‘Oh, Oh, Unbelievable!’: Duke Stuns UNC With This Last-Second Buzzer-Beater

Austin Rivers is the son of Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers. And all the coach’s tutelage paid off last night when Austin hit a last-second buzzer-beater to lead the number 10-ranked Duke Blue Devils over the number five-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels.
It was another riveting chapter in this storied in-state rivalry, especially considering the Blue Devils trailed by double-digits for a large part of the game.
But Sports Grid points out that while it was a good night for Rivers, it was a bad night for Carolina big man Tyler Zeller. See, seconds earlier he tipped in a shot for Duke that kept the momentum going:
Carolina carried a double-digit lead into the second half, in what seemed like a game they were most likely on their way toward wrapping up. Then, in the final few minutes, Duke stormed back, cutting the game to three points. This is where the drama began, and where Carolina big man Tyler Zeller probably began to wish he had just stayed home and not suited up tonight.
With Duke down by three points and less than 15 seconds to go, Zeller tipped a 3-pointer into his own basket. The officials discussed the call and eventually gave Duke two points, not three. Down by one, they then fouled Zeller to stop the clock, putting him on the free-throw line. He made the first one, but missed the second, which then lead to this Austin Rivers moment…
See it for yourself below. And don‘t let Dick Vitale’s call of the shot pass you by either. It’s classic Dickey V.:
One of my good friends might have summed up the feeling of Tar Heels fans best: “No! I don’t accept that!”
Either way, it happened.

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 8:17amLandman1 you are correct. UNC snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. That game was about to be a blow out and get real ugly for dook, but as you stated Roy slowed it down. I hate that about how he and Dean coaches. My dad realyed a time in 1977 when UNC blew the NC game against Marquette by using the four corners slowing the game down stuff. Oh and all you NC State fans, maybe one day you will have a team worth cherring for, instead of living through other teams.

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 2:04pmIf you don’t care, then why did you watch the video? It drives me crazy to hear so many people have to make a negative, pessimistic, or bashing comment about every little thing they come across. It’s sad and annoying! There are reasons to be happy in life. Look for some of those!

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 10:07amI grew up in both Chapel Hill and Durham and have seen at least 100 of these games and that was as good as any. What I particularly appreciate is the passion filled NON-violence. The heels lost this one but know that this is a good learning experiance that may just carry them to the NCAA title and the Blue Devils learned that they can win any game if the effort is there. Two great teaching moments which, after all, is what college is about. Congrats to both schools for showing class when down, class when on the short end, and teaching truth as opposed to fantasy that leads to anger.

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 10:28amAS an unabashed Tarheel fan I’ll let you in on what can be learned from this. Roy Williams plays to lose. He was a product of Dean Smith who used to use the stall tactic to win games before the shot clock. Roy still employs the “stop attacking” method trying to run out the clock and they let off the gas. I don’t like Coach K but his team plays as hard as they can till the clock sounds. Good things happen when you go hard. The game was won but Carolina quit attacking. If this guy is a Hall of Fame coach my next check will come from NASA ’cause I‘m a freakin’ astronaut. His players will now second guess him as is always the case with Roy. But he made sure he saved them timeouts. He must think it‘s a badge of honor to have TO’s left after the game. Not doing him any good this AM. Attack, attack, attack. Duke did and see what happened.

My condolences.
And BlazeFolk, why is this ‘news’? It‘s just college b’bal. The worst of the lot IMHO of collegiate sport. And the real truth is that unless you made an illegal bet on this lat night with your local bookie, his game means nothing of merit.
(yes, it’s true, I‘m the only guy in this state that doesn’t care about college sports, and yes it does make me an outcast)

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 8:59amAnd the fans from both teams acted with class unlike other large market teams that would have rioted regardless of which team they were for. There is something to be said for living and being raised outside the large cities that teach so much anonimous, I am alone in this crowd lessons.
