Off-Duty Calif. Cop Charged With Murder After Allegedly Shooting Bar Patron Over Darts Comments

Off Duty Cop Kills Bar Patron in Game of Darts

Off-duty officer Dayle Long, who has now been charged with murder.

An off-duty cop in California has been charged with murder after he reportedly shot a fellow bar patron during a game of darts.

Reports indicate that Dayle William Long, a 10-year department veteran of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, yelled “I’m a cop, I can do whatever I want to” before pulling the trigger.

The Daily Mail has more:

An altercation allegedly broke out after the police officer told one of the friends ‘I’m better at darts than you are’, Chris Hull, 39, told Patch.com.

‘My buddy says, “Aw, you suck at darts”. (The man) says, “That’s why I’m a cop, I can do whatever I want to do”.’

Hull said his friend asked; ‘Really, you can do anything?’

The police officer then pulled out his gun, Hull claimed and after the group repeatedly asked him to put it away he ‘pops three rounds into my friend Sam’.

The victim is Samuel Vanettes, 36, who was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the the L.A. Times, he was a gas station attendant who happened to be drinking at the same time as Long, and things took a turn for the worse when Long started drinking whiskey:

Long had been sitting alone and drinking, according to a Vanettes family member, who asked not to be identified. Vanettes introduced himself and they began playing darts, said the relative, who added that he received a firsthand account from the sister and boyfriend.

“They were getting along good,” he said. “When the cop started having more whiskey, he started getting belligerent.

“He lifted his shirt up and showed his gun. Sam was standing by the dartboard. He said, ‘You don’t want to do this; you’re a nice guy.’ And he shot him. That‘s what I’m told.”

Some reports Long then called police to report the shooting. However, he wasn’t so much turning himself, a family member told the Times.

“He was calling dispatch and telling them shots were fired, like he was a cop,” the relative said. He was eventually arrested.

If convicted, Long faces 50 years in prison.

To sweep the floors at a Nuclear Power plant you need a full background investigation and a mental evaluation for every plant you work at. There is not one police department in the country that has any requirements approaching this standard. Officers themselves should demand such a standard and purge their ranks for their own good and standing with the public.

Let’s not condemn the entire law enforcement profession. This is a terrible crime by a wacko who shouldn’t have had a badge and a gun to begin with. We in law enforcement are sickened by crimes like these. Unfortunately, there’s a tiny 1% out there that shouldn’t be cops but 99% of our profession are honorable men and women that are fighting and risking their lives, and dying almost every day for their communites, states and country.

This is a direct result of America’s police departments lowering their standards. We use to think there was a small portion about 1% “Bad Cops” The numbers are growing, there is no telling where they stand. If you were to look at the out-right “dirty” cops, to cops that fix tickets. In my opinion were at nearly 35% “Bad Cops”. Just an estimate. Experience, friends on the force and so forth. We already see police departments enforcing laws at will, next will be an out-right turn against the American people. Good luck, pray for the return of our Lord.

Yup, they only arrest (taking freedom) from the most violent and lawless people in the community who make threats against them every day. Until you walk in their shoes don’t pass judgement. I agree there is a lot of corruption in law enforcement, as any area of our culture these days. Why aren’t all of the people in the community calling for more strict hiring guidlines, oh wait… Have you ever really looked at what is required to be in law enforcement? The regulations state pretty much they want Bill Gates as long as he never passed gas in public, then when they find a person who can pass through the gauntlet they put them to work 12 hours a day rotating shifts no holidays off etc. Then we all wonder how they go crazy after they get power for, most likely, the first time in their lives. To all of you who pass judgement on ALL cops, where are your butts, besides sitting in a chair posting faceless comments about things, most likely, you can not understand. You are the new libs calling the vets baby killers!!! How dare you. I would like to think all of us as members of our own communities would hear this kind of story and then go thank a local cop that does a good job. Can you imagine investigating crimes that would reduce most people to a pile of mush then give a speeding ticket being called every name in the book. Yup I agree go back to the old cop ways with lead filled leather saps and batons, oh wait these same complaints happened then too. Dometic freedom protectors su

What a complete troglodyte. Here’s a simple message that any child introduced to gun safety is going to hear over and over: Drugs (including alcohol and RX) and guns never go together. If Officer Hardrod was going to imbibe, the gun is removed from his person.
As always, the “all the facts aren’t out” enablers and apologists will take a stab at defending a goon with a badge. Why? This guy wasn’t acting as an officer of the law. He was a drunken sot who made a bad decision (drinking and carrying a weapon) that led to homicide. What could a drunk’s defense be? “I felt threatened by a dart.” As always, I’m not anti-cop; I am anti-bully.
I enjoy alcohol. I own and use guns. The two don’t mix. Eddie Eagle, here is your poster child for what NOT to do as a gun owner. This idiot failed with one of the basic rules of gun safety and cavalierly ended another human being’s life because of his lack of restraint.
Other cops should want to see this miserable failure pay for his idiocy and his crime. Gun owners in general should take this as an object lesson.

During our conversation I thought about bringing up the subject of the Oathkeepers. I feared he would have attempted to label me as a terrorist for trying to recruit him.

You folks in law enforcement need to make a proactive effort to clean up the ranks, because everytime a story like this one comes out in the media, it causes THOUSANDS of additional people to fear you and turn against you more. Sorry but that’s reality.

I hope this guys wife, family sues the sh i t out of riverside pd. So many of the law enforcement go un checked, its the police state we are now living in, no longer to protect and serve, rather to abuse, create a crime where there isn’t one, and villainies law abiding citizens at will. Further just look at their uniforms these days, why do they all dress tactical? no not just a basic uniform and a hand gun rather, m-16 body armor, military all the way. We have enough swat, FBI, CIA, State police, Rangers, ATF, Homeland Security,Bomb squads, Fish and game, Secret service, ICE, and hundreds more who are more military and very powerful. No longer do we have normal police forces we are shifting to military style iron fisted control. And then we wonder why these folks have attitudes, narcissism, power trips, we are teaching them a way that pits all of them against the rest of us.

Blatent disregard for human life by a POLICE OFFICER, remember they are constantly referred to as heroes. Does this stop when they remove their badge?????? You can’t have it both ways, if they are all heroes by virtue of authority than a much higher standard is expected. In this case this hero killed an unarmed human. This type of thing just doesn’t happen because of alcohol, its an inherent inward personality trait.

Macpappy: geeez, man. Come on a ride along with us. We do not “all” feel that way. Yes, we may have a dark sense of humor, but that is because if all the sick and foul stuff we see on a day to day basis. We deal with the worst of the worst. You don’t see that. But we don’t feel like we want to shoot everyone who argues with us, or hate those whom we protect.

Intoxication. Guns and intoxication do not mix, whether he is an Officer of the Law, or just a citizen. We expect more from those assigned the duty of protect and serve, but once alcohol or drugs are part of the mix… chaos happens.

Can’t reason with those that are drunk and high… no matter what the intoxicant.

“Can’t reason with those that are drunk and high… no matter what the intoxicant.”

Not completely accurate. When was the last time you saw or even heard of someone buzzed on pot starting a fight? Getting in a car accident? Shooting someone in a bar?

Alcohol is legal yet look at all the fights, accidents, rage and killings ‘IT’ does. Yet you don’t see or hear of it with marijuana.

I get your point, I understand. Yet inaccuracies repeated perpetuate ignorance.

As far as that cop… up to 50 years? He should get Life in prison in the least for cold blooded MURDER.

I hope he rots in prison. There are plenty of gun toters out there with the same attitude and they don’t have to be Police or Law Enforcement to have an above the Law attitude. Each thing when singular gives some people an air of invincibilty or a false sense of courage whether it be guns or intoxicants on their own. Mix the both of them and stupid does as stupid is…

Granted, most out there killing people with these guns, weapons or equalizers reside in the leftist community and we need to protect ourselves from them, but guns, alcohol, drugs and stupidity know no politics in some cases if that makes sense. I’ve carried weapons most all of my adult life and know what havoc and chaos they can cause in a split second. Seen it up close and personal.

Pot had nothing to do with it. Stop watching Refer Madness. W i s k e y !
To many Cops think like this coward! They should require double sentences for abusing public authority. 50 years should be 100. Union will get him down to Involentary Manslaughter. He’ll go through rehab and live off full benifits and social security for the rest of his life then, his spouse will get to do the same. Oh hell yes we need to raise taxes. Cop was more right than wrong! He can kind of do what ever he wants!

      > MUCH. I never mentioned pot in my original posting. I wrote intoxicant. You and the purveyor of pot mentioned pot. Now tell me MUCH… why smoke pot? Is it not to get intoxicated? Pot doesn’t cause paranoia and stupidity from the intoxicating affects caused by smoking the intoxicant called pot? Or is that just the figment of a pot smoker’s imagination… when smoking pot? See what I’m getting at? Circular firing squad reasoning from those that need intoxication in their lives… alcohol or drugs.

Yeah, have you tried to reason with a drunk man holding a gun with a badge on his belt who thinks he can do anything. Even sober you are dealing with a person with a gun, with a badge on his belt, who thinks he can do anything he wants to. All cops are **** eaters to one degree or another.

OBSERVERMI it happens all the time but there is not specific crime for what you describe. If stoned and you are in a wreck you get charged with driving under the influence. Most people attribute that to drinking. Intoxicants have different effects on different people. Example Tequila some drink it and get very happy, some get very aggresive and mad. Same substance different effects based on the idividuals chemical reactions in the brain. (If one is present)

Bootlickers always rationalize that anyone who has negative criticism of the Nazis in Blue must have had some negative experience with them…while breaking the law.

I swear you’ll hear the same weak logic from every single one of those bootlickers. Nine times out of ten, they’re cops themselves, friends of cops, family of cops, has some sexual attraction to cops, worships their heroes, etc.

They present this garbage every single time without fail, they’ll accuse you of being a criminal, and generally make excuses for Nazi behavior while casting aspersions on the person.

What are people thinking? Things just keep getting crazier by the day. I know there are good cops who really want to help and bad cops who want to continue to bully people because they have small minds. Everyone I know who used to be policeman has left the law enforcement field. Main reasons, if you think there was a crime committed arrest and let judge decide, tired of being a tax collector and got tired of seeing fellow officers harrass and threaten citizens knowingly violating their constitutional rights and being forced to keep quite because of the blue wall of silence. You don’t tell on fellow offisers.

marine249, curious you give hard time to single parent but not country girl, yet same comment. They the cops most of them paint all of us with that broad brush you speak of. Its for their safety. yeah right, a little respect goes along way, no longer can you respect authority as a whole when the entire mentality has shifted to a police state. The facts are clear to me, I see the attitude daily by these so called peace officers. They are not very peaceful in general, haven’t you ever been pulled over for a simple presumed traffic violation? I have, wow you think I was a terrorist for getting a ticket for no seat belt 400$ that I was wearing. Thats one of my personal examples. The whole event was invasive not safety related. i was in Iraq, I pay my taxes except for the one ticket ( falsely accused ) I have no record but the way I was treated he was using a broad brush. Where are you going? where are you coming from? etc, etc, I had my baby and wife in the car. You tell me .

I will ask again. Did you put in your applications? I bet most anti cop posters could stop all crime with a smile and a wink. Walk in their shoes. Generalizatios that are being posted here are no better than making racist remarks. How dare the posters here condemn the police. If you have a bad encounter with a cop report it. That is your job. Then follow up with the supervisors until you get satisfied with the response. If that doesn’t happen there are plenty of Lib media outlets to voice your FACT based concern. I would be willing to bet most that had a bad encounter just let it go as another a$$ hole cop thing. Be a part of the solution not a part of the problem.

Countrygirl and singleparent: you have conducted reaserch with every (Countrygirl) or most (singleparent) police officers? Wow, that must have been time consuming an expensive. Where can I find your research?
Korbin: you have encounters with cops every day? Yes, you sound like an outstanding citizen. Probably someone who purposefully violates the law to bait cops into encounters, like the sovereign citizens. Do the job we have to do and your generalization of cops will change, you will see we are te ones with integrity and honor, unlike the rotten filth we see day to day, and still are able to keep a smile and come home to our families as if we have a normal job and put it behind us.
