NEW YORK (AP) — Mocked for years on “Saturday Night Live,” the governor of New York has appeared on the show to dish back.
Gov. David Paterson came on Saturday night during the show’s “Weekend Update” segment. He interrupted cast member Fred Armisen, who was in character as the governor. Armisen plays Paterson as a clueless blind man with a past of youthful drug use and womanizing.
Paterson joked that being governor is a lot like “Saturday Night Live.“ He says ”there are a lot of characters, it’s funny for 10 minutes and then you just want it to be over.”
Paterson has said the show‘s parodies hurt disabled people who can’t fight back. He said Saturday that he has a good sense of humor but jokes about the disabled are “sophomoric and stupid.”
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.
NEW YORK (AP) — A person close to the governor of New York says he will appear on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” after lambasting the show for mocking his blindness.
Gov. David Paterson’s appearance on the show is scheduled for Saturday night.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the governor would not comment publicly. NBC has also refused to comment.
The governor has criticized SNL. He once said the late-night program‘s parodies hurt disabled people who can’t fight back.
Cast member Fred Armisen has played Paterson as a clueless blind man with a past of youthful drug use and womanizing. In one skit, Armisen held up a chart illustrating the state’s job losses upside down.

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 5:55amIt was the high point in the episode. Patterson showed good humor (but he was always an easy target for SNL, and they were always soft with their fun-poking), but they never really came down hard on him. Still, funny segment. It made me realize how well Armisten did the character. Love that they kept the “in-between the camera and Anchors” gag.

Posted on September 27, 2010 at 6:56amAs a New Yorker, seeing the governor here made me wish we could elect him to the next term. He caught a lot of heat for making the exactly kind of tough decisions I don’t think we can expect from either of the guys seeking the office now.

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 4:40pmPaterson was funny in that bit yesterday.
Report Post »And he even did a perfect “ New Jersey ” punchline !!
I wonder if now SNL will shift to mocking Chris Christe, since they have to make sure Obama and Alvin Greene stay out of public scrutiny .

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 3:38pmSNL is so CHICKEN to NOT go after the easiest, FUNNIEST target there is, OBAMA. I mean sheesh they could improve their ratings instantly if they just started hammering him. Stupid show. I watched it when Chevy Chase first started on it as a little kid. Akroyd, Bellushi, Bill Murray. The real SNL. Pathetic.

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 1:43pmPaterson was funny. All those lines without a teleprompter. How would Obama compensate if something happened to his eyesight. Do they have uhh, er, but, but, you know, uh, er in Braille?

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 11:42amWell now, that is certainly a step up from the poorly written and executed O’Donnel skit. And Paterson was right, the two SNL skits posted on the Blaze have exceeded 10 minutes and I have lost interest.
