Off-Duty Cop Credits Divine Intervention in Rescuing Kidnapped Woman

Do you believe in God?
Lt. Tommy Butler does and the Scotland County, N.C., deputy sheriff believes it was His divine intervention that helped him rescue a kidnapped woman trapped inside her abductors’ car trunk.
Butler says he was off-duty when he “heard the Lord speaking to him,” the Daily Mail reports. An unusual instinctual reaction aroused Butler when he saw a car run a stop sign, he says. Even though his shift had ended three hours earlier, he says he knew he had to pursue the car.
“I really just thought it was a going to be another stop, but then I starting getting a feeling that I needed to stop this car as quickly as possible,” he said. “Something just said, ‘Get this car stopped’, and I reckon it was the Lord speaking to me,” Butler recounts.
What ensued was a high-speed chase that reached 115mph.
When the car finally pulled off to the side of the road, the driver took off into the woods. But Butler‘s attention was drawn away from the fleeing suspect by frightened screams emanating from the vehicle’s trunk.
“I would have ran him down,” Butler told the Laurinburg Exchange. “But when you hear screaming coming from the trunk, that takes priority.”
Butler was able to free the frightened woman who called him her “guardian angel.”
The woman — whose name has been kept private for safety reasons — said she had stopped for gas when she was approached by a pregnant woman who asked for a ride. When she agreed, the woman’s boyfriend also got into the car.
Butler said the couple ordered the woman to drive them to a different location, and once they got there, they robbed her of her cell phone and the $8 she had with her, claiming they had a gun. They then forced her into the trunk, Butler said. The man dropped the pregnant woman off at one location and continued on with their victim still locked in the car’s back end.
Police later identified and arrested the couple. “We don’t know for sure what their purpose was going to be. I’m just glad we were able to intervene,” Laurinburg police Capt. Kim Monroe said.

Posted on February 4, 2011 at 11:08pmMr. Butcher, when you are in a tight spot and need help from somewhere-you-know-not-where, (I could get snotty here but God told me not to) to whom do you call out to for moral support, guidance, or a miracle?
If you REALLY think there is no higher power than yourself, try sticking your finger in the place a lightbulb fits in a connected lamp and turn on the switch.

I doubt if there were a god, it would pick this point to intervene.

Posted on February 4, 2011 at 11:07pmMRBUTCHER what if your wrong? I like my chances better than yours, I know there is a God but if I were wrong I have lost nothing. As wrong as you are, you have lost it all. How can anyone look around at this beautiful world and everything in it and believe it just happened. Life is about choices and choices have consiquences. I won’t feel sorry for you because you are in America and you fortunately have a choice. When God speaks Christians listen.

Posted on February 4, 2011 at 11:06pm*Sigh. And first for this awesome story has to be an atheist. Please ignore that folks and don’t spend this entire thread arguing with him.
Hearing this story almost brought me to tears, as I believe in the same thing. I was an MP in the Marine Corps for 9 months or so (Fleet Assitance Program. Nevermind.) And I know cops get complacent about such things as “running a stop sign”. It happens so much that one day on base I wrote over 25 tickets parked in plain site for “California stops” as we put it, rolling through a stop sign. “Ho-hum” until you find something interresting like a revoked liscence. Other than that, it is a typical “watch for craziness, but all is well” stop.
For a cop, who has been off duty for 3 hours to even have the inclination to stop a “stop sign” violater is amazing, and I believe him whole heartedly that he was led to pursue this.
And I say that based on what I just said, even if I didn’t believe what I do about God.
Semper Fi, my good man! And GREAT counter story to the horrific beating vid from Houston!

Report Post »It is not possible to prove a negative.
No one can prove God does not exist, ever. It is logically not possible. You can’t prove that Lord Xenu does not exist either.
The burden of proof falls to those who believe to those who don’t.

Posted on February 4, 2011 at 10:53pmMr. Butcher, my daddy never told me a lie. My mother — that’s a different story. There was a reason my father never told me a lie; and when he told me something, I could take it to the bank.
When I was a kid, I asked him if he believed in God. He looked at me in disbelief and said, “Certainly I believe in God.” I asked him how he knew He was real. Daddy told me, “I am sober, aren’t I? That in itself is a miracle.” Then he asked me, “Look around — can you make a tree? (No, sir.) Can you put life into a human being? (No, sir.) Have you ever noticed the orderliness of nature? (Yes, sir.) Well, God can and does, and He did all this. And, he made you my daughter.” I figured that, since I had the best daddy in the world (in my opinion), Daddy must be right.
I’m sober. That’s another miracle. I just came from a room full of miracles tonight.

Posted on February 5, 2011 at 11:29amWhen you see evil, you treat it as evil. “Get behind me Satan, for it is written, thou shalt worship the Lord, thy God, and HIM only serve”. Don’t argue with evil ones because Satan is very real and all around us. How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver. This is the day that the Lord has made, not Mohammad or any other.

Posted on February 5, 2011 at 11:48amThis was a brave man. Not just that he is in a dangerous profession and that chasing this crook could have cost him his life, he is perfectly willing to do that to protect his town. That’s brave, and I commend all peace officers as I commend all who are in or have been in our military defending freedom. Too bad there is evil in this world, but there is.
Now, I think this peace officer is doubly brave. Why? Because he was willing to tell others about how he got nudged to first follow and then chase the crook. He knew there were Mr. Butchers and Deutschers in the world who would laugh at him and make fun of him. But, they don’t understand because it did not happen to them. This peace officer was apparently struck by the difference he felt inside, because it was not the usual. Something was different about this one instance, and he was compelled to try to put it into words, knowing it was of God. And he was brave enough to speak in spite of all the Butchers and Deutchers in this free world. You‘d think they’s praise this man’s bravery, but instead they insult his God. Why does God offend them so much? Why can’t they simply understand that millions of people believe in God, and allow them that their belief is born of an intellect that searched the scriptures for this God, and found him? Perhaps if they weren’t so prideful, stuff like this might give them pause. That it only gave them an opportunity to attack the beliefs of others indicates the pride is mighty strong in their character.
