Officials: Illegal Immigrant Became Cop in AlaskaANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — For years, the man known as Rafael Espinoza was widely respected as an exemplary police officer who was popular among his peers in Alaska’s largest city.

All that ended this week when authorities discovered he was really Mexican national Rafael Mora-Lopez, who was in the U.S. illegally and stole another man’s identity, officials charged.

“His reputation here is one of a hard-working officer, one who was very professional,” Anchorage Police Chief Mark Mew said Friday at a news conference announcing Mora-Lopez’s arrest. “The problem, obviously, is he is not Rafael Espinoza.”

Soon after the announcement, Mora-Lopez appeared in U.S. District Court in Anchorage and pleaded not guilty to a charge of passport fraud, which carries a maximum 10-year sentence. At his arraignment, Mora-Lopez told a federal magistrate he is 47, even though officials listed his age as 51.

His attorney, Alan Dayan, declined to comment to The Associated Press.

Federal agents processing a renewal request for his passport discovered the alleged fraud. He was arrested Thursday after authorities searched his home and found documents confirming his true identity, officials said.

Mora-Lopez had been employed as an Anchorage police officer since 2005 under the assumed name. Police and federal prosecutors said he doesn’t have a criminal record.

“We have no evidence that this individual had at the time been anything other than a good police officer,” Karen Loeffler, U.S. Attorney in Alaska said.

The real Rafael Espinoza is a U.S. citizen who lives outside Alaska.

Officials said it’s too soon to gauge implications of the case, such as any fallout over Mora-Lopez’s court testimony in past criminal trials. Authorities released limited details, saying the case was still unfolding.

Mew said the department conducted a pre-employment criminal background check on Mora-Lopez and he also passed a polygraph test. A national fingerprint check also turned up empty.

The arrest was a “bitter pill to swallow” for many in the police department, Mew said.

There are no immediate plans to file state charges, said John Skidmore, a state attorney. He and other officials stressed that the case was still under investigation.

“At this time, we have no reason to believe, from what we know so far, that this gentleman or this officer’s good work for APD has in any way been compromised or questioned,” Skidmore said.

U.S. Magistrate John D. Roberts set bond at $50,000, and ordered Mora-Lopez to home-confinement and electronic monitoring. His defense attorney told the magistrate that Mora-Lopez has a wife and child in Alaska and has close ties to Anchorage, where he has lived since the late 1980s.

“He’s not going anywhere,” Dayan said.

The wife could not be reached by phone for comment Friday.

The passport fraud case is similar to one involving a Mexican national who took the identity of a dead cousin who was a U.S. citizen in order to become a Milwaukee police officer. Oscar Ayala-Cornejo was deported to Mexico in 2007.

    Tip of the iceberg. At least the guy was an exemplary person in all other respects. But still, the law is the law. Mexico, along with other Third World countries, is a disgrace. These people run here because their world is in shambles. True rich and poor, truly corrupt and lacking in freedoms and liberties that could free its people from the yoke of oppression………..In fact, this pretty much describes much of the world.

      Actually, the Mexican government SUPPORTS ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION because the alternative is for all of these desperately poor people to stay where they are, grow until the dissatisfaction with their government is so strong that the current elitist ruling group is overthrown by another revolution, and the government is replaced….The elitists are using the United States as the relief valve which will prevent another long needed revolution against the current Mexican government…thus the desire by some people to take every single illegal Mexican alien, give them an M-16 and two loaded magazines, and dump them back on the other side of the border with a bus ticket to Mexico City!

    heres the thing and i know it wont go over well for blaze readers. at least this person wanted to assimilate and be a respectful citizen. the problem is he came here under illegal terms.
    the human side says, if i was in a place where there was no opportunity, i would want to come to america by any means. we dont know the details yet on this guy. but maybe he tried the legal way first , got desperate and did what any hungry man would do and find a way to put food in your stomach. at least he chose honest work. it doestn execuse coming here illegaly, but at least he made a valiant effort to asimilate. unlike the masses flooding our system and streets disrepecting our flag and way of life.

      Yeah, he came to the U.S. instead of staying to try and reform the system there, stole the identity of a legal citizen (which no doubt caused this guy headaches) and performed duties as an ILLEGAL POLICE OFFICER….Might be a nice guy, but I DON’T CARE! This guy took a job that a LEGAL CITIZEN should have been doing, and IS NO DIFFERENT from the millions of other illegals who have invaded the country and are ransacking the state and federal treasury’s every day because THEIR OWN COUNTRY WANTS TO GET RID OF A PROBLEM THEY CAUSED!

    I own a heat and air company and my crew is the only english talking people on the job sites. I know plenty of roofers sheetrock men painters and framers who have no jobs since the boys from south of the border came here. Its sad they live 10 to a house and work for half of what Americans do. It makes me sick when people say they work so much cheaper. If we lived 10 to a house and went back to 1980 prices we could be cheaper to. I dont see white collar people wanting to work for half of what they make now. It dont affect the white collar worker so they dont care about us peasent construction men. Just think the money they make they send back to Mexico. We spend our money in America and on taxes the boys from south of the border dont. Since Obama has became pres its been rough on us guys in construction. Every night I worry if I will be able to make enough money to feed my family. The sad thing is im white and all the govt programs are geared up to help minority people

      It’s a fact. All craftsman, skill, or labor jobs have been taken over. It’s darn near impossible for an American business to stay afloat BECAUSE of illegal-ultra cheap labor..

      The program Modern Marvels showed that U.S. immigration or “anti-illegal immigration” laws are the cause of not enough laborers…which is why our produce businesses are failing.

      Does this sit well with any of you? I just don’t understand why our laws for sovereignty are the cause of our demise. Do you?

    We have so many problems that we, the people, must deal with, and you guys are focused on petty nonsense.

    1. We have lots and lots of people in this country, the wealthiest and most powerful country in the world, who do not have regular healthcare–affordable regular checkups, dental care, and psychological help. Canada and all of Western Europe do. Why don’t we?
    2. We have school districts where kids have microscopes in labs and cool field trips, and school districts where kids have none of that. Regardless of what you have to say about their parents, why should all kids not get an equal start?
    3. We spend as much on fighting foreign wars as on SS and Medicaid/Medicare combined, and you guys want to cut services to the sick and the poor instead of cutting the foreign wars budget?

As far as healthcare and the like, the free market and free people could do a much better job at delivering services to the needy than the government.     Whatever his reputation as a hard worker and such, the fact is he broke the law of illegal entry, of identitity theft and fraudulent application on the police forms. There will be penalties to be paid by him for doing such.

      It’s an excellent indication of how much our legal system is respected by these wetbacks….To them, our laws are a game to be played, and they game us very well with their two tier legal system…one set of laws for the wetbacks, one set of laws for the legal citizen….and the wetbacks have MORE rights than we do!
      Where else can an illegal alien drive up to the courthouse to stand before a judge for a “driving without a license” ticket, plead guilty, pay the fine, and then DRIVE HOME AGAIN???
      Where else can an illegal alien hit the car of a legal citizen, go to court and be told that part of her “punishment” she cannot apply for a drivers license for a year, and then weeks later is seen by the woman she hit, STILL DRIVING?
      Side note: The lady who saw this woman still driving, attempted to film the person violating the law, but was told by police that SHE could be arrested for STALKING by the ******* in question if she persisted in filming the ******* perp. The ******* in question was later arrested and was found to be running a DAYCARE CENTER, and was in posession of FIVE DIFFERENT FAKE I.D.s while her “husband” was also here illegally and posessed FOUR DIFFERENT FAKE I.D.s…..

      An illegal mexican with no driver’s license , driving someone else’s car, makes an illegal left turn outside a school and hits a little girl on her bicycle. Instead of stopping , she drangs the little girl before deciding to stop, and with a dead girl on the street and the dead girl’s hair and blood on the grill of the car that hit her, the police not only refuse to arrest the illegal but also refuse to file ANY charges against the illegal.
      The illegal has a crime record but the mayor and the local mexican counsulate not only come to protect the illegal from being charged for vehicular manslaughter , they get the local newspapers to scrub the stories from their records. Later she and her whole family , including brothers and sisters and a few cousins etc , ALL ILLEGALS and on welfare get to file for US citizenship .

      No it is not too shocking, when the show “Americas Most Wanted” first aired, the very first crook they were displaying was caught here in AZ. He was a member of the Sheriffs department for the county, and the department superior of his for the night shift was watching the show to see what it was going to be like…he looked at the screen shot, looked to the room where the deputies were taking roll…and there was the perp. He now is enjoying a very long vacation in the crossbar hotel.

      The simple, core fact here of this story is he has broken several laws, and the part of fraudulent application for law enforcment positions should carry heavy penalties for it; of course when, or if the US Attorney General gets involved, he most likely will sue Alaska for discrimination against the illegals civil rights violated.

      Imagine all the cases he was involved in now have to be dropped. What ever happened to the charge of impersonating a police officer? This is one guy that should get the book thrown at him. He needs to be in prison for a long, long time. He was able to gain the trust of citizens under the guise of an officer and whose to say he didn’t benefit from this on the side, like I know you were speeding but if you give me $50.00 we’ll forget all about it, etc.. This really shows how broke our system is and who knows how many others have done the same thing. I can’t tell you how much this really infuriates me.

      We have a legal resident in our condo complex that “sponsors” illegals. He’s very mamby-pamby, weak, measly, servile towards Whites. His demeanor completely transforms when he is with his minions. Arrogance, stare downs, rude/incitive comments in Spanish when with others, yet apologetically denying it when confronted one on one (sometimes one on three: in HIS favor)

      He is overly friendly to anybody Hispanic, very much looked to as a leader (the complex janitor leader), several pregnant women have stayed with them late in their terms then disappear, several blue collor/laborer men stay with him for months then disappear (they are ALL “my wife’s brother” – you’ve never seen such a large family of brothers that look nothing like the sister! lol!!!).

      We’ve had an influx of drug trafficking & gang looking people move in & they all are on friendly terms with this guy. Yet…I’m the, “Crazy racist white trash guy” with the only large American flag in a 175 unit complex. Each state could save SO MUCH MONEY for real educational improvements & community outreach if we’d just swiftly use the death penalty. Mafias & cartels still give orders from inside prison. They kill eachother for power. Let’s give them a helping hand, clean up our land, & save some serious money instead of keeping them sustained.

      *This is just one major reason extreme liberals need to be ousted from seats of power & influence*

      Point is: it’s an effective cover to seem kind, sincere, honest while openly doing dirty work. If everybody is your friend, who’s going to spill the beans? (had to do that one).

      We’re in agreement. Ilegals & their sanctuary cities, churches, & individual “enablers” are criminals & need to be converted to American values, laws, & traditions or leave.

      Sick of these racists (La Raza). BTW: I know FOR A FACT from their own mouths that Hispanics are breeding Whites out of existence by sheer volume & by co-opting our young people that haven’t had good/strong households.

      Hopefully God (through Glenn) will lead us on this issue as well. The obscenely rich (multi billionaires from within & without) are pulling our strings. We HAVE to resist in an organized way to survive.

      There is a bigger lesson to learn here — an illustration of why it’s so important to get all the lies out of your life. This man was living a life wrought with secrets, lies and fraud — the house built on sand. Look at all the people hurt by his deceit: his family, his colleagues, his community, the person whose identity he stole, the justice system (how many arrested by him or convicted by his testimony will have convictions thrown out or demand retrials?). The list goes on and on….The ends do not justify the means — ever — if the means involve wrongdoing. Sadly, he is reaping what he sowed and has hurt many others in the process.

      I’m torn on this one folks………

      He’s obviously broken the several laws in the US…..

      Should he be deported? Should he do time? Should he do a bunch of community service and then be deported? Should we let him run for POTUS?? LOL Just kidding….

      He’s been a productive tax-paying pillar of society… Has a wife and child here….. This not an easy one for me to comment on..

      However, I’m going throw this out… Community service… Apply for Green Card status….. and if even a minor offense from this point on, you get a bus ride back to where you came…

      I’m probably way off on this, but we have some real garbage here right now that needs our attention more than this guy……

      As good of a cop as he was he still violated the law by coming here illegally and stealing another person’s identity. This cannot be tolerated but I do understand him wanting to come here and better his life and it is collectively our fault for tolerating the lax immigration policies of both parties. I am sorry but he needs to be prosecuted and deported, do not pass go and no more American benefits.

      Why do we need to streamline the process? Do we have a shortage of workers? I think we have a lot of potential workers, more than there are jobs. Maybe if non-citizens were not taking jobs at near slave wage the wage for those jobs would go up. Making it easy to immagrate here cheapens your citizenship and mine. Again, I would understand if we had a worker shortage. What contries in the world makes it easy for us to become residents? Maybe canada, but they had a worker shortage.

      I think there is a part of that silly document called the Constitution that specifically deals with that. Try Article I section 8 Clause 4 which reads: “To establish a uniform rule of naturalization”.

      Do you suppose that qualifies as the way for “illegals” to become citizens? I know this is a novel new idea to some, but I assure you it is quite old and predates the Constitution of 1778. Might also take a look at USC Title 8 section 1101 (21-24) while you are at it. If you want to try to obfuscate an issue at least try to use coherent and logical arguments.
