil rights violation going on here. I’m not even sure what that means in this context… poking fun at a public figure isn’t a civil rights violation.
It is also nothing new – just look at the federalist papers (wherein Publius discusses the fact that such bitter, politically tinged speech was rampant throughout the country while people debated whether to ratify the Constitution) and the political discourse at the time of the founding to see a whole host of pretty mean political satire and critique.
You may not like what is said (and I agree it is pretty rude stuff), but you have a right to speak out as well and discredit the views shown on SNL or else where. That is the whole foundation of our country. The market place of ideas requires more speech not less. If every view that offends someone is censored then soon no one will be left saying anything.

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 5:01pmSatire is one thing. But this sketch crosses the line and is all out slanderous (as were the SNL attacks against Sarah Palin in 2008). So why aren’t they being sued when they lie like this? Freedom of Speech does not give license to intentional misrepresentation and slander. If O’donnell loses her senate bid (which she may well anyway) I think a 100 million dollar lawsuit brought by the RNC against NBC might make them think twice about further attempts at slandering Reuplican candidates. And if they don’t learn their lesson from one lawsuit. Do it again. And again. One way or another, this has got to stop.
