Offensive Bumper Sticker? Say Hello to a $50 Fine

We see bumper stickers everyday. Some make us laugh, some are tacky, some are obnoxious. But a new Tennessee law will now regulate and penalize drivers for bumper stickers the state deems to be obscene.
“Starting Friday, Tennessee drivers caught with obscene or patently offensive bumper stickers, window signs or other markings on their vehicle visible to other drivers face an automatic $50 fine.
The law also includes movies other drivers can see playing inside of vehicles, including adult films.
Tennessee code 55-8-187 had allowed judges to decide on a fine from $2 to $50 based on their opinion.”
Necessary or an attack on your freedom of speech?

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 5:53pmeven the freedom of speech has limits. As you know you can not walk into a crowded theater and yell fire.
And I really think they are talking truly obscene bumper stickers .. I drive all day 5 days a week and you would not believe some of the ones I see.. From just a pic of a middle finger to the words F.U and much worse..

Report Post »A) we do not live in a moral and just society.
B) Your small child is gonna know what F.U. means (and probably worse) the first day he/she steps into the school system and out onto the playground.
It‘s time for people to stop whining about what their children see and take the RESPONSIBILITY to teach them that that kind of behaviour isn’t appropriate. Yes I agree we shouldn’t have to, but we do.

Report Post »John Campbell
Posted on July 3, 2011 at 10:39pmLets not let this one go without putting it in proper context. Yelling “Fire” in a crowded theater that’s not on fire is a crime and has nothing to do with free speech. It is not in any way a limitation of rights. The theater is private property, not government owned, and the person who commits such an act is willfully attempting to cause harm. The movie theater patrons and the movie theater owner has their rights violated by such an act. The suggestion that not being able to yell “fire” in a crowded theater that’s not actually on fire is somehow a limitation of rights is a major misnomer and promoted by those seeking to justify the destruction of rights.

Posted on July 3, 2011 at 9:07pmWhile there have been many bumperstickers I’ve wanted to pull off (like most anything with Obama) I’ve held that impulse in check. I can understand that some displays are very offensive (like those stupid things hanging in a pouch from a trailer hitch) and I wish people were smarter than that, but I resist pulling them off or setting them on fire. I believe this law has good intentions, but it is obviously bad law.

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 8:46pmI agree, as with most laws the liberals put up, on the surface (at best) they have the appearance of good intentions. But when the rubber hits the road, their (un?)intended consequences FAR outweigh whatever good they “intended” to accomplish.
“Live free or die.” It’s not just a motto, it truly is a way of life.
When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people, there is freedom.

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 8:30pmPolitical Correctness is destroying our freedom, true. As it is intended to do.
Thoughts, words and deeds must conform to the state requirements of what is acceptable, so that people are easy to lead and control. It is all by evil design, as history has shown us this pattern and strategy by various rulers of the world, past – and present.
I hope every conservative voter is extremely serious about *change* of the current occupation in the Peoples House.
It is our duty as American citizens of this Republic rid ourselves of the liars and thieves elected by those Useful Idiots in our midst, and we must kick them all to the curb. There is no more *hope* that things will get better in our country until we do.
God help us if we do not get rid of every single liberal now in office, get them out of our schools, and get them off the judiciary benches. They are using every means foul to destroy this great nation.
Please spread the word folks. Who can bear to see what the marxists have in store for us if we do not vote them out in 2012?..!!

In 2009 I saw Tn. in my rear view mirror as I fled to protect my family from the war that is raging there. If you’re white Memphis is a dangerous city. Roll up you windows and lock your doors and keep driving until you start seeing a few white people. Any bumper sticker that’s anti Obamao would not only be considered offensive, it would justify any action taken against you for having it. That’s been an unwritten law for quite some time down there. Posted on July 4, 2011 at 12:42pmTN recently also banned “transmitting distressing images” via the internet. Now this? They’ve already begun handing out fines for bumper stickers. http://poorrichardsnews.com/post/7124707108/tennessee-bans-obscene-bumper-stickers What‘s up with TN’s governor Haslam. He’s supposed to be a Republican.

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 1:21pmI like the idea of blocking the profanity, blocking the porn. We the people don’t have to tolerate DEBAUCHERY. Make it a FINE. Punish those sinners for making little kids see things that are bad.

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 2:58pmAhhh, I don‘t know where you’ve been but the Judges would find a Jesus fish offensive and the Co-exist sticker just fine. Remeber the left dispises Christianity and loves radical Islam. Just saying, keep it real.

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 4:57pm“offensive” is subjective. No one has the right to subjectively apply their brand of “justice”. That includes the government. What the hell day are we celebrating today, anyway?

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 10:02pmI thought the cars with the COEXIST stickers were tolerant of all religions. But you just pointed out how angry the drivers are against Christians!

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 10:17pmBut I do find the COEXIST bumper stickers offensive! But not for the reason you state. I have a personal dislike with people or groups that have convert, enslave or kill as part of their modern religious doctrine. So no I will not coexist!

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 6:59amYou‘re more likely to catch a judge that doesn’t agree with my “Global Warming is a Hoax” bumper sticker than one that is offended by your “Coexist” bumper sticker, but I agree with your overall theme.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 9:03amMen make the laws. There is no decency anymore in our society, and I’ve felt like covering up some of these bumper stickers myself. I suppose you like to look at the fake testicles hanging from the rear bumper of some red necks truck, right? Classy, really classy.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 9:33am***** PACKING HEAT: I gotta agree. This is one bad action/police state type of legislation. This thing is a waste of time and taxpayers money. This will be in and out of the courts for being “Overly Broad” in its implementation/interpretation. I can understand and probably accept you can’t have some sticker that has vulgarities, serious vulgarities printed on it. But telling someone “If you can read this your are too close to my ass” isn’t worth getting a ticket for. Telling someone to F>>> Off, now I can see a ticket being issued. IJMHO.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 11:02amI find your coexist sticker not offensive, but naive.
Try going to saudi arabia with your sticker. If they are feeling kind, your head will be mailed back to your home in a box.
muslims believe their god is the only god. Your telling them to coexist is to tell them to disobey their teachings.
You fly your little sticker here because you know no one will do anything to you, not because you are brave. If you were in muslim land, I would bet money you would don a burkha, and keep your mouth shut after you burned that sticker to save your head.
Besides, i think people with a bunch of stickers plastered all over the rear of their cars are just a bunch of big mouths.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 11:57amthe issue is about porn.. and no, porn is not a speech.. it’s a violation of the rights of women and children.. and even men. Most importantly, a society that recognizes nudity as profane/violating and forbids it from the open arena, is a much safer society. European countries that promote open nudity, for example, Germany, is breading grounds for rape and child molestation. These crimes go unreported and if they are reported, better than half the time are turned away so the gov‘t doesn’t recognize the problems.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 12:29pmThere appear to be far more liberal judges siding with the destruction of the first. Pre-crime, thought crime, hate crime… …you are right the law has no place in our society but your analogy was far less likely. They are fining for any anti-obama stickers in Memphis.
