Leon Panetta Believes Israel Could Strike Iran Within MonthsDefense Secretary Leon Panetta is reportedly worried over the growing possibility that Israel will attack Iran over the next few months.

According to The Washington Post, Panetta believes there is a strong likelihood that Israel will strike Iran in April, May or June — before Iran enters what Israelis described as a “zone of immunity” to commence building a nuclear warhead.

In a short matter of time, Israelis fear Iranians will have stored enough enriched uranium in deep underground facilities to successfully produce a weapon — and that only the United States could then stop them militarily.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doesn’t want Israel’s fate to rest solely on American action. The Post adds:

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak may have signaled the prospect of an Israeli attack soon when he asked last month to postpone a planned U.S.-Israel military exercise that would culminate in a live-fire phase in May. Barak apologized that Israel couldn’t devote the resources to the annual exercise this spring.

President Obama and Panetta are said to have cautioned the Israelis that the United States opposes an attack, believing that it would derail an increasingly successful international economic sanctions program and other non-military efforts to stop Iran from crossing the threshold. But the White House hasn’t yet decided precisely how the United States would respond if the Israelis do attack.

The Obama administration is conducting intense discussions about what an Israeli attack would mean for the United States: whether Iran would target U.S. ships in the region or try to close the Strait of Hormuz; and what effect the conflict and a likely spike in oil prices would have on the fragile global economy.

Meanwhile, the administration seems to favor staying out of the conflict unless Iran hits U.S. assets.

This U.S. policy — signaling that Israel is acting on its own — might open a breach like the one in 1956, when President Dwight Eisenhower condemned an Israeli-European attack on the Suez Canal. Complicating matters is the 2012 presidential campaign, which has Republicans candidates clamoring for stronger U.S. support of Israel.

Administration officials caution that Tehran shouldn’t misunderstand: The United States has a 60-year commitment to Israeli security, and if Israel’s population centers were hit, the United States could feel obligated to come to Israel’s defense.

According to the WaPo, Israelis believe that a military strike could be limited and contained. They would reportedly bomb the uranium-enrichment facility at Natanz and other targets, but an attack on the buried enrichment facility at Qom would be strategically difficult.

Iranians would retaliate, but Israelis doubt that the action would be an overwhelming barrage, with rockets from Hezbollah forces in Lebanon. One Israeli estimate is that the Jewish state might have to absorb 500 casualties.

Israelis point to Syria’s lack of response to an Israeli attack on a nuclear reactor there in 2007. Iranians might show similar restraint, because of fear the regime would be endangered by all-out war. Some Israelis have also likened a strike on Iran to the 1976 hostage-rescue raid on Entebbe, Uganda, which was followed by a change of regime in that country.

WaPo adds that U.S. officials see two possible ways to dissuade Israel from such an attack:

Tehran could finally open serious negotiations for a formula to verifiably guarantee that its nuclear program will remain a civilian one; or the United States could step up its covert actions to degrade the program so much that Israelis would decide that military action wasn’t necessary.

U.S. officials don’t think that Netanyahu has made a final decision to attack, and they note that top Israeli intelligence officials remain skeptical of the project. But senior Americans doubt that the Israelis are bluffing. They’re worrying about the guns of spring — and the unintended consequences.

But Israeli leaders are reportedly accept, even welcome the prospect of going it alone and demonstrating their fortitude at a time when their security is compromised by the Arab Spring.

      In the foreseeable future Israel won’t bomb Iran, nor will Iran bomb Israel. This is just saber rattling and further cranking up the heat on Iran. Say what you want but the Iranians are totally stupid. If nothing else, the US, even without Israel, could shut down every refinery, and prevent a drop of oil from leaving Iran for sale with a one hour barrage of missiles. Their economy and government would collapse. They know it, we know it.

      Do you know why we’re scared of Iran? Think about it. It’s because their government is run by religious people who think they know what God wants. When a government thinks they know what God wants, to that same degree they’ve lost site of the practical consequences of their actions not only on their own country but the rest of the country.

      Why are we scared of Iran? Because their leaders think they speak to and must follow the words of God. I don’t want another George Bush who thinks God is telling him to invade Iraq either. That’s scary to me and to the rest of the world.

      You’re supposed to believe that the Whitehouse is “right on top of international economic sactions” but completely clueless as to how they’d respond to an Israeli attack.

      The economic sanctions are clearly meaningless, or we wouldn’t be talking about how much longer till Iran has enough to make a bomb. So which useless, wishy-washy policy will the Administration adopt to show Israel that “we’re serious this time”?

      How many people, Jewish or otherwise, were arrested on 9/11? Does it even matter? Somehow I doubt that we succeeded in arresting people complicit in the attack WHILE IT WAS HAPPENING. If the Israelis arrested had anything to do with 9/11 then I’d be asking whether law enforcement knew about the attacks beforehand. After all, you mean to tell me that we somehow knew who was responsible for the attack as it was going on? I could ask how many Germans were arrested on 9/11 and regardless of the answer it would mean nothing. We judge evidence Tech, not insinuations and conspiracy theories.

      onemansthoughts: War between Israel and Iran is their business not mine. I desire no part of it and it’s of absolutey no interest to me. So what if Iran makes 1 atomic bomb.. Israel has like 200 extremely powerful nukes… and they even have a plan to use them on America. “The Samson Option” Research it.

      You know little Wars have a history of getting out of control.. sort of like little fires. Hitler wanted a little War back when he invaded Poland.. He had no idea that WW2 was about to break out as a result of that move.

      JZS, not attacking your post, because much of it made sense. But, I do disagree with your assessment that neither Israel or Iran will bomb each other. First, I would take Iran’s sabre rattling seriously. They are capable of attempting anything. Israel on the other hand will make a promise and keep it. Iran should take them seriously. They’ve proven in the past that they will take measures to protect their people and nation. Remember 4 July 1977, and 7 June 1981.

      Wow you people are way too bomb happy. I am not saying something shouldn‘t be done about Iran don’t misunderstand me. But what you are asking for is basically the end to come. If Israel strikes Iran it is a good bet that Iran and others will try to strike Israel. If that happens I think you will see thinks unfold that are foretold in the Bible. Just because I know where I will end up at the end of things doesn’t mean I am ready for it to happen right now and that I am going to cheer on something that might usher that in. Plus I think I would rather have someone else at our helm when something like that goes down than the crazy captain that is controlling our ship now.

THESE ARE THE SAME PEOPLE WHO COMPLAIN WE ARE NO LONGER A CHRISTIAN NATION.       Does anyone know anything about the 6-day war? the Yom Kippur war? Israel has been attacked on all side by the towel-heads before and beat them without any help from the US. Today, egypt/syria/iraq are in shambles. Israel is by far the strongest and could wipe out the mid east if they wanted to. This iran thing is no sweat for the israelites.

    Please someone correct me, when has the sanctions against Iran been increasingly successful? I thought that they have been snubbing their nose to the US and Europe from the beggining of their obsession for a nuke.

    We all know it was not only the governments problems in which created the economic mess, but also all the greed, irresponsible people that led to it also! I remember when people said that “you need to buy a house now” when the prices were way to high to begin with! Anyone in their right mind could have saw that it was nothing but a bubble of greedy people! It’s so sickening that people are so far in debt that I can barely cover anything from what they make!

    As for Israel, sooner or later we all know that what must be done will always happen! There is no backing down when it comes to freedom and the threats there of that makes you live in fear!

    I’m sure Iran will provoke in every way like all the other Arabs do! I say have at it Israel with God’s speed! Vanquish the evil off the face of the earth!

    I think the most likely scenario is:
    - EMP(s) and/or dirty nuke(s) for us (the U.S) delivered ‘anonymously’ via cargo ship(s).
    - Conventional, direct, coordinated multi-Islamic-nation blitzkrieg against Israel. Iran won’t attempt nuke against Israel because Israel would immediately turn Iran into a glass parking lot, and Iran knows this.

    Israel has 7.8 million people…Iran has 10X that many. Israel is surrounded by enemies…Iran is surrounded by friends or people that will turn their heads the other way. Israel is approx 8000 square miles…Iran is 636,000 square miles.

    Israel needs to stand down (unless they fear an attack upon them is imminent) and pray for Obama to be tossed out in favor of a president that will stand by her side.

      I doubt Israel is going over to engage in H2H combat…or even to engage ground troops. It will more than likely be an air assault against installations/factories/etc.

      How many years did it take the US to find things in Iraq? And there we were up against insurgents…not an army. I’m referring. of course, to after the surrender.

      How many years have we been looking for people/things in Afghanistan?

      They found old chemical weapons and materials in Libya after the war was over.

      So, if I’m right about it being an airwar, they will have a tough time finding the secret locations of any missile factories. Not to mention that Iran will no doubt have human shields ready for the world to see at known facilities.

      How many Iranians are in the military? Israel’s army service is mandatory starting at 18 (with certain exceptions) and people remain in the reserves for quite a while after. Israel has never had the advantage with numbers, yet they always manage to win.

      The problem has never been whether Israel can hold her own against the Arab countries, she has demonstrated time and time again that she is more than capable of that. The problem is when the major powers start arming up their toadie regimes trying to make friends and assist them in attacking Israel. You don’t believe me, then ask yourself, which nation provided training and arms to most of the pro palestinian terror groups and where all the Arab countries got their weapons from.     I can’t believe Panetta and the CIA actually thinks this is a real breaking news announcement, especially for those people who keep up with what’s going on in the world, frankly I’m shocked it has not happened already. I expect it to be much sooner than Panetta predicted!

    Buckle up! Pray allot, don’t take any trips that are not absolutely necessary, keep plenty of food on hand, as much fuel as possible, fishing equipment for fishing, plenty of guns and ammo (for hunting game food). Tune out the talking heads! Maybe Jesus will return soon and clear up this Theological understanding decrepency up in what the Holy Bible says and the way of salvation, works or grace!       Gary, thanks for specifying what we may need the fishing gear and the firearms and ammo for. Here, I was planning on using those items to McGyver a long range bomber to hit Iran myself. You may at some point want to consider the fact that you may need to use the weopons for self defense, as well as food procurement.

      I agree. Paul understands that Isreal has the strongest, most technologically advanced military in the Mid East, and they have hundreds of nukes as well. If we would stop acting like a teacher separating two kids from fighting in the school yard and just let them go at it, the world would be better off. Isreal would pulvarize Iran, and not one American life would be wasted for taking care of THEIR business.       To the point of being outrageous in this video… not only did Paul dub the war on Hamas terrorists an “atrocious massacre” and speak of America “blindly” supporting Israel, but he commented, “To me, I look at it [meaning Gaza] like a concentration camp and people are making homemade bombs and, uh, like they’re the aggressors?”

      A concentration camp? Could Paul have possibly found a more offensive and less accurate description to use? And to think that he made this statement on the state-run TV network of Iran, a country whose leaders deny the Holocaust and call for the annihilation of Israel.

      And could Paul have painted a more false picture of the realities surrounding Israel’s attack on Hamas in Gaza? (Hamas is still recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States and that the Hamas charter still calls for the complete destruction of Israel?).

Peace through strength! if Iran was really afraid of being bombed into the stone age they would have stopped the nuke program a long time ago (as they did temporarily in 2003). Ron Paul and Obummer’s weakness only encourage Iran to seek these weapons. In this situation Israel acts alone to defend itself.     The Bible tells us that God, Himself, will come and deal with the enemies of Israel. So we do not see Israel being done away with as Iran predicts. So in the midst of all the propaganda that Obama lets slip out on purpose, they do not know that God has a very special interest in Israel. Yes, hard times are coming in the future and we don’t know exactly when, but many things point to those end days that are in Daniel, Ezekiel and Revelations. Only God knows the day and time.
