Office of Management and Budget Could Soon Unionize Under AFL-CIO

Usually, when an organization wants to release news without really making it news, it will do so on Friday evening. So maybe it‘s not surprising that it wasn’t until late Friday that a branch of the AFL-CIO confirmed that the Office of Management and Budget — the White House office in charge of number-crunching — could soon unionize.
ABC’s Jake Tapper reports:
Peter Winch, deputy director of field services and education for the American Federation of Government Employees confirmed to ABC News that his organization, which is affiliated with the AFL-CIO, has been meeting with employees of the OMB in the past few months to discuss their work conditions and desire to have more say over the conditions of their employment.
Enough employees – more than 30% — are interested for a union to be formed, he said. The union would be for mid- and lower-level employees.
Winch said that while the employees generally like their work at OMB, even with long hours and working on weekends, “there have been reorganizations they would have liked to have had more voice over.”
The next step will be for the employees to file a petition for an election with the Federal Labor Relations Authority’s Washington DC regional office. That filing could come as soon as today though the move could come on Monday.
And while the federal government is supposed to stay neutral about such moves, the administration seems quite tickled at the news.
Kenneth Baer, OMB communications director, told ABC the Obama administration “is a strong supporter of the right of workers to organize. It is up to the people working at any bargaining unit to decide if they want to join a union or not. Whatever the decision of these employees may be, we are committed to working together to serve the President and the American people.”
Over at National Review, Andrew Stiles isn’t convinced neutrality is a top priority. He writes: “Will be interesting to see whether the White House takes being ‘required to stay neutral’ as seriously as Senate Democrats do in terms of their being ‘required to produce a budget.’”
According to CNN, the union (AFGE) already represents 600,000 federal and D.C. government workers. It is currently in the running to represent TSA employees who were recently granted permission to unionize.

Posted on May 16, 2011 at 3:16pmif they unionize, the first thing the government should do is negotiate to bring salaries down to the level of private sector office workers. this is all about trying to guarantee democratic votes. and getting more union pac money. but let them strike during a different administation and like the great ronald reagan did to the air traffic controllers ( reagan was a former president of the screen actors guild, but understood public employee unions hurt the american people.) another president can just fire all of them.

Posted on May 16, 2011 at 3:16pmThe day unions take over the federal work force, our country is doomed! Guess we all know that is precisely what Obama wants as he thinks our Constitution is a disgusting piece of paper! Taking control of our total lives is his goal! Well, Mr. Prez, you swore to “uphold and defend” that pesky piece of paper AND WE ARE GOING TO HOLD YOU TO IT! I find so many citizens who are so stupid to their own rights and how those rights are being violated every day! Just pray Obamacare is overthrown by the Supreme Court as that seems the only option we can hope for–I’ve already lost one of the best doctors ever as she closed her office and would not practice the Obama way! Another specialist I see has opted out of medicare so I now pay the full bill when I get service because my insurance co. will not honor her choice!

Posted on May 16, 2011 at 5:46pm@SHERIS……. Very good post!!! Yes, all of us need to pray that obamacare is over-turned by the Supreme Court. I heard Neil Cavuto say…..”that with all the republicans falling by -the-way-side, that this leaves it open for obama big time”. Especially with all the money he is raising….a billion dollars. If he gets another 4 years, it is hello obamacare for good, unless the Supreme Court comes through, which is a big question no one can answer. We think we are doomed now, wait if he gets another 4 years. I can not understand for the life of me how he could win with his terrible arrogance, marxist, against “We the People”, deliberately destroying America, attitude. I can’t stand to look at him. Posted on May 16, 2011 at 3:22pmWhen government enables and strengthens unions, dues–paying members flourish, filling union coffers. This allows public-sector unions to use big money and political clout to elect favorite political candidates, almost always Democrats. Union bosses then get to negotiate with the very public officials they usher into office.
Public-sector unions are among the most powerful special interest groups in America. In the 2010 elections, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) was the biggest outside spender with total contributions of nearly $90 million. More than 98 percent of this money went to Democratic candidates and causes. That’s especially disconcerting when the votes of members were nearly evenly split between Republicans and Democrats. It’s clear that union dues are advancing the quid pro quo relationship of union leadership and government officials.
There is no right to collective bargaining. It is an unconstitutional legislated privilege given to unions by friendly lawmakers. The federal courts have been clear on this point. All citizens have the right to associate in groups to advocate their special interests to the government. But it is something entirely different to grant any one interest group special status and access to the government decision-making process.

“While capital is important it achieves nothing on its own. The actual work done by companies that produces the revenue is performed by people.”
Capital represents labor, just like money does (or is supposed to, which is not necessarily the case with fiat money). If you take rocks and wear them down smooth, then you now have capital in the form of sling ammo that can be used to kill your food.
Now, here’s where I talk about the labor theory of value.
It is true that it cost you a certain amount of time and labor to make sling ammo, and you should not reasonably expect to be paid less than it cost you to make them.
But here’s where the labor theory of value breaks down: It may have cost YOU a certain amount of time and labor, but it may cost someone else LESS time and labor to do the same thing – for example, if through a series of trades, I acquire a barrel and a certain kind of sand, I can produce sling ammo cheaper than you – AND I can multitask because the barrel is rolling the sand and rocks while I’m doing something else.
So because I can produce it cheaper, I can sell it cheaper and underbid you and get more money by volume. And if you get a bigger barrel – or more barrels – then you can produce sling ammo cheaper than me. Meanwhile, a lot more animals are killed for food, and everyone benefits.
That’s how a free market works.

(continued from prior post)
“The investor deserves a reasonable return for his or her investment. A return that is should not be based on the exploitation of workers in any country.”
The investor always gets a reasonable rate of return if both parties of a transaction agree to the terms in the context of a free market – this is true by definition. If a bunch of people are willing to work for a lower wage, then chances are that if someone wants a higher wage, then the employer is going to wisely hold out for someone who will work for that lower wage.
Another thing you have to understand is, with fiat money (like our US Dollar), the money itself isn’t worth anything, and so the number of dollars you have doesn’t matter as much as how much value a dollar represents relative to goods and services being traded by any given person.
But the most fundamental thing you need to understand about economics is that the only reason people trade is to acquire something they want or need more than the thing they’re trading; meaning that all trade concerns, first and foremost, the two individuals actually engaging in a transaction – and since some people have different desires and needs, one good or service is not going to be worth the same thing to all people.
which is why there really is no such thing as a “correct” price – prices and costs are always in flux with the varying wants, needs, and productivity of any given individual.

Posted on May 17, 2011 at 6:52amHow to fix the problem, Impeach Obama and have him removed from office, term limits on all elected officials. No office should more than two terms or 8 years. Go to a flat tax and get rid of the IRS, go private with Social Security. This should help downsize some of the goverment. Next give every tax paying citizen $300,000.00. However with this money they must pay off all there credit card debt, buy one American made vehicle and pay off home mortage. Now look at what we did, paied off all credit card debt, sold american goods and jumped started the ecomony, and helped the housing market. Also lower all elected officials salary and disband all UNIONS in the federal goverment.
